The rapid pace of change in college sports means the structure of athletic departments may be “altogether unrecognizable within five years,” according to SBJ’s Terry Lefton, who adds: “More immediately, the revenue pressure has skyrocketed and new positions are being created and recruited, such as CROs or GMs of important revenue sports, like football and basketball.” TurnkeyZRG Chairman/CEO Len Perna tells Lefton the changes have already “totally altered the candidate pools for many collegiate positions and now include people who never would have been interested or included just a few years ago.” Excel Sports Management’s Nolan Partners President Chad Biagini points out, however, that the transfer of executive talent from pro to college isn’t simple. “You have a lot of people who assume they are your boss in that environment, so I would tell you that stakeholder management and the ability to bring them on the journey with you is essential for success in the college space. … In many of these new [collegiate] positions, a big and ongoing part of the college scene now is attracting the best athletes, which may have less to do with the school itself and more about who is running the programs.” Meanwhile, UTA’s James & Co./UTA Executive Search Founder Michele James comments on the way tech is impacting talent acquisition: “[Organizations] are preparing for things like AI and massive computing and filling those jobs with people who will absolutely need to impact revenue. They are looking for a faster booking or ticketing system and to speed up payment cycles. It’s changing to where the CTO is going from being the know-how office to the how-to revenue office.” (link)

The Mountain West has released a statement on the expiration of the deadline to extend the league’s scheduling partnership with Washington State and Oregon State: “The football scheduling arrangement with Oregon State and Washington State was a one-year agreement. For the 2025 season, the Mountain West and its member institutions are moving forward with their conference and non-conference schedules. Our focus remains on the current season and our exceptional teams.” The Athletic’s Chris Vannini on why he believes it’s unlikely the two sides will eventually reunite: “One reason is money. Oregon State and Washington State would rather not pay so much for six combined home games. The $14M this year comes out to $2.3M per home game, which is above the going rate for a non-conference home game. But it’s $1.16M for each total game, home or away, if you prefer to count that way, at a time when OSU and WSU need games and there are limited options. The Mountain West’s perspective is that it can take or leave a deal. … No deal, however, would take away from the G5-leading ‘Power 5’ matchups talking point in 2025, a case the league has made this season for its strength of schedule.” Vannini also notes OSU and WSU could ink individual agreements with certain Mountain West schools or look to the ACC. “Stanford has just two non-conference games listed publicly and a TBD ACC schedule. Cal has three, one of which is already at Oregon State and another at San Diego State. SMU similarly has three games listed, two on the road. Among the rest of the ACC, only a few schools have a public opening, like Duke, Miami (FL) and Pitt. It’s worth keeping in mind The CW has television deals with the Pac-12 and the ACC.” More from Vannini. (link)

The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen observes that Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois has changed the face of the Wildcats’ leadership team by bringing in six new Assoc. ADs from Missouri. “Let’s say this: She surely knows what she is getting. By comparison, former AD Dave Heeke brought in people from Austin Peay and Kansas, among others, to form the leadership of his staff. It didn’t work. One of the key upper-level staffers he inherited, Mike Ketcham, soon left for UNLV, of all places. In retrospect, it is probably a needed change. While, in my opinion, Heeke could hold his own with any AD in the old Pac-12, his staff was stocked with some robotic figures — those who did little to rescue the athletic department during a seven-year financial crisis or create a presence in the athletic community.” Hansen also notes Reed-Francois has “wisely kept” [Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA] Erika Barnes “who…I believe could be an athletic director if she chose to pursue that type of career.” (link)

New on Connect: Furman AD Jason Donnelly joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle after receiving the AD of the Year award and reflects on the highlights on and off the field from this past season as well as leading through change in today’s landscape. “More important than the change around you is understanding who you are: the mission, vision and values. It’s the Augustine quote, ‘Decisions are easier when values are clearer.’ … We know who we are. We know what our values are. We know what we’re going to emphasize, so we know what our model is going to be first. The second part of that is then analyze the change and see how either immediate it is or do we need do we have time to adjust? One of the things that we've been following – and Greg Sankey came out and said the other day – is it's okay for us all to proceed slowly through these changes and understand them. We operate in space where there's a permissive environment. We’re open to change. We want to see what those things are. We’re nimble enough in the ability to adapt and change, but at the same time we're not going to make this colossal change into the things that we don't know. … What we do know is how important the academic mission is, how important being Division I is, and how important it is for us to be competitive.” (link)

Former Boston College Women’s Tennis AC Karen McNamara is suing the school and Women’s Tennis HC Nigel Bentley for gender discrimination, fostering a hostile work environment and violating of the Wage Act after BC let her go in May 2023. McNamara also argues that her termination was retaliatory for voicing complaints about Bentley. From the suit: “Despite Ms. McNamara’s repeated complaints to BC officials and administrators, BC failed to remedy the situation. Instead, Ms. McNamara was unlawfully terminated in retaliation.” The suit also contends that “upon information and belief, Coach Bentley was threatened by Ms. McNamara’s tennis pedigree and her family’s ties to BC. He perceived Ms. McNamara, an accomplished and confident professional woman, as a threat to his position. … Coach Bentley would sit directly behind and very close to Ms. McNamara’s desk in an intimidating manner. He would also often speak to her with one foot up on his chair while in shorts, risking exposing himself.” (link)

Iowa State Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Nick Joos and Arkansas Chief Public Relations Officer Kevin Trainor sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on the evolution of athletics communications. Joos and Trainor discuss the shift in storytelling power from traditional media outlets to a department’s own team of content creators who produce efficient and engaging stories across a variety of channels. The duo also shares insight into the role a communications staff can play in expanding NIL opportunities for student-athletes, the challenges of segmenting an audience for marketing purposes, and the importance of internal communication. Trainor explains that the Razorbacks’ content team works to communicate effectively not just externally, but also internally. “There are a lot of folks in this industry that need to understand what's going on, whether it's helping your athletics director, your conference commissioner…even some of the staff that may not be following or understand how these things will affect what they're doing.” Joos adds: “As NIL continues to evolve, as we get into the revenue-sharing model, that ability to tell that story is going to be more important than ever so that we can generate the resources to handle all the things that are coming at us on a regular basis.” Joos also explains the Cyclones have moved away from offering traditional media guides, instead producing slimmed-down versions of a given program’s historical achievements that are printed in limited quantities. “Your website has almost become the historical repository. That’s the library and that’s that media guide that has a lot of that information.” More on ADU. (link)

The New York Times’ Joe Drape and Allison McCann, citing data provided by Opendorse, report it can cost “as much as $10.5M for a title-contending starting offense and defense in the new Power 4 conferences.” Broken down by position average, they note a starting P4 QB can expect to make $820K, a starting wide receiver can expect $610K, and offensive and defensive linemen can earn $550K and $470K, respectively. Linebackers can expect $440K, defensive backs $410K and running backs $340K. Some of the highest earners include Texas QB Quinn Ewers ($1.7M), Longhorns QB Arch Manning ($3.1M), and Georgia QB Carson Beck ($1.4M). Drape and McCann note that Beck “brings in enough that he recently bought a Lamborghini that retails for $270K.” Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence: “By nature, athletes are disciplined and purpose-driven. What has been really cool to see is how many athletes on our platform, especially the women, lean into the opportunities to be creative and build a brand. They don’t want to get paid just for going to practice and games.” Among female student-athletes, Drape and McCann note LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne ($3.9M) and Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers ($1.4M) are among the highest-paid. (link); Also from Lawrence: “These numbers are from January ’24, and they’ve risen by 25.1% since then.” (link)

Rice was the only AAC member without a collective until last month's launch of The South Main Collective. Owls AD Tommy McClelland: “The South Main Collective will provide NIL possibilities to Rice student-athletes while also helping to prepare them for life after college through professional development and networking opportunities.” (link)

Georgia will name the updated press box inside Sanford Stadium after former Tennis HC/SID/Bulldog Club Executive Secretary Dan Magill and former longtime SID Claude Felton. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “Along with Vince Dooley, it would be hard to find two people who have meant more to Georgia Athletics than Dan Magill and Claude Felton. Coach Magill and Claude combined to serve this university for nearly a century. We are pleased to honor their remarkable accomplishments with the naming of the 400 and 500 levels of the new press box.” (link)

More from Michigan AD Warde Manuel’s interview with The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb in which Manuel addresses the pattern of leaks about NCAA investigations of Michigan: “Well, first of all, I think it is wholly unacceptable and ridiculous that people who have the information, or get information about what's going on are leaking it to the press and to the public. And we try to find it. We just don't let it pass. We actively try to find where these leaks are coming from. Particularly if it’s us. The problem, Sam, as you know, is it's hard to get to the bottom of it. Doesn't mean we're going to stop trying. Because it really does not help the process. It doesn't help the University of Michigan to go through it. It doesn't help the NCAA. … In some cases, some of it is wrong…some of it I can't respond to when it's wrong…but people are leaking things out there about the case. It is just disappointing, unnecessary, and sad." Manuel also discusses the Wolverines’ cautious approach to NIL at the beginning and points out there was already an NCAA investigation underway at the time. “So, what are we supposed to do, go out and be ultra-aggressive, break rules? At a time when we’re being investigated for breaking rules? So, yeah, we didn’t push the envelope like others pushed it because we were dealing with something in terms of the investigation where if we started to violate more rules now, we’re adding to the rules violation. … The second side is we didn’t have that culture. And we still have folks who find it unacceptable to give money to student-athletes. I keep saying to our donor base, ‘It’s okay. It is legal now. But you have to remember I played for a coach in Bo Schembechler who would scare anybody who tried to give his players anything. So, we have started to shift the culture of people understanding that it’s okay to support our student-athletes.” Lots more. (link)

Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen joins the Sycamore Sitdown to discuss his first couple months in Terre Haute and notes that for the most part he’s been in the listening tour phase. “It’s really understanding where we need to go as a department. Even outside the chaos of the NCAA and what's going on in our world, we can still control our attitude or effort and getting after it. But it also comes down to I needed to build those relationships. I need people to trust me. I need to understand where people's minds are at internally and externally and how we can continue to grow this thing. But that was really my mindset coming into this thing because I need to set the path forward to build those relationships in a quick fashion, because Terre Haute’s not small, but in a smaller community everyone knows everyone and honestly that was a focus of mine.” Christensen also talks about the importance of building relationships within the department, particularly among coaches to find out specifically what they need to advance their programs. “I need to know those things because if I have a conversation with a donor or someone on campus that we might have access to, if it's something for student welfare, I need to be able to have those things in my mind.” Also from Christensen: “I’m a big believer in broad-based success. If you look at some of those programs that they might be really good men's basketball or just football or just volleyball, that's awesome, but I want everyone to be successful, and that's why I kind of go back to the [Missouri Valley] all-sports trophy. That is ultimately my goal each and every year.” More. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake provides more information on the Pac-12’s football scheduling plans as the deadline has passed to extend a deal with the Mountain West. Per a source: “We’re too far apart.” More key points from Canzano: “Nothing is imminent. Cool your jets on the ‘OSU/WSU to the Big 12!!’ talk or ‘The Cougs and Beavs are about to announce they’re going to the ACC!!’ Manage the expectations. However, this likely means the Pac-12 schools have confidence that they can piece together a 2025 schedule that features more P4 opponents. [...] Is it possible the Pac-12 and ACC (or another P4 conference) could be eyeing some kind of football scheduling partnership for 2025? Sure. That’s where my mind went on Sunday, but I’m being told that whatever comes next could take some time to put together.” (link)
|
Sticking in the Pacific Northwest as Canzano also reports Oregon is “knee deep” in researching the possible addition of thousands of premium-level seating options at Autzen Stadium. Ducks AD Rob Mullens: “We have great club seats. We have outstanding suites. But there are other new products that people are interested in and we probably need to meet that demand. [...] That north side obviously needs some work with points of sale for concessions and restroom availability. If we met those needs and added a few thousand seats that would be great — but we won’t lead with it.” Mullens has taken a close look at Utah’s upgrades to Rice-Eccles Stadium, the Texas Live! buildout at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field, as well as the Detroit Tigers’ Comerica Park. Like Oregon, Miami (FL) Football’s NIL infrastructure has been heralded by many as one of the best across the industry. The Canes’ performance at Florida on Saturday only served to bolster that belief. Canes Connection Co-Founder Zach Burr: “It's been a three-year process of Mario's sweat and blood and everything else to try to rebuild this roster. For us to be able to play a small part in helping him to do that days like [Saturday] validate all the hard work. [...] When you bring in someone like Mario who is an elite recruiter, if you don't give him the resources what's the point of bringing him in? You can't bring in talent unless you have a solid NIL program [...] Ohio State, you saw what they did in the transfer portal. We kind of did the same thing. In modern day college football, you're not going to be competitive if you don't have full alignment on your NIL.” (link)

Last night’s LSU-USC showdown from Las Vegas averaged 9.2M viewers with a peak at 11.1M. It was also the most-streamed college football game ever for ABC. Of additional note from ESPN PR: “ABC scored its second-most-watched Week 1 on record with 8.0M viewers across 4 games.” (link)

Oklahoma has added a tradition at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as the Sooners will pay tribute to native Oklahoman, longtime Sooner supporter and Country Music Hall of Famer Toby Keith, who passed away from cancer back in February. VP for ESPN Bet and ESPN Fantasy Mike Morrison says ESPN Bet is “tracking very much along expectations” despite having secured just 2.8% of the market during its first year. Sharp Alpha Advisors Managing Partner Lloyd Danzig points out ESPN Bet has made strides to put it in the ballpark of the second-tier of sportsbooks, while the opportunity to capitalize on its brand is still on the table. “ESPN Bet has achieved a hold rate and parlay mix that meets or exceeds levels seen at BetMGM and Caesars, while still lagging significantly behind DraftKings and FanDuel. Market share remains muted compared to initial investor expectations, though the media side of ESPN has shown clear signs of more aggressively integrating betting into core user flows.” Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao explains that “for Year 2 and beyond, ESPN is betting on a strategy taken from the world of Apple and Google. The media giant is creating an ecosystem around the ESPN app, ESPN Bet, and ESPN Fantasy in which the accounts are now interconnected. For example, if a user drafts Patrick Mahomes on their fantasy team, they will receive enhanced prop bets for Mahomes during game day. … On the other hand, DraftKings and FanDuel are looking to do the reverse of ESPN by expanding from an online sports betting and fantasy platform and into content machines. And even Fanatics, who acquired PointsBet last year, is still hoping to build its own ecosystem tied with merchandise and collectibles.” (link)
