Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark was on the set of Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff yesterday and had this to say about Connecticut: “It's incumbent on me to create value. Big brands, big markets matter. We'll see what happens.” While the show’s Mark Ingram crowd surfed in Morgantown, Yormark declined the offer. (link, link)

Texas Senator Ted Cruz has once again spoken out against the excesses of NIL: “And I can promise you, if and when I’m the chairman of the commerce committee, NIL reform, ensuring real competitiveness, so that these programs can continue going on for years and decades and centuries, that is going to be a very, very high priority. … They were not willing to move this year. I’m very hopeful next year with the gavel, that’ll change.” While Cruz supports the right for student-athletes to be compensated for their NIL, he is concerned that the smaller programs, including HBCUs, could be priced out of competition. Similarly, he has voiced concern for women’s sports and other non-revenue producers. (link)

The NCAA has squashed QR codes on helmets, leaving Oklahoma State unable to implement its latest NIL strategy. The Pokes viewed the QR codes as permissible institutional decals, but the NCAA says they are prohibited advertising marks. AD Chad Weiberg says the school will abide by the decision but disagrees with it and will advocate for reform. Weiberg, “[This] serves as the latest example of how college sports are evolving at a faster pace than the rulebook.” (link)

Quote of the Day came from former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban on ESPN College GameDay as the crew was discussing NIL: "I just want to say: you guys keep talking about a $20 million roster. If you don’t pay the right guys, you’re shit out of luck.” Kirk Herbstreit shook Saban’s hand and quipped: “Congratulations, you just broke the Internet.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points to sources who tell him today’s deadline to extend the football scheduling agreement between the Pac-2 & Mountain West beyond this season will not produce results. However, per a source, “If there’s no agreement, that doesn’t mean we can’t still do something. This is not a standoff situation.” More from Wilner: “At this point, WSU has six opponents lined up for 2025: North Texas, San Diego State, Idaho, Washington, Virginia and Oregon State. Meanwhile, the Beavers have at least six opponents on the schedule: Cal, Fresno State, Houston, Texas Tech and Oregon, plus Washington State.” (link)

Yesterday came & went without a deal between Fox & the Big Ten Network with Comcast, meaning some Oregon & Washington fans missed out on their football season openers. From BTN: “Despite our efforts, Comcast Xfinity maintains its position as the only distributor that declined to expand with the newest members of the Big Ten Conference.” (link)

Big Sky Deputy Commissioner Dan Satter sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to talk about the impact of brand advancement with the Big Sky’s agreement with ESPN and having more games on linear broadcasts. Satter also recaps the previous academic wins for the conference and highlights what’s to come with preparing for and communicating through upcoming changes. On the exposure that comes with being partnered with ESPN: “That’s a destination for college sports fans that when they want to watch something they're opening that app. And when your logo’s next to the Power 5 logos and there's 20-some conferences listed there, all the sudden you're on that menu where people are going to watch you that might not have an affiliation or association with the Big Sky, but because of that partnership, all the sudden people are tuning in that never have before. Furthermore, with the linear broadcasts, we've had a number of them for our football programs on ESPN2 and done terrific ratings, even outrating some of the Group of 5 conferences in the same weekend. … That exposure to our coaches they feel is critically important in recruiting and all the way through our presidents and what they hear from alumni or donors about the accessibility and the professional quality of the broadcast really means a lot and I think elevates the profile of our league.” Full Q&A on Connect. SBJ’s Bret McCormick examines the $300M renovation of PNC Arena, home of NC State’s men’s basketball team, and points out that with the Wolfpack and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes as the main two tenants, the arena will need to prioritize flexibility to cater to “fans, journalists, broadcasters, alumni, touring artists’ entourages and corporate clients alike.” Gensler Studio Director Greg Brown tells McCormick: “The Hurricanes, NC State basketball and the unique event needs for concerts — all those can be at times in conflict.” One of the design options Gensler presented to the Centennial Authority involves the “conversion of a large press room and storage area…into a single, 4,770-square-foot multipurpose room,” per McCormick, who notes the room could be configured in at least four ways: a one-room layout for an event; a two-room setup for a press conference and event; and one-room and two-room dining arrangements. A bar in the back corner of the room would be one of the few permanent fixtures. A new adjacent kitchen would be added to serve the multipurpose room and four new bunker suites that would sit across the hall, beneath the seating bowl.” Centennial Authority Executive Director Jeff Merritt: “Multipurpose is a word that I would use in all caps for that space.” As far as selling premium inventory in the space between the multipurpose room and the event floor, Merritt says: “The jury is out on how they’d sell that. Hockey and basketball, it’s kind of easy, but how they do that for shows, family shows, I just don’t know how they’ll sell that. It’s a new concept for us. Gensler has given us the ability to take those in a different direction if they don’t sell.” More. (link)

San Diego announces a multi-million dollar investment into improvements at the Jenny Craig Pavilion (JCP), the on-campus home of the Toreros’ women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. The improvements, which were made possible by a “generous gift from Jenny Craig,” feature a four-sided center-hung videoboard, two end wall ribbon boards, production room upgrades for both in-arena and broadcast content, and a complete overhaul and replacement of the venue’s sports lighting and audio systems. Phase two of the project included major renovations and upgrades to USD volleyball’s locker room and coaches offices, as well as the addition of a team lounge and auditorium for film study. Photos included. (link)

Rhode Island announces a series of facility enhancements at the Ryan Center, including upgraded seating in the club levels, improvements to telescopic platforms in the 100 levels and the installment of public in-arena Wifi. Phase one was completed over the summer, while phase two will begin in 2025. The target completion date for Wifi, which is part of phase three, will be announced at a later date. (link)

Dayton welcomed a record 4,196 fans to the Frericks Center for the women’s volleyball match against Ohio State last night, but after splitting the first two sets, humidity caused the playing surface to become unplayable. Frericks does not have air conditioning. A statement from the athletic department: “Due to playing conditions and out of an abundance of caution for the health of the student-athletes, tonight’s match between No. 22 Dayton and RV Ohio State has been ruled a no contest.” (link)

NJ.com’s Brian Fonseca reports former Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs is being investigated by the university for a “a possible ‘inappropriate, consensual relationship’ [...] that investigation is believed to have spurred his abrupt resignation on Aug. 16.” Fonseca writes further that the relationship in question includes Women’s Gymnastics HC Umme Salim-Beasley. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy commented yesterday when asked about recent reports of a toxic environment for Women’s Gymnastics student-athletes: “I know there is an investigation underway, so I don’t want to preempt that. I have no insights into that. But that was really ugly and very disturbing. I’ve reached out to Rutgers at the highest levels. I know they have an internal investigation going, but that was a pretty disgusting set of facts in the paper. We shall see.” (link)

Contract details for new Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell: Five-year deal that starts with base pay of $256K. Payout if Ransdell leaves is the remaining amount of the deal through August of 2028, after which there would be nothing owed. In the other direction, the university would owe Ransdell the full balance of the deal if it makes a change without cause. Slew of bonuses ranging from $1K to $5K for competitive & academic achievements with a Bears bowl berth in 2026 at the top end of the scale. (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts to The Eagle’s Alex Miller: “We’re being challenged in ways we’re never been challenged before. We’ve just always had enough increasing revenue through television, now the College Football Playoff, to absorb all of it. This is the first time that we’ve got an expense category that’s so large, a proposed expense category — proposed, that’s the problem. If it was guaranteed, I’d tell you right now what our plan is. Every one of these little folders is a different strategy. We would have our plan, but it’s pretty hard to make a plan and strategy on what you don’t know, so there’s tension.” On a potential Kyle Field brand sponsor on the turf: “I’d hate to go out and push something and realize we just gave away a piece of inventory that was undervalued.” Also of note from Miller: “According to figures provided by A&M via an open records request, A&M athletes made more than $19.44 million ($18.91 million for men, $528,184 for women) from NIL from July 1, 2023-July 1, 2024.” (link)

“We’re different than San Diego State. We’re different than UCSD. Each one is great and unique in their own ways. I think it’s being intentional about how you’re tapping into potential sponsors and markets. Which businesses have USD ties? I think those companies and organizations are going to see a return on investment that maybe they didn’t see before. We have to tell the story.” That’s San Diego AD Kimya Massey in a conversation with the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Bryce Miller. Massey continues: “We need to be in the game and we will be in the game. One of the big priorities for me is raising more revenue and doing more sponsorships to increase the resources and support we do give our staff. We don’t look like a Power 4 school in terms of resources, especially knowing the industry changes. That said, can we be the best resourced at our level and in our league? [...] Paying people competitive salaries is one thing, but they have to feel like they have the support staff and facilities. It’s both.” (link)

“He’s really methodical. He’s not going to take a shortcut. It’s going to be a really, really solid foundation. He’s going to get this thing going to be at the level that all Gators want him to be, which is competing for championships and playing in meaningful postseason games. Once he gets it to that point, it’s going to stay at that point. … We have been patient as a university and that patience is going to be rewarded. I really believe Billy Napier is going to be the coach at Florida for a long, long time.” That’s Gators’ AD Scott Stricklin on his third-year head football coach. (link)

Michigan Football HC Sherrone Moore is one of a handful of FBS HCs not currently under contract, according to USA Today’s Tom Schad and Steve Berkowitz, who note Moore is still operating under the three-page MOU he signed in January. Wolverines Assoc. AD for Public and Media Relations David Ablauf says “Moore and his representative have been working with our university attorneys to complete a fully executed contract and we expect that to be finalized soon.” While MOUs are common in college sports, Schad and Berkowitz note that in most cases, “particularly in power conferences and with head coaches, they are replaced by full-fledged contracts within a few months if not weeks. Many even include a negotiation deadline. Moore's memorandum of understanding, for example, states that his offer is ‘contingent upon executing a full employment agreement within 90 days of signing this MOU’ − a deadline that passed April 25.” Marquette sports law professor Martin Greenberg explains that “what you’re operating under [in an MOU] is the agreement to agree, with specified terms that are not contractual in nature.” Other FBS HCs operating without finalized contracts include Tim Skipper at Fresno State, Bryant Vincent at Louisiana-Monroe and Sean Lewis at San Diego State. An SDSU spokesperson says Lewis' contract is expected "to be finalized shortly," while ULM AD John Hartwell wrote in an email that he anticipates Vincent's contract being approved in October. Middle Tennessee AD Chris Massaro on why it took nine months to finalize HC Derek Mason’s contract: "I think mostly it wasn't a huge priority for anybody. I think he and I both realized in particular that there were 1,000 things we'd rather be talking about and get done.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel catches up with FBS coaches in Virginia to hear their thoughts on roster limits, and Old Dominion HC Ricky Rahne says: “I’ve probably spent days of my life thinking about (the impact), but I don’t know, and I really don’t think anybody does.” Liberty HC Jamey Chadwell remarks: “Our university supports us tremendously. If they feel like (105 scholarships are) the best thing to do, they’d do it. But you’re in a conference, and you have to see what your conference wants to do.” Virginia Tech HC Brent Pry says he and most of his ACC colleagues support the 105-player cap, adding: “We have the (financial) support and commitment to be at 105, which initially seems like the right thing. I struggle with losing a walk-on program at Virginia Tech. I know what it’s meant to…so many. But at the same time, you don’t want to give up a competitive advantage. You have an opportunity to scholarship 105 players.” How those additional scholarships would be allocated remains to be seen, and Pry notes: “You put another one at safety, two at D-line, one at receiver. What do you do in the specialists’ room, where normally you have three or four on scholarship, but you have eight or nine in the room and you rely heavily on walk-ons? What do you do with the walk-ons in the program? How many of them make the cut and how many of them move on? We’ve got some decisions to make down the road. Things are going to look different.” (link)

LSU Football HC Brian Kelly isn’t a big fan of putting NIL QR codes on helmets: "The collegiate kind of feel that you have, and this is just my personal feeling, putting a QR code on your helmet just doesn't feel collegiate to me. As much as we can continue to keep this game with the band and with college-aged kids playing the game, I get it. NIL is here to stay and that's great but I think we can be separate from that and still at the end of the game, go to work on NIL. … I think the QR code to me, begins to, I don't know – for us, I think we can keep NIL off the field. I think we can generate the things that we need here at LSU separate from the game day atmosphere." (link)
