Hiram AD Scott Pohlman is the latest D3.ticker AD in Residence to talk about the Terriers’ move to the PAC, hiring and more. The move from the NCAC to the PAC came down to three factors for HC: missed class time, economics and competitive balance, with Pohlman noting the farthest game in the new league is almost four hours shorter each way, meaning the department will not need overnight stays for conference competitions. As a former coach, Pohlman spends a “great deal of time” talking to coaching candidates about expectations and their four pillars of winning: “Winning on the field, court or pool; winning at recruiting – both the quality of the recruitable athlete and the number of expected recruits to bring in; winning at team retention rate; and winning in our graduation rates.” Speaking of winning, Pohlman says he looks for coaches “who have made a difference in the programs they are coming from. Even if they come from a losing program, we look to see if they made positive strides during the time they were at their institutions.” Further: “One of the hardest things to judge, and sometimes miss, is team chemistry and their interaction with the members of their teams. The NCAA unveiled the five initial membership-sponsored legislative proposals for the 2025 NCAA Convention. Those proposals include reducing the number of core members for multi-sport conferences from seven to six for championship access and AQs, establishing a process for federated playing rules to be enacted via the DIII Management Council, requiring postgraduate students to have been eligible at their previous institution to remain eligible, eliminating the Ice Hockey exemption to begin off-ice practices prior to the start of preseason practice and allowing all multi-sport conferences to have a primary representative on the National SAAC. On the federated rules process: “The current federated rules process for Division III, which is captured in policy as opposed to legislation, has been ineffective in including meaningful and representative Division III input on playing rules changes. The existing process is not representative of the entire division and is insufficient in determining which playing rules are most appropriately federated. This proposal would allow Management Council, a body legislatively designed to be representative of the entire Division, to review proposed rules changes for a philosophical or financial impact on Division III and take action to exempt Division III from approved common playing rules.” More details. The Empire 8 inks a three-year streaming partnership with Hudl that will see all 26 E8 conference sports from the 12 members exclusively on the Empire 8 Network. As part of the deal, certain E8 home games will use AI-powered Hudl Focus cameras to capture the action. Executive Director Chuck Mitrano: “They have distinguished themselves amongst other platforms and will provide an excellent experience for our institutions, viewers in addition families and friends of our student-athletes.” (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Ada Brown has blocked the FTC’s ban on noncompete agreements, preventing the rule from taking effect in September. Brown ruled that the FTC lacked authority to issue substantive rules related to unfair methods of competition, including the noncompete rule, which would have prohibited companies from restricting their employees’ ability to work for rivals. FTC spokesperson Victoria Graham: “We are seriously considering a potential appeal, and today’s decision does not prevent the FTC from addressing noncompetes through case-by-case enforcement actions.” (link)
