#9: The MIAC rolls out changes to Football and Basketball scheduling and a new four-year strategic plan. On the gridiron, this year will be the league’s last with football divisions. In 2025 and 2026, the MIAC will play an eight-game conference slate, with seven regular-season games and a championship week that will see the top two teams play for the MIAC title and the third-best to play fourth-best, fifth-best to host sixth-best, etc. Starting in 2027, the league will move to a single-round robin football schedule with space for one non-conference game. On the hardwood, the conference will play a round-and-a-half conference slate on a four-year trial. “The reduced conference schedule is intended to provide better scheduling flexibility for teams to add quality non-conference games to match the needs of their programs while also allowing coaches to maintain increased autonomy over their schedules. The philosophy will be assessed by coaches and administrators midway through the four-year trial.” The strategic plan through 2027 includes five pillars – athletics, academics, well-being, integrity and inclusivity – and eight new subcommittees. Of note, the Competition Subcommittee will continue to evaluate scheduling and “Create a roadmap detailing the impact of the NCAA Power Index (NPI) and best practices to increase overall conference strength of schedule.” Also, “The New Revenue Generation Subcommittee aims to identify potential opportunities for financial partnerships, sponsorships, and advertising, while also evaluating video revenue models and ensuring transparent financial practices in the MIAC.” More. The Presidents and Management Councils reviewed all legislation for the 2025 NCAA Convention, including a membership-sponsored proposal that would align multisport conference membership size requirements with those of single-sport conferences and DIII rules related to AQ eligibility.
