Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs has resigned from his position effective immediately and will be replaced on an interim basis by Scarlet Knights Deputy AD for Competitive Excellence/Chief of Staff Ryan Pissari. Hobbs announced his decision in an email to the athletic department today: “Earlier this morning, I shared with [Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway] that I am departing my position as Athletic Director at Rutgers University. I truly believe we are writing the greatest chapter in Rutgers history and I am confident that you will continue to do so. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with you. I look forward to enjoying all your success this season and in the years ahead.” (link); According to NJ.com, Hobbs informed Holloway that “after meeting with my cardiac team this week and having just been apprised of the results of my latest round of testing, it is clear that I can not continue to serve as Athletic Director given the requirements of the position.” We extend our best wishes to Hobbs for a full and speedy recovery. Illinois Executive Senior Assoc. AD/COO Roger Denny has withdrawn from the Missouri State AD search after partaking in interviews and a public forum in Springfield earlier this week. MSU EVP/AD Search Committee Chair Brent Dunn tells the Springfield Daily Citizen’s Joe Hadsall Denny’s decision was “nothing negative, just a personal family situation.” Dunn states MSU will decide on potentially bringing in a fourth or fifth candidate after this round of on-campus interviews concludes early next week, adding: “Everything is possible and on the table. We’ll get through this wave, then in discussions with President Williams, make any decisions after that.” (link); Our thoughts are with MSU President Biff Williams and his family after he was taken to the hospital yesterday. VCU AD Ed McLaughlin joins D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NACDA Convention to discuss the House Settlement, Title IX and the impact on Division I-AAA institutions. McLaughlin also shares updates on upcoming facility projects as he starts his 13th year leading the Rams. McLaughlin explains that for DI-AAA departments, access to championships is top-of-mind. “You have to have access to championships, give kids the ability to compete. But for me, beyond that it's like the kids don't want to be employees. They talk about that all time that they don’t want to be employees. … I think the biggest concern from a I-AAA level is not losing the access to college through sport right. I think the biggest question is will schools at the I-AAA level have to cut some sports, which none of us want to do. It’s a terrible thing to take that away, but we can't lose perspective that there are lot of kids in this country who have the ability to go to college because the sport they play – either financially it helps them, it helps them get into college, gives them an opportunity they wouldn't have to create generational change for their families. We don't have all the resources that other schools do, but we still have the ability to give kids a great experience and to be a vehicle for kids to get a college education. If we can't remember that, then what are we doing?” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport has released its annual Women in College Coaching Report Card (WCCRC) in collaboration with WeCOACH. The report documents the percentage of women in all coaching positions for women’s teams within DI conferences and finds: “Based on the numbers, we are confident that the new era of STEADY INCLINE for intercollegiate Division I women sport coaches at the most visible, powerful institutions is firmly in place.” Specifically, the report indicates that “the percentage of women head coaches of all NCAA DI women’s teams increased (45.3%) for the seventh year in row and for the [tenth] year in a row in the seven select conferences (47.4%; AAC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC, Big East), marking a decade of improvement.” Additionally, the percentage of women HCs for the selected seven conferences marked the “second greatest increase (1.4%), building off momentum from the largest gain to date in the 2022-2023 Report Card (2.3% increase).” The percentage of women head coaches for all DI leagues increased by the largest margin (1.9%) in the history of the WCCRC, and the percentage of women HCs hired per year has more than doubled (51.9%) since the WCCRC’s launch in 2013. The 2023-2024 academic year also marked the highest number of women coaches of color in the history of the report card at 308. Full report. (link)

USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, in response to Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders’ “urging,” reexamined records and “sought further information from officials who looked into the case involving his son, Shilo, who filed for bankruptcy last October with more than $11M in debt. As a result, USA Today Sports found that at least five agencies or institutions with access to witnesses and evidence in the 2015 case made conclusions about it – Dallas police, Shilo’s school, an insurance company, Texas child protective services and a civil court in Dallas. None of them favored Shilo Sanders. … Four of those five official inquiries instead favored John Darjean, the school security guard who claimed he suffered permanent and severe spinal and nerve injuries after Shilo allegedly assaulted him in 2015, when Shilo was a 15-year-old ninth grader at FOCUS Academies in Dallas. The other of those five investigations initially sided with Shilo but then obtained information that forced it to reverse its conclusion and instead ruled that fault was ‘unable to be determined.’” More from Schrotenboer on what each agency or institution found. Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy had a message for his players heading into camp: "The good news is the next five months, we can just play football. That's what I told the players. There's no negotiations now. The Portal's over. All the negotiations are history. Now, we're playing football. Just coaching and playing football. … The business-side of what we do now is, we have to have those conversations with them. Tell your agent to quit calling us and asking us for more money. It's non-negotiable now. It can start again in December. So, now we're able to direct ourselves just to football and that part is fun. Because there's been so much other stuff that's going on it's been hard to really focus on football." Gundy also notes that “everybody is waiting to see if [U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken] signs off on this settlement. "Then, we'll have parameters and then we can start attacking how you distribute $20 million amongst 105 people. So it's very interesting to even think about that, almost unfathomable. That part is intriguing and somewhat fun to think of different ways you can do it." (link)

The SEC has a proposed agreement with the city of Hoover that would extend the SEC Baseball Tournament at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium for at least four more years through 2028. Hoover Parks and Rec Director Erin Colbaugh says the proposal also provides for two additional one-year options in 2029 and 2030 and notes that part of the agreement calls for Hoover to make certain improvements to the stadium in time for the next tournament in May 2025. The city has approved $11M in upgrades that will include a 4,250-square-foot club suite addition down the third base side on the concourse level and the replacement of the chairback seating in the lower bowl with new chairback seating. Houston has made available a refrigerated trailer in which football players can seek refuge and recover from the balmy summer weather. Dubbed “Club Ice,” the trailer is like “when you’re at Walmart and in the ice cream aisle. You’re just standing there with the door open on a hot summer day,” according to tight end Jayden York. Cougars HC Willie Fritz says the team purposely holds its practices early in the morning to beat the heat. “It’s better to come out and get started in the morning. I had never done it until I was at my previous stop. I love it, and I’ll never go back to practicing in the afternoon again.” As of now, UH has a one-month contract to use Club Ice, although there are talks to use it longer. (link)

U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett on Friday granted FuboTV’s motion for a preliminary injunction to bar Disney, ESPN, Fox, Warner Brothers Discovery and Hulu from moving forward with Venu. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the “defendants can, and almost certainly will, appeal Garnett’s ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The ruling also doesn’t end the case at the trial court level. Fubo sued in April and the litigation in the Southern District of New York could remain in court for many months, if not years.” McCann also explains that “by granting Fubo’s motion, Garnett has dispatched Venu Sports to the penalty box for the foreseeable future. Absent a successful appeal, early resolution to the case or an out-of-court settlement, the injunction will remain in place at least until a trial, which likely won’t occur until 2025 or later. It’s possible the companies behind Venu Sports might view the wait as incompatible with their business goals and nix the platform altogether. … In an appeal, the Second Circuit would review Garnett’s decision to grant Fubo a preliminary injunction under the abuse of discretion standard. The judge’s ruling would be sustained so long as it falls within a range of permissible decisions. The defendants would argue Garnett committed an error of law, such as she applied the wrong standard or incorrectly applied the right standard, or fumbled the findings of fact.” (link)

Houston has narrowed its AD search down to two finalists in New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez and Tennessee Deputy AD for Championship Resources/CRO Ryan Alpert, according to PaperCity’s Chris Baldwin, who adds: “UH chancellor Renu Khator and Board of Regents Chairman Tilman Fertitta want to have the AD decision made by next week with a Board of Regents meeting already scheduled for the week at Fertitta’s Post Oak Hotel.” Also from Baldwin: “The source close to UH leadership tells PaperCity that there was a final five that is now down to Nuñez and Alpert. While a long roll call of names and ‘candidates’ have been thrown out by other media outlets — including former West Virginia AD and longtime sports executive Oliver Luck, who never was involved in this search — the source close to UH’s decision makers say many of those names were never under consideration.” Per the source: “Two (of the so-called candidates) I’ve never heard of. And one we’re not interviewing.” (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle tells the Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder that the Big Ten’s media revenue increase has been overstated in media reports. “If it was $80M to $100M a year, I would not have gray hair. Well, that is not accurate at all. There will be an increase, but I can tell you with confidence, it’s not $80M to $100M.” Coyle also says the Gophers’ 2020 decision to eliminate men’s tennis, gymnastics and indoor track and field will help the department avoid cutting more sports in the near future. “I felt like that put Minnesota in a very good competitive posture in the Big Ten. If you go back to that point in time, we had the fourth-highest number of sports (and) the eighth-ranked budget in the (14-team) Big Ten. Well, as you look at today, I shared with the [Board of] Regents last month, with 18 members, our budget is 14th in the Big Ten. Our sport offerings are around the middle of the Big Ten Conference right now, so I feel like that’s a good space to be in for us.” Moving forward, Coyle remarks: “I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring. … So, we’ll continue to look at all options as we move forward. But right now, [cutting] sports has not been part of that conversation.” Facilities-wise, Coyle says the Gophers are still gathering info on what comes next for the 96-year-old Williams Arena. “When we played UConn last year in women’s basketball, when we played Iowa in women’s basketball, the building was sold out, right? And nobody complained about the Barn, right? If we win, if we have success; we give people a reason to come to the building and be a part of that. Obviously, we had Paige (Bueckers) and Caitlin (Clark), but if we continue to have success with both our basketball programs, I feel like we’re going to have people (who) will be there.” (link)

Baylor AD Mack Rhodes on recruiting momentum for his football program & its NIL strategy on the heels of football coaches wearing “We Pay Players” shirts to open preseason camp: “We’ve found a way to be really competitive [with NIL] and do it really well and extremely thoughtfully. Now we’re getting young people to visit our campus; Dave [Aranda], the football staff and our football administration do such a great job with them. I’m really proud of the momentum and the excitement they’ve created.” Speaking of Aranda, his take: “I’ve got a bunch of negative reviews on [the t-shirts] and positive ones too. I think [we have to embrace] putting it out there like that and not be ashamed or bashful about what it takes to win. You make that statement because we weren’t in the game, and now we’re saying we’re in it, and I think a lot of people needed to hear that.” (link)

The Brandr Group’s Athlete Relations & Activations Director Ashley Kern and VP for School & Athlete Operations Rachel Maruno sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss TBG’s position within the NIL landscape as a full-service NIL agency. Kern and Maruno share TBG’s origin story within professional sports and how the organization has shifted to address the specific needs of college athletic departments and student-athletes in an effort to provide equitable access to licensed marks. On that front, Kerns tells Brown: “We’re here to provide stability to a world that has been very volatile. We’re here to work very closely with the universities to make sure their student-athletes are being treated fairly and that we’re helping brands visualize new and creative ways to utilize student-athletes in their programming. … As we plan for the future, we have to be nimble. We have to continue to listen to student-athletes and to university partners and then be flexible in how we approach [as] a part of the team because we know it is not just The Brandr Group. It’s The Brandr Group and the university, in some places the collectives. There’s a lot of different people that are all working in the same lane.” Full conversation on ADU. (link)

ESPN and Genius Sports have inked a new long-term deal to “transform ESPN’s data-driven storytelling for NCAA sports and enhance broadcasts for the NBA and WNBA. As part of the deal, ESPN will “expand its college sports coverage with real-time team and player stats from Genius Sports.” Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke: “Following on from our work with ESPN to power the first fully branded sports broadcast with Marvel and immersive March Madness augmented megacasts, we are delighted to strike a major expansion with ESPN. As well as powering crucial NBA and WNBA insights, ESPN can utilize Genius Sports technology to power all of its NCAA data needs including next generation context experiences through our new GeniusIQ technology.” (link)

Puck’s John Ourand and Matt Belloni sit down for a discussion about several sports broadcast topics, including Warner Bros. Discovery’s $9.1B write-down, and Belloni observes that WBD has been able to leverage its NBA deal to keep its carriage price high with cable companies. “If I’m controlling one of these companies, say Comcast or Charter or any one of these cable or multi-video companies, I would go back to Turner and be like, ‘Guys, this number has got to come down. You always justified this price based on NBA. You no longer have NBA. We're going to cut that price in half.’ And if that happens, all hell breaks loose at Warner Discovery because 100% of their EBITDA, of their profit, has been coming from these cable networks.” Ourand argues that it’s more complicated than that for distributors: “If you want to dump the Turner networks, you have to go without March Madness in the month of March and you're going to have to go without the baseball playoffs in the month of October. They are going to have a couple of College Football Playoff games as well. There are some big-time sports that are still on the dial that are going to make it…more of a risk to play hardball in those cases.” Belloni: “Yeah, they have to be prepared to walk away. … The question is whether we have reached the point in the evolution of the TV business where the cable carriers are willing to walk away from the channels and focus on, in Comcast’s case, on their broadband business and on their direct-to-consumer business via Peacock. … Warner clearly believes that these companies are not willing to walk away and if they're not then it just becomes a matter of negotiation to get to the number that they're going to pay, but if they are willing to walk away then that is a potential dagger to this company.” Lots more.
