Northwestern officially introduced AD Mark Jackson today, and in his opening remarks, Jackson addressed the importance of academics at Northwestern: “Consider these achievements from just the 2023-24 academic year: a graduation rate of 98%...which led the Big Ten for the 19th consecutive year. Wildcats leading the Big Ten with 278 Academic All-Big Ten honors." He went on to ask: “Why should Northwestern take any approach to athletics other than try to be in the top echelon nationally? We are well on our way. We will utilize our best assets...to recruit and retain the next great generation of student-athletes. … No idea is too small. We will increase revenues through current streams and implement new ones. … I have a lot of listening to do, and a lot of watching. … Our athletic department will reflect the rest of the university. When we wear that Northwestern on our chest, we will wear it with honor." On navigating the changing landscape, Jackson remarked: “The word that I keep coming back to is alignment. We have to be aligned from President Schill to the board to the athletic department if we're going to have success in this new era.” Also: “When you think about my experience in the NFL, the bottom line is generating revenue. We're not built that way. That's why we have to look at our department differently. … Pat Ryan Jr. and I have spent the last few days looking at the plans for the stadium. … We're looking at it in a very innovative way, much like an NFL organization, for how we're going to structure that." Lawyers for plaintiffs in a lawsuit concerning Ivy League schools’ refusal to award athletic scholarships have withdrawn their opposition to the proposed House settlement, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who explains: “This comes after both sides involved in proposed House settlement made written clarifications and adjustments stating that the claims in the Ivy League case would not be affected by the settlement.” (link)
|
Meanwhile, lawyers who had been representing six current and former women's rowers in an opposition to proposed House settlement have made a new filing in which they say one of the six has dropped opposition, but they have added five more athletes who do oppose the settlement. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “Per this filing, the new athlete opponents to the settlement comprise 2 current women's volleyball players, 2 former women's swim and dive team members and another former rower.” (link)

DirecTV has sent letters to Power 4 commissioners asking for their help in the ongoing carriage dispute with Disney. A letter sent to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey by DirecTV Head of State & Global Affairs Hamlin Wade reads, in part: “Disney’s unwillingness to evolve will significantly accelerate the decline of Pay TV. … We can smoothly transition to a new service model to give customers more choice, control and value to complement Disney and other programmers’ streaming offerings, delivering a new solution where everyone wins. We’re asking you to please work with your Chancellors and Presidents and your elected officials to empower fans and push for flexibility in the marketplace.” Full letter. (link)

The Sun Belt has admitted an officiating error resulted in a late go-ahead touchdown for Arkansas State in its 34-31 win over Central Arkansas. “The Sun Belt Conference, upon review of the complete pass call with 3 seconds remaining in the Central Arkansas at Arkansas State football game, has announced an incorrect application of the replay review process. The replay official was focused on the firm control and body part down aspects of the act of a catch and failed to evaluate the surviving the ground aspect of a catch during the review of the play in question. The right end zone camera shows the receiver did not survive the ground, but this camera angle was not consulted by the replay official. The replay ruling should have confirmed the on-field call of an incomplete pass.” Had the correct on-field call stood, Arkansas State would have had time for one more play from the 7-yard line. The California Senate passed SB906 unanimously last week, a bill which would require collectives to give schools data on NIL deals of $5K or more and compel schools to publicly display the value of NIL services they provide both by sport and gender. Schools will also have to publicly display their revenue-share distributions by sport and gender. Senator Nancy Skinner (D-9), who sponsored this bill as well as the Fair Pay to Play Act five years ago: “SB 206 sparked a revolution in the multibillion-dollar industry of college sports. Today, student-athletes across the country are receiving compensation for their talent and hard work. That’s great news. But there has also been an increase in college sports boosters forming so-called ‘collectives’ and other strategies that appear to be benefitting men and once again shortchanging women athletes. SB 906 will shine a light on NIL and give us a better understanding of NIL’s impact on gender equity in college sports.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the bill, which will be sent to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, “appears to be aimed at trying to make collectives and schools (post-House) pay out NIL compensation to males and females more evenly. With data being publicly displayed, CA schools will be targets for Title IX litigation.” (link, link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown describes his experience watching the first game at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium and writes: “With a slight breeze coming off the lake, the view from nearly anywhere in the stadium complex is distractingly gorgeous. … The views might have helped create a different sort of problem, one that I imagine many athletic departments struggle with on some level. Northwestern Medicine Field was close to packed for the first half of the game, but the actual energy in the stadium was…lacking. Part of that was probably because the game was a defensive slugfest (Northwestern won, 13-6, in a game that was tied at 3 at halftime), so there weren’t a ton of huge plays to cheer for. But I suspect part of the other problem was that many other folks in that stadium that day weren’t there out of a deep and passionate love for either Northwestern or Miami (OH) football. Classes don’t start at Northwestern for another few weeks, so there weren’t that many students around, and I suspect we weren’t the only folks who scored free tickets through some university staff connection. It’s great to have a packed house of folks who wanted to enjoy the sunshine, lakefront views and craft beers. But maybe it’s harder to turn that crowd into an intimidating home-field advantage?” Brown notes there were other positives and negatives, including short wait times for concessions but difficulty finding the down and distance on any of the video or ribbon boards. Overall, Brown concludes it “was an experience I’d happily have again. Just maybe not in November.” (link)

A FootballScoop study of Power 4 starting QBs finds that 72% of opening-day starters are in their fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh year of college football while just 12% are in their first or second year. Meanwhile, 31 of the 68 began their careers during the Trump administration, and there are more QB1s in their seventh season (3) than their first (1). Also, 42 (62%) start QBs that did not sign with their current team out of high school. That is especially true in the Big Ten, where 14 of the 18 QB1s are transfers. By comparison, the SEC has the lowest number of starting QB transfers, with eight of the 16 having signed with their current program out of high school. FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett goes on to report: “Only nine of the 68 did not sign with a P4 school out of high school, and two of those come with asterisks: Dillon Gabriel signed with a school (UCF) that was not P4 at the time but is today, and Shedeur Sanders plays for his father.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro sits down with Puck’s John Ourand and explains that the 2018 launch of ESPN+ was done in part to get experience streaming live sports at scale as part of a ramp up to unveiling the Flagship DTC service. “And it’s all going according to plan. … We haven’t an established a price point yet, but that will be somewhere in between the current price of ESPN+, which is $11.99, and the price that you would pay to subscribe to Comcast or Charter or DirecTV. And the idea here is that…we want to be available everywhere across platforms and across price points.” Pitaro also explains that one of ESPN’s priorities is to “not just launch [Flagship] with the video. In other words, not just flip the switch and make the linear networks available over the top, direct-to-consumer. The idea here is that we have to launch with significant product enhancements. … We’ve been at this for a while here, so we are all-hands-on-deck now to take all of our digital expertise and put it into Flagship direct to consumer. And so when we do launch this thing, it will be with our significant product enhancements,” including ESPN Bet integration, fantasy integration, commerce integration and more. Aggregating local rights on Flagship is another area of interest, and Pitaro believes ESPN’s reach will make it easier to convince leagues to get on board. “I believe that most, if not all, leagues and conferences do recognize that value, and it's not just our studio programming…but it's it's digital and it's our news reporting capabilities And so when you think about local, in-market content and what's a great place to make it available, I think ESPN today…is a great place, but then fast forward to next year when we have Flagship.” Full podcast. The rapid pace of change in college sports means the structure of athletic departments may be “altogether unrecognizable within five years,” according to SBJ’s Terry Lefton, who adds: “More immediately, the revenue pressure has skyrocketed and new positions are being created and recruited, such as CROs or GMs of important revenue sports, like football and basketball.” TurnkeyZRG Chairman/CEO Len Perna tells Lefton the changes have already “totally altered the candidate pools for many collegiate positions and now include people who never would have been interested or included just a few years ago.” Excel Sports Management’s Nolan Partners President Chad Biagini points out, however, that the transfer of executive talent from pro to college isn’t simple. “You have a lot of people who assume they are your boss in that environment, so I would tell you that stakeholder management and the ability to bring them on the journey with you is essential for success in the college space. … In many of these new [collegiate] positions, a big and ongoing part of the college scene now is attracting the best athletes, which may have less to do with the school itself and more about who is running the programs.” Meanwhile, UTA’s James & Co./UTA Executive Search Founder Michele James comments on the way tech is impacting talent acquisition: “[Organizations] are preparing for things like AI and massive computing and filling those jobs with people who will absolutely need to impact revenue. They are looking for a faster booking or ticketing system and to speed up payment cycles. It’s changing to where the CTO is going from being the know-how office to the how-to revenue office.” (link)

The Mountain West has released a statement on the expiration of the deadline to extend the league’s scheduling partnership with Washington State and Oregon State: “The football scheduling arrangement with Oregon State and Washington State was a one-year agreement. For the 2025 season, the Mountain West and its member institutions are moving forward with their conference and non-conference schedules. Our focus remains on the current season and our exceptional teams.” The Athletic’s Chris Vannini on why he believes it’s unlikely the two sides will eventually reunite: “One reason is money. Oregon State and Washington State would rather not pay so much for six combined home games. The $14M this year comes out to $2.3M per home game, which is above the going rate for a non-conference home game. But it’s $1.16M for each total game, home or away, if you prefer to count that way, at a time when OSU and WSU need games and there are limited options. The Mountain West’s perspective is that it can take or leave a deal. … No deal, however, would take away from the G5-leading ‘Power 5’ matchups talking point in 2025, a case the league has made this season for its strength of schedule.” Vannini also notes OSU and WSU could ink individual agreements with certain Mountain West schools or look to the ACC. “Stanford has just two non-conference games listed publicly and a TBD ACC schedule. Cal has three, one of which is already at Oregon State and another at San Diego State. SMU similarly has three games listed, two on the road. Among the rest of the ACC, only a few schools have a public opening, like Duke, Miami (FL) and Pitt. It’s worth keeping in mind The CW has television deals with the Pac-12 and the ACC.” More from Vannini. (link)

The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen observes that Arizona AD Desireé Reed-Francois has changed the face of the Wildcats’ leadership team by bringing in six new Assoc. ADs from Missouri. “Let’s say this: She surely knows what she is getting. By comparison, former AD Dave Heeke brought in people from Austin Peay and Kansas, among others, to form the leadership of his staff. It didn’t work. One of the key upper-level staffers he inherited, Mike Ketcham, soon left for UNLV, of all places. In retrospect, it is probably a needed change. While, in my opinion, Heeke could hold his own with any AD in the old Pac-12, his staff was stocked with some robotic figures — those who did little to rescue the athletic department during a seven-year financial crisis or create a presence in the athletic community.” Hansen also notes Reed-Francois has “wisely kept” [Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA] Erika Barnes “who…I believe could be an athletic director if she chose to pursue that type of career.” (link)

New on Connect: Furman AD Jason Donnelly joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle after receiving the AD of the Year award and reflects on the highlights on and off the field from this past season as well as leading through change in today’s landscape. “More important than the change around you is understanding who you are: the mission, vision and values. It’s the Augustine quote, ‘Decisions are easier when values are clearer.’ … We know who we are. We know what our values are. We know what we’re going to emphasize, so we know what our model is going to be first. The second part of that is then analyze the change and see how either immediate it is or do we need do we have time to adjust? One of the things that we've been following – and Greg Sankey came out and said the other day – is it's okay for us all to proceed slowly through these changes and understand them. We operate in space where there's a permissive environment. We’re open to change. We want to see what those things are. We’re nimble enough in the ability to adapt and change, but at the same time we're not going to make this colossal change into the things that we don't know. … What we do know is how important the academic mission is, how important being Division I is, and how important it is for us to be competitive.” (link)

Former Boston College Women’s Tennis AC Karen McNamara is suing the school and Women’s Tennis HC Nigel Bentley for gender discrimination, fostering a hostile work environment and violating of the Wage Act after BC let her go in May 2023. McNamara also argues that her termination was retaliatory for voicing complaints about Bentley. From the suit: “Despite Ms. McNamara’s repeated complaints to BC officials and administrators, BC failed to remedy the situation. Instead, Ms. McNamara was unlawfully terminated in retaliation.” The suit also contends that “upon information and belief, Coach Bentley was threatened by Ms. McNamara’s tennis pedigree and her family’s ties to BC. He perceived Ms. McNamara, an accomplished and confident professional woman, as a threat to his position. … Coach Bentley would sit directly behind and very close to Ms. McNamara’s desk in an intimidating manner. He would also often speak to her with one foot up on his chair while in shorts, risking exposing himself.” (link)

Iowa State Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Nick Joos and Arkansas Chief Public Relations Officer Kevin Trainor sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on the evolution of athletics communications. Joos and Trainor discuss the shift in storytelling power from traditional media outlets to a department’s own team of content creators who produce efficient and engaging stories across a variety of channels. The duo also shares insight into the role a communications staff can play in expanding NIL opportunities for student-athletes, the challenges of segmenting an audience for marketing purposes, and the importance of internal communication. Trainor explains that the Razorbacks’ content team works to communicate effectively not just externally, but also internally. “There are a lot of folks in this industry that need to understand what's going on, whether it's helping your athletics director, your conference commissioner…even some of the staff that may not be following or understand how these things will affect what they're doing.” Joos adds: “As NIL continues to evolve, as we get into the revenue-sharing model, that ability to tell that story is going to be more important than ever so that we can generate the resources to handle all the things that are coming at us on a regular basis.” Joos also explains the Cyclones have moved away from offering traditional media guides, instead producing slimmed-down versions of a given program’s historical achievements that are printed in limited quantities. “Your website has almost become the historical repository. That’s the library and that’s that media guide that has a lot of that information.” More on ADU. (link)

The New York Times’ Joe Drape and Allison McCann, citing data provided by Opendorse, report it can cost “as much as $10.5M for a title-contending starting offense and defense in the new Power 4 conferences.” Broken down by position average, they note a starting P4 QB can expect to make $820K, a starting wide receiver can expect $610K, and offensive and defensive linemen can earn $550K and $470K, respectively. Linebackers can expect $440K, defensive backs $410K and running backs $340K. Some of the highest earners include Texas QB Quinn Ewers ($1.7M), Longhorns QB Arch Manning ($3.1M), and Georgia QB Carson Beck ($1.4M). Drape and McCann note that Beck “brings in enough that he recently bought a Lamborghini that retails for $270K.” Opendorse CEO Blake Lawrence: “By nature, athletes are disciplined and purpose-driven. What has been really cool to see is how many athletes on our platform, especially the women, lean into the opportunities to be creative and build a brand. They don’t want to get paid just for going to practice and games.” Among female student-athletes, Drape and McCann note LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne ($3.9M) and Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers ($1.4M) are among the highest-paid. (link); Also from Lawrence: “These numbers are from January ’24, and they’ve risen by 25.1% since then.” (link)

Georgia will name the updated press box inside Sanford Stadium after former Tennis HC/SID/Bulldog Club Executive Secretary Dan Magill and former longtime SID Claude Felton. Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks: “Along with Vince Dooley, it would be hard to find two people who have meant more to Georgia Athletics than Dan Magill and Claude Felton. Coach Magill and Claude combined to serve this university for nearly a century. We are pleased to honor their remarkable accomplishments with the naming of the 400 and 500 levels of the new press box.” (link)
