Latest from The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner on the path forward for Oregon State & Washington State: “My understanding is that the Cougars and Beavers are, in fact, in discussions with the Big 12 and ACC, but those discussions are limited to football scheduling for 2025 and beyond. Joining the Big 12 isn’t an option for WSU and OSU. The Big 12 doesn’t want them, which is unfortunate but makes sense. What has changed in the past year that would prompt the conference to reverse course on its membership strategy? To spur ESPN and Fox to spend money they aren’t currently spending? (Answer: Nothing has changed.) That said, if the ACC implodes, the calculation changes — for both the ACC and, perhaps, the Big 12. As long as the current conference structure exists, there is no path for the Cougars and Beavers into the Big 12 in the next few years.” (link)

Meanwhile, new on Connect: ACC Deputy Commissioner/Chief of External Strategy Amy Yakola joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Bryan Fischer. The two discuss building communications strategies around adding conference members, supporting teams in postseason runs, navigating the response to ongoing lawsuits and lots more. Yakola on adding Cal, Stanford and SMU: “There’s a lot of similarities there. I mean there's obviously the ones that everybody points out where you've got different time zones, but when you look at what those institutions stand for and what the ACC has long stood for, there's a lot of things that make a lot of sense in there. And I really think our schools and the conference office and certainly the leadership of the commissioner has done a really nice job of getting as prepared as possible, whether it's scheduling, whether it’s announcing future championships and just sort of the integration of them so that we are as successful as we can be beginning this summer.” Full Q&A. Houston Christian AD Steve Moniaci says HCU is slowly but surely upgrading facilities “to where they look like Division I facilities” and notes the Huskies are talking with CVS to end the lease on the store that sits on HCU’s property on one side of the football stadium. “We’re just waiting on that lease from the CVS to get out of the way and then we’ll get the other side of this stadium built.” (link)

College of Charleston inks an extension with Collegiate Sports Connect to continue leveraging Connect’s TalentFinder platform for administrative talent identification, recruiting & hiring solutions. Cougars Deputy AD Kyle Denzel: “We are excited to continue our partnership with Collegiate Sports Connect to enhance our ability to attract and recruit talented professionals in collegiate sports. The staff at Connect has been extremely responsive and helpful in our mission to get staffed up with the best professionals as quickly as possible.” (link)

Canada Soccer CEO/General Secretary/former UC Davis AD Kevin Blue responds to Florida professor Molly Harry’s revisit of his 2019 AthleticDirectorU article, “Rethinking the Rising Expenses in College Athletics and the Non-Profit Paradox.” Blue: “I do think the theory holds up very well. Expenses still rise at the rate of revenues (or faster!). There is still no for-profit incentive to control costs to make money (may change if PE actually gets involved). And paying athletes via revenue sharing or NIL is just a modern (and fairer) expression of ‘spend to win.’ It’s just that the rules allow payments now and they didn’t before. Paying players will not cause overall spending to soften. Spending will continue to rise in direct proportion to revenue - and in response to the spending of the highest revenue earners - until there are financial rules in place. Spending is more fairly distributed to athletes now, but the theoretical basis for why costs go up is the same.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown breaks down how several universities are reaching out to Latino fans and points to UTRGV as having “perhaps the most creative broadcast solution I’m aware of.” Brown notes that some students and employees even commute from Mexico every day, so “engaging with a Latino population isn’t just a box to check or some aspirational goal. It has to be part of the institution’s holistic mission, something they do every day.” To do so, Roadrunners Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Jonah Goldberg explains UTRGV began working with Televisa to produce three Saturday baseball games for broadcast in Mexico. The partnership has expanded to also include a men’s basketball game, a women’s basketball game, and multiple baseball games. Roadrunners Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Strategic Initiatives Sara Hernandez: “We know that Televisa is a popular channel in Mexico, so we know there’s the potential to be reaching that market. But this has to go beyond just analytics. This is also about showing that we’re making that effort to reach our fans…some things are bigger than just how many people are watching.” Meanwhile, Cal State Bakersfield last year brought in the U-20 squad of Club América, one of the most famous clubs in Mexico. Over 2,100 fans showed up, an atmosphere that Roadrunners AD Kyle Conder described to Brown as a “party”, one with better attendance than the typical fall season. In previous years, CSUB also hosted the U-20 for Club Tijuana Xolos. Lots more from Brown. (link)

AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl believes college football is headed to a better place and tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “Anytime we can have opportunities for people to be involved in our profession, that’s a good thing. There was some concern from some of the coaches that I’ve worked with in the Group of Five, but I think the waters will distill. College football is going to be in a much better place, and there are more opportunities for guys that have a chance to coach.” Bohl adds that “College Football Playoff expansion is a great thing. And I think any negative is going to be minute compared to the benefits.” (link)

Bowl games are increasingly leaning into the “silliness” to engage with fans, and ESPN’s David Hale observes such silliness may be necessary as the games continue to be plagued by opt-outs. For instance, the “Duke's Mayo Bowl celebrates the shirtless guys caught on camera eating directly from the jar with a spoon during the game or setting up the broadcasters with a nice jar of mayo to enjoy between calls. The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl…managed to steal a little buzz from its cousin by advertising that its mascot was not edible.” The aforementioned cousin, the Pop-Tarts Bowl (also operated by Florida Citrus Sports), received 15x more media mentions than any other bowl and eight times the social media traffic of any other December bowl game, and Hale posits: “All of the silliness is possible for two reasons. The first is that those bowls have a title sponsor eager to lean into the fun. The second is the one thing most fans seem to see as a problem: The stakes are low. … When bowls first entered the college football lexicon, there was no expectation they'd be a metric in the larger evaluation of a team's season. Heck, national titles were handed out before bowl games were played.” Florida Citrus Sports CMO Matt Repchak: “These are exhibition games. They're meant to be fun, a good watch on television and a great vacation for the people who come and the teams who are participating.” Looking ahead, several bowl directors tell Hale they'd be open to nixing conference tie-ins once contracts expire in favor of allowing bowls to select the best overall matchups after the playoff field is set – ideally allowing bowls to secure games between teams with the fewest opt-outs and the most enthusiasm about the game and the venue. More from Hale. (link)

In addition to budget cuts announced by New Orleans last week, Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody reports Western Illinois, Rider, Valparaiso and Queens Charlotte also announced cutbacks related to declining enrollment, FAFSA delays and other issues. At Western Illinois, 36 faculty members did not have their contracts renewed. According to local media reports, the university needs to trim its budget by $22M and has managed to hit $13.4M of that target already, but more personnel cuts are expected. Rider cut 31 positions last week. Of those 31 jobs, none were faculty roles, and 17 were vacant. Of the 14 active employees who lost their positions, three were offered other positions at the university, according to a spokesperson who noted that the reduction in force will save Rider a little more than $2M. Valpo announced plans to cut 30 academic programs and an unspecified number of faculty posts, and Queens Charlotte is making unspecified job and budget cuts after missing undergraduate enrollment targets by around 100 students. The university blamed the “turbulent” launch of the new FAFSA for causing “many students to delay their decision about where to attend college, or to pursue other paths altogether.” (link)

Private equity firms continue to explore NASCAR for potential investments, and Race Team Alliance Chairman/Fortress Investment Group Co-Founder Rob Kauffman tells SBJ’s Adam Stern: “There are two things that are happening at the same time: There’s been a big growth in the financialization of sports and the maturing of it as a business. So now, more people are looking around at, ‘What stones haven’t already been turned over?’ And motor racing has had a relatively modest amount of that activity historically.” Stern notes that “teams operate as independent contractors and don’t own equity in NASCAR itself. There are 36 charters, which guarantee starting spots and revenue streams from every race, and team owners who have the charters can sell them when they get out of the sport. Those guaranteed elements, combined with NASCAR’s new seven-year, $7.7B media rights deals, helped juice the market for outside investment.” Former Richard Petty Motorsports Majority Owner Andrew Murstein: “Other pro sports team owners are now looking at NASCAR, as team values are still very low especially compared to other sports. Savvy investors like Marc Lasry have sold their interests in the NBA and have invested in NASCAR as they feel it has a lot more upside.” Meanwhile, Stern explains that “NASCAR is negotiating a new charter agreement with teams and — showing how active the private equity sector is — drafts include rules for such investments. The guidelines could include a ban on sovereign wealth funds in NASCAR.” More. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz summarizes challenges to the House settlement that were filed by yesterday’s deadline: “Two separate sets of attorneys made filings asking U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken to deny preliminary approval of the proposed settlement. Taken together, the arguments combined to raise myriad issues about the deal, including whether it undervalues the claims, discriminates against female athletes, creates another illegal cap on compensation and the money that would go to the plaintiffs' attorneys. [...] Lawyers involved with the case in Colorado (Fontenot case) say that while the proposed settlement values the claims they are pursuing at a little over $1.8 billion, they ‘obtained an independent, preliminary estimate from a respected economist’ that places the value of these claims at $24.3 billion. A submission from that economist was included among their filings. [...] The attorneys for the (six Women’s) rowers allege that the settlement’s ‘extreme preferential treatment of male football and basketball players suggests that Class Counsel pursued those groups’ interests to the near exclusion of interests of other’ athletes.” Tons more details. New North Carolina President Lee Roberts to WRAL’s Brian Murphy: “By this time next year, we need to know how we're funding the additional NIL money, the 22%. That's going to require some revenue enhancements ... We'll probably have to cut some areas of our athletics budget.” Roberts also tells Murphy cutting sport programs will be a last resort. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown believes FIU’s naming rights agreement with Pitbull is a win-win, “but honestly, I don’t think the cash is necessarily the biggest part of the story here. It’s everything else that’s attached to the partnership that makes the Pitbull deal more than just a standard stadium naming rights project. This has the potential to be a massive win not just for FIU, but for Pitbull…and potentially other artists.” Brown notes that “if FIU football (and attendance) improves over the course of the deal, [making 305 Vodka the “preferred” brand inside the stadium] has the potential to add tens of thousands (if not more) of value to both parties. The arrangement also comes with numerous promotional obligations, including Pitbull’s contributions to the Blueprint Collective to aid FIU’s NIL efforts. “So there’s potential for additional financial benefits for both sides here, and marketing rewards beyond just the stadium name. Honestly, I think that’s especially critical for smaller college departments, or even athletes, as they pursue NIL deals. It’s going to be better to find an entity willing to be a partner on multiple levels than it is to work with an entity seeking a more transactional relationship. … Worst case scenario, FIU collects a check, hosts some mailed-in concerts, and we all get to make jokes online. Best case, FIU collects a bigger check and builds important momentum not just for the athletic department, but for the school. And maybe Pitbull drops an absolute banger of an FIU anthem that gets stuck in our head for a year.” (link)

Kentucky has asked a federal court to dismiss much of the lawsuit filed against it by two former assistant swimming coaches. The original complaint accuses the school, President Eli Capilouto, AD Mitch Barnhart, former Swimming HC Lars Jorgensen and former Swimming AC Gary Connelly of failing to address allegations of sexual abuse by Jorgensen, or failing to act on red flags in his hiring process. WDRB’s Eric Crawford reports: “Arguing that it has sovereign immunity as a state institution, UK attorneys entered a motion to dismiss four counts of the complaint. UK further argues that it should face no legal ramifications for ‘vicarious liability’ for the actions of Jorgensen, because it argues that his conduct did not fall within the scope of his employment. The school has asked for a summary dismissal of those counts, which would limit the scope of charges against it. Beyond that defense, UK argues that it acted within state and federal laws, and that once complaints were brought, it acted in good faith, without wrongful intent, and within its authority. It argues that monetary damages for emotional distress are barred by immunity, and that some claims are barred by statute of limitations.” (link)

Florida State-to-Florida A&M-to-Miami (FL)-to-Arkansas transfer football student-athlete Rodney Hill told the Razorbacks media contingent yesterday that he was forced to leave the ‘Noles after coaches there learned an agent had been contacting other teams to gauge interest in Hill before he’d entered the transfer portal. Hill said his parents hired the agent, who then texted coaches from other programs purporting to be Hill. Hill: “When it got back to the head coach, I had to leave Florida State. … From my perspective, I know it's your parents and stuff like that, but sometimes you've got to handle it on your own. Sometimes, like with my parents, I know they were trying to do the best thing for me, but sometimes you've got to take that on your own and got to do it yourself. But to other kids, I'd just say you don't have to get an agent right now. Just wait.” (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders took the chance to fight back against the critical media members present during Friday’s presser. Addressing the Denver Post’s Sean Keeler before Keeler finished asking his question, Sanders: “You don’t like us, man. Why do you do this to yourself? No, I’m serious. Why do you do this? Like you know you don’t. Like why do you do this? It would be hard for me to really engage in someone I don’t like or someone I don’t like. I’m just asking why? Like why? What did I do?” Keeler’s response: “You’ve gotta pay bills, man. You didn’t do anything. It’s not about that. This is a football question.” Sanders fired back: “But why? I’m asking you why? You want me to answer you, so why? You’re always under attack. Like what did we do to you?” Keeler has developed a reputation for being critical of Sanders and his Buffs program, notably referring to the coach as a “false prophet” in February. (link)

Netflix has signed a deal for CBS to broadcast the streamer’s two NFL games this Christmas. The one-year deal involves the production of the games only and does not include the on-air talent that will call the two games; however, the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint notes it is possible that the CBS booth team of Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will be tapped to call one of the games. CBS will receive a production fee for the two games, as well as promotional spots in Netflix’s streaming of the games for its own programming. (link)
