SBJ’s Ben Portnoy caught up with more than 50 administrators, commissioners and industry sources about how the dominoes that began falling with the SEC’s addition of Oklahoma and Texas three years ago have set the stage for the current football season. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey remarks: “I think what’s happened [since] validates our decision-making. And, in some ways, magnifies our strength. … The announcement created turmoil and turbulence for people. Obviously, it created a need for the Big 12 to adjust, [but] I’m certain there were other conferences reaching out. So, for all of those who want to be critics, I’m quite certain that even before the leak about their interest in the SEC, there was outreach to those two universities taking place, and I don’t feel the need to apologize for the growth.” As the sands began shifting nationwide, Oregon AD Rob Mullens says the Ducks “immediately got some inbounds from the other Big 12 members concerned about the stability of their league and seeking a place inside the Pac-12 at that time. And then we started making sure that we understood our own positioning, that we understood where Oregon athletics was, and we began a little bit deeper work on that front.” The ripples stretched well past the then-Power 5 and into the Group of 5 ranks and beyond, and Loyola Chicago AD Steve Watson observes: “You worry about the public perception of making a move like [Texas and Oklahoma did]. And it was almost like moving conferences was more accepted, and it was OK. I think people started to understand that the schools are going to look for the best fit for them.” Lots more. (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy continues by examining the financial consequences of realignment and notes that in anticipation of its potential move to the Big 12, Cincinnati invested a combined $90M in its football and basketball venues, increased recruiting budgets from $578K to $1.75M between 2020 and 2023, and hired numerous staffers to better equip the department for the Big 12. Bearcats AD John Cunningham: “I always said that we would get the invite when it made sense for a Power Five conference to give us the invite. And it did at that moment [in 2021], and luckily, we had invested the right way up to that point to make that happen.” While the landscape continues to be murky, Murray State AD Nico Yantko remarks: “The variables have changed. But in the wake of the House settlement, starting to understand where the opt-in opportunities exist, I feel a lot better today than I did two months ago, because two months ago we didn’t know what direction we were running. Right now, we know where we’re going.” (link)

If the vote were to happen today, six Big 12 schools are in favor of adding Connecticut while two are against, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who notes: “Only three more schools out of the remaining eight, then, would be needed to scuttle the move; however, a formal vote on the issue is not imminent.” One person familiar with Monday’s presentation to the presidents tells Dodd: “Nothing was even remotely close to being decided.” Dodd also points out that Fox is against the move. “Adding UConn to the Big 12 would not only devalue the Big East's contract that Fox completed just two months ago, it would also require amending the Big 12 contract. … Sources indicate ESPN, the other Big 12 partner in the current media rights deal, would support the move. The cable giant may be interested because it doesn't have UConn basketball among its rights. ESPN was an early partner with the Big East when the league exploded nationally in the 1980s.” Also from Dodd: “None of the current discussions have anything to do with the league's ongoing consideration of public equity money, sources told CBS Sports. That prospective PE partner, CVC, has told the Big 12 it projects its media rights will at least double by 2031.” (link)

U.S. Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) passed away last week at the age of 87, and Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes the the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight “had a different financial interest in intercollegiate athletics: finding new ways to tax it.” Pascrell last year told Libit: “Americans should care about these excessive salaries to college coaches that our federal tax code is helping to fund. Universities’ tax-exempt status is an important pillar of our cherished higher education system, but it is not a blank check to dole out huge coaching contracts with lavish benefits.” Pascrell also said that if Democrats retake the House of Representatives in the coming election, one of his “priorities” would be to “explore” tax reforms that directly addressed college coaching compensation. Libit reports the reforms included “subjecting certain, big-dollar athletic departments to the unrelated business income tax (UBIT) and ensuring that the existing excise tax on millionaire non-profit officials extended to cover state universities.” With Pascrell’s passing, it remains unclear whether another lawmaker will champion the cause. Georgia AD Josh Brooks and Clemson AD Graham Neff talk about their friendship, which they say will be put on hold when the Dawgs and Tigers square off to open the football season this weekend. Neff: “We’ll see how the results fall. I would tell you that however the outcome goes, the team or the school on the losing end will remind our head coaches that the prior ADs actually scheduled this game. … If we or he were to win, we’ll probably take credit for scheduling the game.” Brooks says the two first met in 2017 when UGA made its first trip to the College Football Playoff and consider each other to be among their closest friends in the industry. Brooks: “He’s a great person, a great colleague, someone you can bounce ideas off of. We had a similar journey coming up. … We can be very open with each other. We’re respectful of each other’s jobs but helpful in sharing the right information that can be useful to learn from each other.” Neff adds: “We’re both kind of younger dudes, his AD job was the year before mine, we were both deputies together. It’s stitched together for quite some time. It’s pretty cool.” Brooks goes on to say: “These jobs can be lonely. When you’re sitting in this chair, you need friends who are sitting in similar chairs that are going through the same challenges you are. You can just discuss ideas or just commiserate sometimes.” (link)

Memphis AD Ed Scott understands there is still a getting-to-know-you process when it comes to fundraising for the Tigers and tells The Daily Memphian’s Frank Bronner II: “People don’t know me yet. They know the persona, the press conference and all that. If they’re going to give money to the athletic department, in my experience, people give money for two reasons: to people because they trust they’re going to do something good with their money, or they give to causes that they really believe in. I want to do both of those. … So most of my conversations with donors and about money right now are about who I am, what my values are, what I believe, and how we’re going to use the money that they give us to support us to better the plight for our student-athletes. And I think when you take that approach, people feel better (than) you just going in and talking about dollars and cents all the time, at least in my experience.” Scott says fundraising for Liberty Stadium upgrades have continued its positive momentum and credits former Tigers/current Missouri AD Laird Veatch and former Tigers Deputy AD Jeff Crane for building a solid base. “I think folks are starting to get comfortable that I’m coming in trying to get us there, not trying to derail that. And that’s really been the message.” While he disagrees with the notion of a revenue-sharing cap for the AAC, Scott does endorse the idea of potentially establishing a minimum. “It’s kind of like Poker, right? You don’t got to have the biggest stack at the table to win the tournament, but you’ve got to have enough to get in the game. So from that standpoint, I like where his mindset is.” (link)

Memphis is also in the process of finalizing a two-year extension of its lease agreement with the FedExForum. Tigers AD Ed Scott says the planned FedExForum renovation project is the main reason for the short-term extension: “We both agreed (it) would make the most sense for both sides fiscally. Because, what it’ll do, it’ll allow us to figure out what these renovations are going to look like.” Scott also says there will be a change to the attendance-based guaranteed payment clause through which Memphis would receive $800K for each season the Tigers drew an average actual attendance of 10K or more for home games. If that number was less than 6K in any season, Memphis would not have received a guaranteed payment. Scott: “You’ll see something a little different about the gate. It won’t be attributed to the gate the same way it was before. Less about us hitting certain numbers and more about us probably giving them a certain amount and getting a certain amount from them.” Last season, Memphis averaged 6,827 tickets scanned at the turnstiles in 17 games. Scott intends to sign a long-term lease agreement, “but I wanted to make sure that both sides feel good about it, and I thought the best way to do it was to get through a two-year extension. You know, give us a gap so we can make some more informed decisions moving forward.” (link)

New Orleans AD Tim Duncan explains his decision to return to Memphis: “First of all, I love the University of New Orleans. It was my first Division I AD job, and it has been all that I could’ve wanted. It was going to take something very special for me to leave New Orleans. Memphis is that special.” Duncan goes on to say he’s known Tigers AD Ed Scott for a while, and “I’ve watched and admired what he’s accomplished in this business from afar for probably the last 10 years. I was happy when he called. But the more we talked about the job and our philosophies, it became obvious that mine are aligned with his. … It takes a secure leader to bring in someone who has a history at a place you’re new at. He’s secure in his own skin, so I respect that more than anything.” Scott says: “Tim is a guy I trust. He can build culture. For me, I said it in my press conference, I’m all in on Memphis. It was less important that somebody was from Memphis, most important that they wanted to be here at Memphis and they believe in the vision.” Duncan goes on to note: “The great challenge (for us) is being in a conference that is our rightful place with our peers. That challenge is what drives me. I believe in (Scott’s) vision that we can get there. Seeing the explosion of football, the continued growth in men’s basketball, women’s basketball and soccer. We have new softball leadership. … I’m fired up and ready to go.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish are back with the latest Candid Coaches series, this time asking men’s basketball coaches whether a woman will be a DI MBB HC before 2030. Of those polled, 62% said yes and 38% said no. One coach who voted yes says: “More women are coaching now. You don't see as many assistants on the men's side, but head coaches, they're going to come from the WNBA and there's more popularity and more ADs are going to take a chance on hiring. They're starting off as DOBOs now. I was looking at maybe hiring one when I was a head coach. That's the way it's going." Another remarks: "I honestly could see it, but at a low-major. Someone that wants to get clicks and a big media response. I just don't see the blue bloods doing something like this." Of the no votes, one coach says: "We aren't that far away from 2030 and there aren't many (female) assistant coaches. It would take a really progressive AD or outside-the-box thinker to hire a woman, like a current head coach having a lot of success." Another: "Is this something a woman would even want to do? Hard for me to see both a school and a woman being willing to make this a reality.” More responses from coaches. (link)

The new two-minute warning in college football did not add any extra TV timeouts during Week 0, according to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, who acknowledges that while it may have seemed otherwise to fans, the week “just had some unusual games.” For instance, Vannini notes Georgia Tech and Florida State “played a quick game with long drives, lots of runs and just seven possessions per team. Per statistician Brian Fremeau, the 14 total possessions were the fewest in any FBS game since 2020. As a result, three TV timeouts were crammed into the final two minutes of game time: one for the two-minute warning and two for Florida State timeouts stopping the clock. That is annoying for viewers, teams, fans in the stadium, everyone. But it wasn’t unusual or different from the past. … As the season wears on, perhaps the two-minute warning’s contribution to game flow will be more obvious in pass-heavy games with lots of possessions. This change is designed to prevent back-to-back commercial breaks, which even the broadcasters dislike. So when we hit the two-minute warning next Saturday, know you’re not getting extra commercials. You’re just getting the normal annoying amount.” (link)

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee has announced its official roster for the 2024 Paralympic Games, which includes 69 former, current and incoming student-athletes with connections to NCAA championship sports and Emerging Sports for Women. A total of 116 athletes — more than 50% of U.S. Paralympians on the 2024 roster — competed in college on their way to Team USA, including those who played club sports and non-NCAA championship sports, as well as athletes who competed at the junior college level and in the NAIA. In all, 90 schools will have one or more Paralympic athletes competing in Paris. Of the 90 schools, 69 are NCAA schools that span 42 conferences and all three divisions. When considering all collegiate sport organizations, six U.S. teams have at least 50% collegiate participation on their U.S. Paralympic rosters: paratriathlon (58%), powerlifting (50%), rowing (100%), swimming (61%), track and field (71%) and wheelchair basketball (92%). Penn State AD Patrick Kraft agrees to an extension through June 30, 2032. The deal has an AAV of $2.26M, and Kraft can earn up to $350K in bonuses “based on attainment of specific goals, including for academic and competitive excellence.” PSU worked with consulting firm Segal to conduct a nationwide competitive market analysis of DI ADs’ compensation to determine a competitive compensation level. President Neeli Bendapudi: “Pat is an extraordinary leader who brings valuable insight and strategic direction to Athletics and the University, with a focus on both athletic and academic success for Penn State’s more than 800 student-athletes. This new contract will help ensure Penn State continues to benefit from Pat’s leadership for years to come.” (link)

Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich covers several topics with CaneSport, including the current legal dispute between the ACC and Florida State and Clemson: “I understand where Florida State and Clemson are coming from with relation to the questions they have. The conference said we are going to protect our entire membership and are going to be very diligent in doing that. All of those things will take care of themselves. We are now in a position where we are competing, out of the summer when everyone was looking at different things. We look forward to competing with Florida State, with Clemson. They are valuable members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.” Radakovich also says the U has “pivoted a little bit” on construction of a new football complex: “The football operations center is still the thing we want to get done long-term. We are extending the Indoor Practice Facility, creating a new weight room, are looking forward to getting that done, have some dirt moved and early packages done this fiscal year. The things that will help our student athletes get better whether it’s weight room or expanding the IPF, we’re going to try to get those done first.” Might the Canes add a softball program? “There’s been a lot going on in the last few months so we decided to make sure we are really good where we are program-atically before we take that next step and add another program.” On Acting President Joe Echevarria’s relationship with the athletic department: “He is incredibly involved, incredibly supportive…he understands the value our athletic program can bring to the entire University.” (link)

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt says it remains unclear whether the department will increase scholarships post-House telling the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: "The answer is I don't know yet. We're talking about that and [funding 105 football scholarships] could definitely be a scenario. … There are other consequences and things that we need to think through before we give our coaches green lights to grow their roster and grow their scholarship budgets. It's got to be a comprehensive plan, from revenue share to growth of scholarships and continued compliance with certain regulations." Those regulations, Hocutt explains, include “Title IX stipulations that we've got to continue to be mindful of. We cannot just automatically grow our scholarship support for our men's sports and think we can't do the same for our women's sports. We've also got to be aware of just total investment. … Does revenue share fit in the financial-aid bucket, which Title IX talks specifically about? My personal opinion is it doesn't, but at some point in time, that's going to have to be (resolved). Unfortunately, I think litigation is going to be required to provide some clarity, or Congress is going to have to make a decision or Judge Wilken is going to have to make an opinion as to how Title IX touches the revenue-share bucket, if it does.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini spoke with reporters today about several issues, including facilities improvements this year. “We’re seeing a number of donors step up in a time of transition and opportunity. It’s about the items we’ve had on our list and getting them done as we move into the Big 12.” Rossini also talked about the inclusivity of all the sports, saying: “It’s a fine line but we’re collecting a lot of information. It’s an understanding of what you need to be successful and what we can do later. We’re doing that so we can be mindful of all sports at ASU.” On NIL: “I’m very proud of our evolution in the last 8-9 months. We have a number of passionate Sun Devils leading the charge in how impactful the NIL can be for our athletes. There’s a number of kids around the country that want to be a Sun Devil for the right reasons, and I’m very excited that people have stepped up and put their money where their mouth is.” On the exposure ASU received via French swimmer Leon Marchand during the Paris Olympics: “It was incredible. We’re so proud of our 24 Olympians that represented us at Paris. When you look at LA hosting in 2028 and sainting our presence is important. We want to bring more attention after what happened at the Olympics back to campus this year.” Rossini also indicated he’s excited about the Big 12 schedule facing the Sun Devils: “We welcome the tough slate in front us. We have a group that’s here to compete, and Coach Dillingham is very deliberate with who he brought in. We want to be battle tested. We don’t want to ease in, we want to know where we’re at.” Moving forward, Rossini says alumni “will continue to be a part of our strategy. We have almost 1M alumni all over the world that we’ve connected with. With our athletic alumni, I don’t think we can do enough. There are success stories all across the landscape, and celebrate their success. We’re looking across all 27 sports at how we can connect the players and alumni.” (link)

Given the unprecedented changes occurring within the industry, the AP’s Ralph Russo asks why the Big 12 is in a rush to add Connecticut, “a school that has conceded it needs six years to get its football program Big 12-ready?” The league would need 12 of its 16 to greenlight the addition of a new member, and Russo reports: “According to several people familiar with the situation who spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private, [Commissioner Brett] Yormark still has convincing to do among his members that adding UConn is a sound move and the Big 12 needs to act fast. The apprehension is understandable. … The paint has not even dried on Yormark’s last renovation project and he is calling for the contractors again.” Even if Yormark is right that basketball is undervalued, Russo notes the conference’s current media contract runs through 2031. … Yormark was rebuked by his membership when he was interested in adding Gonzaga. UConn makes more sense, but is no slam dunk. And there might be more important business to attend to.” (link)

Meanwhile, the Big 12 unveils the “What’s Next” campaign, which celebrates the conference’s expansion to 16 teams and further introduces a new look and feel as part of the Big 12's brand refresh. The brand anthem is voiced by Grammy nominated duo and UnitedMasters' artists, Earthgang. Commissioner Brett Yormark: "Our ‘What's Next’ campaign, in partnership with Translation, will continue to elevate the Big 12 as an innovative brand that transcends traditional college sports. This enhanced look and feel of the Big 12 Conference will resonate across the country as we continue to grow as a conference of 16 iconic institutions." (link). Watch it here. (link)

CBS’ Richard Johnson takes a look at how collectives handle paying student-athletes who are injured and observes that “as is the case with many cases in the collective world, it runs the gamut. One Power 4 collective official told CBS Sports that their contracts don't have anything in them related to performance, and that they stick strictly to the deliverables such as appearances in the community or social media posts. Another former Power 4 collective official told CBS Sports the most popular plan to handle injuries in the industry is to not have a plan at all, ‘which continues to shock me.’ It echoes one NIL agent who said he'd never seen an injury clause in a deal. … To the extent such language does exist in a contract, there are ways collectives attempt to protect themselves on the front end with vague language. For instance, if an athlete's marketability is ‘impaired,’ payment could be stopped. One could argue a lot of things could fall into the bucket of impairment, including injury.” One NIL agent tells Johnson: "If I'm representing an athlete, and I see [a clause like that] in there, the first thing I'm doing is I'm asking to have it removed, because I'm not having my athlete waive their payments on the off chance that they happen to get hurt in a contact sport.” Some contracts include more direct language about injuries or legal incidents that occur off-campus; however, Johnson notes trying to force such clauses would be “horrific public relations and overall recruiting strategy for a collective.” One option for both collectives and players involves working with insurance companies such as Players Health, which works with 40-50 universities. Their basic liability insurance offers “backstops up to $25K of value with policies that can be purchased by either a collective or an athlete themself if the athlete missed more than 25% of their playing season after an injury that happens in a practice or game.” More from Johnson. Athletes First, a sports agency that includes NFL QBs Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott as clients, will travel to 10 college football rivalry games this season as part of its new Tailgate Tour to recruit clients. The events will feature outdoor entertainment, meet-and-greets with former and current football stars, exclusive merchandise and food, and CEO Brian Murphy tells Sportico’s Eric Jackson: “The representation game has changed completely, so we have to change what we do. Doing what we’ve always done won’t work. … We want to show the brands that Athletes First can be a one-stop shop” for representation, branding, marketing and content creation. The tour will make its first stop in Atlanta for this weekend’s matchup between Clemson and Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where clients such as former UGA star Sony Michel and former Clemson All-American and current Atlanta Falcons cornerback AJ Terrell are expected to make appearances. Other stops include Baton Rouge, La., where the company can touch base with clients including LSU head coach Brian Kelly. (link)
