NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma talks about the organization’s opposition to the House settlement and tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “This is an unjust settlement that would not only harm current athletes but future college athletes who are only in fourth grade. It could even affect children who aren’t even born yet because the lawyers can agree to extend the terms of this settlement without limits.” He adds of House plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler, with whom he has long worked on players’ rights issues: “[Kessler] has done a lot of great work in the past on issues in and around college sports, but we don’t agree with this settlement and our goal is to do what we can to stop it and give the lawyers another bite.” Asked whether the NCPA would take up this matter in court, Huma says: “We are exploring all options.” (link); CBS’ Dennis Dodd: “Still wondering why [the NCPA] did not file a legal objection. Also, a week away from possible approval I can't find a consensus among observers. Administrators on the ground believe approval is a slam dunk. Others not so sure.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel covers several topics with Fox 2 Detroit’s Charlie Langton, including the pending House settlement. Manuel notes he has no problem with revenue-sharing, but “kids transferring every year, free agency in and of itself every year – I don't think that's very good for the game or for them. We talk about the value of the Michigan degree long-term for your life, and the commitment that Michigan makes to you as a graduate, and the commitment that you will have lifetime from alums around the world. And so for us, we sell that." With his five-year contract up in 2025, Manuel says he would “absolutely” like to remain in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future. “I mean, where else am I going to go? This is the best job in the country, and this place means so much to me. I just put everything I can into it and help to drive the success, and watch it and observe it and cheer and do what's necessary for us to continue our success." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner examines Washington’s financial hurdles as a Big Ten member and observes: “Combine the Huskies’ existing debt with a spike in expenses related to new NCAA rules and a partial share of Big Ten media revenue and, well, and the math looks formidable. … If the math isn’t right, are the Huskies in the Big Ten the equivalent of what WSU was in the (former) Pac-12 — an athletic department forced to scrap and claw and hope, forever on the edge?” Huskies AD Pat Chun says: “It’s a different math equation for our campus. We’ll start from the premise that our past, present and future dictate that Washington has always been at the highest levels of benefits and services provided to athletes, so that will continue. How we fund it is where we’re going to have to put the work in.” All told, Wilner points out, UW will be $180M “behind the likes of Purdue, Minnesota and Rutgers for the rest of the decade” while costs, particularly via the possibility of revenue-sharing, will continue to rise, and Wilner asks: “Exactly how will the Huskies muster the resources needed to compete with USC, Ohio State and Michigan? Any school that doesn’t max out on revenue sharing with athletes stands to get obliterated in recruiting.” Chun: “We’ll have a plan, and we’ll execute on that plan — we don’t have a choice. Historically, we’ve always funded at the highest levels of college athletics, and every school in this conference is going to fund at the highest level. I don’t see a scenario where we aren’t funding at the highest levels. … The term I’ve used with our staff is, there’s a pathway for us to get there. Because we’re at a half-share and because every campus has its own challenges, our pathway is going to be unique to us.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini says he wants feedback from tailgaters this football season as ASU continues to improve the fan experience. “I’m a big believer that food is the experience anchor, and we want to talk a lot more about tailgating this season. We’re gonna be out in the lots ourselves this weekend just interacting with tailgaters, getting feedback on that experience.” Part of ASU’s efforts to restore the faith among fans involves reducing the cost of on-campus parking at football games from $40 to $20 and reducing the price of bottled water by half for the first game of the season. "We're moving in a new direction. Are we there yet? Absolutely not. We have a lot of work to do. … I want the Sun Devils to be something that I'm proud to be associated with again. Giving us these insights that are very informative to the decisions that we're making, there hasn't been a better use of the time that I've been able to spend over the last three months, but the energy we're getting back in return, the energy that we're starting to feel around the community, I find it palpable.” (link, link)

In the final installment of the Candid Coaches series this year, CBS’ Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish ask coaches whether the NCAA Tournament should remain at 68 teams or expand to 72 or 76. Results are fairly even with 38% in favor of expanding to 76, 35% preferring to remain at 68 and 27% voting to expand to 72. One coach who wants to remain at 68 says: "If high-majors can't get at-larges based off that, c'mon, man. Y'all got all the money, all the resources, 15 staff members. If you still can't make the tourney, that's your fault, not the committee." Another adds: “It's hard as hell to make it. I did it as a player. It's such a finite line that you have to be perfect down the stretch and into March to make it. We won our [mid-major] league, but we knew the only way to make it was to win the tournament and it took an overtime fadeaway 3 at the buzzer to get there. It was earned and that's the way it should be if you're not a Power Five. It's a very special 68 with 68 different stories.” One who voted for 72 remarks: “Expand. Too many subjective variables in selecting bubble teams. We've expanded Division I so we should expand the tournament. Every time the tournament has expanded there's been naysayers. It hasn't hurt it. It helped it." A 76er notes: “As a mid-major coach, I think the more access we have the better. I know the high-major teams will take most of the additions, but I'd rather fight for a spot or two than stay with the current model. As someone who has played in the NCAA tourney and coached in it, I hate the venom out there toward expansion. There is no better experience than playing in the NCAA tournament and what comes with it. We should all want more of that for our players." More. (link)

CBS/247Sports’ John Talty catches up with several stakeholders in the NIL world, including agents, collective leaders and football staffers, to get a sense of which programs went all-in on NIL this offseason, and identifies Miami (FL), Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas as the biggest spenders. Talty writes of the Hurricanes: “Miami was one of the most aggressive schools out of the gate when NIL first became legal with John Ruiz becoming an early face of the outsized influence boosters can have in this new era. Miami isn't nearly as reliant on Ruiz now and has built a strong operation that can go out and win a top priority like [QB Cam] Ward. On the Buckeyes: “After losing three consecutive games to archrival Michigan and watching the Wolverines win it all last season, Ohio State faithful were eager and willing to open up their checkbooks to try to ensure the Buckeyes could enjoy a similar fate at the end of the 2024 season. Spending a lot of money, of course, guarantees nothing but Ohio State's roster looks as talented as it's ever been under head coach Ryan Day and that's a testament to its aggressive talent acquisition.” More from Talty. Howard Football HC Larry Scott was unhappy with Rutgers’ last-play rushing touchdown in a game the Scarlet Knights won 44-7 last night, leading to a brief exchange between him and Scarlet Knights HC Greg Schiano after the game. Scott declined to reveal what he said to Schiano but noted: “I think we're both two competitive people. And in that situation, I would choose to handle it a little bit differently. I can't speak for him. I have a lot of respect for Coach Schiano, what he's done and what he's been able to do. But we're both competitive. And in that situation, you know, just a little bit of frustration came out because I thought it would have been handled differently. But he might as well." Schiano defended the decision: “Guys practiced all training camp. They deserve to play. There was no running it up. If it was running it up, you don't use timeouts when you have the ball. You let the game end. That wasn't retaliatory. We were going to run plays. We bring a team in here to play us. We bring them here. We bring them in, we've got to win and we've got to get reps. And they were there, we took them." (link, link)

Two Ohio lawmakers have filed a new bill seeking to remove NIL hurdles for colleges and universities in the state. The new bill would allow schools to work directly with student-athletes and collectives to eliminate some of the barriers to compensation. The bill also adds protections for universities and employees by declaring no state institution or employee “of higher education, private college or supporting foundation is liable for any damages that result from a student-athlete’s inability to earn compensation for use of the student-athlete’s name, image or likeness.” Representative Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) explains: “We’re working, after looking at other states, especially down in the SEC states, what we can do to get rid of red tape, legislative issues and legal problems so that our student athletes can succeed.” Representative Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) adds: “Players are going to be paid no matter what. Our universities should not have to jump through these extra hoops that they’re having to jump through to ensure that our athletes are receiving the compensation that they deserve. … I think everyone openly admits this gray area exists. [Ohio State has] always sided on the side of caution. I think they’ve done a great job in doing that. And I think every university in Ohio right now is interpreting these laws differently.” (link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “I haven’t seen the bill yet, but sounds like it will allow schools to directly pay NIL compensation to athletes & to fund 3rd parties that pay athletes (collectives).” (link)

ESPN has phased out the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” moniker from its official publications since 2018. As Chairman Jimmy Pitaro noted earlier this week: “I’ve asked people not to use it. I don’t think it’s representative of the culture here. … Others can refer to us as a leader. That’s great, and we take a lot of pride in leading, but referring to ourselves that way always felt a bit off.” Pitaro also takes issue with referring to ESPN as a network, citing its multimedia presence on digital and social platforms, and ESPN EVP of Finance, Research, Strategy and Office of the Chairman Chara-Lynn Aguiar says: “We’ve consistently adapted and innovated to evolve with sports fans and lead the charge in how they interact with sports digitally.” (link)

Northwestern President Michael Schill: "Mark has been extraordinarily successful at Villanova in supporting students' athletic and academic achievements. I am fully confident in Mark's ability to lead Northwestern Athletics to new heights and am excited to see how he will transform our program." (link)

Tennessee extends AD Danny White’s contract through July 31, 2030. UT Chancellor Donde Plowman: "When Danny says he and his team of exceptional athletics administrators and coaches are working to build the best athletics department in the country, those are not just empty words. Danny is visionary — a leader in our conference and across the country — and is focused every day on creating the very best experiences for our student-athletes, our fans and our athletics department. That focus and commitment are yielding extraordinary results across all sports." As part of the extension, White’s base salary will increase immediately from $2.2M to $2.75M, and he will continue to receive the same 5% annual increase from his original contract. Performance incentives include, but are not limited to: 5% of his base salary for a department APR of 985 or higher; 3% for a department-wide multiyear APR average of 950 or higher; 9% for finishing in the top 10 of the Learfield Directors’ Cup standings; 7% for finishing 11-24; 5% for finishing 25-40; 2% for team SEC regular season or postseason championships; and 4% for team national championships. White’s bonuses max out at $600K. According to the Knoxville News-Sentinel’s Adam Sparks, White is now the highest-paid public university AD in the country and could earn over $4M in salary and maxed out bonuses during the final year of his contract. The National College Players Association (NCPA) announces its opposition to the House settlement, taking particular exception with the agreement’s design to scale back the millions of dollars flowing to student-athletes from collectives. NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma: “Shutting down the money from collectives is a central part of the settlement and is an attempt at allowing colleges to re-monopolize booster money. Before NIL, boosters could only pay the colleges to try to give their favorite program an advantage. The colleges want that money back. … The NCPA will work to get this settlement rejected so that parties can come up with a fair settlement or go to trial.” Per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, the NCPA believes that the settlement allows the NCAA, conferences and schools to collude to ban revenue sharing if employment arrives in college athletics — an inevitability, some believe; does not require schools to share any revenue; replaces full athletic scholarships with the ability for schools to offer partial scholarships; and positions the conferences and NCAA to abolish collectives that are distributing millions of NIL-related dollars to athletes. Meanwhile, Dellenger observes that “in interesting timing, OneTeam Partners, which has partnered with thousands of college athletes for group NIL deals, distributed a letter earlier this week to college football players encouraging them to join the NCPA. The letter, obtained by Yahoo Sports, states that if players join the NCPA, ‘you can expect to be kept up to date on critical developments through the NCPA’s membership newsletter and have opportunities to lead on important issues relevant to collegiate athletics.’” (link)

Atlanta will host the 2031 Men’s Basketball Final Four. The city was scheduled to host the 2020 Final Four, which was canceled due to COVID. NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt: “The cancellation of the 2020 tournament, including the Men’s Final Four in Atlanta, was a necessary yet devastating decision for student-athletes, coaches and fans. It significantly impacted the Association and its membership, as well as the city of Atlanta, which has repeatedly been a terrific host to the event. The committee has been empathetic in its consideration of replacing the 2020 Men’s Final Four for Atlanta, and ultimately the city competed favorably and won the opportunity to host again at long last in 2031. We are looking forward to working with the Atlanta team to provide another memorable Men’s Final Four experience.” (link)

More from freshly minted George Washington AD Michael Lipitz’s introductory presser, during which he said to donors who have been quiet over the last few years: “We cannot achieve all that we are capable of achieving without you. So you will be hearing from me, and when I call your number, be ready to get off the bench and into the game. … We’re going to do things by the rules. We’re going to color within the lines, but we’re going to be aggressive in terms of generating revenue to support our student-athletes, first and foremost, in turn, to get the best talent to Foggy Bottom so our teams can be successful.” Lipitz also noted that “the reality is for all of our programs around the country now, we’re all facing the same challenge, which is this evolving landscape. How the schools at the power level attack that to help their programs be competitive is probably going to look different simply because they have more resources.” In her remarks, GW President Ellen Granberg explained: “The ability to understand and comprehend the complicated legal and regulatory environment and to focus on ways to make sure that we stay compliant while also being highly competitive, is a real challenge, so I was looking for someone who had the experience, the know-how and the intelligence to be able to navigate and thrive in that kind of highly dynamic atmosphere.” (link)

Georgia Southern is set to announce a multiyear partnership with the Sack Company that will include logos on the 25-yard lines at Evans Family Field and on the press box, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy. Eagles AD Jared Benko: "We want to be aggressive in this space. Really excited about continuing to change the game in terms of this industry, this space. The opportunity to have a company that's been so impactful in Statesboro and with Georgia Southern, to me, is a perfect deal." The deal also includes the Sack Company serving as the presenting sponsor of men's basketball and baseball. (link)

From March through July, Clemson’s legal bills in its dispute with the ACC have eclipsed $1M. The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau reports the “Columbia-based law firm Nelson Mullins billed the largest number of hours, 1,216, from March-May. The firm has requested payment of $734,590 for legal work and other costs, including various filing and attorney licensing fees. That is well above the $250K the South Carolina Attorney General's Office approved through the end of the fiscal year in June. But that's because there are two buckets of dollars paying for the university's outside attorneys: The athletic department itself, and the athletic department's fundraising arm, IPTAY. … IPTAY will cover the remaining $484,590 owed to Nelson Mullins with ‘private, unrestricted funds’ donated to the fundraising arm. A Clemson spokesperson tells the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker that any outside representation before March was paid for by IPTAY, not the school. (link, link)

Aflac’s six-year sponsorship deal with Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders contains early termination language in the event Sanders leaves CU before 2028 or Aflac ends its separate, existing endorsement agreement with the coach, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit and Eben Novy-Williams, who add that deal, facilitated by Learfield’s Buffalo Sports Properties, “pays $3.76M over the six-year period from 2023 to 2029, according to a copy of the amended agreement obtained through a public records request. Last year, Aflac paid BSP $177,500, while the insurance company was due to fork over more than three times that this year. In the event Sanders leaves CU prior to the deal’s completion in 2029, the agreement stipulates it would automatically terminate the subsequent year and that Aflac’s final annual payment would be cut in half. For example, if Sanders departed during the 2026-2027 season, the deal would automatically conclude after the 2027-2028 season and Aflac’s last remittance would be reduced from $711,939 to $339,019.” (link)

The Denver Post’s Sean Keeley tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum he has offered to talk privately with Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders and his representatives on multiple occasions, “and specifically very recently since this went down. I have not received a response. I can keep asking, and I think I know what the answer is, but I’m always willing to sit down and talk about that and, frankly, if the results on the field are different than what we saw last year, Paul, I promise you I will be the first person to write and to say…I was wrong.” Keeler goes on to note that his bosses have asked CU what he has done to violate the athletic department’s ethical or professional standards, “and they said, ‘None.’ So, I put my hands up like ‘why are we here?’ I would look forward to that meeting. I've had those meetings – not a lot of them, they're not always great, but if you respect someone, you try to find the time for them, and I do respect Deion Sanders.” (link)

SEC schools will provide public reports on player availability for all conference games in football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball, beginning with the 2024 SEC football season. Prior to game day, student-athletes will be designated as “available,” “probable,” “questionable,” “doubtful,” or “out” for their next game. To provide additional clarity on game day, players will be classified as “available,” “game-time decision,” or “out” for the upcoming game. Failure to provide accurate and timely availability reports will subject schools to potential penalties ranging from $25K for a first offense to $100K for a third and further offenses in football, and a maximum of $15K to $25K in men’s and women’s basketball and baseball. Commissioner Greg Sankey: “This availability reporting policy is intended to reduce pressure from outside entities seeking participation information and represents a commitment of our 16 institutions to provide enhanced transparency to support efforts to protect our student-athletes and the integrity of competition.” (link); Update your playlists.
