The Athletic’s Justin Williams shares what he’s hearing about Connecticut and the Big 12 and notes the “move — which is still hypothetical and in an exploratory phase — is being pitched to Big 12 membership as ‘budget neutral’ in the sense that UConn would not receive a cut of the existing media rights deal, which runs until 2031. … ESPN would throw in some additional TV money for adding UConn (which would go to the Huskies), and UConn and the Big 12 would supplement that through other revenue sources, such as NCAA Tournament units in basketball — with an expectation that the Huskies would fortify those earnings.” Williams also notes the Huskies are looking to bring in at least the $7-8M they are set to receive via the Big East’s new media rights deal with a move to the Big 12 and adds: “Another talking point is that the Big 12 scooping up UConn would remove a potential stabilizing piece for the ACC should that league fracture due to Florida State and Clemson looking to get out of the grant of rights. The suggestion is that a program like UConn could help the rest of the ACC stay together…and the Big 12 preemptively taking that option off the table would be a strategic play long-term.” Meanwhile, with no guarantee that adding UConn will be additive for the league when the next media rights negotiations begin, it may be difficult to shore up enough support among presidents, “but [Commissioner Brett] Yormark has built his share of goodwill, which could be enough to sway some of those on the fence.” More, including optimism that a naming rights partner for the league could be finalized in the coming months. Following reports this week that an informal vote count among Big 12 presidents is 6-2 in favor of adding Connecticut, CBS’ Dennis Dodd and Matt Norlander note the “two against might be a conservative estimate. Sources have indicated a handful of schools are either outright ‘no’ votes or highly skeptical of the proposition at this stage.” Those in favor of adding UConn believe in Commissioner Brett Yormark's ability to maximize the league's brand and earning power. Per Dodd and Norlander: “If he says UConn delivers New York to what used to be the Pure Prairie League, then they believe it. If he says UConn football will make the league better, they believe it. Yormark's ultimate credibility comes from his ability to sign a new media deal ahead of the Pac-12 in October 2022. If not, it might have been the Big 12 dying instead of the Pac-12.” Those opposed to adding the Huskies contend that it’s “too much, too fast. The league hasn't even played a season with 16 teams. The Big 12 doesn't necessarily need UConn in basketball. It is already the No. 1 basketball conference, having rated No. 1 by KenPom in nine of the past 11 seasons.” Others cite travel concerns, and one administrator says: “All the sudden you play another traditionally poor football program,” which could impact the College Football Playoff strength of schedule metric. Sportico’s Michael McCann shares images of proposed postcards that would be sent to student-athletes in the House (and Hubbard) cases once they are settled. The postcards include a QR code directing players to see how much money they’re entitled to as well as their rights and options associated with the settlements. McCann: “The proposed postcards seem to leave little room for misunderstanding, including by explicitly saying ‘you will not be able to sue’ if the person takes no action. [U.S. District Court Judge Claudia] Wilken is also asked to appoint Verita Global, a company that specializes in legal settlements and claim administration, as the settlement administrator. The administrator will be responsible for establishing a ‘public, case-specific website’ for claims and for overseeing a settlement website. While it’s possible Wilken will not grant preliminary approval, McCann believes: “Odds are, however, that she’ll give a thumbs up at the preliminary approval stage.” (link)

Discussions continue about possibly doing away with National Letters of Intent, as On3’s Pete Nakos reports the “Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) is expected to meet next month to discuss a possible proposal to eliminate the National Letter of Intent. Instead, financial aid agreements would serve as the binding documents between an institution and a school. … The question remains how quickly the NCAA would adopt the new proposal to eliminate the National Letter of Intent. The NCAA Division I Council is slated to meet in October; however, sources said it remains unclear if this would need to be voted on at the NCAA Convention in January in Nashville.” (link)

Missouri State officially introduced freshly minted AD Patrick Ransdell, who remarked that he has experience getting a school prepared to change conferences, which the Bears will do when moving to Conference USA and FBS next year. He also said: "I know exactly what it means to be in tune with the mission of an institution of higher education. I'm also a product of student-athlete experience. I believe there isn't a better way to better prepare you for the real world than participating in athletics. Discipline, teamwork, work ethic and it teaches you the groundwork for a long, successful career. That experience has turned me into who I am today and where I'm at today." Community engagement will be among Ransdell’s most immediate priorities, and he explained that “from my conversations with President Williams, we're focused on being as inviting and engaging our community like never before. He speaks on the importance of community and I completely agree. We would like everyone in our community to embrace being involved in the jurisdiction. Our doors are open. I invite all 180,000 people who live in Springfield and hundreds of thousands in this area to come to a game, buy a ticket and donate to the Bears and support this great institution and its athletic department.” President Richard “Biff” Williams added: “We want to create high energy. This is a new day. We wanted to show this isn't the just same ol' same ol." (link)

Idaho State AD Pauline Thiros joins KISU to discuss several topics as the football season kicks off, including the renovation of the Jared Allen Strength and Conditioning Center, and says: “100% of the things that we've been able to do are aspirational and they all happen only through the support of private donors [and] partners who are willing to invest in what we're doing. A lot of that comes when you bring a coach in that really inspires our base; these things get easier. So we've been out asking partners for the things that we need and they have been answering the call to step in and help. The weight room came to us through an anonymous donation and then many others piled in to help make that happen. … Those things show your student-athletes and your community that you're serious about investing in the program. Every time you put a shovel in the ground or make an improvement they feel more valued and they are more invested in what we're doing.” Thiros also explains that revenue from the ICCU Dome helped the Bengals Football AC/Director of Football Strength & Conditioning and Culture Jeff Pittman and adds: “The big thing…we’re looking forward to going to Oregon State and playing that game this weekend, and it is a payday for us, and it’s a great experience to be in that environment. You want to do that once. It’s not good for your football team to have to do it twice. That was an aspirational goal of ours. It was through just a hope and a prayer and a loose fiscal plan that we only scheduled one money game this year and it came to fruition. The only year that we have two money games scheduled that we’re contracted to play is next year unfortunately, and if we can find a way out, we will. We won’t ever do that to our team again.” More. So far, it appears conference realignment is creating more demand for football tickets, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman, who reports: “Resale ticket sales are up 42% compared with the start of last season, according to StubHub. Hotel rates are surging, and airlines have been forced to add flights to meet demand. … A basic room at the George hotel in College Station, Texas, over [the weekend of the Texas-Texas A&M game] now lists for $1,299 a night. That’s about double what it costs to stay at the hotel over November 16, when the Aggies host New Mexico State.” Bachman cites several stories of fans flocking to college towns and stadiums they’ve never been to before, such as Texas fans swarming to Ann Arbor and Ohio State fans flooding Eugene. Meanwhile, Southwest has added 56 flights this year in connection with college football games, compared with just two last year. A full 24 of those are going to or from Las Vegas around Sunday’s [LSU-USC] game. LSU fan/alumnus Jeff Caliva sums up the general mood among fans: “On Sunday through Friday, I complain, and I don’t love the changes to college football. But on Saturday, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care about NIL when the games turn on. All that stuff goes away and it’s just college football.” (link)

In an email to schools on Friday, Nike reinforced that third-party sponsorship patches to game/practice uniforms are prohibited under Nike contracts, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports, adding: “The email reminds school officials that ‘no third-party patches or logos may be applied to any Nike products without Nike’s consent.’ It comes at a time when schools are actively pursuing untapped revenue streams ahead of the arrival in July of House-related athlete rev-share. A reminder: Under the House settlement agreement, schools will be permitted to share 22% of certain revenue streams with athletes. One of those revenue streams does include sponsorships. (Others include ticket sales, TV/conference distribution, bowl money, etc).” (link)

West Virginia alumnus/ESPN host Pat McAfee announced he will pledge $1M to support WVU’s NIL efforts live during his show in Morgantown. Speaking with former Mountaineers QB Pat White, McAfee remarked: “I just want to say thank you for everything you’ve done for this university. Your jersey should have been retired a long time ago. And I think Wren Baker, I think Neal Brown, I think the people in charge right now are at a point where they understand and appreciate everything that you did for this city. What you did for this entire city, program and everything around here will never be forgotten, and thank you for making the trip up on this beautiful Friday. With that being said, I would like to make an announcement before we wrap up here, I will be donating $1 million to the West Virginia NIL collective. It will not be from my name, it will be for the entire team that I played alongside. It was all of us. I was very lucky to be on a team with you, Pat White. I was very lucky to be on a team with you, Owen Schmitt, Reed Williams, Darius Reynaud. You go through the list of absolute dogs, from front to back, that we had on those teams that changed this entire place. From our West Virginia team to this new West Virginia team, we want to say thank you for the hospitality. $1 million bucks. I hope you spend it in the right way, and let’s enjoy the s*** out of a weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia.” (link)

Oklahoma has renewed its partnership with Paciolan. (link); Meanwhile, Oklahoma is partnering with the Sooner-focused 1Oklahoma collective to allow collective donors to earn priority points for contributions. As part of the initiative, every dollar, up to $2M to the collective through the end of the calendar year will be matched by an anonymous donor. AD Joe Castiglione: “In just its first few months of operations, 1Oklahoma has been a tremendous partner to us and our student-athletes. It's fitting that we find a way to further support their efforts while unlocking opportunities and benefits for some of our greatest philanthropic supporters. Today's collegiate athletics environment calls for ingenuity and this collaborative effort will help us provide opportunities for our student-athletes to succeed while also ensuring our donors can reap rewards from their generosity.” (link)

The Florida Atlantic-focused NIL in Paradise collective will be the on-field sponsor at FAU Stadium this season. Owls AD Brian White: “The success our student-athletes have in the NIL space correlates directly with the level of competitive success we can achieve. Winning championships is our goal. For that to happen, in this current environment, we need championship-level NIL. This is just the next step in continuing to aggressively communicate the importance of NIL and promoting NIL in Paradise in every possible way.” (link)

NCPA Executive Director Ramogi Huma talks about the organization’s opposition to the House settlement and tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “This is an unjust settlement that would not only harm current athletes but future college athletes who are only in fourth grade. It could even affect children who aren’t even born yet because the lawyers can agree to extend the terms of this settlement without limits.” He adds of House plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler, with whom he has long worked on players’ rights issues: “[Kessler] has done a lot of great work in the past on issues in and around college sports, but we don’t agree with this settlement and our goal is to do what we can to stop it and give the lawyers another bite.” Asked whether the NCPA would take up this matter in court, Huma says: “We are exploring all options.” (link); CBS’ Dennis Dodd: “Still wondering why [the NCPA] did not file a legal objection. Also, a week away from possible approval I can't find a consensus among observers. Administrators on the ground believe approval is a slam dunk. Others not so sure.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel covers several topics with Fox 2 Detroit’s Charlie Langton, including the pending House settlement. Manuel notes he has no problem with revenue-sharing, but “kids transferring every year, free agency in and of itself every year – I don't think that's very good for the game or for them. We talk about the value of the Michigan degree long-term for your life, and the commitment that Michigan makes to you as a graduate, and the commitment that you will have lifetime from alums around the world. And so for us, we sell that." With his five-year contract up in 2025, Manuel says he would “absolutely” like to remain in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future. “I mean, where else am I going to go? This is the best job in the country, and this place means so much to me. I just put everything I can into it and help to drive the success, and watch it and observe it and cheer and do what's necessary for us to continue our success." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner examines Washington’s financial hurdles as a Big Ten member and observes: “Combine the Huskies’ existing debt with a spike in expenses related to new NCAA rules and a partial share of Big Ten media revenue and, well, and the math looks formidable. … If the math isn’t right, are the Huskies in the Big Ten the equivalent of what WSU was in the (former) Pac-12 — an athletic department forced to scrap and claw and hope, forever on the edge?” Huskies AD Pat Chun says: “It’s a different math equation for our campus. We’ll start from the premise that our past, present and future dictate that Washington has always been at the highest levels of benefits and services provided to athletes, so that will continue. How we fund it is where we’re going to have to put the work in.” All told, Wilner points out, UW will be $180M “behind the likes of Purdue, Minnesota and Rutgers for the rest of the decade” while costs, particularly via the possibility of revenue-sharing, will continue to rise, and Wilner asks: “Exactly how will the Huskies muster the resources needed to compete with USC, Ohio State and Michigan? Any school that doesn’t max out on revenue sharing with athletes stands to get obliterated in recruiting.” Chun: “We’ll have a plan, and we’ll execute on that plan — we don’t have a choice. Historically, we’ve always funded at the highest levels of college athletics, and every school in this conference is going to fund at the highest level. I don’t see a scenario where we aren’t funding at the highest levels. … The term I’ve used with our staff is, there’s a pathway for us to get there. Because we’re at a half-share and because every campus has its own challenges, our pathway is going to be unique to us.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini says he wants feedback from tailgaters this football season as ASU continues to improve the fan experience. “I’m a big believer that food is the experience anchor, and we want to talk a lot more about tailgating this season. We’re gonna be out in the lots ourselves this weekend just interacting with tailgaters, getting feedback on that experience.” Part of ASU’s efforts to restore the faith among fans involves reducing the cost of on-campus parking at football games from $40 to $20 and reducing the price of bottled water by half for the first game of the season. "We're moving in a new direction. Are we there yet? Absolutely not. We have a lot of work to do. … I want the Sun Devils to be something that I'm proud to be associated with again. Giving us these insights that are very informative to the decisions that we're making, there hasn't been a better use of the time that I've been able to spend over the last three months, but the energy we're getting back in return, the energy that we're starting to feel around the community, I find it palpable.” (link, link)

In the final installment of the Candid Coaches series this year, CBS’ Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish ask coaches whether the NCAA Tournament should remain at 68 teams or expand to 72 or 76. Results are fairly even with 38% in favor of expanding to 76, 35% preferring to remain at 68 and 27% voting to expand to 72. One coach who wants to remain at 68 says: "If high-majors can't get at-larges based off that, c'mon, man. Y'all got all the money, all the resources, 15 staff members. If you still can't make the tourney, that's your fault, not the committee." Another adds: “It's hard as hell to make it. I did it as a player. It's such a finite line that you have to be perfect down the stretch and into March to make it. We won our [mid-major] league, but we knew the only way to make it was to win the tournament and it took an overtime fadeaway 3 at the buzzer to get there. It was earned and that's the way it should be if you're not a Power Five. It's a very special 68 with 68 different stories.” One who voted for 72 remarks: “Expand. Too many subjective variables in selecting bubble teams. We've expanded Division I so we should expand the tournament. Every time the tournament has expanded there's been naysayers. It hasn't hurt it. It helped it." A 76er notes: “As a mid-major coach, I think the more access we have the better. I know the high-major teams will take most of the additions, but I'd rather fight for a spot or two than stay with the current model. As someone who has played in the NCAA tourney and coached in it, I hate the venom out there toward expansion. There is no better experience than playing in the NCAA tournament and what comes with it. We should all want more of that for our players." More. (link)

CBS/247Sports’ John Talty catches up with several stakeholders in the NIL world, including agents, collective leaders and football staffers, to get a sense of which programs went all-in on NIL this offseason, and identifies Miami (FL), Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas as the biggest spenders. Talty writes of the Hurricanes: “Miami was one of the most aggressive schools out of the gate when NIL first became legal with John Ruiz becoming an early face of the outsized influence boosters can have in this new era. Miami isn't nearly as reliant on Ruiz now and has built a strong operation that can go out and win a top priority like [QB Cam] Ward. On the Buckeyes: “After losing three consecutive games to archrival Michigan and watching the Wolverines win it all last season, Ohio State faithful were eager and willing to open up their checkbooks to try to ensure the Buckeyes could enjoy a similar fate at the end of the 2024 season. Spending a lot of money, of course, guarantees nothing but Ohio State's roster looks as talented as it's ever been under head coach Ryan Day and that's a testament to its aggressive talent acquisition.” More from Talty. Howard Football HC Larry Scott was unhappy with Rutgers’ last-play rushing touchdown in a game the Scarlet Knights won 44-7 last night, leading to a brief exchange between him and Scarlet Knights HC Greg Schiano after the game. Scott declined to reveal what he said to Schiano but noted: “I think we're both two competitive people. And in that situation, I would choose to handle it a little bit differently. I can't speak for him. I have a lot of respect for Coach Schiano, what he's done and what he's been able to do. But we're both competitive. And in that situation, you know, just a little bit of frustration came out because I thought it would have been handled differently. But he might as well." Schiano defended the decision: “Guys practiced all training camp. They deserve to play. There was no running it up. If it was running it up, you don't use timeouts when you have the ball. You let the game end. That wasn't retaliatory. We were going to run plays. We bring a team in here to play us. We bring them here. We bring them in, we've got to win and we've got to get reps. And they were there, we took them." (link, link)

Two Ohio lawmakers have filed a new bill seeking to remove NIL hurdles for colleges and universities in the state. The new bill would allow schools to work directly with student-athletes and collectives to eliminate some of the barriers to compensation. The bill also adds protections for universities and employees by declaring no state institution or employee “of higher education, private college or supporting foundation is liable for any damages that result from a student-athlete’s inability to earn compensation for use of the student-athlete’s name, image or likeness.” Representative Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) explains: “We’re working, after looking at other states, especially down in the SEC states, what we can do to get rid of red tape, legislative issues and legal problems so that our student athletes can succeed.” Representative Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville) adds: “Players are going to be paid no matter what. Our universities should not have to jump through these extra hoops that they’re having to jump through to ensure that our athletes are receiving the compensation that they deserve. … I think everyone openly admits this gray area exists. [Ohio State has] always sided on the side of caution. I think they’ve done a great job in doing that. And I think every university in Ohio right now is interpreting these laws differently.” (link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “I haven’t seen the bill yet, but sounds like it will allow schools to directly pay NIL compensation to athletes & to fund 3rd parties that pay athletes (collectives).” (link)

ESPN has phased out the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” moniker from its official publications since 2018. As Chairman Jimmy Pitaro noted earlier this week: “I’ve asked people not to use it. I don’t think it’s representative of the culture here. … Others can refer to us as a leader. That’s great, and we take a lot of pride in leading, but referring to ourselves that way always felt a bit off.” Pitaro also takes issue with referring to ESPN as a network, citing its multimedia presence on digital and social platforms, and ESPN EVP of Finance, Research, Strategy and Office of the Chairman Chara-Lynn Aguiar says: “We’ve consistently adapted and innovated to evolve with sports fans and lead the charge in how they interact with sports digitally.” (link)
