Houston has its new AD in New Mexico’s Eddie Nuñez. Intro presser set for Wednesday. UH President Renu Khator: “Eddie Nuñez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success during a time of great transformation in college athletics. His leadership will be critical as we continue to elevate our athletics programs, enhance the student-athlete experience and build on the tremendous momentum at the University of Houston.” UH System Board of Regents Chair Tilman Fertitta: “Eddie has spent much of his career living just few hours away in Baton Rouge, so he knows Houston and has many connections to the city. I know he will hit the ground running.” Nuñez has signed a five-year deal to lead the Cougars that will be reviewed by Regents next week. (link)

Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano on the departure of Scarlet Knights AD Pat Hobbs: “I think the combination of my relationships and new relationships that Pat had formed, it was good. It was good for football, it was good for the athletic department. We’re going to continue going in that direction.” As for what Schiano is looking for in a new leader: “I’m not going to get into that right now. I want to coach this team. I want to get ready to go play this game that’s (12) days away. You always want someone you can work with and that you’re vertically aligned. Our institution is vertically aligned, so let’s get someone that wants to join in and just make it better.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff & Deputy AD/Chief Strategy Officer Collin Sexton caught up with Connect’s Bryan Fischer to talk about all things related to the Gateway District project. On how much revenue could be unlocked as part of the overhaul, Goff, “We’re uniquely positioned. We haven’t had a stadium that’s had the right kind of premium mix, we haven’t had enough bodies in the stadium because the product on the field, for too long a timeframe, hadn’t been what everybody would want it to be, and so we’re really one of the very few Power 4 places in the country that has football revenues untapped. We see that as an exceptional opportunity. [...] The revenue growth football provides on overall revenue and revenue sharing is exciting stuff.” On not losing any momentum for hoops, Goff, “For as much time as we’re spending talking about football, I can assure you we’re spending just as much time talking about both basketballs. [...] And it isn’t about just, ‘How do we maintain?’ It’s about, ‘How do we build upon that success?’ That’s been our commitment to [Head] Coach [Bill] Self and anytime I’m talking about Men’s Basketball. How do we invest even greater, like spending $55M renovating Allen Fieldhouse and not leaving anything on the table. [...] It keeps every day stressing and straining to keep a program like that on an upward path.” Lots more. (link)

Intellectual property attorney David McKenzie shares a primer on mediation ahead of the ACC and Florida State’s mediation, which is set to begin this week. First, though, McKenzie notes he expects this “mediation will be brief. There’s no doubt that the ACC has the stronger legal case, and I expect the ACC will use this opportunity to probe FSU’s strategy before making a swift exit. The ACC is likely to propose settlement figures that FSU will find astronomical—yet, as I’ve consistently pointed out, ‘astronomical’ is exactly what these numbers are given the true value of live sports broadcasting in an era of cord-cutting and the impending shift to a direct-to-consumer model.” McKenzie goes on to point out that the “mediator is supposed to be neutral, but neutrality can be nuanced. A skilled mediator will have a deep understanding of the case and law, allowing them to provide insights into the likely outcomes of the case. This informed perspective can help guide the parties toward a resolution, even if it’s not explicitly stated.” As far as how the mediation itself will begin, McKenzie explains that “after the initial session, the parties typically move to separate rooms to caucus. The mediator will shuttle between rooms, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each party’s case, and conveying offers or counteroffers in an effort to reach a middle ground.” (link)

Ovies + Giglio’s Joe Ovies offers his opinion on ESPN/SEC Network host Paul Finebaum’s opinion that Florida State will finish the upcoming football season unranked. Finebaum: “I think they used up too many tears crying about not getting in the playoffs, so that may slow them down a little bit this year.” Ovies: “This is always going to be the issue for how fans, coaches, administrators interpret what ESPN is doing with the ACC. And it all comes down to the fact that the face of the SEC Network, Paul Finebaum, who's also positioned as a college football insider/analyst, goes out of his way to make fun of the top teams in other leagues, specifically the ACC, because he knows that it gets rise out of people.” (link)

Vanderbilt Senior Assoc. AD for Fan Experience and Sales Lauren Belisle sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on personal and professional change management, including when taking a new professional opportunity. Belisle also shares insight on how Vanderbilt evaluated the fan experience and implemented new procedures in a post-pandemic events landscape, discusses the issue of resource allocation during major facilities projects; and reflects on how the institution implemented critical feedback during a recent brand refresh. Earlier in her career, Belisle explains she approached career opportunities based on “what seemed fun” and viewed potential roles in a way that was “very narrow in scope. … Now as I’ve grown in my career it’s become more so the people that I would work for and with…[as well as] where the institution is at in their growth, too. What appealed to me about the job at Vanderbilt where I’m at now is they were at this incredible moment of change. And not every place has an appetite for change. And so that was incredibly appealing and seemed like I could make a difference there.” On embracing a growth mindset: “I want to make sure that everything that I’m doing is for the betterment of the place that I’m working, so if I need to change the way I'm leading somebody or adapt and change how we're getting to the end result, I'm seeking feedback certainly for my direct supervisor, but also from my peer leadership group in the athletics department, people who report into me and their teams.” More on ADU. House case plaintiff lawyers pushed back on filings from last week that asked for reconsiderations of the settlement. Per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz from the plaintiff lawyers: “Objectors’ attempt to argue that this landmark settlement fails to satisfy the preliminary approval test is frivolous. The relief is comparable to what class members might achieve at trial, but only after more years of litigation facing an uncertain outcome. [...] These objections are a thinly veiled and last ditch effort to get a seat at the table. They are based on voodoo economics and damage numbers and flat out misstatements of the settlement and the negotiation history. A shameful effort to stand in the way of a [$]20 billion plus change in college athletics.” Also: “‘The unique experience of … counsel in negotiating revenue sharing systems for professional athletes provided Class Counsel with special expertise to negotiate the injunctive relief settlement here,’ the plaintiffs wrote. Lawyers for the set of settlement opponents who raised questions about the value of the proposed deal ‘do not have any such experience, which limits their ability to assess the value of the injunctive relief settlement terms.’” More, including a carve out for the separate lawsuit concerning Ivy League schools’ refusal to award athletic scholarships. NJ.com’s Steve Politi dives into the exit of Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs: “Hobbs, multiple sources told NJ Advance Media, was part of a regular staff meeting just on Wednesday and showed no signs that anything was amiss. The news that he was stepping aside stunned even some high-level people in the athletic department. [...] …he got the unceremonial Friday afternoon news dump treatment, while Rutgers employees were told not to reach out to Hobbs immediately after the news went public. There is no indication that Hobbs will stick around in an advisory role as [Interim AD Ryan] Pisarri, his loyal lieutenant, tries to lead the department through this turbulent time. [...] We don’t have the answers. Rutgers saw the leader of its athletics department step aside on Friday afternoon just weeks before the biggest season in recent history, and as everyone inside and outside of Piscataway processed the news, they were all left with the same question. So what really happened?” (link)

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” That’s Louisiana AD Bryan Maggard on how he & his team are attacking the future given the potential House settlement. Maggard specifically points to diamond sports as a key differentiator: “Currently working with campus leadership right now to see what we can do to go beyond that 11.7 for baseball and 12 for softball. Those talks are ongoing, but our campus leadership understands the importance and value of our diamond sports.” Maggard also notes the push to have all fans sign up for a $10 per month donation to the Krewe Allons collective, which along with continued sport-specific fundraising, should allow for recruiting & retention budgets. Big picture on House: “That is absolutely pay for play. It’s intended to be that. Schools will have the opportunity to opt into that. We won’t. We don’t have an extra $20 million. I don’t know any other Group of Five [program] that does, but we know the power 4 programs will. My counterparts in those programs, many of them are scratching their heads right now, because they don’t have an extra $20 million.” (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle on the potential of a GM-type role to oversee cap management: “If it’s at $21 million to $22 million [annual shared revenue], you have to have somebody who’s going to manage that cap for you at the same time. If a professional team misses on a player, it really impacts their cap for future years. And so, we’re going to have to start to think that way. We’ve looked at, do we need to bring somebody in that can help us manage those caps? Is it different people for different sports? And then, more importantly, we want to be very strategic and analytical when we assign those dollar values, when we make those commitments to those kids where we’re different than the professional level. It’s not just how many baskets do they make, right. Are you going to class? Are you going to graduate? Those things all come into play too. Those are things we ought to measure.” On how revenue sharing impacts the potential renovations to Williams Arena: “We’re not tearing down Williams right now. We still need to gather information. … I do think there’s things we can do to make the experience better for our fans and for our student-athletes. But with the revenue share, we’ve got to focus on some other things first.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey is happy in his current job, explaining after his name was floated in the Houston AD search: “My heart’s here. I love this place, I love this community, I love this state and maybe more importantly, I love our people. When something like that happens, and it happens quite a bit in our industry and there’s a lot of change, it’s humbling to have your name out there. But my feet were here and my heart is here. … I believe in what we’re building. I believe it, I’m going to sign my name on the dotted line, I’ve already committed. If I felt like we had reached our ceiling, if I felt there wasn’t more to be had for our team and for our community and what Bronco Nation means to us, maybe that’s a different decision. But I’m bullish on our future, I’m bullish on who we are today and who we’re going to be tomorrow.” More on his commitment and vision for the Broncos. (link)

James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis pens a guest post for Extra Points breaking down how the U.S. Department of Labor’s new overtime rules will impact athletic departments and explains several key positions will be impacted, including assistant coaches, trainers, business office staff, facilities staff and others. Davis also points out that the new rule will impact departments of all sizes, but “for smaller schools with limited resources, the impact of the DOL overtime rules could be larger than the impact of the House settlement.” To maintain compliance with the new rules, Davis recommends analyzing the department’s current workforce, adopting budget-neutral strategies, addressing salary compression and outsourcing when appropriate. On salary compression: “If entry-level employees are raised to the new minimum, their salaries could become similar to those of their supervisors in a mid-level pay grade — potentially causing a domino effect throughout the department. In the first round of increases, we have seen that the most compression occurs in the $50,000-$80,000 range. Addressing this compression will require careful planning to maintain equity and morale, and it will have an exponential impact on budgets. We expect a minimum 20-30% budget impact for the mid-level pay grade adjustments, but the impact could vary depending on the department’s staffing mix and the institution’s salary structure.” Davis also suggests converting employees to a lower hourly rate: “Consider evaluating what an hourly rate would be for a position based on anticipated hours worked. Then pay a reduced hourly rate so when overtime is worked, it remains budget neutral. Be warned that employees will likely not be receptive to this option since they will not receive any of the intended benefits of this rule.” More. (link)

Purdue Executive Senior Assoc. AD/AVP for Development Tim House sits down with CSA/Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on his journey as a leader, including how he learned to embrace a "We, not Me" mindset despite the tendency for development and fundraising professionals to focus on their own metrics. House also talks about the need to balance passion with expertise, the value of slowing down as a key to long-term success and how he pivoted early in his career after a colleague advised him to focus more energy on "thinking about other people" as a manager. House: "To have the first person I ever managed tell me, 'Hey man, you stink at this part of the job, you better think about this’ [was invaluable].” From there, House developed a strategy for building cultural success within his unit while simultaneously creating checks and balances for himself as a leader and recalls advice he received from former Virginia AD Craig Littlepage: “If you make it about everybody else, they’re going to take care of you. … Be someone people want to help.” Lots more on Connect. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority on Thursday approved an almost $2.4M payout to UNLV tied to revenue shortfall during the 2023 football season. (link) The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers: “As laid out by Senate Bill 1 in 2016, which earmarked $750M in public funding for the construction of the $2M Allegiant Stadium, UNLV is eligible for up to $3.5M in compensation for stadium net income that fails to meet $5M annually. The revenue shortfall payments are available for the first 10 years UNLV plays in Allegiant Stadium. … Last year, UNLV football games at Allegiant Stadium generated just over $2.6M in revenue, so when subtracted from the $5M base year amount from Sam Boyd, the $2.4M payout amount was determined.” (link)
