Houston has narrowed its AD search down to two finalists in New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez and Tennessee Deputy AD for Championship Resources/CRO Ryan Alpert, according to PaperCity’s Chris Baldwin, who adds: “UH chancellor Renu Khator and Board of Regents Chairman Tilman Fertitta want to have the AD decision made by next week with a Board of Regents meeting already scheduled for the week at Fertitta’s Post Oak Hotel.” Also from Baldwin: “The source close to UH leadership tells PaperCity that there was a final five that is now down to Nuñez and Alpert. While a long roll call of names and ‘candidates’ have been thrown out by other media outlets — including former West Virginia AD and longtime sports executive Oliver Luck, who never was involved in this search — the source close to UH’s decision makers say many of those names were never under consideration.” Per the source: “Two (of the so-called candidates) I’ve never heard of. And one we’re not interviewing.” (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle tells the Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder that the Big Ten’s media revenue increase has been overstated in media reports. “If it was $80M to $100M a year, I would not have gray hair. Well, that is not accurate at all. There will be an increase, but I can tell you with confidence, it’s not $80M to $100M.” Coyle also says the Gophers’ 2020 decision to eliminate men’s tennis, gymnastics and indoor track and field will help the department avoid cutting more sports in the near future. “I felt like that put Minnesota in a very good competitive posture in the Big Ten. If you go back to that point in time, we had the fourth-highest number of sports (and) the eighth-ranked budget in the (14-team) Big Ten. Well, as you look at today, I shared with the [Board of] Regents last month, with 18 members, our budget is 14th in the Big Ten. Our sport offerings are around the middle of the Big Ten Conference right now, so I feel like that’s a good space to be in for us.” Moving forward, Coyle remarks: “I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring. … So, we’ll continue to look at all options as we move forward. But right now, [cutting] sports has not been part of that conversation.” Facilities-wise, Coyle says the Gophers are still gathering info on what comes next for the 96-year-old Williams Arena. “When we played UConn last year in women’s basketball, when we played Iowa in women’s basketball, the building was sold out, right? And nobody complained about the Barn, right? If we win, if we have success; we give people a reason to come to the building and be a part of that. Obviously, we had Paige (Bueckers) and Caitlin (Clark), but if we continue to have success with both our basketball programs, I feel like we’re going to have people (who) will be there.” (link)

Baylor AD Mack Rhodes on recruiting momentum for his football program & its NIL strategy on the heels of football coaches wearing “We Pay Players” shirts to open preseason camp: “We’ve found a way to be really competitive [with NIL] and do it really well and extremely thoughtfully. Now we’re getting young people to visit our campus; Dave [Aranda], the football staff and our football administration do such a great job with them. I’m really proud of the momentum and the excitement they’ve created.” Speaking of Aranda, his take: “I’ve got a bunch of negative reviews on [the t-shirts] and positive ones too. I think [we have to embrace] putting it out there like that and not be ashamed or bashful about what it takes to win. You make that statement because we weren’t in the game, and now we’re saying we’re in it, and I think a lot of people needed to hear that.” (link)

The Brandr Group’s Athlete Relations & Activations Director Ashley Kern and VP for School & Athlete Operations Rachel Maruno sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss TBG’s position within the NIL landscape as a full-service NIL agency. Kern and Maruno share TBG’s origin story within professional sports and how the organization has shifted to address the specific needs of college athletic departments and student-athletes in an effort to provide equitable access to licensed marks. On that front, Kerns tells Brown: “We’re here to provide stability to a world that has been very volatile. We’re here to work very closely with the universities to make sure their student-athletes are being treated fairly and that we’re helping brands visualize new and creative ways to utilize student-athletes in their programming. … As we plan for the future, we have to be nimble. We have to continue to listen to student-athletes and to university partners and then be flexible in how we approach [as] a part of the team because we know it is not just The Brandr Group. It’s The Brandr Group and the university, in some places the collectives. There’s a lot of different people that are all working in the same lane.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

ESPN and Genius Sports have inked a new long-term deal to “transform ESPN’s data-driven storytelling for NCAA sports and enhance broadcasts for the NBA and WNBA. As part of the deal, ESPN will “expand its college sports coverage with real-time team and player stats from Genius Sports.” Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke: “Following on from our work with ESPN to power the first fully branded sports broadcast with Marvel and immersive March Madness augmented megacasts, we are delighted to strike a major expansion with ESPN. As well as powering crucial NBA and WNBA insights, ESPN can utilize Genius Sports technology to power all of its NCAA data needs including next generation context experiences through our new GeniusIQ technology.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand and Matt Belloni sit down for a discussion about several sports broadcast topics, including Warner Bros. Discovery’s $9.1B write-down, and Belloni observes that WBD has been able to leverage its NBA deal to keep its carriage price high with cable companies. “If I’m controlling one of these companies, say Comcast or Charter or any one of these cable or multi-video companies, I would go back to Turner and be like, ‘Guys, this number has got to come down. You always justified this price based on NBA. You no longer have NBA. We're going to cut that price in half.’ And if that happens, all hell breaks loose at Warner Discovery because 100% of their EBITDA, of their profit, has been coming from these cable networks.” Ourand argues that it’s more complicated than that for distributors: “If you want to dump the Turner networks, you have to go without March Madness in the month of March and you're going to have to go without the baseball playoffs in the month of October. They are going to have a couple of College Football Playoff games as well. There are some big-time sports that are still on the dial that are going to make it…more of a risk to play hardball in those cases.” Belloni: “Yeah, they have to be prepared to walk away. … The question is whether we have reached the point in the evolution of the TV business where the cable carriers are willing to walk away from the channels and focus on, in Comcast’s case, on their broadband business and on their direct-to-consumer business via Peacock. … Warner clearly believes that these companies are not willing to walk away and if they're not then it just becomes a matter of negotiation to get to the number that they're going to pay, but if they are willing to walk away then that is a potential dagger to this company.” Lots more. Group of 5 commissioners will meet in Dallas next week to discuss some of the most urgent issues facing their membership, including the “possibility of a reshaped postseason incorporating the bowl system, an arrangement that may generate additional television dollars and provide a secondary championship for those G5 teams not competing in the CFP,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “We are open to all of that. That would be really interesting and have some value. What if it’s like an NIT of football?” Nevarez is quick to point out that the G5 is not relinquishing its spot in the College Football Playoff. “We’re not touching that.” Nevarez also reveals that during CFP negotiations in February and March, power conference leaders “threatened” to remove the G5’s automatic bid, but, “to their credit, it never came off the table.” Former AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco adds: “If we had lost access, we would have taken some kind of action. That would have been ruinous for us.” With no format finalized for the final six years of the CFP contract, Dellenger emphasizes the need for G5 teams to win over the next two seasons. Aresco: “I hear it in the [CFP commissioners] room. You don’t really belong! We’re giving you the spot that could have gone to a higher-ranked team!’” More from Dellenger. (link)

Notre Dame has suspended its men’s swimming program for a minimum of one year following an investigation into misconduct within the team. Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua: “The external review confirmed and expanded on our initial concerns about a deeply embedded team culture dismissive of Notre Dame’s standards for student-athletes, including our expectation that they treat one another with dignity and respect. This independent, external review also documented numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions despite clear and recurrent training provided to all our student-athletes by our Athletics Compliance staff about those rules. … We profoundly regret that the small number of team members who did not participate in the conduct, and those who were planning on joining the team this fall, will also suffer the consequences of this decision. We deeply value our responsibilities as educators and our commitment to our student-athletes, and will work with other University offices as appropriate to provide support to those affected by our decision.” Bevacqua goes on to note the “coaching staff participated in and fully cooperated with all aspects of the external review. The review found that the staff was not aware of gambling or the scope and extent of other troubling behaviors because team members effectively concealed such behaviors from the coaches and staff through concerted efforts. According to the review, when the staff became aware of certain isolated incidents of unacceptable conduct, they treated them seriously and professionally.” Full statement. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports the Notre Dame men’s swimming team “effectively created its own sports book for the purpose of wagering on their swimming performances, sources say. A majority of the returning 2024–25 team is believed to have placed bets. ‘Over/under’ lines were established for a swimmer’s times in certain races, with wagers being placed on the outcomes. There are no known gambling companies that take wagers or produce betting lines on college swimming. … Some Fighting Irish swimmers also placed wagers on other sports and involving other schools, sources said, such as the NCAA basketball tournaments.” Fighting Irish HC Chris Lindauer and his staff were not disciplined, and Lindauer says: “While it has been a difficult few months, I am confident that Notre Dame took the correct steps to ensure this misconduct does not continue. Our team culture is my utmost priority, and I am committed to improving upon the student-athlete experience both in and out of the pool. I am hopeful we will emerge from this situation stronger than ever. I remain committed to the women’s swimming and diving program and the men’s diving program at Notre Dame, and I am looking forward to working with them this season to accomplish our goals and reach new heights.” (link)

Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich analyzes the recent objections to the House settlement and notes that the objection filed by six current and former rowing student-athletes (the “crew objection”) “came out of nowhere.” Ehrlich: “I have not seen any lawsuit filed or even joined by the athletes involved in [the crew] objection. And perhaps more notably, I also [haven’t] seen anything filed against the NCAA by the two law firms representing those crew athletes, San Francisco-based Conrad Metlinzky Kane and Chicago-based MoloLamken. If you are inclined to cynicism, you may think that the Choh and Fontenot objections are rooted in some degree of selfishness: they want their individual lawsuits to continue.” Meanwhile, Ehrlich points out that MoloLamken…represented seven players who filed a motion objecting to the [NFL’s CTE] settlement on a variety of grounds—including the fact that the settlement gave the NFL “a near-absolute release” from any future claims. This objection was successful.” Ehrlich goes on to point out that the crew objectors argue the House settlement relies on the assumption that women’s sports are destined to bring in less money, and as such that their athletes inherently have less NIL value. “I think that could strike a chord with many…including perhaps the female judge who will be determining the fairness of the settlement agreement. … Taking these points together, I think there’s a possibility that Judge Wilken finds that the settlement is, in fact, an unjustified end-around to collective bargaining, and finds that the representation of the plaintiff class is too skewed towards compensating male athletes at the expense of the women, or perhaps that the caps unjustifiably restrict women to the favor of the men.” More. Florida’s NIL negotiations with now-Georgia QB Jaden Rashada “started with a covert recruiting meeting with a big-time booster under the guise of a Lamborghini dropoff,” according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, who cites Rashada’s updated federal lawsuit against Gators HC Billy Napier, prominent UF supporter Hugh Hathcock and former staffer Marcus Castro-Walker. From the amended complaint: “Upon entering the meeting room, Castro-Walker informed Jaden’s father, Harlen, that one of UF’s biggest boosters was there that day and that he wanted to speak with Jaden. Castro-Walker explained that Hathcock was there to drop off his Lamborghini for a photo shoot, but ‘you didn’t see him,’ acknowledging the forbidden yet undeniable affiliation between Hathcock and UF’s football program.” Hathcock entered through a back door, then “bragged that he was a big financial supporter of UF’s football program, and assured Jaden that UF’s football program was going to achieve much success under Coach Napier.” Attorneys for Napier have denied any wrongdoing on Napier’s part, but the suit claims that Hathcock’s talks with Rashada’s agents “made clear that his ability to fund lucrative NIL deals was the means to Napier’s recruiting end.” The complaint also called it “implausible” that Hathcock would offer to pay Rashada instead of other blue-chip passers without Napier’s instructions. The amended complaint includes a new count of civil conspiracy to coerce. The other seven counts remain the same; they’re related to fraud, negligence and interfering with contracts. (link)

+ ESPN has parted ways with Sunday NFL Countdown host Samantha Ponder and former Baylor QB/Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III in a pair of cost-cutting moves, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who notes: ”Ponder was entering the final season of a three-year deal worth more than $3M, sources briefed on her contract said. She only worked in the prestigious role of Sunday NFL Countdown host and was basically off for the rest of the year. ESPN generally reserves these types of schedules for the Joe Bucks, Troy Aikmans and Peyton Mannings of its world. NFL Live host Laura Rutledge and Get Up host Mike Greenberg are potential replacements for Ponder. The buyouts of Ponder and Griffin are the only moves ESPN is making at the moment, but it could choose to shed more salary by the end of September.” (link)

Liberty Mutual has filed suit against former Kentucky Swimming & Diving HC Lars Jorgensen and the plaintiffs suing him for sexual abuse, seeking a declaratory judgment that the personal liability portion of his insurance policies does not apply in this case, according to LEO Weekly’s Tim Sullivan, who adds: “In a July 2 letter, Liberty ‘denied any obligation to defend or indemnify Jorgensen in the underlying lawsuit,’ saying policy ‘exclusions for expected injury bar coverage for any alleged ‘bodily injury.’ Jorgensen missed the July 26 deadline for a response to the lawsuit brought by former UK swimmers and coaches. He is now represented by a new lawyer, Anthony Pernice, and the parties have agreed to allow him until Aug. 23 to respond.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd checks in with some of college football’s super duper seniors – players who are entering their sixth, seventh and, in one case, ninth year. Oklahoma State QB Alan Bowman, whose career began six seasons ago at Texas Tech, views his extended eligibility due to COVID and the transfer portal as a gift. “Even to be here [at Big 12 Media Days in Las Vegas] is awesome. Fly on a private jet with Coach [Mike] Gundy and stay at the Bellagio. What are we doing?" Or, as he puts it to seventh-year Utah QB Cam Rising: "What else would we be doing, selling insurance?" For his part, Rising, who has dealt with a multitude of injuries throughout his career, says the ability to keep playing “got me out of the ‘victim’ mindset.” Meanwhile, Dodd notes that Miami (FL) TE Cam McCormick “has been around for eight versions of the iPhone since enrolling at Oregon in 2016.” The players’ careers also coincide with the most lucrative period for college athletes in history, to the point that Rising has his choice of free cars between the Utes’ NIL deal with Dodge and his own partnership with Toyota. Meanwhile, Bowman is thinking of turning his handlebar mustache into an NIL opportunity. "And it's friggin' orange. We're the Cowboys. Why not?" (link)
