Florida A&M AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is no longer with the Rattlers. Sykes today sent the following email to staffers: “The purpose of this communication is to let you know that effective immediately, I am no longer employed at FAMU. Please route any questions or concerns to AVP for Athletics, Michael Smith until you receive additional direction from Interim President Timothy Beard. Best of luck to each of you!” (link); HBCU Gameday’s Vaughn Wilson reports that FAMU Interim President Timothy Beard has asked for the immediate resignations of members of the FAMU senior leadership team by the end of today. Those impacted include the COO, provost, general counsel, chief of staff, communications and director and Sykes, among others. From a form letter sent by Beard: “Please know that this request may not be a reflection of your individual contributions or dedication to our institution. Your hard work and commitment to the University over the years have been invaluable, and we deeply appreciate the many ways you have served our community. However, at this time, we believe that new leadership is essential for the University to achieve its long-term goals. … Please see attached the template to utilize relative to submitting your resignation letter no later than the close of business on 8/13/2024. This decision was not made lightly and is rooted in a commitment to ensuring that our University is positioned for future success and growth.” (link)

Canadian junior hockey player Rylan Masterson has filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the NCAA and 10 universities alleging the NCAA is violating antitrust laws by preventing players who have competed in a major-junior hockey game from playing in the NCAA. The 10 universities named in the suit are Canisius, Niagara, RIT, Boston College, Boston University, Denver, Quinnipiac, Notre Dame Du Lac, Stonehill and St. Thomas. The suit argues that professional athletes who have been financially compensated, such as swimmer Katie Ledecky, still retained NCAA eligibility and that notes Boston College's Tom Willander played professionally in Sweden and was still allowed to dress in the NCAA. “This scheme [referred to herein as the 'boycott'] prevents competition between the CHL and NCAA for top-end players and thus artificially suppresses compensation for players and artificially creates less competitive leagues. Not only that, the boycott also puts 16-year-olds in the impossible position of deciding, at that young age, whether they will ever want to play Div. I hockey. It is per se illegal under the antitrust laws, including because it constitutes a group boycott." (link)

Tennessee agrees to a 20-year partnership with Pilot that preserves the name of Neyland Stadium. Under the terms of the agreement, which could extend beyond 20 years, the names of Neyland Stadium and Shields-Watkins Field will remain unchanged, and Pilot is designated as the presenting partner of the Neyland Stadium renovation project and the official travel stop of Tennessee Athletics. Vols AD Danny White: "As we navigate the changing landscape of college athletics, we are dedicated to building the best athletics department in the country. Because we were committed to preserving the name of Neyland Stadium, finding a partner who shared this vision was essential. With deep roots here in Knoxville, Pilot recognizes the significance of Neyland and the importance of tradition to our fans and the university. Our focus continues to preserve and honor our storied past while modernizing to ensure we lead the way in college sports." New signage on the east side of Neyland Stadium will feature a return of the iconic "Home of the Vols" along with Pilot's logo. Pilot's branding will also be on each side of Shields-Watkins field and in sponsored content with Tennessee Athletics and The Vol Network. (link)

Duke is bringing in six different acts to Wallace Wade Stadium this football season, including British DJ Jonas Blue and content creator Rachel DeMita, to “bring a tailgating atmosphere inside the 95-year-old venue,” according to Sportico’s Jacob Feldman. Blue Devils Executive Director of Football Marketing Chris Alston: “It’s a new venture for us, collaborating with an outside personality. We got challenged by our athletic director, Nina King, to really think outside the box.” Alston adds that he’s already heard from marketing and gameday production peers across college and pro sports who are curious about the initiative. “We’re on the front end of this.” With an undergraduate enrollment below 7K and an alumni base spread across the country, the Blue Devils are “investing in new branding and messaging that speaks to nearby residents,” Feldman points out, and WME Sports Partner/Endeavor EVP for Global Sports Partnerships Mike Zavodsky, who has been leading WME’s support of Duke’s branding evolution, says: What you’ve seen in the pro sports landscape probably over the last 10 years is…using third-party IP or really leveraging the influence that social media has to elevate brands. As college athletics transitions into the current state that it’s in and thinks about monetization and brand in a different way, there’s a natural transition from the way the pro sports leagues have really emphasized that for the last 10 years and doing it in the collegiate space.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown shares more from his trip to Evanston to tour Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, including why the Wildcats opted to go this route rather than play all their games at other Chicagoland venues. “Northwestern’s ability to actually renovate Ryan Field was politically contentious, and it was far from a sure thing that the Evanston City Council would approve it. Once that approval was granted, (by a single vote) the school had to work quickly, lest opponents of the stadium re-mobilize to defeat it. So the planning timetable couldn’t be as smooth as it might be for other schools.” Brown also reports Northwestern is set to actually increase its game day revenue despite the temporary venue’s capacity being roughly a third of Ryan Field’s. “Unlike at the old stadium, Martin Field will be allowed to sell alcohol (in cans, not on draft). Martin Field will also have new ribbon board and signage opportunities that weren’t at Ryan Field, allowing the program to earn more from multimedia rights sales and other sponsorship programs. And, while the previous stadium was much larger, Martin Field will have hundreds more ‘premium’ seats.” How close is the stadium to Lake Michigan? “I didn’t get out a tape measure or anything, but a few staffers estimated that the stadium is ‘less than 50 feet’ away from the actual lake. There’s a walking path behind the stadium, and that’s about it. You are very close to the lake.” More from Brown, including more photos and the rundown on the bathroom situation. (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart is doubtful teams will rush to fill all 105 scholarships available post-House: “I don’t know that 105 scholarship players is the right way to go about it because you’ve got 105 NIL capabilities there. You’ve got more people who would be unhappy if you don’t have walk-ons if you do that. I don’t think it’s set in stone yet that everybody’s going to rush off and go to 105. That’s a huge burden on the budgets of the athletic department. And honestly, there’s a lot of kids here who do a great job for us as walk-ons. You would be dismissing them if you said you were going to go and sign 20 more high school kids.” Clemson HC Dabo Swinney last month made a similar point, remarking during the ACC Kickoff event: “The crazy thing is there’s not many coaches that want 105 scholarships. We want to keep our walk-ons. It’s hard to manage that many guys. When you have that many guys on scholarship, you think you got transfers now, you wait till that number gets there, it’s gonna be…a lot. So it’s going to change a lot of things.” (link)

Illinois Executive Senior Assoc. AD/COO Roger Denny during a public forum in support of his candidacy for the Missouri State AD post indicated that he would like to put $100M into the Bears’ football program and double the athletics department's budget. Denny on renovating Plaster Stadium: "That project is going to have to become some broad-scale community partnership to do it right. If you told me that, yeah, we need to do a $5M project to update some branding, fix some bathrooms and repaint some things, yeah, we'll figure that out but that's not going to move the needle. I've talked to President Williams and I know he's said this...it's going to be a $100M-plus project." Denny also noted that MSU needs a budget of $50-60M “to have the success that we want.” He cited Nevada, Colorado State and ECU as schools with $50-60M programs in similar metro areas to Springfield as examples and said those schools have mapped out ways to use resources wisely in order to make a larger impact. "I think if this community is really engaged, that's highly possible. If we're going to do that, we're going to do it at a time where it's cost-neutral to the campus. We're not asking for any additional input from the campus." To accomplish these goals, Denny explained that “we're going to have to leverage this community and the affinity in this community in a big way just to get the operating budgets in this department to a place where our teams can compete in Conference USA and win at the level in the same way we've historically won. … One of the answers I think has to be evaluated is through a big, public-private partnership that involves several governmental units, private enterprise and public enterprise and see if we can pull a community and their assets together in a way that benefits a heck of a lot more than athletics.” More from Denny. Santa Clara has had to “pivot” in its AD search after the Broncos’ top choice decided not to pursue the opening, according to CollegeAD. While it remains unclear what exactly the pivot entails, CollegeAD reports that “it is believed that SCU is inclined to reexamine its search.” Also unclear is whether any of the other finalists will be included in the reexamination, and there is no timeline for when things might get moving again. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork talks to Lettermen Row’s Tim May about how his previous experiences have prepared him to lead the Buckeyes during this pivotal time in college athletics and says: “I played Division II football. We had nothing right? And then I saw the evolution in the late ‘90s, around the arms race in college athletics, where you couldn’t focus on those fundamentals. And then I was an athletic director at 37 years old at Western Kentucky. And so I was the youngest FBS AD at the time. And then I got to Ole Miss, and I was the youngest Power 5 AD when we had five conferences. Now we only have four. And so I think I have a good perspective. … And I think my experience at (Texas) A&M, we were innovative, whether people like that or not, whether things were accurate or not, it doesn’t matter. We were innovative.” Bjork goes on to say: “I think that’s what Ted Carter was looking for in a new athletic director. ‘Okay, how do we honor tradition, but not think traditionally?’ And I think I bring some perspective like that.” Bjork also weighed in on the Big Ten’s expansion: “I think from a market base, from a TV value, from an economic ecosystem, it’s not unwieldy. It was the right decision to get into markets that have a lift for the rest of us, right? And a lot of times in these decisions now, that’s what’s leading it is how do we drive more value for our media rights? And again, now we can talk about that, because there is commercial activity.” Bjork believes there is still work to do on the governance front: “What does Division I mean? What does FBS mean? So all of these things have to come into play, and we base that on conference affiliation. Maybe we’re still in the same conference, but our affiliation, our economics, those are the things that all get sort of consolidated down the road and so I think that part will be fascinating as we get into the next 10 to 15 years.” More from Bjork. Asked whether SIU Edwardsville will add football anytime soon, Cougars AD Andrew Gavin says: “I’ve been at a non-football school for a while now. I get asked that all the time. Any future of football at SIUE? I can’t speak on forever. That’s not currently a discussion point for us. … There’s a lot to that. There were decisions the university made years ago. Considerations were different at that time. There’s a whole other decision-making process when you think about adding any sport, let alone the one that starts with F.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Vice President/former multi-stop DI AD Dr. Brad Bates and CSA Senior Consultant Clay Pfeifler join Connect/CSA's Steph Garcia Cichosz to share insight into the world of athletic consulting. Bates and Pfeifler break down the nuances of a strategic planning process - from the stakeholders involved, the metrics for success, and the common elements of effective strategic plans they've been involved with. The duo also reflect on current issues top of mind for athletic directors and the evolution of strategic thinking for athletic leaders. Bates: "The most important aspect of a strategic plan is integrating it into your management of the department. The ones that we see have the most success are not just marketing vehicles that are used as a promotional message; they are built into performance expectations, annual performance reviews. They are clearly the focal point of the athletic department with this shared vision that they're all striving to accomplish." (link)

Will Ventures’ Aaron Miller and Ben Gardner examine the potential for private equity’s foray into college sports and posit the “college sports fan experience has plenty of room for improvement.” They argue that “too many games are boring blowouts, tickets for games in Cameron Indoor, Tiger Stadium and other college venues are obscenely hard to buy,” and the “in-stadium hospitality options are worse than the pro leagues.” Furthermore, EA Sports’ college football franchise “took ELEVEN YEARS to release a new version because of player rights issues.” How could PE fix these issues? Miller and Gardner suggest each major college program could spin out their revenue-generating sports into separate entities owned by their respective schools. Those entities would also be open to outside investment. “Meanwhile, colleges keep their loss-leading sports as part of the university to be funded by school budgets and donors. Each entity can take on investors and adopt for-profit operating tendencies, building out their commercial teams, preparing annual budgets, and investing in growth initiatives. Schools recognize student-athlete unions, which leverage partners like Athletes.org to negotiate for athlete revenue share and benefits. A new governing body outside the NCAA institutes rules around salary cap, enforces athlete contracts, and provides transparency to both member programs and fans. … Colleges could financially stabilize their sports programs and tap into new growth opportunities with access to private capital. Private equity firms could drive returns for their LPs on the back of this growth. And most importantly, fans would experience a new era of their favorite college sports, marked by long-term stability, more consistent matchup quality, and enhanced fan engagement.” (link)

The NFL this week is meeting with a handful of private equity groups, including Arctos Partners and a consortium that includes Carlyle, Blackstone, CVC and Dynasty Equity, report Sportico’s Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams and Kurt Badenhausen, who note that Ares, Apollo and Sixth Street participated in earlier conversations with the league. Soshnick, et al. also report that “the meetings are intended for the league to conduct more due diligence, but also to talk through potential policy preferences. One of the topics for discussion…is the possibility of a call option that would allow the NFL to buy back stakes purchased by institutional funds should owners decide to reverse the policy. The league is also considering different options for size of investment—likely in the 5-10% range—and whether to demand that groups raise new NFL-specific funds. … While specifics are yet to be decided, many around the league consider it a foregone conclusion that owners will vote to allow some sort of institutional option. A handful of teams already have term sheets ready to execute should the rules allow, sources said, with others in the market right now discussing potential stakes with both individual and institutional backers.” (link)
