Arizona State Assoc. AD Vince Volpe told Missouri State stakeholders that if selected as the Bears’ next AD, he would like to “modernize” the department. Volpe said he believes he's "uniquely positioned" to help Missouri State in four key areas: fundraising, community engagement, helping to build a football program from scratch, and conference realignment. "A modern-day athletics director needs to be in the community. It's about developing meaningful relationships and that's what we've done at every institution I've been at. That's how it's going to be successful at Missouri State. … Meaningful relationships are critical across all revenue units. Whether it's corporate, whether it's butts in seats, ticket sales, group sales, single-game sales, season tickets or philanthropy, it's all about meaningful relationships." Volpe also cited his time at UTRGV as an example of his experience with building a football program. "Is it easier to build a house from scratch or strip it to studs and renovate the house you already have? At our previous stop in South Texas, we did not have a football stadium. We were fortunate enough with some timing with a donor that owned a USL team folded with a stadium that was less than 10 years old. Within six months, we were able to buy that stadium with $60M with $20M coming from a lead donor.” More from Volpe. (link)

St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino continues to push for Tom Jurich to get another AD opportunity. Pitino on the New Mexico AD search: “Would love to see New Mexico hire the best AD in America, Tom Jurich. I've worked with the best and none are better than this man. Had Louisville Top 10 women's & men's hoops. Top 10 football, top 10 soccer, top 10 baseball and best facilities in collegiate sports. Superstar!” Pitino’s son, Richard, is the Lobos’ Men’s Basketball HC. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne talks roster limits, naming rights, the House settlement and more with 247Sports’ Alex Scarborough. Byrne says of the overall changes within the industry: "I think, at times, we've been guilty of putting our head in the sand on some of this. And so I vowed that I was going to communicate the best that I could, being sensitive to our head coaches. That started early in the last academic year. We knew there was a significant shift to what we would be looking at with what the House settlement meant. And now, while there's a structure in place and while there's an opportunity for people to look at it, the keys to the house have not been turned over — no pun intended. So what we can do now is work on modeling to adjust to new realities." Byrne notes that one challenge athletic departments face is the public perception that there is an unlimited amount of money, “whether that's how we should spend money on facilities, whether that's how we pay people in our department, whether that's what sports we have, whether that's the cost of what hot dogs or tickets should be or when you should start a game.” On a 50/50 revenue-share with student-athletes, Byrne says: "Rarely do they ever mention that we're not the pros. … And we have been slow to change and that's not good, and we are changing. But when they talk about that 50%, there's never any recognition that we have 21 sports. And one of them makes a good, healthy profit — football. And one of them turns a profit — men's basketball.” Can the Crimson Tide stay at 21 sports moving forward? “We sure want to. … We're working through what the long-term model looks like — just like everybody else is right now.” (link)

USF president Rhea Law tells trustees that “when I am out in the community, interestingly, the thing that I hear the most is, 'You're gonna get that stadium done, right?' It’s a big pleasure now to be able to say October 18. Big party. Be there.” The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker notes that October 18 is the groundbreaking date, the day before the Bulls host UAB. … Another USF stadium note: A BoT committee document lists the anticipated completion date as July 2027. I've seen slightly different dates* in different documents over the months, but that's the latest. *All recently with the stadium being ready for the '27 season.” (link)

Oklahoma raised a record $110.3M in total donations and pledges during FY24, eclipsing the previous high of $109M set in FY22. The department also secured a record-setting 17 commitments of at least $1M in FY24, breaking the previous single-year high of 11, set in FY23. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione: “It’s a very exciting time as we transition to the SEC, but we’re also living through, easily, the most disruptive and critical moment in college athletics. We’re beyond fortunate to have supporters who know what it takes to provide a premier experience for our student-athletes and fans, and who continue to step up and ensure we have what we need to do just that.” (link)

Sportico’s Jacob Feldman breaks down who’s using what technology on the sidelines this football season, noting that “several [conferences] have followed the NFL’s lead by adding Microsoft Surface devices, while the ACC, Big Ten and SEC have gone with Apple’s iPad product line. On screen, multiple leagues are using DVSport Rewind technology to power the devices. The SEC, however, has tapped Catapult, a performance analytics platform already used by most powerhouse programs (and NFL teams) for player assessments in practice.” Catapult Chief Product Officer Matt Bairos tells Feldman that 95% of DI teams “use our solution to manage coaches’ video six days a week. The seventh day was really missing.” In the SEC’s system, “video will be distributed from a central hub onto two private networks, one for each team. Catapult has hired nearly 50 gameday technicians (three per venue) to help implement the procedure. Plays are cut up and tagged to be reviewed based on situation, helping coaches on the sideline to pull up the right set of clips to show players. Assistants in the booth can further flag specific moments for sideline discussion, and Apple Pencils will be available for telestration,” per Feldman, who adds: “The iPads feature a new, nano-texture glass screen (typically a $100 upgrade option) for increased visibility in the Southern sun, and they’ll be stored in custom-built carts similarly adapted for hot environments.” Additionally, medical personnel will have in-game access to help identify and treat injuries. Western Illinois is laying off all nine of its library faculty, eight of whom are tenured or on the tenure track, as part of a broader plan to offset a $22M budget deficit caused by rising operational costs and a 21% enrollment drop since fall 2019. WIU Interim President Kristi Mindrup: “In order to address financial stability, we must recognize that our institution, like so many others across the country, must be the right size and the right shape to serve this number of students. It is heartbreaking to come to this point in our institution’s path where we are at a crossroads with no choice but to make a significant financial shift for the ultimate sustainability of the institution.” (link)

Incoming Houston AD Eddie Nuñez’s contract with the Cougars is worth $5M over five years. Nuñez will earn $900K in the first year and receive $50K raises in each of the next four years, and he is eligible to receive deferred compensation in the amount of 12% of his base salary annually, which vests after the third year “but subject to risk of loss if not employed by the university at the end of the three-year period.” The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte notes Nuñez can earn an additional $400K in incentives based on financial and on-field performance, including a $250K bonus for operational and financial performance “based on goals to be agreed upon annually.” Other performance incentives include a one-time $50K payment if any UH athletic team or student-athlete wins a conference championship; $25K for a College Football Playoff appearance; $25K for a men’s or women’s basketball Final Four appearance and $100K if any one team or student-athlete wins a national championship. UH will provide temporary housing for up to four months or a housing stipend of $20K ($5K monthly). Nuñez will also receive a one-time payment of $50K at the time he signs the contract. UH will also pay New Mexico a $150K buyout. (link)

The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte also reports that an agenda item on the Houston System Board of Regents Endowment Management Committee meeting on Wednesday is a request for approval to “liquidate up to $10M from the UH Core Pool quasi endowment to ‘fund a loan to the UH Athletics department.’ The loan is to "cover operating expenses during a transitional period for Athletics" and will be repaid over an 11-year term.” (link)

New Mexico Football HC Bronco Mendenhall is optimistic that UNM will find the right person to succeed former Lobos AD Eddie Nuñez: “New opportunities come when you do great work. So, anything but gratitude and excitement for him doesn’t seem to be aligned. Both Holly (Mendenhall’s wife) and I are super excited for his opportunity, grateful for the chance that we had while he was here, appreciative of all the work that he’s done.” Mendenhall adds: “I trust our leaders. … Quite frankly, I’m going to coach our team. There’s a lot that I have going. If my opinion is asked, I’ll be glad to share. If my advice is warranted or requested, I’ll be glad to share that. Other than that, I don’t intend to be involved and I’ll just trust the process.” Men’s Basketball HC Richard Pitino also expressed gratitude for Nuñez, adding: “As for being involved in picking an AD, President Stokes and her people certainly are plenty capable of getting the right fit for New Mexico.” (link)

In the first of a multi-part interview with 247Sports’ Carter Karels, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts talks about the clause in each football coach’s contract which states they may be renegotiated in good faith if the changing landscape in college athletics causes a "serious financial exigency.” Alberts explains it was not an attempt to “precisely define” such an exigency and adds: “What the reality is – and by the way, financial exigency clauses in contracts are not new; it was in my first contract I got in 2009 – the reality is that we are undergoing profound change in our industry, and nobody exactly knows where we are going. When you think about when some of those languages were talked about, remember, we had not had a proposed settlement in the House case. It is probably one of the reasons why there was some reception – not because of our contracts, but nationally – into considering settlement. You had a lawsuit that was deemed a class action lawsuit that, if it went to trial and it is trebled…there would not be an athletic department in America that was not bankrupt. We are done. You see what I am saying? So I understand a lot can be made of those types of clauses. It is not an effort to create a new industry standard. I think it is more reflective of the reality of where our business lies today.” (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe describes what success looks like in Football HC Jeff Choate’s first season: "There are a few things. Obviously showing progress. How hard the team plays. How well-run of an operation it is. All those things are going to happen. I have no doubt about those. How many of those convert to wins? I guess we'll see. But one of the things that he continues to talk about that is a sign of a building program is how well they'll be playing in November, and I think that will be fun. Right now, I'd love to see 25,000 people at the SMU game. Unfortunately, that is not the direction it's heading, although we have a week left to go. But that's what we expect. As people start to talk about it, they start to see how hard the team is playing, they come to a game and have a good experience, then they start to come back and because we'll be playing really well at the end of the year, hopefully it continues to build as opposed to go the other way around." The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer details what Georgia coaches and athletic staff members are set to earn this year. UGA Football HC Kirby Smart’s salary is set at $13M, up from the $10.75M he was set to make. Women’s Basketball HC Katie Abrahamson-Henderson’s salary is now $1,005,000, putting her in the seven-figure club for the first time alongside Baseball HC Wes Johnson, whose new raise brings his salary from $702K to $1M. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks tells Weiszer: “If you look at the average salaries of those four sports, that’s just where it’s headed.” Meanwhile, Weiszer notes that nine UGA coaches and Brooks make at least $1M. Men’s Basketball HC Mike White is the second-highest paid at $3,610,000, followed by football defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann at $2,003,000. Schumann is one of four football HCs making more than $1.2M. Brooks' annual pay is now $1.275M, including a retention bonus. Full database. (link)

A new study conducted by researchers at BYU, Kansas, and Northwestern is linking sports betting with long-term negative financial consequences for gamblers. The researchers used credit and debit card transaction data from 2010 to September 2023 to analyze how people spend their money and found that “people are basically taking away money from long-term investments, and they’re spending it more in the present,” Scott Baker, a co-author and a finance professor at Northwestern, tells Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming. Baker adds: “But then we also see that they are more, maybe, exposing themselves, to some extent, to more financial instability or financial fragility, kind of increasing amounts of overdrafts, running up more debt on their credit card, and things like that.” From the paper: “The legalization of sports betting has far-reaching implications for household financial behavior and health. Our results show that not only does sports betting lead to increased betting activity, but it also leads to higher credit card balances, less available credit, a reduction in net investments, and an increase in lottery play. These findings suggest that while sports betting offers new avenues for state revenue, it also introduces significant financial risks to local residents, especially for already constrained households.” (link)

Straight to the Point publisher Steve Ruddock argues it’s too soon to write off ESPN Bet as a failure, explaining that “we knew product improvements weren’t expected until the start of the 2024 NFL season. Yes, the current numbers are concerning, but as I’ve previously said, it’s not at a pull-the-plug point. Now, if ESPN Bet enters 2025 without a significant increase in its market share, the naysayers will be proven correct.” Among the enhancements in Penn Entertainment’s Q2 presentation were profit boosts and expanded and improved SGP options, along with several other updated features, and Ruddock adds: “On the integration front, ESPN Bet will also be integrated into ESPN’s home and scores pages and ‘into the category-leading ESPN Fantasy App in the coming weeks, including deep-linked markets and personalized in-app betting offers.’” During the Q2 earnings call, Penn CEO Jay Snowden explained: “In parallel with our efforts, our partners at ESPN are expanding our unique ESPN Bet media integrations, including those with ESPN’s leading fantasy football products, which will feature deep-linked markets and personalized in-app betting offers.” Snowden also said that account linking would occur before the end of 2025, providing “personalized experiences inside ESPN Bet based on a user’s ESPN Fantasy team and ESPN favorites.” Newly appointed CTO Aaron LaBerge added: “The goal is that you can move between these apps really fluidly and get what you want, where you want it. If you place a parlay on ESPN Bet, it’s going to appear in the ESPN app. You have to do no work. It’s going to be seamless.” Ruddock: “Based on Penn’s comments, the company is aware that the NFL season is when rubber needs to meet the road.” (link)
