Incoming Houston AD Eddie Nuñez’s contract with the Cougars is worth $5M over five years. Nuñez will earn $900K in the first year and receive $50K raises in each of the next four years, and he is eligible to receive deferred compensation in the amount of 12% of his base salary annually, which vests after the third year “but subject to risk of loss if not employed by the university at the end of the three-year period.” The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte notes Nuñez can earn an additional $400K in incentives based on financial and on-field performance, including a $250K bonus for operational and financial performance “based on goals to be agreed upon annually.” Other performance incentives include a one-time $50K payment if any UH athletic team or student-athlete wins a conference championship; $25K for a College Football Playoff appearance; $25K for a men’s or women’s basketball Final Four appearance and $100K if any one team or student-athlete wins a national championship. UH will provide temporary housing for up to four months or a housing stipend of $20K ($5K monthly). Nuñez will also receive a one-time payment of $50K at the time he signs the contract. UH will also pay New Mexico a $150K buyout. (link)

The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte also reports that an agenda item on the Houston System Board of Regents Endowment Management Committee meeting on Wednesday is a request for approval to “liquidate up to $10M from the UH Core Pool quasi endowment to ‘fund a loan to the UH Athletics department.’ The loan is to "cover operating expenses during a transitional period for Athletics" and will be repaid over an 11-year term.” (link)

New Mexico Football HC Bronco Mendenhall is optimistic that UNM will find the right person to succeed former Lobos AD Eddie Nuñez: “New opportunities come when you do great work. So, anything but gratitude and excitement for him doesn’t seem to be aligned. Both Holly (Mendenhall’s wife) and I are super excited for his opportunity, grateful for the chance that we had while he was here, appreciative of all the work that he’s done.” Mendenhall adds: “I trust our leaders. … Quite frankly, I’m going to coach our team. There’s a lot that I have going. If my opinion is asked, I’ll be glad to share. If my advice is warranted or requested, I’ll be glad to share that. Other than that, I don’t intend to be involved and I’ll just trust the process.” Men’s Basketball HC Richard Pitino also expressed gratitude for Nuñez, adding: “As for being involved in picking an AD, President Stokes and her people certainly are plenty capable of getting the right fit for New Mexico.” (link)

In the first of a multi-part interview with 247Sports’ Carter Karels, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts talks about the clause in each football coach’s contract which states they may be renegotiated in good faith if the changing landscape in college athletics causes a "serious financial exigency.” Alberts explains it was not an attempt to “precisely define” such an exigency and adds: “What the reality is – and by the way, financial exigency clauses in contracts are not new; it was in my first contract I got in 2009 – the reality is that we are undergoing profound change in our industry, and nobody exactly knows where we are going. When you think about when some of those languages were talked about, remember, we had not had a proposed settlement in the House case. It is probably one of the reasons why there was some reception – not because of our contracts, but nationally – into considering settlement. You had a lawsuit that was deemed a class action lawsuit that, if it went to trial and it is trebled…there would not be an athletic department in America that was not bankrupt. We are done. You see what I am saying? So I understand a lot can be made of those types of clauses. It is not an effort to create a new industry standard. I think it is more reflective of the reality of where our business lies today.” (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe describes what success looks like in Football HC Jeff Choate’s first season: "There are a few things. Obviously showing progress. How hard the team plays. How well-run of an operation it is. All those things are going to happen. I have no doubt about those. How many of those convert to wins? I guess we'll see. But one of the things that he continues to talk about that is a sign of a building program is how well they'll be playing in November, and I think that will be fun. Right now, I'd love to see 25,000 people at the SMU game. Unfortunately, that is not the direction it's heading, although we have a week left to go. But that's what we expect. As people start to talk about it, they start to see how hard the team is playing, they come to a game and have a good experience, then they start to come back and because we'll be playing really well at the end of the year, hopefully it continues to build as opposed to go the other way around." The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer details what Georgia coaches and athletic staff members are set to earn this year. UGA Football HC Kirby Smart’s salary is set at $13M, up from the $10.75M he was set to make. Women’s Basketball HC Katie Abrahamson-Henderson’s salary is now $1,005,000, putting her in the seven-figure club for the first time alongside Baseball HC Wes Johnson, whose new raise brings his salary from $702K to $1M. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks tells Weiszer: “If you look at the average salaries of those four sports, that’s just where it’s headed.” Meanwhile, Weiszer notes that nine UGA coaches and Brooks make at least $1M. Men’s Basketball HC Mike White is the second-highest paid at $3,610,000, followed by football defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann at $2,003,000. Schumann is one of four football HCs making more than $1.2M. Brooks' annual pay is now $1.275M, including a retention bonus. Full database. (link)

A new study conducted by researchers at BYU, Kansas, and Northwestern is linking sports betting with long-term negative financial consequences for gamblers. The researchers used credit and debit card transaction data from 2010 to September 2023 to analyze how people spend their money and found that “people are basically taking away money from long-term investments, and they’re spending it more in the present,” Scott Baker, a co-author and a finance professor at Northwestern, tells Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming. Baker adds: “But then we also see that they are more, maybe, exposing themselves, to some extent, to more financial instability or financial fragility, kind of increasing amounts of overdrafts, running up more debt on their credit card, and things like that.” From the paper: “The legalization of sports betting has far-reaching implications for household financial behavior and health. Our results show that not only does sports betting lead to increased betting activity, but it also leads to higher credit card balances, less available credit, a reduction in net investments, and an increase in lottery play. These findings suggest that while sports betting offers new avenues for state revenue, it also introduces significant financial risks to local residents, especially for already constrained households.” (link)

Straight to the Point publisher Steve Ruddock argues it’s too soon to write off ESPN Bet as a failure, explaining that “we knew product improvements weren’t expected until the start of the 2024 NFL season. Yes, the current numbers are concerning, but as I’ve previously said, it’s not at a pull-the-plug point. Now, if ESPN Bet enters 2025 without a significant increase in its market share, the naysayers will be proven correct.” Among the enhancements in Penn Entertainment’s Q2 presentation were profit boosts and expanded and improved SGP options, along with several other updated features, and Ruddock adds: “On the integration front, ESPN Bet will also be integrated into ESPN’s home and scores pages and ‘into the category-leading ESPN Fantasy App in the coming weeks, including deep-linked markets and personalized in-app betting offers.’” During the Q2 earnings call, Penn CEO Jay Snowden explained: “In parallel with our efforts, our partners at ESPN are expanding our unique ESPN Bet media integrations, including those with ESPN’s leading fantasy football products, which will feature deep-linked markets and personalized in-app betting offers.” Snowden also said that account linking would occur before the end of 2025, providing “personalized experiences inside ESPN Bet based on a user’s ESPN Fantasy team and ESPN favorites.” Newly appointed CTO Aaron LaBerge added: “The goal is that you can move between these apps really fluidly and get what you want, where you want it. If you place a parlay on ESPN Bet, it’s going to appear in the ESPN app. You have to do no work. It’s going to be seamless.” Ruddock: “Based on Penn’s comments, the company is aware that the NFL season is when rubber needs to meet the road.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann, Indiana law professor John T. Holden and Fordham law professor Marc Edelman co-author a paper for the Boston College Law Review titled “(Still) Anticompetitive College Sports” in which they note: “Some commentators, eagerly amplifying talking points shared by class action attorneys who stand to handsomely profit, have described this proposed [House, et al.] settlement as a monumental step to resolve the longstanding labor strife within college sports. However, this rosy portrayal of the proposed settlement ignores that, as proposed, the settlement would continue to allow NCAA member schools to deny college athletes access to free labor markets, as well as would continue to deny them any meaningful voice in determining the future governance of the college sports industry. The settlement also ignores important questions in terms of implementation, including the role of Title IX on proposed revenue allocation. This article explains why, even in the proposed new era of intercollegiate sports, there remain bona-fide anticompetitive concerns pertaining the NCAA's rules, as well as meaningful concerns pertaining to the future representation and voice of college athletes.” The paper goes on to analyze the current antitrust cases facing the NCAA, the employment cases facing the NCAA, unsettled Title IX issues and other factors complicating the House settlement. It also offers four “better alternatives to remove anticompetitive restraints in college sports,” including a true free market approach, a competitive conference approach, a labor union approach and an athlete equity approach. “The true free market approach is a superior way for allocating college sports revenue to the athletes than the proposed House settlement approach for at least four different reasons. First, to the extent one believes that the fair market price is the free market price, all college athletes under the free market approach would receive their ‘fair’ wage and not some wage designated through ad hoc mechanisms. Second, a true free market approach would obviate NCAA member colleges’ potential liability under federal antitrust law because schools would no longer be colluding to fix athlete salaries.” Full paper. CBS’ Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander return with the Candid Coaches series in which they survey over 100 DI men’s basketball coaches ranging from high-major HCs to small-school ACs. To start, they ask: “What is the most amount of NIL money somebody has asked you or your staff to pay for a player?” 10.4% of respondents indicate they’ve been asked for $2M+, 40.6% say between $1M and $2M, and 49% say less than $1M. Parrish clarifies that “among the power-conference coaches we polled, the main thing you need to know is that a whopping 77% of them told us their staff has been asked to pay at least $1M in NIL for a player. Does every power-conference transfer ask for that much money? No. Does every power-conference program pay that much money? No. But what the results of our poll showed is that impactful transfers at the high-major level are indeed routinely asking for at least $1M to enroll. What they're actually getting to enroll is another story.” The highest figure cited by a coach was $5M. Parrish also explains that more than 75% of the coaches who answered “less than $1M” work outside of the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12, ACC and Big East. One coach on how the going rate is increasing rapidly: "The same player who got $50K a few years ago is now getting $200K – and the player who got $200K a few years ago is probably asking for a million (now) and nearly getting it. I used to have a good NIL package. About $2.5M. That used to be good. But it's nothing now compared to some SEC and Big 12 schools. I swear some schools are spending $6M or $7M in the transfer portal. We can't do that at my place. But that's about what it takes now." More. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown believes Northern Arizona’s rollout of the Astrojacks alternate moniker and Blouie the Space Ox mascot “isn’t just a goofy one-off promotion. I actually think it’s a strategy that can be scaled and replicated across mid and low-majors to bring in actual money. If you are a dominant program that perennially competes for national championships, you’re going to be able to sell tickets. I don’t want to say that folks at Ohio State football or Duke basketball don’t have to try to move tickets or find sponsorship partners, because I know they do…but on some level, there is an understanding that you could just throw the doors open and lots of people are going to show up. Northern Arizona is not one of those programs. Most schools in DI aren’t. They do not have the ticket and promotional model of most major professional sports teams. The value proposition to watching Big Sky college basketball, Southland football or MAC baseball is closer to that of minor league sports. … If minor league ball clubs want folks to show up, they know they have to be prepared to stand on their head a little bit.” Opening up this new revenue stream comes with challenges, though, as Brown notes that “existing apparel contracts, retail distribution channels and minimum orders will make it very difficult for most mid-majors to produce a one-off alternate uniform package to sell in the bookstore and local athletic apparel shops. But I don’t think there is anything stopping NAU from, say, auctioning off the uniforms at the end of the season. Split the money with an NIL collective, use them as flagships for a donor silent auction, make them a grand prize attached to donor points, etc.” (link)

Dr Pepper’s Fansville returns for a seventh season and has released an ad featuring Texas QB Quinn Ewers as Brian Bosworth’s deputy and a sign-stealing reference. Ryan Lehr, the chief creative officer at Deutsch LA, the ad agency that has the Dr Pepper account, says of Ewers: "Quinn was so eager, so fun getting to know. We kind of met with him in the trailer and gave him the 101 of what was going to happen. The one thing about these high-level athletes is they are no stranger to high-pressure situations. … It's like him and Bosworth as a comedy team. We did challenge Quinn a little bit more. In the past maybe [DJ Uiagalelei] was just sort of playing himself. Bryce [Young] was playing himself. We thought it would be a good opportunity to be more of a character." (link, link)
