Group of 5 commissioners will meet in Dallas next week to discuss some of the most urgent issues facing their membership, including the “possibility of a reshaped postseason incorporating the bowl system, an arrangement that may generate additional television dollars and provide a secondary championship for those G5 teams not competing in the CFP,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “We are open to all of that. That would be really interesting and have some value. What if it’s like an NIT of football?” Nevarez is quick to point out that the G5 is not relinquishing its spot in the College Football Playoff. “We’re not touching that.” Nevarez also reveals that during CFP negotiations in February and March, power conference leaders “threatened” to remove the G5’s automatic bid, but, “to their credit, it never came off the table.” Former AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco adds: “If we had lost access, we would have taken some kind of action. That would have been ruinous for us.” With no format finalized for the final six years of the CFP contract, Dellenger emphasizes the need for G5 teams to win over the next two seasons. Aresco: “I hear it in the [CFP commissioners] room. You don’t really belong! We’re giving you the spot that could have gone to a higher-ranked team!’” More from Dellenger. (link)

Notre Dame has suspended its men’s swimming program for a minimum of one year following an investigation into misconduct within the team. Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua: “The external review confirmed and expanded on our initial concerns about a deeply embedded team culture dismissive of Notre Dame’s standards for student-athletes, including our expectation that they treat one another with dignity and respect. This independent, external review also documented numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions despite clear and recurrent training provided to all our student-athletes by our Athletics Compliance staff about those rules. … We profoundly regret that the small number of team members who did not participate in the conduct, and those who were planning on joining the team this fall, will also suffer the consequences of this decision. We deeply value our responsibilities as educators and our commitment to our student-athletes, and will work with other University offices as appropriate to provide support to those affected by our decision.” Bevacqua goes on to note the “coaching staff participated in and fully cooperated with all aspects of the external review. The review found that the staff was not aware of gambling or the scope and extent of other troubling behaviors because team members effectively concealed such behaviors from the coaches and staff through concerted efforts. According to the review, when the staff became aware of certain isolated incidents of unacceptable conduct, they treated them seriously and professionally.” Full statement. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports the Notre Dame men’s swimming team “effectively created its own sports book for the purpose of wagering on their swimming performances, sources say. A majority of the returning 2024–25 team is believed to have placed bets. ‘Over/under’ lines were established for a swimmer’s times in certain races, with wagers being placed on the outcomes. There are no known gambling companies that take wagers or produce betting lines on college swimming. … Some Fighting Irish swimmers also placed wagers on other sports and involving other schools, sources said, such as the NCAA basketball tournaments.” Fighting Irish HC Chad Lindauer and his staff were not disciplined, and Lindauer says: “While it has been a difficult few months, I am confident that Notre Dame took the correct steps to ensure this misconduct does not continue. Our team culture is my utmost priority, and I am committed to improving upon the student-athlete experience both in and out of the pool. I am hopeful we will emerge from this situation stronger than ever. I remain committed to the women’s swimming and diving program and the men’s diving program at Notre Dame, and I am looking forward to working with them this season to accomplish our goals and reach new heights.” (link)

Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich analyzes the recent objections to the House settlement and notes that the objection filed by six current and former rowing student-athletes (the “crew objection”) “came out of nowhere.” Ehrlich: “I have not seen any lawsuit filed or even joined by the athletes involved in [the crew] objection. And perhaps more notably, I also [haven’t] seen anything filed against the NCAA by the two law firms representing those crew athletes, San Francisco-based Conrad Metlinzky Kane and Chicago-based MoloLamken. If you are inclined to cynicism, you may think that the Choh and Fontenot objections are rooted in some degree of selfishness: they want their individual lawsuits to continue.” Meanwhile, Ehrlich points out that MoloLamken…represented seven players who filed a motion objecting to the [NFL’s CTE] settlement on a variety of grounds—including the fact that the settlement gave the NFL “a near-absolute release” from any future claims. This objection was successful.” Ehrlich goes on to point out that the crew objectors argue the House settlement relies on the assumption that women’s sports are destined to bring in less money, and as such that their athletes inherently have less NIL value. “I think that could strike a chord with many…including perhaps the female judge who will be determining the fairness of the settlement agreement. … Taking these points together, I think there’s a possibility that Judge Wilken finds that the settlement is, in fact, an unjustified end-around to collective bargaining, and finds that the representation of the plaintiff class is too skewed towards compensating male athletes at the expense of the women, or perhaps that the caps unjustifiably restrict women to the favor of the men.” More. Florida’s NIL negotiations with now-Georgia QB Jaden Rashada “started with a covert recruiting meeting with a big-time booster under the guise of a Lamborghini dropoff,” according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, who cites Rashada’s updated federal lawsuit against Gators HC Billy Napier, prominent UF supporter Hugh Hathcock and former staffer Marcus Castro-Walker. From the amended complaint: “Upon entering the meeting room, Castro-Walker informed Jaden’s father, Harlen, that one of UF’s biggest boosters was there that day and that he wanted to speak with Jaden. Castro-Walker explained that Hathcock was there to drop off his Lamborghini for a photo shoot, but ‘you didn’t see him,’ acknowledging the forbidden yet undeniable affiliation between Hathcock and UF’s football program.” Hathcock entered through a back door, then “bragged that he was a big financial supporter of UF’s football program, and assured Jaden that UF’s football program was going to achieve much success under Coach Napier.” Attorneys for Napier have denied any wrongdoing on Napier’s part, but the suit claims that Hathcock’s talks with Rashada’s agents “made clear that his ability to fund lucrative NIL deals was the means to Napier’s recruiting end.” The complaint also called it “implausible” that Hathcock would offer to pay Rashada instead of other blue-chip passers without Napier’s instructions. The amended complaint includes a new count of civil conspiracy to coerce. The other seven counts remain the same; they’re related to fraud, negligence and interfering with contracts. (link)

+ ESPN has parted ways with Sunday NFL Countdown host Samantha Ponder and former Baylor QB/Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III in a pair of cost-cutting moves, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who notes: ”Ponder was entering the final season of a three-year deal worth more than $3M, sources briefed on her contract said. She only worked in the prestigious role of Sunday NFL Countdown host and was basically off for the rest of the year. ESPN generally reserves these types of schedules for the Joe Bucks, Troy Aikmans and Peyton Mannings of its world. NFL Live host Laura Rutledge and Get Up host Mike Greenberg are potential replacements for Ponder. The buyouts of Ponder and Griffin are the only moves ESPN is making at the moment, but it could choose to shed more salary by the end of September.” (link)

Liberty Mutual has filed suit against former Kentucky Swimming & Diving HC Lars Jorgensen and the plaintiffs suing him for sexual abuse, seeking a declaratory judgment that the personal liability portion of his insurance policies does not apply in this case, according to LEO Weekly’s Tim Sullivan, who adds: “In a July 2 letter, Liberty ‘denied any obligation to defend or indemnify Jorgensen in the underlying lawsuit,’ saying policy ‘exclusions for expected injury bar coverage for any alleged ‘bodily injury.’ Jorgensen missed the July 26 deadline for a response to the lawsuit brought by former UK swimmers and coaches. He is now represented by a new lawyer, Anthony Pernice, and the parties have agreed to allow him until Aug. 23 to respond.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd checks in with some of college football’s super duper seniors – players who are entering their sixth, seventh and, in one case, ninth year. Oklahoma State QB Alan Bowman, whose career began six seasons ago at Texas Tech, views his extended eligibility due to COVID and the transfer portal as a gift. “Even to be here [at Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas] is awesome. Fly on a private jet with Coach [Mike] Gundy and stay at the Bellagio. What are we doing?" Or, as he puts it to seventh-year Utah QB Cam Rising: "What else would we be doing, selling insurance?" For his part, Rising, who has dealt with a multitude of injuries throughout his career, says the ability to keep playing “got me out of the ‘victim’ mindset.” Meanwhile, Dodd notes that Miami (FL) TE Cam McCormick “has been around for eight versions of the iPhone since enrolling at Oregon in 2016.” The players’ careers also coincide with the most lucrative period for college athletes in history, to the point that Rising has his choice of free cars between the Utes’ NIL deal with Dodge and his own partnership with Toyota. Meanwhile, Bowman is thinking of turning his handlebar mustache into an NIL opportunity. "And it's friggin' orange. We're the Cowboys. Why not?" (link)

At least one candidate for Houston’s AD post met with UH leadership yesterday, according to CollegeAD, which reports that a Power 4 Deputy AD previously not linked with the search “has started to emerge in the process.” At this time, it remains unclear how many candidates the Cougars are interviewing, and CollegeAD notes: “In addition to current administrators, there continues to be the thought that at least one ‘outside the box’ candidate remains involved.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams the Tar Heels “have been approached numerous times about different private equity options, but nothing was appealing enough for us to pursue any further. The cost of capital for us is fairly low. They’ve got some good ideas and thoughts about some other uses of the capital, but we’re not there yet.” Cunningham declined to name the PE firms he had spoken to, but according to public records obtained by Sportico, one of his contacts was UNC alumnus Newman Delany, the son of former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who now serves as SVP of Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS). Libit: “In February, three months before the CAS joint venture would be publicly unveiled, Newman Delany sent Cunningham an email. According to Delany’s email, Mitchell Ziets, a stadium financing consultant who had been retained by UNC, had already ‘reached out to RedBird to see how we might fit into and benefit the capital stack.’ Delany proposed that he and some of his CAS cohorts ‘come down to Chapel Hill’ for a ‘broader conversation.’ A few weeks later, Cunningham received a note from Casey Schwab, CEO of Altius Sports Partners, the NIL consultancy, connecting the athletic director to Niraj Shah, co-founder of Otro Capital, which was launched out of RedBird last year.” Cunningham also tells Libit & Novy-Williams he thinks the top of the industry is headed for a shift toward internalizing operations, similar to what’s done in major pro leagues. Asked whether this dynamic has made him rethink his school’s MMR approach, rights currently held by Learfield through 2029, Cunningham answered: “Absolutely…college sports is going to look very different between now and 2029.” (link)

The allure of an Ivy League degree is becoming less important to student-athletes, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond and Robert O’Connell, who observe the conference has “has shed a load of talent over the past few months, with at least five of the conference’s best players leaving their esteemed schools to take advantage of loosened transfer rules, better facilities and potential endorsement deals at more decorated basketball programs. None of them went to another Ivy.” Former Penn men’s basketball student-athlete Tyler Perkins, who transferred to Villanova after his freshman season, tells them: “To get an internship at Goldman Sachs and stuff like that, that’s amazing. But I’m a basketball player, so I just wanted to do what was best for me.” Harvard men’s hoops student-athlete Chisom Okpara, who transferred to Stanford, confirms that the opportunity to earn more money is a topic of conversation among players. “I will say, once I entered the [transfer] portal and heard the opportunities available for NIL, I was like, ‘Wow. This is a serious matter.’” Princeton AD John Mack says it’s up to Ivy administrators to evolve and stay competitive and adds: “We want our student-athletes to have those [NIL] opportunities, but what we don’t want is for them to turn down the opportunity to change their life in a long-term way just for the short-term benefit of getting paid to go somewhere else.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne says the Crimson Tide’s proposed new basketball arena would be for competition only, explaining that “day to day, for a coach, their classroom is the court. What we've talked about for an arena is a competition-only arena. We needed to address the practice side of it, and we needed to address it for both programs. We're building a new practice facility just off of Coleman Coliseum, so eventually with Coleman, no matter what happens to it long-term, we will have this separate facility. We'll have a new court for the men, the women will take over where the men have been." Byrne says of the new practice facility: "We're doing first-class, nice locker rooms. When recruits walk into this place it'll be as good a setup as anybody has from a basketball development standpoint. That’s one of the things that’s a big selling piece for both of our programs, but especially with what Nate [Oats] has done to develop young men." (link)

Penn State has received a $25M Beaver Stadium Founders Gift from the Misitano family and PAM Health for the Beaver Stadium Revitalization project. Upon the completion of the project, the newly constructed West Tower naming opportunity will recognize the generous gift, the second-largest in the athletic department’s history. Nittany Lions AD Patrick Kraft: “Words cannot express the appreciation we have for the Misitano family and PAM Health for their commitment to be leaders in this important project to make Beaver Stadium even more iconic than it already is.” (link)

Texas Tech is the recipient of a $5M gift from alumnus Mike Wallace to support the South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project. Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt: "This facility will not take a backseat to anyone in the country when it officially opens in the coming weeks. This is all due to the support of numerous loyal supporters like Mike Wallace." This is Wallace’s second $5M contribution to the project. (link)

In light of Florida’s search for a GM for revenue sharing, Invaluable Sports’ Josh Delander points out that such a role is not the same as an NFL GM role. “The GM profile will (should) be different since NFL GMs are typically player personnel guys and known talent evaluators. College staffs already have these skill sets covered, along with recruiting personnel. RevCap GMs will (should) be process-driven, numbers-oriented, great negotiators, with high business acumen and confidence. Because in the NFL, GMs (mostly) have the final say on personnel decisions. But it will likely take years, if ever, for that to be the case in college, where the head coach wields all the power. Will the RevCap GM be able to stick to their plan, model, and process when the head coach (their boss), position coach, and fans want to overspend for a top transfer or recruit? Similar to the NFL GM, the best RevCap GMs will allow their Head Coach to operate more like they did pre-NIL → Xs and Os, build the culture, develop players and staff, etc.” (link)

SIUE AD Andrew Gavin talks about transitioning to the role from Wisconsin-Parkside (DII): “When people ask me what the transition was like, the easiest response is that it was pretty easy. I don’t mean that because the job’s easy, because every day is challenging. The work is really the same. It’s how do you support coaches and student-athletes? It’s how do you progress and get better? How do you connect with the community? How do you make budget? The work is the work. It was really familiar, after six years in an AD chair elsewhere, to come here and come to that realization myself that I know how to do this job right. There’s a learning curve of a new institution, new community, new people around you, but it was a quick transition for me.” For his second year on the job, Gavin says a “lot of the goals are doubling down on the work we did last year. For our coaches and student-athletes, that’s about putting a staff around them that I think can support their experience to help us make progress within each program and each student-athlete. … When I think about our future and the opportunity that we have is continuing to connect the entirety of our community around having Division I athletics here in the Metro East. One of the things we talked about last year is we are the Division I in the Metro East. We need to tell that story. We need to connect with everybody in our region. That’s what’s going to build a fan base. We are a huge part of the community but we can double down on that.” (link)

D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle is joined by Nebraska Deputy AD/COO Haven Fields on The Career Hustle, as Fields talks about what sparked his desire to serve student-athletes after his football career at Auburn, key people who invested in him, and what character traits he developed to prove he was ready for various leadership roles that have now spanned a 20-year career in DI athletics. Fields talks about the importance of being intentional and building genuine relationships regardless of the position a person holds. “I just think it’s important to be intentional about how you connect with people. For instance, You know I use the time and you know as I got to Washington I sent a document to probably 12 to 15 people with about 10 questions I was trying to expedite being in the middle of the year what I can learn about them, what I can learn about the institution from their seat, how they saw the culture, their goals and how you know things that they wanted to get accomplished and I met with everybody probably you know my first month or so there I met with each one of them to talk through that and it wasn't just about the document. … It wasn’t necessarily about going through all 10 questions, it was just taking things to start conversations. But because I did that and I took the time to send that to each one of them, they all felt really good and [it] put them at ease and it kind of disarmed the environment when they walked in the room to know they had someone that was really genuinely wanting to know about them. And I think that's the way you have to approach the day-to-day in particular when you’re coming into the department as a leader.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)
