Earlier this month, the DIII Administrative Committee covered a number of topics. The committee is working to finalize the Financial and Risk Management Working Group roster by early next month so it can begin in May. Looking ahead, the committee discussed possible 2024 legislative proposals including expanding championship brackets, sponsoring STUNT as an expanding sport and updating the philosophy statement; the Playing Rules Oversight Panel’s recommendation to eliminate the provision requiring “playing rules to be common across divisions” with the expectation that it would be complete by July; and reviewed enhancement concepts for championships and student-athlete experience including “exploring bracket expansion with a consistent access ratio applied to Pool C berths and providing sport committees the flexibility to add one or two flights during the selection process to protect higher-seeded teams within regions to avoid matchups in the preliminary rounds … increased travel party size, increased per diem, additional branding at first and second round sites, better preparation and support of site representative and host institution.” Further, the governance structure has “started to identify strategic priorities for the FY25 budget cycle when the division will receive an 11% revenue increase.” More. The SLIAC will grow its list of sponsored championships to 17 with the addition of Men’s and Women’s Wrestling in 2023-24. Commissioner Kaiser: “Men's wrestling at the collegiate level has rebounded and continued to grow in numbers and stature during the past five years while the sport of women's wrestling has absolutely exploded onto the intercollegiate scene with more schools adding the sport each year.” (link)

Sportico’s Libit pens an extremely lengthy and complex profile of Winthrop Intelligence/Win AD founders Ben and Drue Moore, observing the duo that built a business on transparency for the college athletics industry also “seem to have discovered the allures of inscrutability, embarking on a series of opaque, risky and invariably failing business pursuits in partnership with a man named Scott Brooks.” Libit characterizes Brooks as an “ex-felon with a court-documented history of mental illness” who has ingratiated himself with the Moores and under whose guidance the Moores have “pursued a hodgepodge of speculative and unfamiliar entrepreneurial endeavors…none of which have proven financially successful—at least not in the conventional sense. All the while, Win AD profits have been funneled through a convoluted asset-concealment scheme involving shell companies, trusts, collusive lawsuits and questionable bankruptcies.” Furthermore, Libit reports “their activities have been denounced in multiple courts, where opposing counsel and at least one judge have suggested the cousins are engaged in an illegal conspiracy.” The details are as numerous as they are multilayered, including Ben’s ex-wife calling Win AD a “cash cow” in divorce proceedings and, “They employed a daily housekeeper, a chef, and private tutors for their children, whom Elizabeth eventually began homeschooling so the family could travel around the world.” Full story, which includes the disclaimer: “Not unlike Win AD’s signature database, this article is built on thousands of public records, including state and federal court filings, police and jail documents.” (link)

Former Dartmouth (DI) Alpine Skiing HC Dodge shares his “ideas for some significant changes to keep NCAA skiing moving forward,” which include separating the alpine and cross-country structures, awards and schedules; eliminating the NCAA age eligibility exemption for skiing; and creating A and B divisions in the EISA Alpine Conference. Specifically, Dodge suggests the NCAA should change its framework of recognizing men’s and women’s skiing and instead recognize skiing as co-ed alpine and cross-country, adding: “Currently, equal numbers are allocated for men and women for the championships, 148 spots for men and 148 places for women. However, the allocations between alpine and cross-country are not equal, but they should be. There are 26 NCAA alpine and 26 NCAA cross-country member institutions across NCAA Divisions I, II and III.” More. (link)
