The Big 12 and Connecticut are in “serious negotiations” about the Huskies joining in all sports except Football in 2026, with Football to join in 2031, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds the two sides met in-person last week and Commissioner Brett Yormark will make a presentation to league presidents next week. Dellenger: “As part of any agreement with the conference, the school would need to increase its investment in the football program to a certain degree before joining the Big 12, at earliest, when the league’s new television deal begins in 2031.” Further, the conference is “in deep negotiations” with Allstate on a naming rights sponsorship and in discussion with multiple private equity partners “offering them a percentage stake in the conference for an immediate cash infusion of as much as $50 million to each school.” (link)

The NCAA is exploring changes to its membership financial reporting system (MFRS), according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes there is “increasing pressure to tackle long-standing criticisms about the system’s perceived shortcomings, as well as to address the dawning era of college athlete compensation. … Which MFRS categories should be included in establishing the revenue ‘pool’ has been the subject of recent debate among expert witnesses” as the House settlement unfolds. Meanwhile, the MFRS continues to “lack clarity, leaving much interpretation to the schools, such as with the catch-all category ‘other operating revenue.’ As Sportico previously reported, there’s so much wiggle room in the process that a handful of schools manage each year to claim a perfectly balanced budget, down to the dollar.” NCAA CFO Mario Morris tells Libit he thinks the current MFRS captures “75% to 80%” of an athletic department’s true economic picture but would like to find a way to “get it to 90%.” One specific area of improvement involves identifying the flow of money between schools’ main campuses and athletics, and James Moore & Co. Partner Katie Davis says: “There needs to be more consistent and clarified financial reporting so that those making decisions know what they are basing their decisions on. You’ve got [college] presidents and chancellors at the table. You’ve got attorneys and lobbyists and all these others that maybe don’t fully understand what the financials are telling them, because it is not clear how the NCAA has defined some of the categories.” More. The Football Oversight Committee is recommending the elimination of the 15-day transfer portal in April, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes that, if approved, the change would take effect this cycle. The DI Council, which will consider the proposal, meets via video conference next month and in-person in October, and Dellenger observes: “It is unusual, but not unprecedented, for the council to reject a recommendation from the oversight committee.” Both AFCA and the Power 4 support the recommendation, under which players could only enter the portal during a 30-day window that begins after the completion of conference championship games. NC State AD Boo Corrigan was asked how the department plans to split revenue between sports and said: “I don’t know is an acceptable answer right now. We plan to try to be good at everything.” Corrigan also says what used to be conversations about 10-year plans are now something closer to a three-year plan because of the rapid pace of change in college sports. “The phrase we use is ‘keep your knees bent.’” Where is NC State’s growth potential over the next 10 years? Corrigan: “Up.” (link)

UCF has begun premium sales for its $88M Roth Tower project that will triple the size of the west side premium inventory at FBC Mortgage Stadium. Knights AD Terry Mohajir tells SBJ’s Bret McCormick the in-house sales team is already locking in buyers to 10-year leases and that the pricing makes UCF’s offering the most affordable in the Power 4. “We’ve been extremely pleased with the process so far. They’re not long conversations.” Club seats that previously cost $2,200 annually have increased to $2,800, and, according to a demand study by Legends, the Knights could have charged more; however, Mohajir says it was more important for the school to build its customer base. Also from Mohajir: “The revenue that we realize and yield from the tower is not going to debt. There are some financing charges we pay, but the majority will go to fund our operating budget.” (link)

Charlotte AD Mike HIll Q&As with The Charlotte Observer’s Shane Connuck and explains why student-athletes should pick Charlotte in the NIL era: “In the end, it’s about: ‘Do you want to play? And do you want to make an impact?’ So obviously, NIL is a factor in every single program at every level — including Charlotte. But we have some things here we can offer that other programs don’t have. We’ve talked about leveraging those to our advantage. Being a part of something that hasn’t been done before. Being a part of a program that’s building, that’s young, that’s fresh, that’s in a city that’s on the rise, on a campus that’s on the rise. We’re going to use to our advantage the fact that we live in a major metropolitan area that has just a ton of Fortune 500 companies, which create NIL and internship opportunities for our kids. That resonates a lot with our recruits’ and players’ parents.” When it comes to new sponsorships, HIll says: “We have some exciting plans that we’re working on right now to streamline some of that, particularly as it relates to NIL so that we can become more of a one-stop shop for those commercial opportunities — again, in a city that is loaded with successful businesses, and in a city that relies on this institution for graduates, for research. … The stadium itself is obviously a big piece of that conversation, because what the expansion is going to do is provide us with premium seating that we don’t currently have, that we can sell to corporate Charlotte and also to some of our key supporters, and that will generate additional premium revenue that we can reinvest in the football program.” More from Hill. North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen joins the Hot Mic’s Dom Izzo for a discussion about the upcoming football season and changes to the FCS Playoffs. Larsen says he wouldn’t be surprised if Week 0 eventually becomes Week 1 “because now you’re starting to look at a long season even at the FBS level with building in extra playoff games. So, I wouldn't be surprised if it allows programs maybe to have two bye weeks within the year.” Larsen adds that he’s been pushing to give FCS teams the option to play 12 games every year instead of having, depending on how the calendar, like this is a 12-game season. Last year was 11. At least give them the option. You don’t have to play 12, but having the option would be kind of nice or have the option for another bye week.” In regards to seeding the 9-16 teams in the FCS Playoffs, Larsen explains those teams are going to be treated “exactly like 1-8 have been for history of the tournament where if seeds hold, they're going to be able to either host or they're going to know how the rest of the bracket’s going to play out. … We’ve talked about this for years about trying to make it more of a national tournament and not a regional tournament and I think this is a huge step in that direction.” For the remaining unseeded teams, Larsen says the traditional bracketing principles will remain in place for the first round. “So if a school is within 400 miles of a seeded team, most likely they're going to go there unless they played in the regular season. We’re going to try to still steer away from regular season rematches, at least in week one.” More from Larsen. (link)

Wofford failed to monitor its men's basketball program when former HC Jay McAuley regularly required student-athletes to participate in countable athletically related activities during designated days off, and the school did not have systems in place to detect violations, according to an agreement released by the Committee on Infractions. As a result of McAuley's personal involvement in the violations, the parties agreed that McAuley violated head coach responsibility rules. Because the violations were not discovered until the university president received a letter signed by the basketball team stating that they no longer wanted to play for McAuley, the school and enforcement staff agreed that Wofford did not monitor its men's basketball program. Specifically, the school did not have adequate compliance monitoring systems in place to deter and detect the violations, including failing to collect activity logs for a nine-week period. Penalties include one year of probation, a two-year show-cause order for McAuley, a five-day reduction in on-court preseason men's basketball practice sessions during the 2024-25 academic year and more. In the third of a multipart interview with 247Sports’ Carter Karels, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts discusses why he left Nebraska, staff layoffs in April, institutional alignment and more. On leaving Lincoln for College Station: “I was just really drawn to [A&M president Mark] Welsh, his leadership. But again, I think the opportunity, the campus, the trajectory. I have to be very careful, Carter. Because when I say those things, it appears as if I am saying the place I left is not on that [level]. I am not saying that. Nebraska is doing amazing things. I think Nebraska is going to have a great football season this year.” Alberts explains he was not required to conduct a round of layoffs upon getting hired: “What often happens at a lot of different places is, when you have a lot of turnover in the program, you can get quite a bit of – and it is not the department, but upper-level management – I will call it administrative bloat. At some point, in my opinion, it actually leads to a little bit of a lethargic approach, a lack of discipline. Entitlement is not the right word, but you know what I am saying. It was fairly obvious to me that we had some of that here.” He adds: “Those are fabulous people. They are great leaders. They are all doing really well. So it was not about I want to get rid of these people because I do not know them, but I want to bring all my own people. It was never about that. It was about trying to create a streamlined structure, a more business strategy around how we operate moving forward that is a little bit more lean.” Full Q&A. (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez tells the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte that he told TurnkeyZRG that he was interested in the job, but “I wasn’t going to stop doing my job (at New Mexico). I wasn’t going to be bothering them. That’s not who I am. … For me, as I’ve always said, I am not a person that is going to go searching for every job. That’s not who I have been. I told them for me, I’m going to continue to do my job to the best of my ability. If you call me at some point and want to have a further conversation, I’m all in. Let’s have that conversation.” Nuñez says of his top priorities that “we have multimedia rights that we have to improve. We’ve got to figure that out, which is a big piece of the financial puzzle. I look at that; I look at development, fundraising, what can we do differently. How can we expand it? Like President [Renu Khator] said, what else is out there? It’s great to have Fortune 500 companies and Fortune 1000 companies and your handful of people. We need to build it bigger and better and show people out there why they need to help support our student-athletes.” On reaching out to the Houston community: ”I love the ability to fundraise, talk and get to know people. I’m not going to walk into the first person’s office and say, ‘By the way, I’m Eddie Nuñez. Give me $5 million.’ It’s fine to ask it. I’ll ask it. But that’s not being authentic and genuine. I want them to know who I am, get to know me, and build from there.” Full Q&A. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde urges the NCAA to utilize the images of college athletes’ triumphs at the Paris Olympics to promote Olympic sports in the leadup to the 2028 Games. Among the moments Forde cites is Stanford swimming student-athlete Torri Huske and Virginia student-athlete Gretchen Walsh doing a “star-spangled skip-a-long on the pool deck with Old Glory fluttering behind them” after winning the gold and silver medals in the 100m butterfly, respectively. “The two fastest women in American history in the 100 butterfly likely will compete against each other at ACC championships in February and the NCAA championships in March” and “should be marketed to the public like football or basketball stars.” Forde adds: “This is just one example of untapped Olympic carryover. Gymnasts Jade Carey (Oregon State), Jordan Chiles (UCLA) and Fred Richard (Michigan) are expected to be college athletes in 2024–25. Same with a bunch of other medalists. … It’s time for college athletics to take advantage of the surge in Olympic viewership, carrying it over to NCAA Olympic sports.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips agrees, saying: “It’s time to double down on what we’re doing with Olympic sports. … That’s not just stating that you’re going to be supportive. We’re preparing our biggest asset, our network, for promoting Olympic sports.” This fall, the league plans to broadcast 28 women’s soccer games, 23 men’s soccer games, 20 women’s volleyball games and 16 field hockey games. USC Football HC Lincoln Riley comments on the Trojans’ NIL improvements: “You don’t want to be going to a gunfight with a knife, and in the beginning we were going to a gunfight with like a toy sword. So, we’re definitely…we’ve made a lot of progress, those folks have done a great job and I think some of it, too, just our strategy and I’ve talked about this some, just our strategy on how many high school guys we’re taking, who we’re taking, what we’re targeting has changed drastically. … We have really shifted, as I’ve told you we were going to, we have really shifted not completely away from the portal, I don’t think we’ll ever be completely away from it, but you can just look at the numbers. We’re headed to becoming the developmental program that we want to be long-term for the next 10 or 15 years. With that there’s been more high school recruiting; there’s going to continue to be more. The high school recruiting takes longer, it’s not as fast and furious as portal recruiting. A lot of times you have relationships that are developed for multiple years and having some of the consistency that we’ve had on certain parts of our staff for a long time now makes a difference on that as well. So, it’s become a bigger part of what we’re doing each and every year here and that’s going to continue to happen. And as long as our NIL continues to climb, we’ll continue to be as aggressive there as we need to be.” (link)

Hockey Prospect Radio’s Shane Malloy joins the College Hockey Insider podcast to discuss several topics, including the impact CHL players will have on college hockey if they’re deemed eligible and says, assuming roughly half of CHL players are not academically eligible, there would still be around 600-700 who would be. As for whether the CHL players would be good enough to play college hockey, Malloy explains: “Say, for instance, the CHL and the USHL ever merged and played for the Memorial Cup, the CHL players are just as good and, in some cases, better than the USHL players. … So, it could end up being a flood of players who are eligible. What it will do is it will squeeze out players coming out of the lower end of the USHL, it'll squeeze out the players from the North American Hockey League, it will squeeze out a large number of the high school players. The absolute elite high school players will still play. The middle-of-the-road or even good high school players in the United States, they’ll get beat up by the CHL players in terms of their abilities. It’s going to happen. … For the listeners who are not familiar with the CHL, this isn’t a couple players trickling in. This could end up being 10 players per team in college hockey streaming across the border. Now, there are obviously Canadian players and American-born players that play there. So, where I think the impact will really be is there’s about 10 or 14 really strong programs that are consistently in the top 20 in college hockey. Then if you look at the other [teams], like 21-64, those are the programs that are going to most benefit from the CHL players coming because they’re going to be able to recruit heavy.” (link)

EA Sports College Football 25 is already the bestselling game of 2024, according to tracking firm Circana, whose Executive Director for Video Games, Mat Piscatella, says: “It was above my expectations, although it was a tough one to try and predict. I was expecting it to debut as the biggest college football game in a launch month, but I did not expect it to more than triple the lifetime dollar sales of the previous best-selling game [NCAA Football 07]. It certainly seemed to have mass appeal and generate quite a bit of excitement, even among lapsed console players.” (link)

Three juveniles accused of stealing items from Colorado’s locker room at the Rose Bowl during last year’s football game against UCLA last October are facing felony charges after the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office decided to pursue the case. The 15-year-old and two 16-year-olds each face five felony counts of grand theft and one misdemeanor count of petty theft after allegedly taking jewelry, headphones and cash, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch. Buffs HC Deion Sanders in November called for leniency: “Let’s make sure those kids atone for what transpired, whether it’s community service or whatever it is, but they don’t lose the opportunities to change their lives. They are kids. They made a stupid, dumb, idiotic mistake. When I was 17, 18, so did I. All right? So did you.” (link)
