Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier will earn a base salary of nearly $360K under the terms of his new contract, which runs through June 30, 2027. CollegeAD reports Frazier can earn $10K if the department’s APR is 980 or better and another $10K if the department leads the MAC in GSR. If NIU meets its APR goal, Frazier will also unlock $5K to distribute among the staff. Additionally, several bonuses will be unlocked if football and men’s and women’s basketball attendance increases by 5% or more as well as if fundraising increases by at least 5%. In addition to these and other bonuses, Frazier is in line to earn a retention bonus of $32,500 for each year he remains in the role through June 30, 2027. He’ll also receive $20K for FY24 due no later than September 1, 2027. Frazier will also be paid $15K annually for his DEI leadership. Should NIU part ways with Frazier without cause, he would be owed the remainder of his base pay. Frazier would not owe NIU a buyout should he leave for another job. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the 49-hour search for Football HC Nick Saban’s replacement and the impact that experience had on his perspective of legacy, branding and succession planning. Byrne details the process from the first moments when he began to keep mental notes on potential successors to the 13-page document his team developed and says: “The day I got hired at Alabama seven and a half years ago, I got asked 9,000 times that day, ‘What’s it feel like to be the guy that’s gonna hire Nick Saban’s replacement?’ The answer was easy: ‘We’re gonna kick that can down the road as far as we can.’ That’s what we tried to do.” Byrne also talks about the evolving needs of student-athletes in the NIL era, including how to increase the stickiness of the Crimson Tide’s brand during the recruiting process and how to provide equal opportunities for female student-athletes. “Young men and young women still want to have a connection, and one of the things I'm very proud of what we do is the way we support our holistic student-athlete at the University of Alabama. It costs a lot of money to do that, which rarely gets recognized, but they still want to have relationships with someone, have that connection. It’s probably intimidating when a 52-year-old guy comes and starts talking to them, but that's important that you do that.” More on ADU. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker talks with BlueGoldNews.com’s Greg Hunter about the changes in college sports and says: “There was a hesitancy to change, and as it stands now, we probably were violating the law – I say ‘we’ in terms of the NCAA. This settlement will put us in a difficult position. People look at what we pay coaches – and coaches do make a lot of money – but most of our sports are not solvent. There are only one or two programs (football and men’s basketball) that fund everything else. So, if you have to revenue share, it’s going to put a lot of stress on how you fund those other initiatives and how you move forward.” With so much still uncertain, Baker says it remains to be seen what schools will do to balance their budgets. “I don’t think there will be a ton of sports eliminated around the country, though I do think that the kind of experience some student-athletes get will change. I think you are going to see a strong tightening of scheduling. You could see some conference tournaments get condensed or eliminated. You could see some conferences do away with the league portion of regular-season schedules. For instance, at my previous school (North Texas), they didn’t have regular-season conference matches in tennis. That’s because we could fill up our schedule and hardly ever leave Texas.” As for the role of collectives moving forward, Baker says there is a sense among many ADs that they should be brought in-house, adding: “At a minimum, I can see our relationship growing closer and closer between us with the MAC, Country Road Trust and (multimedia partner) Learfield. Maybe someday that will be under our roof. We’ll see.” Lots more. (link)

With the September 1 deadline for the Mountain West and Pac-12 to continue their scheduling agreement in 2025 approaching, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports that “discussions are ongoing, according to sources. But we’re skeptical of swift resolution and not convinced it really matters. Although September 1 looms as a legal deadline, the Pac-12 schools are exploring all options for their schedules in 2025. Those options relieve the pressure to make a final determination by the date listed in the contract. Also, they could let the deadline pass with the Mountain West and simply create new terms for their final bridge season. (The grace period for WSU and OSU to compete as a two-team conference expires in the summer of 2026.) After all, the arrangement works well for both sides, providing quality competition without significant travel.” Meanwhile, Wilner notes that “it’s easy to envision the [Mountain West] declining an extension at the deadline, then holding out for better terms. If the Pac-12 schools can’t find an alternative scheduling arrangement — perhaps with the Big 12 — they would have no choice but to accept the terms imposed by the Mountain West. … Don’t be surprised if the two sides announce a formal extension in the next week. But there are options available for the Cougars and Beavers if the deadline comes and goes without news.” (link)

Murray State AD Nico Yantko tells the Murray Ledger & Times’ John Wright that “when I got here, there wasn’t an NIL plan. There was no plan to invest in cost and attendance, also in academic incentive money or NIL, for that matter. So, when we got here, we quickly identified a solution, along with plans and resources, to infuse into these categories because that’s the fastest way to get us competitive. … We sat down with a group of community leaders and others who play a heavy role in supporting our programs and told them that we wanted to put together a collective opportunity here that served all of our sports programs.” While men’s basketball has been the primary beneficiary of NIL efforts so far, Yantko notes: “Basketball is no more important than any other sport on our campus, but it has to eat first because it feeds everybody else. As we get those other programs going, those resources will continue to grow through ticket sales and sponsorships as we gain more competitive infrastructure.” Looking ahead, Yantko says the Racers have a “significant supporter now in the Clarksville (Tennessee) market that’s really come along in a massive way for us, some in donations and certainly on the NIL side…but you know what? You’ve got to [leave Murray and pursue possible donors]. You can’t be afraid of Lexington or Louisville. Racer Nation is worldwide!” (link)

Washington Deputy AD for External Relations Kurt Svoboda joins D1.ticker/Connect's Bryan Fischer to talk about his transition from Michigan to Washington, expanding the Huskies brand and his time at Michigan during some of the biggest storylines and how he managed communication with the staff. Svoboda also discusses what he’s told colleagues about entering the Big Ten: “In an odd way it's going to be a little bit less about those four [West Coast teams] assimilating into the Big Ten. Maybe the Big Ten’s going to have to make a bigger adjustment in terms of travel. … Prior to the four coming to the Big Ten, Big Ten travel was pretty – I don't want to say easy – but it wasn't one of the biggest concerns. And now as we think about this and engaging sleep experts, experts on health recovery, rest recovery, student-athlete health and welfare, I think that's going to be the biggest adjustment that maybe the Big Ten, the establishment institutions, need to make.” Svoboda goes on to describe his experience during Michigan’s football title run and all the noise surrounding it. “We all have the same goal no matter what school we work at: we care. … A lot of the people who are responsible for the digital channels, they see the feedback and they live it and they take it home with them at night. And so first and foremost my role was actually really as an HR practitioner and caring for my people and their families. … This is a humanistic field and we have to care about our people and so that's first and foremost.” More on Connect. While many football coaches are in favor of eliminating the spring transfer window, there continues to be concern over the legal implications. One Group of 5 coach tells CBS’ Brandon Marcello: "It won't pass. That's a lawsuit, limiting players from leaving in the spring." Another coach adds: "All it's going to take is one kid who wants to transfer in April to sue." Meanwhile, Tulane HC Jon Sumrall points out that “for first-year staffs, not having that second window is brutal. It's gonna make it more challenging for first-year staffs to get their roster right because you're already dealing with hiring a staff in December. By the time the coach gets there it's already chaos with the portal and other stuff." One Power 4 HC notes that eliminating the window will help alleviate some of the concerns over tampering in the spring: "You can coach your guys tougher in the spring knowing they can't leave. The only negative will be if you have any long-term injuries in spring practice because you can't replace them." One player agent adds: "I think it's unfair to the player. The best part of the spring portal is after a coach leaves, it gives kids a chance to give the new regime a chance." (link)

Speaking last week at the Hawgs Illustrated Sports Club luncheon, Arkansas Football HC Sam Pittman explained the difficulty of navigating the NIL world by pointing out a table of eight attendees and saying he would pay them differing amounts ranging from $50 up to $150K. "Then I'm going to let y'all get in the same room for eight hours a day and you all just have a great time. Now, multiply that by 15 and that's what I've got. ... That's the biggest fear is handling (NIL disparities)." Pittman believes revenue-sharing will help alleviate that concern for coaches, adding: “We have to have some way to get it regulated.” He also remarked that when there is potential locker room separation based on NIL issues, "it can go downhill pretty fast, but it's our job to try to get it back the other direction. But if it never starts going downhill because of the kids on the team, you're probably going to have a pretty good ball club." (link)

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes last week announced NIL deals with six Texas Tech student-athletes across multiple sports for his Mahomes Adidas Brand and as part of the launch of “Team Mahomes.” Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming notes the six athletes come from football, softball, baseball, women’s soccer, women’s basketball, and men’s golf. “The football athlete is wide receiver Micah Hudson, the highest-rated recruit in school history, and the softball athlete is ace NiJaree Canady, who signed a deal worth more than $1M with the university’s Matador Club collective to transfer from Stanford.” Fleming also observes this is the “latest in a trend of prominent athletes bringing their sponsors back to their alma maters. Blake Griffin brought Air Jordan to Oklahoma, James Harden signed with Adidas the same year Arizona State did and has continually made signature Sun Devil editions, and Stephen Curry helped bring Under Armour to Davidson.” The total dollar amount for the Team Mahomes deals have yet to be disclosed. The NCAA has delivered its official Notice of Allegations to Michigan in connection to former staffer Connor Stalions’ alleged sign-stealing scheme. According to the NOA, seven members of the 2023 Michigan football program, including current HC Sherrone Moore, are accused of violating NCAA rules. Moore is specifically cited for allegedly deleting 52 text messages from a thread with Stalions in October 2023, though the messages have since been recovered, and Moore says he looks forward to them being released, per NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach, who adds: “Moore is facing a potential Level II violation for deleting the messages, which could bring with it a significant penalty, such as a suspension, because the NCAA considers him a potential repeat violator of NCAA rules due to an earlier NCAA investigation into Michigan’s COVID-era recruiting violations. Moore worked with the NCAA to resolve his role in the case as part of a negotiated resolution.” Stalions, former HC Jim Harbaugh, former AC Chris Partridge and former Asst. Director of Player Personnel Denard Robinson are accused of committing Level I violations, as is the school itself. Former ACs Jesse Minter and Steve Clinkscale, both of whom are now with the Los Angeles Chargers, have been accused of recruiting violations unrelated to Stalions’ operation and are working with the NCAA on a negotiated resolution. Brad Beckworth and Nathan Hall, attorneys for former Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions, tell The Athletic: “This investigation has been a witch hunt from day one intended to besmirch Michigan and Coach (Jim) Harbaugh. Connor is a scapegoat in the NCAA’s ongoing quest to show that it has a purpose in today’s sports world. … The NOA says Connor’s friends and family sent him film from games they attended with tickets Connor purchased. But there is no rule against that.” The lawyers go on to contend the “only ‘scouting’ that took place in this case happened on Michigan’s campus from behind Connor’s computer.” The NOA comes two days before the release of Sign Stealer, a documentary on Netflix from Stalions’ perspective. 247Sports/CBSSports’ John Talty and journalist Armen Keteyian chat with CBS’ Jeff Glor on the duo’s new book, The Price: What It Takes to Win in College Football’s Era of Chaos, which releases August 27. The book dives into the NIL era, conference realignment, the portal, salary caps and more. Keteyian: “The fact that both Nick Saban and Jim Harbaugh, probably the two most prominent singular faces in the sport, are no longer coaching college football, that tells you something.” Also part of the segment is a chat with NCAA President Charlie Baker, who, when asked if he believes his “Project D1” could fix college football, responds: “I do think it provides a framework. And that’s important. Right now there really isn’t a framework. This would be the kind of thing where basically everyone in D1 would be signing off on it.” (link)

An unnamed Big 12 AD to The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy on the possibility of adding UConn: “(Big 12 Commissioner Brett) Yormark is going to kick every tire possible. We’re open to looking at anything. UConn is a big brand, the biggest-branded institution in the Northeast.” Per another source: “Just look at Arizona and Kansas a few years ago. There’s a huge media value up there [in the Northeast]. That’s why Yormark looks at it. [...] Keep your eye on what happens in the ACC.” (link)

Georgia Southern AD Jared Benko sits down with Collegiate Sports Connect Co-Founder/Collegiate Sports Associates President Drew Turner to talk about GSU’s current focus on resource generation, expense management, the continual enhancement of the student-athlete experience and more. Benko says when hiring people, two things are non-negotiable. “I'm not going to hire jerks, and the second thing is I won't hire people that can't communicate. So, those are prerequisites right out of the gate, and then one of the questions I always ask is, ‘Are you coachable?’” While no one bats a thousand in hiring, Benko notes that usually when things break down it’s usually some sort of breakdown in “alignment or communication or both. And alignment can also stem from being coachable and being able to communicate effectively. … And if you can get those questions answered in an earnest way, then I think you’re on the right track to hiring the right person.” Benko adds: “The one thing that really separates us is our alignment, from the presidential piece all the way down to our staff.” Full conversation on Connect. Nebraska has released a trailer for a new episode of The Place, a documentary examining the changes in college sports, including NIL, collectives, revenue sharing and more. The Place includes the perspectives of Huskers AD Troy Dannen, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, Huskers volleyball student-athlete Lexi Rodriguez, 1890 Nebraska Co-Founder Shawn Peed and more. Dannen in the trailer of the episode: “We’re in the middle of not really an evolution, but a revolution. We went decades by holding on to a model that as revenues grew and the enterprise changed, the one area that didn’t really change was how we looked at our athletes. [...] The one thing history will tell you is that those who do not embrace change quickly fall backwards in college athletics.” (link, link)

In a letter to ticket holders, Kansas AD Travis Goff announced that KU will implement a “per-seat donation model” for each individual seat in Allen Fieldhouse and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium starting next school year. The Jayhawks website explains it as “a new process in which fans will pay a transparent, total cost for each individual seat in Allen Fieldhouse and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. The total price per seat will include both the season ticket cost and required donation (also known as the per-seat donation). The per-seat cost will vary based on location at each venue. … one’s total per-seat donation amount will be combined with any other Williams Educational Fund contributions you make to determine your annual giving level, enhancing your Williams Education Fund priority ranking, which will still be used to determine your seating and parking selection priority, postseason ticket priority and grant access to many other donor benefits.” Single-game tickets will not require a per-seat donation. In light of Ohio State President Ted Carter’s recent remark that some sports “may start to look and act a little bit more like a club sport, but yet compete at the Division I level and still travel and still compete” as a result of the House settlement, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown explains: “I expect Ohio State, along with many other schools in the Big Ten, to offset scholarship additions in football, baseball and elsewhere with potentially significant cuts in scholarship offerings in other sports. That could theoretically mean that if the men’s swim team currently offers ten scholarships, in the future they might only get three. Maybe men’s track only gets two. Perhaps the men’s volleyball team doesn’t get any.” Brown also believes athletic departments will look to cut down on travel costs on which a “typical non-football or basketball team spends somewhere between $200K and $600K a year, based on the FRS reports I inspected. Don’t be shocked if the Big Ten, say, decides to stop sponsoring a few sports, or at least decides to not sponsor any regular season competition, freeing schools to schedule regionally to save money. You may also see some schools deciding to play less ambitious schedules, RPI be damned, in order to save money on flights or buses.” As for what all this means downstream, Brown wonders: “If you’re, say, Grand Canyon, or [UC] Irvine, or [Cal State] Northridge…do you take Ohio State’s retreat as a sign that a national title in men’s volleyball is more possible, and double your own investment? Would the retreat of programs like Ohio State or Penn State make a national title in men’s volleyball less meaningful and worthy of investment? Would it even remain an NCAA sport?” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Austin Peay co-OC Patrick Kugler resigned Sunday, a day after his arrest in connection to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) undercover operation into human trafficking. Govs AD Gerald Harrison: “It’s disappointing when you have things like that, these aren’t issues you plan for or anticipate happening. I’m really proud of (head) coach (Jeff) Faris and how he’s handled the crisis and has been able to pivot quickly. We have a standard here, that kind of situation does not meet our standard, regardless of where this goes. And we want to surround our student-athletes with the best possible people. We’ve turned the page.” (link)

+ Purdue Fort Wayne Women’s Basketball HC Maria Marchesano agrees to a contract extension through the 2029-30 season. (link)
+ Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin’s contract, which was automatically extended by one year on Dec. 8, 2023, will pay him $9M annually from 2025 onward. In 2024, he'll receive $8.85M and a retention bonus of $150K if he remains in charge of the Rebels on Dec. 31, 2024. If Kiffin leaves the Rebels before December 31 of this year, he will owe the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation $4M. That figure decreases by $1M annually until Jan.1, 2027, when it levels off at $1.5M. Kiffin is under contract through Dec. 31, 2029. If Kiffin is let go without cause, Ole Miss would owe him 80% of his remaining salary. That total, were he let go after the 2024 season, would be over $36.5M. Kiffin’s contract automatically extends by one year if the Rebels win seven or more regular season games. If he doesn't win seven games, the contract still extends as of Dec. 8, though both Kiffin and the Ole Miss Athletic Foundation have the option to forego that extension. If Kiffin's automatic contract extension is triggered, as of Dec. 8 of each year, his buyout rises to nearly $44M. Kiffin’s buyout states he has no duty to mitigate. (link)

Both Texas AD Chris Del Conte and Texas A&M boss Trev Alberts are open to moving their football matchup to Black Friday, with Del Conte saying: “There’s three NFL windows [on Thanksgiving]. For me, if it was up to my druthers, I’d like to play it on Friday night. It’d be great, unencumbered. The only game, the only show you think about from coast to coast. A Friday night game would be spectacular.” Alberts adds: “What I’m most in favor of is ‘What window do we own the best, particularly in prime time?’ I would not be surprised if, in the future, the game moves to Friday night. Obviously, we’ll work with our television partners. … the NFL has gotten more involved in different windows. We want this to be the premier prime time window.” (link)

The SEC and Big Ten could account for more than 50% of all TV viewership this football season, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi. In fact, iSpot.tv VP of Sports Research and Insights David Coletti tells Crupi the SEC and Big Ten last season would have accounted for 57.2% of the sport’s share of viewing upon inclusion of their new member schools. Even without the new members, the two leagues still combined to garner 43.5% of viewership while the ACC and Big 12 accounted for 28.3% of all the college football minutes that were consumed in 2023. Crupi goes on to point out that “in keeping with Texas’ big reach, the Longhorns are among the priciest draws on the college football menu, as the average cost of a 30-second in-game spot during their national broadcasts is over $70K a pop. Pair the ‘horns up against the likes of Michigan, as Fox will do in their flagship noon window on Sept. 7, and scatter units are fetching more than $125K a throw. Those nosebleed rates aren’t simply a function of realignment fever; the two programs haven’t faced each other since Texas prevailed over Michigan by a score of 38-37 in the 2005 Rose Bowl.” (link)

UNLV is considering selling the 69-acre Sam Boyd Stadium site to Clark County for $5M. The potential transaction will be discussed at next month’s Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents meeting, but the school hopes to finalize the deal within six months. If the transaction is successful, UNLV would use the funds to boost infrastructure, student financial aid and support programs. The Rebels played at Sam Boyd as a “stadium user” until 1985, when the county transferred ownership to UNLV at no cost, though the university reported spending around $20M to renovate the stadium. UNLV reported $500K in operation and maintenance costs for the stadium in 2023-24 though the Rebels have played at Allegiant Stadium since 2020. In 2022, the county offered $3.2M for the land so the school commissioned multiple third-party appraisals, including one in April 2023 that came back at $10.4M. Clark County had its own third-party appraisal done, which valued the land at $0. (link)

The Syracuse David B. Falk College of Sport & Human Dynamics will become the David B. Falk College of Sport in 2025 as part of a reorganization that will make it the first standalone college on an R1 campus to focus exclusively on sports-related disciplines. The news comes in conjunction with the college launching an exclusive two-year partnership with Women Leaders in Sports. The joint agreement names Women Leaders CEO Patti Phillips as special advisor to Falk College Dean Jeremy S. Jordan as well as the college’s Executive in Residence. The collaboration also calls for an exchange of relevant University research and co-creates a Women Leaders in Sports Fellowship. Jordan: “Falk College is creating exceptional experiential learning opportunities for future sport professionals. Women’s roles in sports are growing exponentially as they lead traditional male and female teams, engage larger audiences, earn new sponsorships, and gain greater media attention than ever before. This partnership integrates our students and faculty with the outstanding work of Women Leaders in Sports and guides us as we develop programming and curriculum to meet the needs of this dynamic field.” (link)
