At least one candidate for Houston’s AD post met with UH leadership yesterday, according to CollegeAD, which reports that a Power 4 Deputy AD previously not linked with the search “has started to emerge in the process.” At this time, it remains unclear how many candidates the Cougars are interviewing, and CollegeAD notes: “In addition to current administrators, there continues to be the thought that at least one ‘outside the box’ candidate remains involved.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams the Tar Heels “have been approached numerous times about different private equity options, but nothing was appealing enough for us to pursue any further. The cost of capital for us is fairly low. They’ve got some good ideas and thoughts about some other uses of the capital, but we’re not there yet.” Cunningham declined to name the PE firms he had spoken to, but according to public records obtained by Sportico, one of his contacts was UNC alumnus Newman Delany, the son of former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany, who now serves as SVP of Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS). Libit: “In February, three months before the CAS joint venture would be publicly unveiled, Newman Delany sent Cunningham an email. According to Delany’s email, Mitchell Ziets, a stadium financing consultant who had been retained by UNC, had already ‘reached out to RedBird to see how we might fit into and benefit the capital stack.’ Delany proposed that he and some of his CAS cohorts ‘come down to Chapel Hill’ for a ‘broader conversation.’ A few weeks later, Cunningham received a note from Casey Schwab, CEO of Altius Sports Partners, the NIL consultancy, connecting the athletic director to Niraj Shah, co-founder of Otro Capital, which was launched out of RedBird last year.” Cunningham also tells Libit & Novy-Williams he thinks the top of the industry is headed for a shift toward internalizing operations, similar to what’s done in major pro leagues. Asked whether this dynamic has made him rethink his school’s MMR approach, rights currently held by Learfield through 2029, Cunningham answered: “Absolutely…college sports is going to look very different between now and 2029.” (link)

The allure of an Ivy League degree is becoming less important to student-athletes, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond and Robert O’Connell, who observe the conference has “has shed a load of talent over the past few months, with at least five of the conference’s best players leaving their esteemed schools to take advantage of loosened transfer rules, better facilities and potential endorsement deals at more decorated basketball programs. None of them went to another Ivy.” Former Penn men’s basketball student-athlete Tyler Perkins, who transferred to Villanova after his freshman season, tells them: “To get an internship at Goldman Sachs and stuff like that, that’s amazing. But I’m a basketball player, so I just wanted to do what was best for me.” Harvard men’s hoops student-athlete Chisom Okpara, who transferred to Stanford, confirms that the opportunity to earn more money is a topic of conversation among players. “I will say, once I entered the [transfer] portal and heard the opportunities available for NIL, I was like, ‘Wow. This is a serious matter.’” Princeton AD John Mack says it’s up to Ivy administrators to evolve and stay competitive and adds: “We want our student-athletes to have those [NIL] opportunities, but what we don’t want is for them to turn down the opportunity to change their life in a long-term way just for the short-term benefit of getting paid to go somewhere else.” (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne says the Crimson Tide’s proposed new basketball arena would be for competition only, explaining that “day to day, for a coach, their classroom is the court. What we've talked about for an arena is a competition-only arena. We needed to address the practice side of it, and we needed to address it for both programs. We're building a new practice facility just off of Coleman Coliseum, so eventually with Coleman, no matter what happens to it long-term, we will have this separate facility. We'll have a new court for the men, the women will take over where the men have been." Byrne says of the new practice facility: "We're doing first-class, nice locker rooms. When recruits walk into this place it'll be as good a setup as anybody has from a basketball development standpoint. That’s one of the things that’s a big selling piece for both of our programs, but especially with what Nate [Oats] has done to develop young men." (link)

Upon the completion of the project, the newly constructed West Tower naming opportunity will recognize the generous gift, the second-largest in the athletic department’s history. Nittany Lions AD Patrick Kraft: “Words cannot express the appreciation we have for the Misitano family and PAM Health for their commitment to be leaders in this important project to make Beaver Stadium even more iconic than it already is.” (link)

Texas Tech is the recipient of a $5M gift from alumnus Mike Wallace to support the South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project. Red Raiders AD Kirby Hocutt: "This facility will not take a backseat to anyone in the country when it officially opens in the coming weeks. In light of Florida’s search for a GM for revenue sharing, Invaluable Sports’ Josh Delander points out that such a role is not the same as an NFL GM role. “The GM profile will (should) be different since NFL GMs are typically player personnel guys and known talent evaluators. College staffs already have these skill sets covered, along with recruiting personnel. RevCap GMs will (should) be process-driven, numbers-oriented, great negotiators, with high business acumen and confidence. Because in the NFL, GMs (mostly) have the final say on personnel decisions. But it will likely take years, if ever, for that to be the case in college, where the head coach wields all the power. Will the RevCap GM be able to stick to their plan, model, and process when the head coach (their boss), position coach, and fans want to overspend for a top transfer or recruit? Similar to the NFL GM, the best RevCap GMs will allow their Head Coach to operate more like they did pre-NIL → Xs and Os, build the culture, develop players and staff, etc.” (link)

SIUE AD Andrew Gavin talks about transitioning to the role from Wisconsin-Parkside (DII): “When people ask me what the transition was like, the easiest response is that it was pretty easy. I don’t mean that because the job’s easy, because every day is challenging. The work is really the same. It’s how do you support coaches and student-athletes? It’s how do you progress and get better? How do you connect with the community? How do you make budget? The work is the work. It was really familiar, after six years in an AD chair elsewhere, to come here and come to that realization myself that I know how to do this job right. There’s a learning curve of a new institution, new community, new people around you, but it was a quick transition for me.” For his second year on the job, Gavin says a “lot of the goals are doubling down on the work we did last year. For our coaches and student-athletes, that’s about putting a staff around them that I think can support their experience to help us make progress within each program and each student-athlete. … When I think about our future and the opportunity that we have is continuing to connect the entirety of our community around having Division I athletics here in the Metro East. One of the things we talked about last year is we are the Division I in the Metro East. We need to tell that story. We need to connect with everybody in our region. That’s what’s going to build a fan base. We are a huge part of the community but we can double down on that.” (link)

D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle is joined by Nebraska Deputy AD/COO Haven Fields on The Career Hustle, as Fields talks about what sparked his desire to serve student-athletes after his football career at Auburn, key people who invested in him, and what character traits he developed to prove he was ready for various leadership roles that have now spanned a 20-year career in DI athletics. Fields talks about the importance of being intentional and building genuine relationships regardless of the position a person holds. “I just think it’s important to be intentional about how you connect with people. For instance, You know I use the time and you know as I got to Washington I sent a document to probably 12 to 15 people with about 10 questions I was trying to expedite being in the middle of the year what I can learn about them, what I can learn about the institution from their seat, how they saw the culture, their goals and how you know things that they wanted to get accomplished and I met with everybody probably you know my first month or so there I met with each one of them to talk through that and it wasn't just about the document. … It wasn’t necessarily about going through all 10 questions, it was just taking things to start conversations. But because I did that and I took the time to send that to each one of them, they all felt really good and [it] put them at ease and it kind of disarmed the environment when they walked in the room to know they had someone that was really genuinely wanting to know about them. And I think that's the way you have to approach the day-to-day in particular when you’re coming into the department as a leader.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Florida A&M Interim President Timothy Beard today explained his evaluation and assessment of each senior leadership member played a role in the decision to make the sweeping changes announced yesterday as part of a 100-day action plan. “I’ve been studying the team. I’ve also been looking at the bold and striking strategic plan. I want to make sure the personnel is appropriate to make sure those strategies are completed. We make decisions based on the plan and accountability.” Beard declined to comment on specific “employee-type issues” but said there will be a plan in place to ensure there are no compromise in the level of service to students. “Students represent our number one client. If we fail them, we fail.” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast with Navigate Founder AJ Maestas to discuss the Ducks’ move to the Big Ten and the creative risks that have helped turn UO into a national brand over the past 20+ years. Mullens notes that “you have this marketing tool called college athletics – and specifically college football because of the reach – and how can you use that to benefit others? Benefit the institution? Benefit the community? Benefit the state? And so that's how you build that brand, starting with this vision of creating excitement. And it's been done in so many ways – facilities, uniforms, giant ducks in the White River – and so it has built that brand, as you and your team helped us quantify what that's meant to TV ratings, what that’s meant in market share, our place in college football. And now we have this incredible new opportunity to expand it to this conference with a rich tradition, huge loyal alumni and fan bases in new markets.” Mullens also talks about the “courage to be bold, to try things differently, and be first. … My very first week as the athletic director here, my first athletic director job, [Nike designer] Tinker [Hatfield] invited me to go look at what became that unique deep-in-the-woods basketball court,” which many people pushed back on. “But what became of uniforms and that court is people resisted it at first, but then it gets imitated. So that can show you the power of leaning into your DNA, of who you are…and even though at first you might say, ‘Well, that's a complete departure from what the rest of the industry is doing,’ it turns out to give you a competitive advantage.” Maestas adds that he believes “that’s one of the things that’s missing in college athletics. There’s this risk aversion. There's this low tolerance for the mistakes so then therefore people don't reach they don't take those risks.” Full podcast. (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon breaks down the specifics of Canadian junior hockey player Rylan Masterson’s lawsuit against the NCAA and 10 member institutions. First, McMahon notes the lawsuit says CHL players do not receive a salary, but instead receive a stipend of “no more than $600 per month.” The stipend is intended to cover living expenses and is not considered income for tax purposes. “That’s true. However, the main crux of the NCAA’s argument over the years had less to do with the CHL stipend and more with the NHL’s ability to assign professional players to CHL teams, which the NCAA argues classifies the CHL as a professional league. However, the lawsuit later points out other examples (in other NCAA sports) where professional inclusion has yet to result in a loss of eligibility, including Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky, who the lawsuit said made six-figures and was still allowed to compete as an NCAA swimmer.” The lawsuit calls the NCAA’s CHL rule a group boycott and argues it “puts 16-year-olds in the impossible position of deciding, at that young age, whether they will ever want to play Division I hockey.” Further: “The purpose of the Boycott is to harm Division I’s primary competitor, the CHL, by reducing its ability to recruit players in the Elite Young Player Services Market. It is not intended to promote or protect amateurism, if that is even a cognizable goal under the antitrust laws.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter tells McMahon: “Players definitely have a better chance of winning a case like this than they would have even just five years ago. I think that if the plaintiffs are successful in this, there are probably some other NCAA rules that might be challenged as well relating to who can play college sports and who can’t.” Lots more. Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502 Circle collective, tells On3’s Jeremy Crabtree that simply accumulating a war chest is not enough to measure success. “We're not just out here – and there are collectives around the country that do this – throwing money around. We've got a system. We have a plan. And we have a purpose behind what we do. And for us, it's not a race to spend the most amount of money. It's a race to put the most competitive team on the football field or basketball court." Furman explains that the collective’s plan focuses on smart fundraising tactics and launching a new media initiative that generates the "true NIL" the NCAA is looking for post-House. "From the get-go, we've been really creative. Everything that we do, we try to be first in the industry to do it. What we just launched with Floyd Street Media will be extremely successful. It'll have a lot of detail and player-driven content that's going to really showcase our athletes and gives us a pure NIL scope to college athletics. … We have the money to do what everyone else is doing, but at the same time, we want to build something around that as well. We want to build a community and build a sense of pride in what we're doing. … All of these schools are trying to sing the same tune of – we're bringing all these athletes here and they're not coming to finish fifth. These guys are coming here to win championships and play at the next level. How do we provide those resources? It's the same thing we've been doing in college athletics for a lot of years. And the schools that provide those resources are going to have the ability to recruit and retain and generate a return on their investments with wins and championships.” (link)

Georgia Tech and five-star offensive line recruit Josh Petty “agreed to terms of a three-year Roster Value deal with an annual payment of at least $800K,” according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who adds: “A source at Florida State, which lost out on Petty, told On3 that the offensive lineman ‘did not’ turn the final weeks of his recruitment into a bidding war.” Petty says: “Tech’s been very easy. Tech’s been very cooperative and efficient with working on that. I needed that number to be fair. Tech went beyond and above and really have taken care of me.” Nakos reports that “sources across the country have told On3 that programs have offered higher packages this cycle because of the pending House settlement, allowing schools to share $20M to $22M in revenue annually. Petty will enroll at Georgia Tech at the mid-year mark, months before revenue sharing is expected to begin. It’s unclear if those dollars are factored into his deal. While the 6-foot-4, 255-pound offensive lineman’s NIL package might sound jaw-dropping, it does not reset the market but rather matches it. Five-star offensive tackles David Sanders and Michael Fasusi have yet to announce commitments and are expected to command seven-figure agreements.” Petty’s father, James, on the need to work with an agent during the process: “We don’t know the NIL space. We don’t know what’s decent. We have to trust people like [Power Up Sports owner] Brian [Davis], who did a fantastic job of helping us understand these things. We don’t have a crystal ball into what a kid gets if they go play at Texas. Or what does a kid get if they go play for USC, right?” (link)

Dr. Keith Bell is suing Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin for one count of copyright infringement for two social media posts Kiffin made in 2016 and 2022. In the first post, the lawsuit states that Kiffin retweeted a passage from Bell's 1981 book "Winning Isn't Normal." In 2022, Kiffin posted a seven-paragraph passage under the heading "WINNING ISN'T NORMAL." Asked about the suit earlier this week, Kiffin said: "I didn't really pay attention to it. I'm not supposed to comment. I mean, what are we talking about? I will just say, I've never read the book. I don't even remember the quote that I tweeted or something. I'm not supposed to say that either." According to the complaint, Bell sent Kiffin cease-and-desist letters following each post and Kiffin failed to comply with the demand in 2022. The suit also argues that the use of the "Winning Isn't Normal" passage is commercial in nature because of Kiffin's salary, the volatility of SEC coaching jobs and the impact social media can have on recruiting. The complaint does not make a specific financial demand of Kiffin. (link)
