NJ.com’s Brian Fonseca reports former Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs is being investigated by the university for a “a possible ‘inappropriate, consensual relationship’ [...] that investigation is believed to have spurred his abrupt resignation on Aug. 16.” Fonseca writes further that the relationship in question includes Women’s Gymnastics HC Umme Salim-Beasley. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy commented yesterday when asked about recent reports of a toxic environment for Women’s Gymnastics student-athletes: “I know there is an investigation underway, so I don’t want to preempt that. I have no insights into that. But that was really ugly and very disturbing. I’ve reached out to Rutgers at the highest levels. I know they have an internal investigation going, but that was a pretty disgusting set of facts in the paper. We shall see.” (link)

Contract details for new Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell: Five-year deal that starts with base pay of $256K. Payout if Ransdell leaves is the remaining amount of the deal through August of 2028, after which there would be nothing owed. In the other direction, the university would owe Ransdell the full balance of the deal if it makes a change without cause. Slew of bonuses ranging from $1K to $5K for competitive & academic achievements with a Bears bowl berth in 2026 at the top end of the scale. (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts to The Eagle’s Alex Miller: “We’re being challenged in ways we’re never been challenged before. We’ve just always had enough increasing revenue through television, now the College Football Playoff, to absorb all of it. This is the first time that we’ve got an expense category that’s so large, a proposed expense category — proposed, that’s the problem. If it was guaranteed, I’d tell you right now what our plan is. Every one of these little folders is a different strategy. We would have our plan, but it’s pretty hard to make a plan and strategy on what you don’t know, so there’s tension.” On a potential Kyle Field brand sponsor on the turf: “I’d hate to go out and push something and realize we just gave away a piece of inventory that was undervalued.” Also of note from Miller: “According to figures provided by A&M via an open records request, A&M athletes made more than $19.44 million ($18.91 million for men, $528,184 for women) from NIL from July 1, 2023-July 1, 2024.” (link)

“We’re different than San Diego State. We’re different than UCSD. Each one is great and unique in their own ways. I think it’s being intentional about how you’re tapping into potential sponsors and markets. Which businesses have USD ties? I think those companies and organizations are going to see a return on investment that maybe they didn’t see before. We have to tell the story.” That’s San Diego AD Kimya Massey in a conversation with the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Bryce Miller. Massey continues: “We need to be in the game and we will be in the game. One of the big priorities for me is raising more revenue and doing more sponsorships to increase the resources and support we do give our staff. We don’t look like a Power 4 school in terms of resources, especially knowing the industry changes. That said, can we be the best resourced at our level and in our league? [...] Paying people competitive salaries is one thing, but they have to feel like they have the support staff and facilities. It’s both.” (link)

“He’s really methodical. He’s not going to take a shortcut. It’s going to be a really, really solid foundation. He’s going to get this thing going to be at the level that all Gators want him to be, which is competing for championships and playing in meaningful postseason games. Once he gets it to that point, it’s going to stay at that point. … We have been patient as a university and that patience is going to be rewarded. I really believe Billy Napier is going to be the coach at Florida for a long, long time.” That’s Gators’ AD Scott Stricklin on his third-year head football coach. (link)

Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore is one of a handful of FBS HCs not currently under contract, according to USA Today’s Tom Schad and Steve Berkowitz, who note Moore is still operating under the three-page MOU he signed in January. Wolverines Assoc. AD for Public and Media Relations David Ablauf says “Moore and his representative have been working with our university attorneys to complete a fully executed contract and we expect that to be finalized soon.” While MOUs are common in college sports, Schad and Berkowitz note that in most cases, “particularly in power conferences and with head coaches, they are replaced by full-fledged contracts within a few months if not weeks. Many even include a negotiation deadline. Moore's memorandum of understanding, for example, states that his offer is ‘contingent upon executing a full employment agreement within 90 days of signing this MOU’ − a deadline that passed April 25.” Marquette sports law professor Martin Greenberg explains that “what you’re operating under [in an MOU] is the agreement to agree, with specified terms that are not contractual in nature.” Other FBS HCs operating without finalized contracts include Tim Skipper at Fresno State, Bryant Vincent at Louisiana-Monroe and Sean Lewis at San Diego State. An SDSU spokesperson says Lewis' contract is expected "to be finalized shortly," while ULM AD John Hartwell wrote in an email that he anticipates Vincent's contract being approved in October. Middle Tennessee AD Chris Massaro on why it took nine months to finalize HC Derek Mason’s contract: "I think mostly it wasn't a huge priority for anybody. I think he and I both realized in particular that there were 1,000 things we'd rather be talking about and get done.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel catches up with FBS coaches in Virginia to hear their thoughts on roster limits, and Old Dominion HC Ricky Rahne says: “I’ve probably spent days of my life thinking about (the impact), but I don’t know, and I really don’t think anybody does.” Liberty HC Jamey Chadwell remarks: “Our university supports us tremendously. If they feel like (105 scholarships are) the best thing to do, they’d do it. But you’re in a conference, and you have to see what your conference wants to do.” Virginia Tech HC Brent Pry says he and most of his ACC colleagues support the 105-player cap, adding: “We have the (financial) support and commitment to be at 105, which initially seems like the right thing. I struggle with losing a walk-on program at Virginia Tech. I know what it’s meant to…so many. But at the same time, you don’t want to give up a competitive advantage. You have an opportunity to scholarship 105 players.” How those additional scholarships would be allocated remains to be seen, and Pry notes: “You put another one at safety, two at D-line, one at receiver. What do you do in the specialists’ room, where normally you have three or four on scholarship, but you have eight or nine in the room and you rely heavily on walk-ons? What do you do with the walk-ons in the program? How many of them make the cut and how many of them move on? We’ve got some decisions to make down the road. Things are going to look different.” (link)

LSU Football HC Brian Kelly isn’t a big fan of putting NIL QR codes on helmets: "The collegiate kind of feel that you have, and this is just my personal feeling, putting a QR code on your helmet just doesn't feel collegiate to me. As much as we can continue to keep this game with the band and with college-aged kids playing the game, I get it. NIL is here to stay and that's great but I think we can be separate from that and still at the end of the game, go to work on NIL. … I think the QR code to me, begins to, I don't know – for us, I think we can keep NIL off the field. I think we can generate the things that we need here at LSU separate from the game day atmosphere." (link)

The Coach Prime effect? Thursday’s North Dakota State-Colorado football game averaged a 2.6 rating and 4.76M viewers on ESPN, marking the network’s most-watched game on the opening Thursday of the season since Ohio State-Indiana in 2017 (5.13M). Across all networks, the game was the most-watched opening Thursday game since Ohio State-Minnesota on FOX two years ago. Ratings and viewership increased 49% from Florida-Utah on ESPN last year, which coincided with the network going dark on Charter cable (1.7, 3.19M). (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams shares what he’s hearing about Connecticut and the Big 12 and notes the “move — which is still hypothetical and in an exploratory phase — is being pitched to Big 12 membership as ‘budget neutral’ in the sense that UConn would not receive a cut of the existing media rights deal, which runs until 2031. … ESPN would throw in some additional TV money for adding UConn (which would go to the Huskies), and UConn and the Big 12 would supplement that through other revenue sources, such as NCAA Tournament units in basketball — with an expectation that the Huskies would fortify those earnings.” Williams also notes the Huskies are looking to bring in at least the $7-8M they are set to receive via the Big East’s new media rights deal with a move to the Big 12 and adds: “Another talking point is that the Big 12 scooping up UConn would remove a potential stabilizing piece for the ACC should that league fracture due to Florida State and Clemson looking to get out of the grant of rights. The suggestion is that a program like UConn could help the rest of the ACC stay together…and the Big 12 preemptively taking that option off the table would be a strategic play long-term.” Meanwhile, with no guarantee that adding UConn will be additive for the league when the next media rights negotiations begin, it may be difficult to shore up enough support among presidents, “but [Commissioner Brett] Yormark has built his share of goodwill, which could be enough to sway some of those on the fence.” More, including optimism that a naming rights partner for the league could be finalized in the coming months. (link)

Following reports this week that an informal vote count among Big 12 presidents is 6-2 in favor of adding Connecticut, CBS’ Dennis Dodd and Matt Norlander note the “two against might be a conservative estimate. Sources have indicated a handful of schools are either outright ‘no’ votes or highly skeptical of the proposition at this stage.” Those in favor of adding UConn believe in Commissioner Brett Yormark's ability to maximize the league's brand and earning power. Per Dodd and Norlander: “If he says UConn delivers New York to what used to be the Pure Prairie League, then they believe it. If he says UConn football will make the league better, they believe it. Yormark's ultimate credibility comes from his ability to sign a new media deal ahead of the Pac-12 in October 2022. If not, it might have been the Big 12 dying instead of the Pac-12.” Those opposed to adding the Huskies contend that it’s “too much, too fast. The league hasn't even played a season with 16 teams. The Big 12 doesn't necessarily need UConn in basketball. It is already the No. 1 basketball conference, having rated No. 1 by KenPom in nine of the past 11 seasons.” Others cite travel concerns, and one administrator says: “All the sudden you play another traditionally poor football program,” which could impact the College Football Playoff strength of schedule metric. More from CBS. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann shares images of proposed postcards that would be sent to student-athletes in the House (and Hubbard) cases once they are settled. The postcards include a QR code directing players to see how much money they’re entitled to as well as their rights and options associated with the settlements. McCann: “The proposed postcards seem to leave little room for misunderstanding, including by explicitly saying ‘you will not be able to sue’ if the person takes no action. [U.S. District Court Judge Claudia] Wilken is also asked to appoint Verita Global, a company that specializes in legal settlements and claim administration, as the settlement administrator. The administrator will be responsible for establishing a ‘public, case-specific website’ for claims and for overseeing a settlement website. While it’s possible Wilken will not grant preliminary approval, McCann believes: “Odds are, however, that she’ll give a thumbs up at the preliminary approval stage.” (link)

Discussions continue about possibly doing away with National Letters of Intent, as On3’s Pete Nakos reports the “Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) is expected to meet next month to discuss a possible proposal to eliminate the National Letter of Intent. Instead, financial aid agreements would serve as the binding documents between an institution and a school. … The question remains how quickly the NCAA would adopt the new proposal to eliminate the National Letter of Intent. The NCAA Division I Council is slated to meet in October; however, sources said it remains unclear if this would need to be voted on at the NCAA Convention in January in Nashville.” (link)

Missouri State officially introduced freshly minted AD Patrick Ransdell, who remarked that he has experience getting a school prepared to change conferences, which the Bears will do when moving to Conference USA and FBS next year. He also said: "I know exactly what it means to be in tune with the mission of an institution of higher education. I'm also a product of student-athlete experience. I believe there isn't a better way to better prepare you for the real world than participating in athletics. Discipline, teamwork, work ethic and it teaches you the groundwork for a long, successful career. That experience has turned me into who I am today and where I'm at today." Community engagement will be among Ransdell’s most immediate priorities, and he explained that “from my conversations with President Williams, we're focused on being as inviting and engaging our community like never before. He speaks on the importance of community and I completely agree. We would like everyone in our community to embrace being involved in the jurisdiction. Our doors are open. I invite all 180,000 people who live in Springfield and hundreds of thousands in this area to come to a game, buy a ticket and donate to the Bears and support this great institution and its athletic department.” President Richard “Biff” Williams added: “We want to create high energy. This is a new day. We wanted to show this isn't the just same ol' same ol." (link)

Idaho State AD Pauline Thiros joins KISU to discuss several topics as the football season kicks off, including the renovation of the Jared Allen Strength and Conditioning Center, and says: “100% of the things that we've been able to do are aspirational and they all happen only through the support of private donors [and] partners who are willing to invest in what we're doing. A lot of that comes when you bring a coach in that really inspires our base; these things get easier. So we've been out asking partners for the things that we need and they have been answering the call to step in and help. The weight room came to us through an anonymous donation and then many others piled in to help make that happen. … Those things show your student-athletes and your community that you're serious about investing in the program. Every time you put a shovel in the ground or make an improvement they feel more valued and they are more invested in what we're doing.” Thiros also explains that revenue from the ICCU Dome helped the Bengals Football AC/Director of Football Strength & Conditioning and Culture Jeff Pittman and adds: “The big thing…we’re looking forward to going to Oregon State and playing that game this weekend, and it is a payday for us, and it’s a great experience to be in that environment. You want to do that once. It’s not good for your football team to have to do it twice. That was an aspirational goal of ours. It was through just a hope and a prayer and a loose fiscal plan that we only scheduled one money game this year and it came to fruition. The only year that we have two money games scheduled that we’re contracted to play is next year unfortunately, and if we can find a way out, we will. We won’t ever do that to our team again.” More. So far, it appears conference realignment is creating more demand for football tickets, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman, who reports: “Resale ticket sales are up 42% compared with the start of last season, according to StubHub. Hotel rates are surging, and airlines have been forced to add flights to meet demand. … A basic room at the George hotel in College Station, Texas, over [the weekend of the Texas-Texas A&M game] now lists for $1,299 a night. That’s about double what it costs to stay at the hotel over November 16, when the Aggies host New Mexico State.” Bachman cites several stories of fans flocking to college towns and stadiums they’ve never been to before, such as Texas fans swarming to Ann Arbor and Ohio State fans flooding Eugene. Meanwhile, Southwest has added 56 flights this year in connection with college football games, compared with just two last year. A full 24 of those are going to or from Las Vegas around Sunday’s [LSU-USC] game. LSU fan/alumnus Jeff Caliva sums up the general mood among fans: “On Sunday through Friday, I complain, and I don’t love the changes to college football. But on Saturday, it doesn’t matter. I don’t care about NIL when the games turn on. All that stuff goes away and it’s just college football.” (link)

In an email to schools on Friday, Nike reinforced that third-party sponsorship patches to game/practice uniforms are prohibited under Nike contracts, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports, adding: “The email reminds school officials that ‘no third-party patches or logos may be applied to any Nike products without Nike’s consent.’ It comes at a time when schools are actively pursuing untapped revenue streams ahead of the arrival in July of House-related athlete rev-share. A reminder: Under the House settlement agreement, schools will be permitted to share 22% of certain revenue streams with athletes. One of those revenue streams does include sponsorships. (Others include ticket sales, TV/conference distribution, bowl money, etc).” (link)

West Virginia alumnus/ESPN host Pat McAfee announced he will pledge $1M to support WVU’s NIL efforts live during his show in Morgantown. Speaking with former Mountaineers QB Pat White, McAfee remarked: “I just want to say thank you for everything you’ve done for this university. Your jersey should have been retired a long time ago. And I think Wren Baker, I think Neal Brown, I think the people in charge right now are at a point where they understand and appreciate everything that you did for this city. What you did for this entire city, program and everything around here will never be forgotten, and thank you for making the trip up on this beautiful Friday. With that being said, I would like to make an announcement before we wrap up here, I will be donating $1 million to the West Virginia NIL collective. It will not be from my name, it will be for the entire team that I played alongside. It was all of us. I was very lucky to be on a team with you, Pat White. I was very lucky to be on a team with you, Owen Schmitt, Reed Williams, Darius Reynaud. You go through the list of absolute dogs, from front to back, that we had on those teams that changed this entire place. From our West Virginia team to this new West Virginia team, we want to say thank you for the hospitality. $1 million bucks. I hope you spend it in the right way, and let’s enjoy the s*** out of a weekend in Morgantown, West Virginia.” (link)

Oklahoma has renewed its partnership with Paciolan. (link); Meanwhile, Oklahoma is partnering with the Sooner-focused 1Oklahoma collective to allow collective donors to earn priority points for contributions. As part of the initiative, every dollar, up to $2M to the collective through the end of the calendar year will be matched by an anonymous donor. AD Joe Castiglione: “In just its first few months of operations, 1Oklahoma has been a tremendous partner to us and our student-athletes. It's fitting that we find a way to further support their efforts while unlocking opportunities and benefits for some of our greatest philanthropic supporters. Today's collegiate athletics environment calls for ingenuity and this collaborative effort will help us provide opportunities for our student-athletes to succeed while also ensuring our donors can reap rewards from their generosity.” (link)

The Florida Atlantic-focused NIL in Paradise collective will be the on-field sponsor at FAU Stadium this season. Owls AD Brian White: “The success our student-athletes have in the NIL space correlates directly with the level of competitive success we can achieve. Winning championships is our goal. For that to happen, in this current environment, we need championship-level NIL. This is just the next step in continuing to aggressively communicate the importance of NIL and promoting NIL in Paradise in every possible way.” (link)
