Lehigh AD Joe Sterrett will step down at the end of this calendar year after more than half a century in Bethlehem. President Joseph Helble: “Joe has brought outstanding leadership, creativity, strategic vision and growth to Lehigh’s athletic operation as well as an unwavering commitment to the institution, and he has served as an example of what it means to lead with integrity throughout. He is a visionary, a guiding force not only at Lehigh but also in the role he played in the formation of the Patriot League itself more than three decades ago. There is no doubt that he leaves a legacy that will endure well beyond his time at Lehigh and will serve as an example for others to follow. Generations of Lehigh athletes who have excelled in our programs and gone on to success in life have benefited from all that Joe has done for Lehigh Athletics.” Sterrett will continue to assist with athletics fundraising efforts through the academic year. Houston Board of Regents Chair Tilman Fertitta remarked during yesterday’s introductory press conference for Cougars AD Eddie Nuñez that “we have to raise a bunch of money for NIL. If we don’t raise money for NIL, we’re not going to be successful. These college athletes are no different than basketball players. Why does a kid want to come out and be playing in the G-League or as a two-way player when they can make more staying in college and playing for the Houston Cougars? … It’s crazy. This is how much college athletics has changed. Now you can scratch your head and say do we really need to be spending $140M on a football facility, or should we take that money from all those donors and use it on NIL? If you talk to the college athletes today, they don’t care about that building anymore. They care about how much am I getting paid. That ought to tell what a different world we live in such a short time. Think about it, because you know what they would all tell you: Give me that money.” (link)

In the latest excerpt from The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football's Era of Chaos by Armen Keteyian and John Talty, the two report that former Maryland QB Taulia Tagovailoa was offered $1.5M to transfer to Auburn. Tagovailoa, who started his career at Alabama with his brother, Tua, “hadn't entered the transfer portal yet, but that hadn't stopped a message from making its way to him and his family that there was a lot of outside interest in his abilities,” Talty and Keteyian continue, adding: “When [Maryland AD Damon] Evans heard the rumors about Tagovailoa leaving were real, his instruction to [Terps HC Mike] Locksley was simple: We can't let him leave. On the verge of what everyone expected to be a breakout season for Maryland football, the loss of Taulia could be devastating.” Evans: "You lose your starting quarterback? You lose your starting quarterback? For a school like us that's trying to build, that's harder to overcome. Michigan State lost their starting quarterback Payton Thorne, but Michigan State is a much more established program. Some programs can overcome that, but it would have knocked us back a couple steps and we don't need that right now." While Locksley began working the phones to try and secure enough NIL funding to keep Taulia, his older brother Tua, who played for Locksley at Alabama, stepped in and told him: "We're an Alabama family. You're not going to Auburn." Taulia eventually got a six-figure deal to stay with the Terps and Locksley says: "I got a homeboy discount because we ain't paying him one point five [million]. Now, down the road, would we? Who knows how this thing's gonna shake out." Lots more. (link)

Conversations about starting the football season on Week 0 have “faded,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, though he notes that could change if viewership for the first round of College Football Playoff games, which are going head-to-head with the NFL, are subpar. One official with knowledge of the CFP discussions tells Dellenger: “If [ratings] are in the tank, it will start the whole conversation again.” Another source says: “[The NFL] purposely scheduled aggressively against us.” If the conversations do start again, Dellenger points out that moving an entire college football season up a week is easier said than done. MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, for instance, points out that he’s “been a proponent of Week 0 without moving the end date of the season. Moving championships a week is problematic for a lot of us if you’re doing your championships in NFL stadiums. You’re contracted out a ways.” There’s also the issue of convincing network partners to go along with the idea, as Dellenger notes ESPN executives have “expressed to some CFP leaders their concern over how such a move would impact television windows around the holidays.” Further, the NFL is likely to approve the addition of an 18th regular season game, and Dellenger asks: “Will Labor Day weekend remain a sacred college football safe place? Or will the NFL move up its season to align with college football’s start? There’s one way to guarantee an only-college football kickoff: Turn Week 0 into Week 1.” (link)

Former Colorado Football AC Trevor Reilly says he spent time overseas this past holiday season lobbying Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) for NIL funding. Reilly, who resigned on August 1, wrote in his resignation letter to Buffs AD Rick George and HC Deion Sanders: "The arrangement was that, because I did all the NIL work at Jackson (State) and got us through, you guys would pay me a modest salary and make me the Special Teams Coordinator, which should have freed up time for me to handle NIL activities. You paid me $90,000 a year and let me handle special teams. I did all this work in your name and was told to pursue it. I burned through all my contacts in my Mormon community, which is worth about $3 trillion. Now, I can't get these people to answer my calls because I just found out today that none of my endeavors will happen. I even went to Saudi Arabia and got a meeting with the Saudis, who were interested in pursuing business. I have email receipts to prove it, and you guys let it fall flat on its face." Reilly goes on to note he acted on his own accord, adding: “I did nothing illegal and was trying to help Colorado the best way I knew how.” (link)

Former Utah State Football HC Blake Anderson will file a lawsuit against the university and is being represented by Bearnson & Caldwell, who are preparing a complaint for breach of contract and other alleged wrongful acts taken by the university. From a release by Anderson’s attorneys: “Coach Anderson herein states publicly and with certainty that he completely denies having engaged in any wrongdoing, and looks forward to the truth and details underlying that truth being revealed through the appropriate process – in a court of law before a selected jury of his peers. … Coach Anderson, as a husband, father, coach, and leader, does not condone any type of abuse whatsoever and has always been the first to step in to prevent those behaviors and enforce accountability when these issues have arisen. Coach Anderson followed all of the proper reporting processes during his time at USU and throughout his lengthy coaching career, and has always complied with Title IX and all University policies as trained by USU and every other University where he has coached.” Anderson also notes, per On3’s Barkley Truax, that “the longer certain individuals at USU choose to drag this matter out, failing to publicly take accountability for their breach of his contract, the more damage accrues to USU’s reputation and also to Coach Anderson, whose career has been substantially harmed.” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy believes player contracts are an inevitable next step as the sands of college athletics continue to shift, telling ESPN’s Pat McAfee: "When football has success, wins 10 games, wins championships, goes to big bowl games, our enrollment goes up every year. So it drives the market. And in my opinion, football is essentially the face of the university in most cases. The money that's generated and the revenue we're making now for the players is being shared as we move forward. And what you're saying is exactly right: We can't get to the details and how to handle this in the right manner without contracts, in my opinion. … There's marketing, there's branding, there's so many things, and I really believe that college football teams are going to eventually break away and become their own company." Gundy also believes there will be an increase in the number of players who enter the portal in December “to negotiate, not necessarily trying to leave. That will be the big change. … We pay our players very well here. They have certain functions that they have to take care of to be able to get their money through the NIL concepts, but the big challenge is to get players who are not used to [the process] to say, 'Look, the negotiations are over.'” (link)

Miami (OH) Football HC Chuck Martin on losing kicker Graham Nicholson to the transfer portal over the offseason: “We didn’t lose him, he’s at Alabama. We know exactly where he’s at. Again, you media people, it’s all pretend. Alabama stole our kicker. They illegally recruited our kicker and stole him from us and that’s a fact. … We live in this la-la world, like let’s not talk reality. I don’t know why. Everybody knows what’s going on. Yeah, Alabama stole our kicker.” (link)

More from Houston President Renu Khator on the need to double the athletic department’s budget, as she reiterates that “we can’t do it on the backs of students. Of course, we can’t go back to the same 10 to 15 donors. You’ve done enough. All the burden cannot come on the shoulders of the same small group of donors. … I don’t want to just pull the rug out from under (athletics). I want to win as badly as anybody else. Our way out is not by cutting expenses. Our way out is by increasing our revenue. If we don’t think that’s where our goal should be, that means we are settling for mediocrity. And I’m not there to settle for mediocrity.” On working with new AD Eddie Nuñez, Khator says: “I’m going to sit down with Eddie, just like I do with our other vice presidents. We’ll discuss what the plan is, what the strategy is. We’re working together. We both have the same goal. I want to make sure he has the tools to be successful.” Meanwhile, Nuñez tells the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “There are things I see already that we can do a little differently. Not a big change. Just a little difference that will make it really good. I want to be able to see things. I want to understand and say, ‘Why do you do this? Why is it this way? ’ Because a fresh set of eyes are big, and that’s what I have right now.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork and President Ted Carter met with trustees this week to discuss the changes in college sports, and Bjork noted that roster limits means Ohio State will likely lose about 150 student-athletes. Carter added: “We'll still have scholarships, we'll still have programs. Some of those sports may start to look and act a little bit more like a club sport, but yet compete at the Division I level and still travel and still compete." (link)

Memphis AD Ed Scott says some hiring news is likely coming soon after the department lost several people over the past few months. “I tend to move pretty fast. So, you’ll see within the next few days, by the end of next week definitely, you’ll see some announcements about staff being hired and us filling some roles.” Scott plans on restructuring some of former Deputy AD Jeff Crane’s responsibilities among more than one person and notes: “You can’t replace the person. You can only replace the position, and Jeff had amassed a lot of stuff underneath him. A lot of different duties and personal oversight. And so for me, I’m looking at the structure, and I’m saying, ‘OK, is this really the best structure for this new iteration of college athletics?’ And so as I’m making hires and I’m looking at that, it’s a two-pronged approach. What is the right structure, and then, who are the players that can fit that structure? … Jeff was handling a lot of the legal stuff, and candidly, we’re going to keep Jeff around as a consultant-type role for a little bit. Because he’s got a lot of institutional knowledge and he had been involved in all these processes. And Jeff and I worked really well together. I honestly believe Jeff on this wholeheartedly, if it wasn’t for South Carolina where he lived and worked before, I don’t think he would have left. And I tried to retain him, candidly, because he’s got a really good skillset. He’s a nice human being, and he’s good at what he does. I want that type of talent.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips joined SportsCenter yesterday and said of the ongoing legal disputes with Clemson and Florida State: “It’s disappointing we're in this place. It’s a harmful kind of situation, but we are going to…fight. And that's the way it should be when you sign an agreement twice – willingly sign – and you are part of a group that comes together and decides that this is what you want to do for the next 20 years. And I think you should be held accountable for that. That being said, we will compartmentalize that piece of it and we will go into the football season and that’s what I'm really looking forward to. … Some of the legal conversations and some of the dynamics around these cases has taken away from the ACC, taken away [from] the incredible success that our student-athletes are having in the sport of football and across all 28 of our sports. So with the kickoff this weekend, we can maybe put the legal issues to the side and we can focus on what young men and women are doing on the competitive playing field with our fall sports.” On whether he expects a resolution via court-ordered mediation with Florida State, Phillips says the conference will continue to abide by the judge's decisions, and the direction of the talks is “for the lawyers to decide.” (link)

More from Phillips as he plans to attend this year’s Aer Lingus Classic between Florida State and Georgia Tech in Ireland after missing the last two matchups due to conference realignment activity. He tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop: “It’s so important to the league. It’s our first ACC conference game of the season, two great schools, two great football programs, a chance to play in Week 0 and really capture the majority of the country that is craving for college football. Being able to go support and show commitment to our student-athletes, coaches and schools is really important to me. … And I think you have to be present and make sure you’re at events like this. I’m honored to go, and I think it’s going to be just a tremendous experience for our schools and a great chance to showcase ACC football.” Despite the league’s legal dispute with FSU, Phillips says he’s grateful for Georgia Tech’s willingness to give up a home game and the Seminoles’ commitment to making the trip. “It would have been easy for someone to say no for a variety of good reasons. We were really able to work together collaboratively. It should just be a great opportunity for the league.” (link)

In the second of a multipart interview with 247Sports’ Carter Karels, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts talks about former Baseball HC Jim Schlossnagle’s departure, facilities upgrades, renewing the rivalry with Texas and more. On what lessons he learned from Schlossnagle’s departure: “I do not know specifically what lessons [I] learned. We are in the people business. You are dealing with people, and people have desires, goals, ambitions. They have emotions. The one thing that is important to me is, I believe that this is a place that can and does attract the highest level of administrators, coaches and others. Nobody is a hostage here, including student-athletes. If people do not want to be here, it is OK. My job is the programs and the student-athletes. That is what I am primarily focused on.” Alberts also says the Aggies are working with the 12th Man Foundation on updates to Blue Bell Park. “If we have donor support, donor interest and pledges or we have premium seats or spaces that allow us to sell those to pay debt, perfect. But just general debt service or commercial paper that adds on to the operating expenses of athletics, especially in this new iteration, are just not going to be feasible for us going forward. So we are confident. The 12th Man Foundation is confident in the ability to fulfill some of this.” More from Alberts. (link)

Xavier AD Greg Christopher joins the Sean Miller Podcast and talks with host Paul Fritschner about the state of the athletic department, including what’s happening with both basketball programs, the latest on capital projects, the impact of potential NCAA Tournament expansion and more. Christopher notes the last phase of in-arena work at the Cintas Center is in its home stretch with the Center Court Club and deck on the northeast corner set to be completed by October 1. “I’m not saying that Cintas is done at that point, with the $30M or so of work that’s been done over the last, say, seven years, but we can probably take a deep breath on what I would call major work in the building for the for the next couple of years.” With the new Big East media rights deal including content on Max and Peacock, Christopher points out the goal is to find a balance between harnessing the power of OTA networks and streamers. “There is a hard reality right now that the networks are paying more for content that goes on streaming than on the networks because the reality is they're trying to build those platforms. So, for us to turn down streaming at this point in time would have been frankly a financial hit to the conference. So it makes sense for streaming to get introduced at this point in time.” If the House settlement is approved and implemented, Christopher says since all 11 Big East members have their budgets set for this year, the conference will handle the first year’s payment. After that, the new TV contract should mitigate the $600K each school will owe in subsequent years. More from Christopher. (link)

Nevada hopes to have finalized plans for an all-sport Fieldhouse in October that would serve as an indoor football practice facility. Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe: "We are working on the design and the cost. By October, we expect to have a pretty close to shovel-ready design. And then once we know the cost and the financing, we're going to figure out a way to get that done. It is critical for our ability to make a statement about our commitment to athletics, make a statement about football, show that we can get things done. It would be a nontraditional type of build. And (we want) to show this community that's something we can get done after talking about it for 20 or 30 years." Rempe also explains the non-traditional element of the build could help get it fast-tracked. "Non-traditional meaning how we build it. We're still working through what that is like, but as long as it's kept outside of the university and you can lease it and work through all of those things, there are lots of logistics, lots of state things we have to work through. But we're pretty confident we can get it done." Rempe also provides an update on upgrades to Peccole Park, home of the Wolf Pack baseball team. "Right now, the turf has been lifted up and they're working on the drainage. … And then Tom Dolan Locker Room, so we're renovating the inside of the locker room. Those are exciting. We are still working on the Fieldhouse, too. Super excited about the progress we've made there. We'll continue to figure out how to invest in the facilities that we need as a department." (link)

OneTeam Partners and ONIT Athlete have entered into a multiyear partnership to create trading cards for thousands of athletes and integrate them into a group licensing program, according to cllct’s Matt Liberman, who notes the first to ink deals under the partnership are Iowa State, UCLA, Washington, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Penn State. Iowa State and UCLA cards are already on-presale, while Washington will go live this week, with Virginia Tech, Texas A&M and Penn State launching in early September. Student-athletes featured in the deal come from several sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, gymnastics, wrestling and more. ONIT Co-Founder Sheridan Hodson says the company is currently licensed at 96 universities across the country and adds: “We’re trying to win over every university…to work with every collegiate sport. It's important for those athletes to feel like they're getting paid their fair-market value to be part of our deals.” OneTeam’s Senior Director of College Strategy and Operations Aaron Solender says that having negotiated deals with over 12K student-athletes to use their NIL for College Football 25, they can facilitate the inclusion of those players at scale. “We can just kind of flip the switch. The more athletes we get into the program, the more opportunities we can bring to those athletes. And the more opportunities we have, the more athletes are going to want to sign on. And the flywheel keeps turning and turning.” (link)

The three largest private equity firms in the running to acquire stakes in NFL teams – Blackstone, Carlyle and Ares – have $1.9T in assets among them, according to Sportico’s Brendan Coffey, who asks why they would be interested in the comparatively small $19B up for grabs under the current proposal. Irwin Kishner, co-chair of the Sports Law Group at Herrick Feinstein, explains: “A lot of drops start coming and you get a puddle. Sports, live sports programming and gambling rights associated with that are a tremendous value proposition, where smart money sees opportunity to achieve the returns that they are looking to achieve. It’s still big numbers.” In fact, Coffey notes that over the past 20 years, the NFL’s total value has risen from $23.46B to $190B, a 710% gain. By comparison, the S&P 500 index has risen 660% the past 20 years. Not only do franchises provide outsized returns, but team values tend to be less volatile than other investments like stocks and bonds—or, in Wall Street-speak, they are more highly non-correlated with other securities, a characteristic valued by long-term investors that hand PE firms their money.” While Ares has soccer investments in Inter Miami, Olympique Lyonnais and Atlético Madrid, Blackstone and Carlyle “have barely dipped their toes into sports,” and Coffey notes: “Beyond seeking returns, Carlyle’s interest in sports could be driven by its recent aim to extend its business into private wealth management. Being able to own a sliver of an NFL franchise could have huge appeal to well-off clients who aren’t rich enough to buy into a team on their own.” More from Coffey. (link)

FuboTV Chair Edgar Bronfman Jr. has increased his bid for National Amusements and a minority stake in Paramount from $4.3B to $6B. Bronfman’s new offer includes $1.7B for a tender offer that would give non-Redstone, nonvoting Paramount shareholders an option to cash out at a premium of $16 a share, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Lauren Thomas and Jessica Toonkel, who note Bronfman’s initial bid didn’t offer Paramount’s Class B shareholders that option to cash out. They also point out that “Skydance’s $8B offer involves buying National Amusements and merging Skydance into Paramount. The deal would put $1.5B on Paramount’s balance sheet that can be used to pay down debt. Additionally, it would provide more than $4B to buy out about 50% of nonvoting Paramount shares at $15 each, or allow them to roll into the new company.” (link)
