He also will receive $280K in annual supplemental income, up from $120K. UMD President Darryll Pines: "In a transformative time in the collegiate landscape, Damon has proved to be an extremely effective leader in guiding our athletic department to championship heights, both on and off the playing fields. He has positioned our Terrapins for long-term success on the national stage and I couldn't be more pleased to have him leading the department for years to come." (link, link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould says on the Canzano & Wilner podcast that Washington State and Oregon State being the subject of several realignment rumors isn’t without its benefits. “All that buzz on social media and all that interest and the rumor mill and all of that, there certainly is some value in it from the perspective of, that means we have communities who care about what we’re doing. … We want passionate fans across college sports that care about what we’re doing. From that perspective, it’s good. … The rumors are challenging when they aren’t accurate and when there’s misinformation out there. At times, it becomes difficult to manage relationships, expectations, anxieties and all these other things when there’s misinformation. It’s part of the world we’re living in now. The good news is I have really strong communication with (WSU and OSU), and they are kept well-briefed on what’s going on and what’s not going on.” (link)

Meanwhile, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown explains why he thinks the conference realignment waters will remain calm for the next few months, starting with the situation in the ACC. Absent an outside party paying for an “expedited solution,” Brown expects the ongoing legal dispute between the league and Florida State and Clemson to continue playing out in the legal system. “The more interesting question, to me, isn’t what various judges and lawyers end up doing with a very complicated contract law question…but where Florida State, and to a lesser extent, Clemson, think they’re going if they leave the ACC.” Brown cites the “explicit political challenges for Southern expansion for the Big Ten” as one potential hurdle, explaining that “for most issues, the political orientation of these schools or regents wouldn’t matter. But it’s important to remember that the actual big votes in conference policy come down to presidents, and presidents are accountable to regents or boards who may have been appointed by governors or statehouses. As we saw with COVID, if you have conference membership that approaches a governance question from very different political constituencies, you can have problems.” Uncertainty surrounding the House settlement also has several schools idling. “That’s why you shouldn't be surprised if say, the Missouri Valley takes a while before extending any membership invites to replace Missouri State…it’s probably too early for any potential member to know if they can meet the right financial commitments.” More. With football season rapidly approaching, The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder notes that Big Ten “teams will finally execute the travel logistics that staffers and athletic directors have spent the last few years preparing for.” Washington AD Pat Chun tells Snyder: “I think this year is going to be a lot of information and data collection. A lot of interviewing of student-athletes, talking to them and seeing (what works best). I think everyone’s going to be in the same boat and everyone wants to do what’s best for their student-athletes, so I think it allows all the schools after the year to share some of the best practices, things they would do differently and I think as a league we all will get better at it.” Snyder wonders just how willing athletic departments will be to share any advantages they identify, but Chun remarks: “I think when it comes to student-athlete health and wellness, everyone is always open to sharing. If it’s competitive it’s different. Health and wellness drives this league, so we’ll always share information that’s to the betterment of their health and wellness. We’re not going to sacrifice that.” One particular point of interest will involve coast-to-coast flights as Snyder notes that State College Regional Airport, located four miles from Penn State’s Beaver Stadium,” isn’t suitable for certain aircraft types like the Boeing 737-800, 737-900 and 757-300. … Flights going across the country must stop and refuel, or football teams will need to take a smaller plane if they aim to travel nonstop. This means they will either have to take two planes to land in State College or take one larger plane, fly to Harrisburg and drive 100 miles to State College.” More from Snyder. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit examines how Army West Point funds its athletic program, noting the Black Knights reported $63.5M in total operating revenue in FY23, which was less than the two other DI service academies, Navy ($68.1M) and Air Force ($81.2M). Additionally, the department brought in $6.4M in revenue from away-game guarantees, nearly matching its total home ticket gate of $6.46M. For this upcoming season, Army is set to receive at least $1.475M from CBS Sports for the broadcast rights to its home games, and a minimum of $2.95M from Learfield for its multimedia rights. In addition to its guaranteed rights fee, Army also receives 50% of any adjusted gross revenue Learfield earns above $5.9M. In its NCAA financial report for 2023, Army reported total media rights earnings of $4.05M. Also from Libit: “The contract stipulates that if the university were to join any new FBS conference, as it has now done, then the school and the MMR company shall ‘engage in good faith discussions regarding mutually agreed upon increases’ to the payments. Asked whether they are now negotiating terms in light of Army’s jump to the AAC, neither the school nor Learfield answered directly,” instead providing the following joint statement: “Learfield has been a trusted and long-time partner of Army Athletics, and regardless of the circumstances or factors involved, we look forward to remaining partners for years to come and continuing to innovate for both fans and brands alike.” (link)

According to the NCAA’s NIL Assist dashboard, 22.7% of reported NIL deals in Power 4 women's sports come from basketball, followed by a reported 18.5% in softball. Volleyball was next at 15.2%, followed by soccer (12.8%), lacrosse (12.3%) and gymnastics at 5%. On3’s Jeremy Crabtree notes that at the Group of 5 level, 29.4% of the reported deals are from women's basketball, followed by softball (21.4%) and soccer (18.5%). The rest of the women's G5 sports are “well under 10%.” Also from Crabtree: “The reported data for women's sports indicates average Power Four athlete earnings are $7,947, the average disclosed value is $554 and the median value is $55. The average reported earnings from the Group of Five female athletes highlights the money-making potential of playing at a top conference school. Group of Five women athletes reported an average earning of $1,425 through NIL deals, the average disclosed value is $230 and the median value is $50. … When football and basketball are removed from data, women athletes compare quite favorably to male athletes. For example, the average earnings for Power Four male athletes outside of football and basketball is $5,566. That's $2,381 below the Power Four women's average total earnings. With the huge growth of women's college basketball over the past year and massive NIL stars like Paige Bueckers, Flau'jae Johnson and Juju Watkins returning, it's not a surprise to see the average total earnings for Power Four basketball players at $16,222. But for NIL deals involving social media – which is a huge driver for women athletes and brands – the average total earnings jumps to $28,077 and an average of $6,752 per disclosure.” (link)

According to KBTX’s Travis Brown, Texas A&M student-athletes brought in $19.4M in NIL deals during FY24, up from $6.2M in FY23. Brown notes that “since NIL compensation was made legal in the state of Texas on July 1, 2021, A&M athletes have earned a total of $28.7M in NIL deals. … Of that three-year total, 97% of the earnings went to athletes in men’s sports. In Year 3, men’s athletes took home $18.9M, up from $6.02M last year. Women’s sports made a significant leap in Year 3, from $154,721 to $528,184. However, it encompasses 3% of A&M’s total NIL earnings." (link)

The family of Brandon Travis, the New Mexico student who was killed in a shootout with former New Mexico State men’s basketball player Mike Peake two years ago, has filed a wrongful death suit against NMSU, Aggies AD Mario Moccia, former Men’s Basketball HC Greg Heiar and former AC Dominique Taylor. The complaint alleges NMSU, Moccia, Heiar and Taylor were responsible for a “toxic culture” within the men’s basketball program that led to Travis’ death in November of 2022. From the suit: “As a direct and proximate result of the acts and omissions of the employees, agents, and/or apparent agents of Defendant NMSU, to include Defendants Moccia, Heiar, and Taylor, Brandon Travis was killed.” The lawsuit asks for direct and consequential damages including “reasonable and necessary funeral and burial expenses, the physical and emotional suffering experienced by Brandon Travis between the time of injury and death, cost of suit, attorney fees” and other damages. With the House settlement looming, Nebraska AD Troy Dannen plans to hold a summit with coaches to discuss the finer points of revenue sharing, noting that “there’s never been a delineation between, ‘What is an outside hitter worth?’ vs. a setter vs. a libero. … Coaches have work to do in this, too, deciding where they need to invest their money, and how. There’s a lot of thought that goes into it. Everybody becomes a general manager.” With the issue of Title IX’s application still up in the air, Dannen adds: “No matter what answer people have, a court's going to probably have a chance to intercede. There are myriad questions, and there may be nobody to answer it, especially in an election year. The best we can hope for is we all operate consistently.” (link)

Despite recent success in scheduling men’s basketball opponents from the Big Ten and Big East, Dayton AD Neil Sullivan isn’t ready to say this part of his job has gotten easier. “I think it’s hard to say because each game and each opportunity has just been so unique on its own merits. It’d be tough for me to draw a trend line. I think the reality is that as conferences consolidate — and we’re now down to the Power 4, so to speak — they’re continuing to add games and play 20-game schedules. When you start looking at 18-team conferences, I regret to say it, but I think it’s going to continue to be as challenging as it’s been.” Sullivan also notes the landscape is “changing very significantly, and it’s something that we pay attention to every day. Obviously, we’re in the rotation of the best national preseason tournaments. That has been really critical for our fan base, for our television exposure and for our resume. But they are changing. I think you’re going to see some of these tournaments move to four teams. You’re going to see NIL. You’re going to see a changing business model. It’s something that we have our eye on. I think that our basketball performance and our fan base gives us the opportunity to stay in the mix for a number of these, but I do think that over the next few years we’re going to see them look different.” (link)

In the first of a multipart interview with KSEE’s Scott Bemis, Fresno State AD Garrett Klassy talks about fundraising for new athletics facilities and says: “I took a facility tour last week and there's a lot of things we need to do just to help the teams win as well as give the student-athletes the support they need to graduate and prepare them for life after Fresno State. So, I haven't made a determination on what those steps are going to be, but within the next six months you're going to see a strategic plan and vision from me that outlines really the fundraising goals. As you know, NIL is a big piece of that now too, and so I told a group in Visalia I understand there's some infrastructure [upgrades] we need at the football stadium, but would you rather have bad bathrooms and a great football team or great bathrooms and an okay football team?” Klassy also emphasizes the importance of creating new revenue streams: “You’re going to see us operate more like a professional sports franchise and try to monetize as many opportunities as we can because right now the NCAA is allowing corporate logos on the football field. I think jersey patches are coming next, so you're going to see us really actively involved in trying to get companies involved – and not just corporate sponsorships, but also name, image and likeness.” (link)

Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham tells JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher that “I think there is a major realignment coming, and it’ll be a big one. I think it will create even more of a divide and exclusivity for the teams that are on the right side of that line. 20 months to four years? How about that for a time frame? In my opinion, it’s going to look very much like an NFL minor league. I see an expansion of the playoff with that to 16 teams. The short version is Super Conferences. I think it’s going to boil down to maybe 40-60 teams in the Super Conference. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t play anybody but other Super Conference teams. Make that a division as far as who you play. Like I said, a full-blown playoff. Whether or not the players will be employees, officially, remains to be seen, but I think that’s very likely. I think that’s where it’s heading.” How does a football program build its brand? “Winning. When you win your brand follows suit, builds, and you become more nationally known. And that’s really the long and short of it. When you get on those national stages and have the opportunity to play in Rose Bowls and playoffs and that type of thing, although we haven’t got the opportunity to play in the playoffs yet. That’s still on our list of things that we need to accomplish as a program. But that is the bottom line. You’ve got to have the opportunity to be on those national stages, and you’ve got to perform well. When you’re there, you’ve got to be competitive.” Full Q&A. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the legal objections to the House settlement submitted by former Yale rowing student-athlete Grace E. Menke and five others who are, or were, members of the Yale, Oregon State, George Washington and Texas crew teams. McCann explains that their “core argument is the settlement would continue to deprive college athletes, particularly women athletes, of their rightful compensation and illogically substitute one illegal cartel for another. … The objectors contend while thousands of football and men’s basketball players would receive more than $100K, nearly all women athletes, save for ‘select basketball players,’ would be paid a comparatively meager $125. This arrangement, the objectors assert, ‘reinforc[es] wrongful gender inequities instead of remedying them’ and would constitute ‘a major setback for efforts to achieve gender equity in college athletics.’” Further, the former student-athletes contend the settlement would replace one price-fixing scheme with another that imposes a compensation cap which includes no salaries and was not collectively bargained. According to data cited by the objectors, since about 380K student-athletes would get roughly $125 for their labor, that would amount to “less than seven hours of work per year at the federal minimum wage” which they ridicule as “orders of magnitude less than the number of hours student-athletes provide to their schools in athletic labor.” More from McCann. North Carolina Women’s Soccer HC Anson Dorrance announces his retirement after leading the program for 45 seasons. AHC Damon Nahas will lead the team this season as Interim HC. Dorrance: "As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith's basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well. He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to recharge his batteries prior to the next season. When he didn't, he retired. After last season I initially was excited about the chance to bolster our roster, which we most certainly have done, but as preseason training camp went on, I realized I didn't have the same energy it takes to give 100% to this year's team. The players and staff, the university, Carolina athletics and our great fans deserve more, and the respect I have for the amazing legacy the current and former players have built led me to make this decision at this time." The Detroit Free Press shares an excerpt from an upcoming book by John Talty and Armen Keteyian titled “The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos.” The excerpt shares an inside look at former Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s yearslong dispute with the NCAA, what occurred behind the scenes leading up to Harbaugh’s two suspensions and communications between Harbaugh’s camp and U-M leadership. During a third interview with NCAA investigators, Talty and Keteyian note the investigators “had specifics: Benny’s, the famous Ann Arbor diner, on such and such a Saturday in February; Benny’s diner, on this or that Saturday in March. A 34-page transcript of the interview showed Harbaugh never wavered. I don’t remember any of those meetings. The investigator, attempting to trip Harbaugh up, spun what [Harbaugh’s attorney Tom] Mars later termed a ‘word salad’ question he was forced to interpret.” Mars: “If you were in a civil case, taking a deposition, they would show you something, let’s see if this helps your recollection. They didn’t do that.” Eventually, Mars asked the investigators if they would provide evidence that Harbaugh was, in fact, at Benny’s on the day in question. They provided a “small mountain of material — receipts, telephone records, an eyewitness account of Harbaugh and his daughter coming into Benny’s for takeout, chatting with a prospect and his father. Mars: “When I showed Jim the receipt, he said, ‘I guess I was there. You know anybody else that has hamburgers for breakfast? That’s what I order for breakfast. It’s obvious I was there. You can tell them I was there. I still don’t remember anything about being there.’” Lots more, including arguments over leaks to reporters, about which Mars says: “I got so bowed up and pissed off about it, I wrote them a letter and basically said I’m not going to give you [the cell phone and text records the NCAA demanded]. And if you push me, you take any more action that might [affect] Coach Harbaugh, I’ll sue you for tortious interference in Benton County, Arkansas. It got very personal and they backed off.” (link)

New Hampshire AD Allison Rich sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the key relationships that have defined her career trajectory thus far, including those with mentors, mentees, direct reports, presidents, peers and more. Rich also digs into the Wildcats for Life campaign and the importance of reconnecting with UNH alumni, provides insight into adjusting communication styles and reconciling differences in expectations with a boss, and how she’s used competitive moments to propel her career forward. Rich explains that she “did have a boss who came in, an athletic director who came in and replaced the athletic director who hired me. And I thought I was doing great work and I was connected on campus and in the community and doing all the things that I need to do in building, and he wasn't hearing about it. So, he had no idea what I was doing and it really drove home to me that I needed to share all the things that I was working on, the things that I was doing, and the thoughts that I had about what we could be doing or should be doing. And I've taken that with me [to] every job since, whether as a subordinate or as a supervisor. Communication is going to be the key. Without it, people make up their own reality and that doesn't always work well.” Now two years into her tenure, Rich says the Wildcats are being deliberate about engaging with alumni. “And it wasn’t an ‘I’m here, can I have some money?’ But it was ‘Here’s what we're doing, we’d love to have you a part of this, whatever that means for whatever phase you are in your life. … It all comes down to relationships.” Full conversation on ADU. Team USA finished the Paris Olympics tied with China for the most gold medals (40) while running away with the overall medal count. (link); Based on the new alignment of conferences, the ACC led all leagues with 89 total medals, including 36 golds, followed by the SEC (80, 33G), Big Ten (78, 23G), Big 12 (27, 11G) and Ivy League (15, 10G). Overall, current and former collegiate Olympians earned 329 medals in Paris, including 126 gold medals. Full rundown for each conference. (link); National College Football Writer Bryan Fischer notes that Stanford’s haul of 39 medals (12 gold) is the most by any one school at one Olympics. Counting medals won as part of the same relay, boat or team as one collective medal, Cardinal student-athletes accounted for 27 event medals. If Stanford was a country, it would’ve finished tied with Canada in 11th place. (link)
