With the House settlement looming, Nebraska AD Troy Dannen plans to hold a summit with coaches to discuss the finer points of revenue sharing, noting that “there’s never been a delineation between, ‘What is an outside hitter worth?’ vs. a setter vs. a libero. … Coaches have work to do in this, too, deciding where they need to invest their money, and how. There’s a lot of thought that goes into it. Everybody becomes a general manager.” With the issue of Title IX’s application still up in the air, Dannen adds: “No matter what answer people have, a court's going to probably have a chance to intercede. There are myriad questions, and there may be nobody to answer it, especially in an election year. The best we can hope for is we all operate consistently.” (link)

Despite recent success in scheduling men’s basketball opponents from the Big Ten and Big East, Dayton AD Neil Sullivan isn’t ready to say this part of his job has gotten easier. “I think it’s hard to say because each game and each opportunity has just been so unique on its own merits. It’d be tough for me to draw a trend line. I think the reality is that as conferences consolidate — and we’re now down to the Power 4, so to speak — they’re continuing to add games and play 20-game schedules. When you start looking at 18-team conferences, I regret to say it, but I think it’s going to continue to be as challenging as it’s been.” Sullivan also notes the landscape is “changing very significantly, and it’s something that we pay attention to every day. Obviously, we’re in the rotation of the best national preseason tournaments. That has been really critical for our fan base, for our television exposure and for our resume. But they are changing. I think you’re going to see some of these tournaments move to four teams. You’re going to see NIL. You’re going to see a changing business model. It’s something that we have our eye on. I think that our basketball performance and our fan base gives us the opportunity to stay in the mix for a number of these, but I do think that over the next few years we’re going to see them look different.” (link)

In the first of a multipart interview with KSEE’s Scott Bemis, Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy talks about fundraising for new athletics facilities and says: “I took a facility tour last week and there's a lot of things we need to do just to help the teams win as well as give the student-athletes the support they need to graduate and prepare them for life after Fresno State. So, I haven't made a determination on what those steps are going to be, but within the next six months you're going to see a strategic plan and vision from me that outlines really the fundraising goals. As you know, NIL is a big piece of that now too, and so I told a group in Visalia I understand there's some infrastructure [upgrades] we need at the football stadium, but would you rather have bad bathrooms and a great football team or great bathrooms and an okay football team?” Klassy also emphasizes the importance of creating new revenue streams: “You’re going to see us operate more like a professional sports franchise and try to monetize as many opportunities as we can because right now the NCAA is allowing corporate logos on the football field. I think jersey patches are coming next, so you're going to see us really actively involved in trying to get companies involved – and not just corporate sponsorships, but also name, image and likeness.” (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher that “I think there is a major realignment coming, and it’ll be a big one. I think it will create even more of a divide and exclusivity for the teams that are on the right side of that line. 20 months to four years? How about that for a time frame? In my opinion, it’s going to look very much like an NFL minor league. I see an expansion of the playoff with that to 16 teams. The short version is Super Conferences. I think it’s going to boil down to maybe 40-60 teams in the Super Conference. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t play anybody but other Super Conference teams. Make that a division as far as who you play. Like I said, a full-blown playoff. Whether or not the players will be employees, officially, remains to be seen, but I think that’s very likely. I think that’s where it’s heading.” How does a football program build its brand? “Winning. When you win your brand follows suit, builds, and you become more nationally known. And that’s really the long and short of it. When you get on those national stages and have the opportunity to play in Rose Bowls and playoffs and that type of thing, although we haven’t got the opportunity to play in the playoffs yet. That’s still on our list of things that we need to accomplish as a program. But that is the bottom line. You’ve got to have the opportunity to be on those national stages, and you’ve got to perform well. When you’re there, you’ve got to be competitive.” Full Q&A. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the legal objections to the House settlement submitted by former Yale rowing student-athlete Grace E. Menke and five others who are, or were, members of the Yale, Oregon State, George Washington and Texas crew teams. McCann explains that their “core argument is the settlement would continue to deprive college athletes, particularly women athletes, of their rightful compensation and illogically substitute one illegal cartel for another. … The objectors contend while thousands of football and men’s basketball players would receive more than $100K, nearly all women athletes, save for ‘select basketball players,’ would be paid a comparatively meager $125. This arrangement, the objectors assert, ‘reinforc[es] wrongful gender inequities instead of remedying them’ and would constitute ‘a major setback for efforts to achieve gender equity in college athletics.’” Further, the former student-athletes contend the settlement would replace one price-fixing scheme with another that imposes a compensation cap which includes no salaries and was not collectively bargained. According to data cited by the objectors, since about 380K student-athletes would get roughly $125 for their labor, that would amount to “less than seven hours of work per year at the federal minimum wage” which they ridicule as “orders of magnitude less than the number of hours student-athletes provide to their schools in athletic labor.” More from McCann. North Carolina Women’s Soccer HC Anson Dorrance announces his retirement after leading the program for 45 seasons. AHC Damon Nahas will lead the team this season as Interim HC. Dorrance: "As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith's basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well. He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to recharge his batteries prior to the next season. When he didn't, he retired. After last season I initially was excited about the chance to bolster our roster, which we most certainly have done, but as preseason training camp went on, I realized I didn't have the same energy it takes to give 100% to this year's team. The players and staff, the university, Carolina athletics and our great fans deserve more, and the respect I have for the amazing legacy the current and former players have built led me to make this decision at this time." The Detroit Free Press shares an excerpt from an upcoming book by John Talty and Armen Keteyian titled “The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos.” The excerpt shares an inside look at former Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s yearslong dispute with the NCAA, what occurred behind the scenes leading up to Harbaugh’s two suspensions and communications between Harbaugh’s camp and U-M leadership. During a third interview with NCAA investigators, Talty and Keteyian note the investigators “had specifics: Benny’s, the famous Ann Arbor diner, on such and such a Saturday in February; Benny’s diner, on this or that Saturday in March. A 34-page transcript of the interview showed Harbaugh never wavered. I don’t remember any of those meetings. The investigator, attempting to trip Harbaugh up, spun what [Harbaugh’s attorney Tom] Mars later termed a ‘word salad’ question he was forced to interpret.” Mars: “If you were in a civil case, taking a deposition, they would show you something, let’s see if this helps your recollection. They didn’t do that.” Eventually, Mars asked the investigators if they would provide evidence that Harbaugh was, in fact, at Benny’s on the day in question. They provided a “small mountain of material — receipts, telephone records, an eyewitness account of Harbaugh and his daughter coming into Benny’s for takeout, chatting with a prospect and his father. Mars: “When I showed Jim the receipt, he said, ‘I guess I was there. You know anybody else that has hamburgers for breakfast? That’s what I order for breakfast. It’s obvious I was there. You can tell them I was there. I still don’t remember anything about being there.’” Lots more, including arguments over leaks to reporters, about which Mars says: “I got so bowed up and pissed off about it, I wrote them a letter and basically said I’m not going to give you [the cell phone and text records the NCAA demanded]. And if you push me, you take any more action that might [affect] Coach Harbaugh, I’ll sue you for tortious interference in Benton County, Arkansas. It got very personal and they backed off.” (link)

New Hampshire AD Allison Rich sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the key relationships that have defined her career trajectory thus far, including those with mentors, mentees, direct reports, presidents, peers and more. Rich also digs into the Wildcats for Life campaign and the importance of reconnecting with UNH alumni, provides insight into adjusting communication styles and reconciling differences in expectations with a boss, and how she’s used competitive moments to propel her career forward. Rich explains that she “did have a boss who came in, an athletic director who came in and replaced the athletic director who hired me. And I thought I was doing great work and I was connected on campus and in the community and doing all the things that I need to do in building, and he wasn't hearing about it. So, he had no idea what I was doing and it really drove home to me that I needed to share all the things that I was working on, the things that I was doing, and the thoughts that I had about what we could be doing or should be doing. And I've taken that with me [to] every job since, whether as a subordinate or as a supervisor. Communication is going to be the key. Without it, people make up their own reality and that doesn't always work well.” Now two years into her tenure, Rich says the Wildcats are being deliberate about engaging with alumni. “And it wasn’t an ‘I’m here, can I have some money?’ But it was ‘Here’s what we're doing, we’d love to have you a part of this, whatever that means for whatever phase you are in your life. … It all comes down to relationships.” Full conversation on ADU. Team USA finished the Paris Olympics tied with China for the most gold medals (40) while running away with the overall medal count. (link); Based on the new alignment of conferences, the ACC led all leagues with 89 total medals, including 36 golds, followed by the SEC (80, 33G), Big Ten (78, 23G), Big 12 (27, 11G) and Ivy League (15, 10G). Overall, current and former collegiate Olympians earned 329 medals in Paris, including 126 gold medals. Full rundown for each conference. (link); National College Football Writer Bryan Fischer notes that Stanford’s haul of 39 medals (12 gold) is the most by any one school at one Olympics. Counting medals won as part of the same relay, boat or team as one collective medal, Cardinal student-athletes accounted for 27 event medals. If Stanford was a country, it would’ve finished tied with Canada in 11th place. (link)

Latest from The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner on the path forward for Oregon State & Washington State: “My understanding is that the Cougars and Beavers are, in fact, in discussions with the Big 12 and ACC, but those discussions are limited to football scheduling for 2025 and beyond. Joining the Big 12 isn’t an option for WSU and OSU. The Big 12 doesn’t want them, which is unfortunate but makes sense. What has changed in the past year that would prompt the conference to reverse course on its membership strategy? To spur ESPN and Fox to spend money they aren’t currently spending? (Answer: Nothing has changed.) That said, if the ACC implodes, the calculation changes — for both the ACC and, perhaps, the Big 12. As long as the current conference structure exists, there is no path for the Cougars and Beavers into the Big 12 in the next few years.” (link)

Meanwhile, new on Connect: ACC Deputy Commissioner/Chief of External Strategy Amy Yakola joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Bryan Fischer. The two discuss building communications strategies around adding conference members, supporting teams in postseason runs, navigating the response to ongoing lawsuits and lots more. Yakola on adding Cal, Stanford and SMU: “There’s a lot of similarities there. I mean there's obviously the ones that everybody points out where you've got different time zones, but when you look at what those institutions stand for and what the ACC has long stood for, there's a lot of things that make a lot of sense in there. And I really think our schools and the conference office and certainly the leadership of the commissioner has done a really nice job of getting as prepared as possible, whether it's scheduling, whether it’s announcing future championships and just sort of the integration of them so that we are as successful as we can be beginning this summer.” Full Q&A. Houston Christian AD Steve Moniaci says HCU is slowly but surely upgrading facilities “to where they look like Division I facilities” and notes the Huskies are talking with CVS to end the lease on the store that sits on HCU’s property on one side of the football stadium. “We’re just waiting on that lease from the CVS to get out of the way and then we’ll get the other side of this stadium built.” (link)

Canada Soccer CEO/General Secretary/former UC Davis AD Kevin Blue responds to Florida professor Molly Harry’s revisit of his 2019 AthleticDirectorU article, “Rethinking the Rising Expenses in College Athletics and the Non-Profit Paradox.” Blue: “I do think the theory holds up very well. Expenses still rise at the rate of revenues (or faster!). There is still no for-profit incentive to control costs to make money (may change if PE actually gets involved). And paying athletes via revenue sharing or NIL is just a modern (and fairer) expression of ‘spend to win.’ It’s just that the rules allow payments now and they didn’t before. Paying players will not cause overall spending to soften. Spending will continue to rise in direct proportion to revenue - and in response to the spending of the highest revenue earners - until there are financial rules in place. Spending is more fairly distributed to athletes now, but the theoretical basis for why costs go up is the same.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown breaks down how several universities are reaching out to Latino fans and points to UTRGV as having “perhaps the most creative broadcast solution I’m aware of.” Brown notes that some students and employees even commute from Mexico every day, so “engaging with a Latino population isn’t just a box to check or some aspirational goal. It has to be part of the institution’s holistic mission, something they do every day.” To do so, Roadrunners Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Jonah Goldberg explains UTRGV began working with Televisa to produce three Saturday baseball games for broadcast in Mexico. The partnership has expanded to also include a men’s basketball game, a women’s basketball game, and multiple baseball games. Roadrunners Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Strategic Initiatives Sara Hernandez: “We know that Televisa is a popular channel in Mexico, so we know there’s the potential to be reaching that market. But this has to go beyond just analytics. This is also about showing that we’re making that effort to reach our fans…some things are bigger than just how many people are watching.” Meanwhile, Cal State Bakersfield last year brought in the U-20 squad of Club América, one of the most famous clubs in Mexico. Over 2,100 fans showed up, an atmosphere that Roadrunners AD Kyle Conder described to Brown as a “party”, one with better attendance than the typical fall season. In previous years, CSUB also hosted the U-20 for Club Tijuana Xolos. Lots more from Brown. (link)

AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl believes college football is headed to a better place and tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “Anytime we can have opportunities for people to be involved in our profession, that’s a good thing. There was some concern from some of the coaches that I’ve worked with in the Group of Five, but I think the waters will distill. College football is going to be in a much better place, and there are more opportunities for guys that have a chance to coach.” Bohl adds that “College Football Playoff expansion is a great thing. And I think any negative is going to be minute compared to the benefits.” (link)

Bowl games are increasingly leaning into the “silliness” to engage with fans, and ESPN’s David Hale observes such silliness may be necessary as the games continue to be plagued by opt-outs. For instance, the “Duke's Mayo Bowl celebrates the shirtless guys caught on camera eating directly from the jar with a spoon during the game or setting up the broadcasters with a nice jar of mayo to enjoy between calls. The Cheez-It Citrus Bowl…managed to steal a little buzz from its cousin by advertising that its mascot was not edible.” The aforementioned cousin, the Pop-Tarts Bowl (also operated by Florida Citrus Sports), received 15x more media mentions than any other bowl and eight times the social media traffic of any other December bowl game, and Hale posits: “All of the silliness is possible for two reasons. The first is that those bowls have a title sponsor eager to lean into the fun. The second is the one thing most fans seem to see as a problem: The stakes are low. … When bowls first entered the college football lexicon, there was no expectation they'd be a metric in the larger evaluation of a team's season. Heck, national titles were handed out before bowl games were played.” Florida Citrus Sports CMO Matt Repchak: “These are exhibition games. They're meant to be fun, a good watch on television and a great vacation for the people who come and the teams who are participating.” Looking ahead, several bowl directors tell Hale they'd be open to nixing conference tie-ins once contracts expire in favor of allowing bowls to select the best overall matchups after the playoff field is set – ideally allowing bowls to secure games between teams with the fewest opt-outs and the most enthusiasm about the game and the venue. More from Hale. (link)

In addition to budget cuts announced by New Orleans last week, Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody reports Western Illinois, Rider, Valparaiso and Queens Charlotte also announced cutbacks related to declining enrollment, FAFSA delays and other issues. At Western Illinois, 36 faculty members did not have their contracts renewed. According to local media reports, the university needs to trim its budget by $22M and has managed to hit $13.4M of that target already, but more personnel cuts are expected. Rider cut 31 positions last week. Of those 31 jobs, none were faculty roles, and 17 were vacant. Of the 14 active employees who lost their positions, three were offered other positions at the university, according to a spokesperson who noted that the reduction in force will save Rider a little more than $2M. Valpo announced plans to cut 30 academic programs and an unspecified number of faculty posts, and Queens Charlotte is making unspecified job and budget cuts after missing undergraduate enrollment targets by around 100 students. The university blamed the “turbulent” launch of the new FAFSA for causing “many students to delay their decision about where to attend college, or to pursue other paths altogether.” (link)

Private equity firms continue to explore NASCAR for potential investments, and Race Team Alliance Chairman/Fortress Investment Group Co-Founder Rob Kauffman tells SBJ’s Adam Stern: “There are two things that are happening at the same time: There’s been a big growth in the financialization of sports and the maturing of it as a business. So now, more people are looking around at, ‘What stones haven’t already been turned over?’ And motor racing has had a relatively modest amount of that activity historically.” Stern notes that “teams operate as independent contractors and don’t own equity in NASCAR itself. There are 36 charters, which guarantee starting spots and revenue streams from every race, and team owners who have the charters can sell them when they get out of the sport. Those guaranteed elements, combined with NASCAR’s new seven-year, $7.7B media rights deals, helped juice the market for outside investment.” Former Richard Petty Motorsports Majority Owner Andrew Murstein: “Other pro sports team owners are now looking at NASCAR, as team values are still very low especially compared to other sports. Savvy investors like Marc Lasry have sold their interests in the NBA and have invested in NASCAR as they feel it has a lot more upside.” Meanwhile, Stern explains that “NASCAR is negotiating a new charter agreement with teams and — showing how active the private equity sector is — drafts include rules for such investments. The guidelines could include a ban on sovereign wealth funds in NASCAR.” More. (link)
