The NCAA on Tuesday circulated a memo about its rules regarding men’s basketball MTEs “that appears to implicitly address—if not cast doubt upon—the new Players Era Festival in Las Vegas,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who adds that in the two-page FAQ the NCAA “reiterated that its bylaws make it ‘impermissible’ for athletes to receive NIL money in exchange for participating in an MTE, even if that money is first routed through a collective. [Co-organizer] EverWonder [Studio], which previously has said it’s been working with the NCAA, has sought to distinguish the money it is paying to collectives as being tied to athlete ‘NIL opportunities’ with ‘sponsors outside of competition.’” Libit goes on to note that “according to portions of its ‘talent provider and management’ agreements reviewed by Sportico, EverWonder has agreed to three-year deals that commit the studio and its unnamed ‘partners’ to paying $3M through 2026. Furthermore, the agreements stipulate that EverWonder is supposed to transfer the money to the collectives within 15 days of the event taking place. If EverWonder determines that it is ‘unable to operate any or all of the 2024 event, the 2025 event, or the 2026 event,’ it can pay each collective a termination fee of $250K. … Given that most MTE’s typically bring in $1M to $3M of revenue, the prevailing question, beyond Players Era’s NCAA permissibility, is its financial viability. Without tapping some rich, yet-undiscovered revenue stream, it would seem destined to end its first year with a sizable seven-figure deficit.” (link)

Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley acknowledges the possibility that first-round, on-campus College Football Playoff games could increase the public’s appetite for more games on campus. “I don’t think the fate of the free world is hanging on it, but it’s certainly important to all of us involved in postseason college football. It’s going to be a learning experience, finding out what works and doesn’t work, how the schools react, how the fans react. We’re a little on edge this year, but that’s a good thing. It’s vital for us to put our best foot forward.” Hundley says 99% of the tickets the bowl is responsible for selling have sold and notes: “In the past, our emphasis has been on tourism and drawing the most number of visiting fans, which it still is. We’re working very hard to make the city interesting during their time here. But we’re also needing more local support, and we’ve been saying so for the past year. The quickest way to screw this up would be to not sell tickets. … We’ve been given no indication that we won’t be part of the playoffs going forward. But it’s up to us to give them every reason to make sure they want us involved. That’s why having less than a full stadium is not an option.” (link)

Portland State is looking to play one football game a year at Providence Park, the Vikings’ former home and the current home of the MLS’ Portland Timbers. JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher notes that “administrators and coaches on the Park Blocks have vented about how Peregrine Sports LLC, the parent company of the Timbers, pushed them out,” and PSU HC Bruce Barnum once told Canzano: “We kept paying the money. It went up and up and up and up.” The Vikings, Canzano continues, “were told they couldn’t use the visiting locker room. Or store football equipment at the stadium the night before the game.” Former AD Val Cleary told Canzano in 2022: “The logistics became a nightmare.” Now, President Ann Cudd tells Canzano: “We’re trying to bring a game a year to Providence Park. It will be on us to fill the stadium, get the right opponent, get our fans there. I hope we can do it.” Canzano notes the last game the team played at Providence Park in 2018 drew just 4,375 fans. “So the key here is finding an opponent or promotion that will help fill the 30,000-seat downtown Portland venue. How about a game against Oregon State or even Washington State? Split the gate? Allow the Beavers or Cougars to generate a little revenue, showcase in Oregon’s largest market, and position the matchup as a very winnable early-season, non-conference road game? Just thinking out loud here. … It’s going to take a solid bit of strategy to make this a success.” (link)

Racers AD Nico Yantko: "Words cannot describe how big of an impact that this transformational investment from the Dill Family will have on Racer Athletics and we cannot thank them enough for believing in our plan and for their willingness to support our department. We are excited for what this gift will allow us to do to further advance Murray State Athletics and cannot wait to share our plans for future success in the coming months.” (link)

The Big Ten Network increased corporate sponsorship sales from $7M to $15M after bringing those efforts in-house last year, and BTN President Francois McGillicuddy tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “We are going to, very quickly here, surpass $20M.” Portnoy notes the network has seen “longstanding partners return at varying levels – such as Dr Pepper, State Farm and Discover – while other deals, such as sponsorship pacts with DirecTV and TIAA, have brought new businesses into the fold.” McGillicuddy adds: “Closer coordination with the conference than ever before [has been a catalyst]. We've been able to combine that corporate sponsorship sales effort with our media sales effort, both for the Big Ten Network and more broadly. The combination of those two things [has paid off].” BTN will broadcast one-third of all Big Ten football games this year, including a guaranteed two contests from each school, one of which must be a conference game. The network will also feature 16 of the league’s 18 programs over the first three weeks of the season. (link)

EA Sports President Cam Weber tells SBJ’s Austin Karp the response to College Football 25 has risen “far beyond our expectations,” adding: “The thing that's really impressed me has been just the way the community has embraced the game. … So much could have gone wrong. The approach, how much we were paying them, the approach to reaching them, the tier of programs, the athletes we chose – even the scrutiny of what should the cover look like for a college football game…all of these things could have gone poorly, and they all went so well.” Weber also says the game has been a windfall for console manufacturers. ”I've also had numerous calls from senior executives at Sony and Microsoft saying, ‘Cam, we're seeing an uptick of people buying consoles, lapsed gamers that haven't actually migrated to these newer generations of consoles that are actually making the decision to buy a console because they're so excited to come back and play college football.’” (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Ada Brown has blocked the FTC’s ban on noncompete agreements, preventing the rule from taking effect in September. Brown ruled that the FTC lacked authority to issue substantive rules related to unfair methods of competition, including the noncompete rule, which would have prohibited companies from restricting their employees’ ability to work for rivals. FTC spokesperson Victoria Graham: “We are seriously considering a potential appeal, and today’s decision does not prevent the FTC from addressing noncompetes through case-by-case enforcement actions.” (link)

Collegiate athletic programs have significantly transformed their approach to stadium design and revenue generation. Traditionally, stadiums were built primarily to accommodate large crowds for football games, with seating capacity being a key priority. However, in response to changing economic dynamics and the increasing demand for enhanced fan experiences, there has been a noticeable shift toward reducing overall stadium capacity in favor of creating more premium areas.
This strategic shift is driven by maximizing revenue beyond the limited number of football games each season. Athletic administrators recognize that relying solely on ticket sales from football games is no longer sufficient to sustain and grow their programs. Instead, they are focusing on creating revenue-generating spaces within stadiums that can be utilized for a variety of events throughout the year.
One popular trend is the development of premium seating and hospitality areas that offer fans exclusive amenities and experiences. These areas may include luxury suites, club lounges and VIP sections that provide comfortable seating, gourmet dining options and access to private facilities. By catering to high-end clientele, universities can command premium pricing and generate substantial revenue from these premium areas.
Moreover, stadiums are updated to accommodate a diverse range of events beyond football games. Concerts, festivals, corporate events and even recreational activities like Topgolf have become viable options for maximizing stadium utilization and generating additional income. These events attract different demographics and contribute to the stadium's role as a versatile community venue.
Athletic administrators are also exploring partnerships and sponsorship opportunities to further monetize stadium spaces. Naming rights, ad placements on the playing field, and partnerships with local businesses can provide a steady income stream while enhancing the overall fan experience.
These innovative approaches benefit the university, enrich the fan experience and strengthen community engagement.

Arizona State Assoc. AD Vince Volpe told Missouri State stakeholders that if selected as the Bears’ next AD, he would like to “modernize” the department. Volpe said he believes he's "uniquely positioned" to help Missouri State in four key areas: fundraising, community engagement, helping to build a football program from scratch, and conference realignment. "A modern-day athletics director needs to be in the community. It's about developing meaningful relationships and that's what we've done at every institution I've been at. That's how it's going to be successful at Missouri State. … Meaningful relationships are critical across all revenue units. Whether it's corporate, whether it's butts in seats, ticket sales, group sales, single-game sales, season tickets or philanthropy, it's all about meaningful relationships." Volpe also cited his time at UTRGV as an example of his experience with building a football program. "Is it easier to build a house from scratch or strip it to studs and renovate the house you already have? At our previous stop in South Texas, we did not have a football stadium. We were fortunate enough with some timing with a donor that owned a USL team folded with a stadium that was less than 10 years old. Within six months, we were able to buy that stadium with $60M with $20M coming from a lead donor.” More from Volpe. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne talks roster limits, naming rights, the House settlement and more with 247Sports’ Alex Scarborough. Byrne says of the overall changes within the industry: "I think, at times, we've been guilty of putting our head in the sand on some of this. And so I vowed that I was going to communicate the best that I could, being sensitive to our head coaches. That started early in the last academic year. We knew there was a significant shift to what we would be looking at with what the House settlement meant. And now, while there's a structure in place and while there's an opportunity for people to look at it, the keys to the house have not been turned over — no pun intended. So what we can do now is work on modeling to adjust to new realities." Byrne notes that one challenge athletic departments face is the public perception that there is an unlimited amount of money, “whether that's how we should spend money on facilities, whether that's how we pay people in our department, whether that's what sports we have, whether that's the cost of what hot dogs or tickets should be or when you should start a game.” On a 50/50 revenue-share with student-athletes, Byrne says: "Rarely do they ever mention that we're not the pros. … And we have been slow to change and that's not good, and we are changing. But when they talk about that 50%, there's never any recognition that we have 21 sports. And one of them makes a good, healthy profit — football. And one of them turns a profit — men's basketball.” Can the Crimson Tide stay at 21 sports moving forward? “We sure want to. … We're working through what the long-term model looks like — just like everybody else is right now.” (link)

USF president Rhea Law tells trustees that “when I am out in the community, interestingly, the thing that I hear the most is, 'You're gonna get that stadium done, right?' It’s a big pleasure now to be able to say October 18. Big party. Be there.” The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker notes that October 18 is the groundbreaking date, the day before the Bulls host UAB. … Another USF stadium note: A BoT committee document lists the anticipated completion date as July 2027. I've seen slightly different dates* in different documents over the months, but that's the latest. *All recently with the stadium being ready for the '27 season.” (link)

Oklahoma raised a record $110.3M in total donations and pledges during FY24, eclipsing the previous high of $109M set in FY22. The department also secured a record-setting 17 commitments of at least $1M in FY24, breaking the previous single-year high of 11, set in FY23. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione: “It’s a very exciting time as we transition to the SEC, but we’re also living through, easily, the most disruptive and critical moment in college athletics. We’re beyond fortunate to have supporters who know what it takes to provide a premier experience for our student-athletes and fans, and who continue to step up and ensure we have what we need to do just that.” (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman breaks down who’s using what technology on the sidelines this football season, noting that “several [conferences] have followed the NFL’s lead by adding Microsoft Surface devices, while the ACC, Big Ten and SEC have gone with Apple’s iPad product line. On screen, multiple leagues are using DVSport Rewind technology to power the devices. The SEC, however, has tapped Catapult, a performance analytics platform already used by most powerhouse programs (and NFL teams) for player assessments in practice.” Catapult Chief Product Officer Matt Bairos tells Feldman that 95% of DI teams “use our solution to manage coaches’ video six days a week. The seventh day was really missing.” In the SEC’s system, “video will be distributed from a central hub onto two private networks, one for each team. Catapult has hired nearly 50 gameday technicians (three per venue) to help implement the procedure. Plays are cut up and tagged to be reviewed based on situation, helping coaches on the sideline to pull up the right set of clips to show players. Assistants in the booth can further flag specific moments for sideline discussion, and Apple Pencils will be available for telestration,” per Feldman, who adds: “The iPads feature a new, nano-texture glass screen (typically a $100 upgrade option) for increased visibility in the Southern sun, and they’ll be stored in custom-built carts similarly adapted for hot environments.” Additionally, medical personnel will have in-game access to help identify and treat injuries. Western Illinois is laying off all nine of its library faculty, eight of whom are tenured or on the tenure track, as part of a broader plan to offset a $22M budget deficit caused by rising operational costs and a 21% enrollment drop since fall 2019. WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup: “In order to address financial stability, we must recognize that our institution, like so many others across the country, must be the right size and the right shape to serve this number of students. It is heartbreaking to come to this point in our institution’s path where we are at a crossroads with no choice but to make a significant financial shift for the ultimate sustainability of the institution.” (link)
