More from new Northwestern AD Mark Jackson’s introductory press conference, where he acknowledged he may have to help the school heal. “As I mentioned to my staff this morning, doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it's always right. We're going to commit to that. Are we going to be perfect? Probably not. But we're going to proactively educate around the pitfalls around everything, whether that's academic integrity, you look at gambling, to what consent means on a college campus." Jackson also emphasized the "uncompromising philosophy" of "treating each other well" and promised to examine how Northwestern oversees each team. "When you're a head coach overseeing 110 football players versus a lacrosse team that may have 26 women, the challenges are different. Each program, I think, requires nuances. We want somebody immersed in that program to work with the head coach. Whether that's fundraising, whether that's compliance, whether it's ticketing, the academic piece. I want our administrators in the weeds and connected to each and every program." (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair joins the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to discuss being a “modern athletic director,” game day improvements for this football season, and how he and his team solicit feedback and think critically about their game day management, whether more sitting ADs from lower subdivisions will move to Power 4 Deputy AD posts in the future and more. Blair also talks about making sure donations are properly vetted and notes that “You’ve got to be careful not to rush out. All money is not good money, nothing in life is free. … But I will say this on the flipside, I think we’re all searching for new revenue streams. We’re all trying to be more creative than ever in terms of our donor mechanisms. We’ve had a lot of conversations about donations coming in and how maybe we use insurance to elevate the impact of gifts long-term and how you can utilize different methods to kind of increase a level of giving. If you give five, how can I turn that into seven via some creativity?” Blair also discusses the Rockets’ relationship with the Toledo Blade and explains: “The search committee asked me a lot about relationships with media because the relationship with the Blade had not been good for the university as a whole. I think going back 10-15 years ago, it was really bad, actually, a lot of negativity swirling around it. A lot of things said between the two parties is my understanding. And so they were like how are you gonna handle that?” Blair notes he received plenty of practice building relationships with the media thanks to his time at Washington State with the late, former Football HC Mike Leach, and it boils down to understanding journalists have a job to do. “If we do something wrong or we’re off on something, hold me accountable. It is what it is. It comes with the territory. On the flip side, when we do things really well and/or we’re trying to spread a story, help us tell that story, and be a part of telling that story, and being willing to give them the tools and the access to do that.” Lots more. Eastern Michigan AD Scott Wetherbee joins the Ross Martin podcast to discuss his career path, facilities projects at EMU, fundraising, hiring coaches and more. Wetherbee on why EMU was the right place for him despite initially not wanting to move north: “If you really want to truly have an opportunity, you can't really limit yourself. So, the Central Michigan job came open, the Eastern Michigan job came open. I’ll tell you that Eastern Michigan took the approach of ‘We're going to hire a search firm and keep it quiet and not get names out there’ and Central Michigan was more public. … I'm a people person, I don't mind doing that; I just didn't want my name to be out like I'm trying to find jobs unless I felt like it was a great opportunity. You don't want all of a sudden to be that guy or gal [whose] name is in every opening and then [people begin realizing] he ain't getting any of them.” On the topic of fundraising, Wetherbee says one of the best compliments he’s received from donors is that he treats EMU like he went to school there. “I’m not trying to take their money and go get another job. I'm trying to take what they're giving to do stuff that's right for our institution to help better Eastern Michigan as a whole and I think when people genuinely can see that you care like that it makes life a lot easier.” Lots more. La Salle President Daniel J. Allen sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the future of higher education and the role athletics can play in defining and enhancing a university’s mission, the impact of basketball on the La Salle experience and how it will continue to serve as a recruiting and retention tool for the institution, the process of hiring Explorers AD Ash Puri, and navigating the pace of change in both the higher education and athletics landscapes from within a complex organization. Allen says he and Puri have an “open borders relationship whereby when he needs me, he can get to me and when I need him I can get to him. It’s been really responsive. The other thing that I've said to him is ‘I need you to argue with me’ and I've said this to him directly ‘I need you to push back.’ This doesn't mean that I'm going to do exactly what you want me to do, but it's important to me and it’s important to our relationship that he feels comfortable saying, ‘Dan, I disagree with you on this’ and ‘Dan, this is why we need to do this.’ So, giving him permission to really push back on me is an important part of our relationship.” Allen also says of the importance of alignment and adhering to the university’s core values: “Leaning into mission is first and foremost. Understanding who you are, understanding what you do that is an important contribution to higher education, an important contribution to the students and families you serve, and when you get it right, you lean into that mission.” Full interview on ADU. As bowl game operators continue to find ways to combat the impact of opt-outs and an expanded College Football Playoff, Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan submits that “conference commissioners ought to look at doing games in the front side of the season, like we've done with matchups between the [Power Four] conferences. Just like in basketball, where you have ACC versus Big Ten, schedule the Big Four – the Big 12 plays the ACC, the SEC plays the Big Ten – and schedule those games at the bowl sites at the beginning of the year, which would be tremendous for college football. … I've told my bowl brethren that they should do this. If you look at what's happening at the end of the year – potentially even more so with the 12-team playoff – how many more opt-outs are you going to get at the end of the season?" Stokan adds: “Take two teams – Iowa versus Ole Miss – you put that in Nashville, and Iowa and Ole Miss are both in the top 20, you know the fans are going to go to the game because they haven't seen college football in nine months. At the end of the season, if those two teams are 8-4 [or] 7-5, how many people are excited about those games as much as you would be if you're undefeated at the beginning of the season, first game of the year?” (link)

Blenders Eyewear continues to benefit from its relationship with Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders, and Founder/CEO Chase Fisher tells Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey: “Just from last year, we’ve sold over 200K Deion Sanders pairs.” Last fall, Blenders received roughly 70K pre-orders of the Prime sunglasses before the collection went on sale. At $67 a pair, the company booked more than $4.5M in revenue, and Fisher says: “We saw a very large influx during the season last year. Once they started to lose a little bit more, things got a little bit slower.” Moving forward, Fisher says of Sanders: “He’s a stepping stone, he’s been a juggernaut the last year and a half, and we’re just getting started with him. So, we’re excited to see where this can go. He’s definitely responsible for a good chunk from last year, but it’s not as much as people think.” Overall, Blenders has now sold more than 200K of the Prime shades, bringing in revenue of over $13M. Northwestern officially introduced AD Mark Jackson today, and in his opening remarks, Jackson addressed the importance of academics at Northwestern: “Consider these achievements from just the 2023-24 academic year: a graduation rate of 98%...which led the Big Ten for the 19th consecutive year. Wildcats leading the Big Ten with 278 Academic All-Big Ten honors." He went on to ask: “Why should Northwestern take any approach to athletics other than try to be in the top echelon nationally? We are well on our way. We will utilize our best assets...to recruit and retain the next great generation of student-athletes. … No idea is too small. We will increase revenues through current streams and implement new ones. … I have a lot of listening to do, and a lot of watching. … Our athletic department will reflect the rest of the university. When we wear that Northwestern on our chest, we will wear it with honor." On navigating the changing landscape, Jackson remarked: “The word that I keep coming back to is alignment. We have to be aligned from President Schill to the board to the athletic department if we're going to have success in this new era.” Also: “When you think about my experience in the NFL, the bottom line is generating revenue. We're not built that way. That's why we have to look at our department differently. … Pat Ryan Jr. and I have spent the last few days looking at the plans for the stadium. … We're looking at it in a very innovative way, much like an NFL organization, for how we're going to structure that." More from Jackson. (link)

Lawyers for plaintiffs in a lawsuit concerning Ivy League schools’ refusal to award athletic scholarships have withdrawn their opposition to the proposed House settlement, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who explains: “This comes after both sides involved in proposed House settlement made written clarifications and adjustments stating that the claims in the Ivy League case would not be affected by the settlement.” (link)

Meanwhile, lawyers who had been representing six current and former women's rowers in an opposition to proposed House settlement have made a new filing in which they say one of the six has dropped opposition, but they have added five more athletes who do oppose the settlement. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “Per this filing, the new athlete opponents to the settlement comprise 2 current women's volleyball players, 2 former women's swim and dive team members and another former rower.” (link)

A letter sent to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey by DirecTV Head of State & Global Affairs Hamlin Wade reads, in part: “Disney’s unwillingness to evolve will significantly accelerate the decline of Pay TV. … We can smoothly transition to a new service model to give customers more choice, control and value to complement Disney and other programmers’ streaming offerings, delivering a new solution where everyone wins. We’re asking you to please work with your Chancellors and Presidents and your elected officials to empower fans and push for flexibility in the marketplace.” Full letter. (link)

The Sun Belt has admitted an officiating error resulted in a late go-ahead touchdown for Arkansas State in its 34-31 win over Central Arkansas. “The Sun Belt Conference, upon review of the complete pass call with 3 seconds remaining in the Central Arkansas at Arkansas State football game, has announced an incorrect application of the replay review process. The replay official was focused on the firm control and body part down aspects of the act of a catch and failed to evaluate the surviving the ground aspect of a catch during the review of the play in question. The right end zone camera shows the receiver did not survive the ground, but this camera angle was not consulted by the replay official. The replay ruling should have confirmed the on-field call of an incomplete pass.” Had the correct on-field call stood, Arkansas State would have had time for one more play from the 7-yard line. The California Senate passed SB906 unanimously last week, a bill which would require collectives to give schools data on NIL deals of $5K or more and compel schools to publicly display the value of NIL services they provide both by sport and gender. Schools will also have to publicly display their revenue-share distributions by sport and gender. Senator Nancy Skinner (D-9), who sponsored this bill as well as the Fair Pay to Play Act five years ago: “SB 206 sparked a revolution in the multibillion-dollar industry of college sports. Today, student-athletes across the country are receiving compensation for their talent and hard work. That’s great news. But there has also been an increase in college sports boosters forming so-called ‘collectives’ and other strategies that appear to be benefitting men and once again shortchanging women athletes. SB 906 will shine a light on NIL and give us a better understanding of NIL’s impact on gender equity in college sports.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the bill, which will be sent to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk, “appears to be aimed at trying to make collectives and schools (post-House) pay out NIL compensation to males and females more evenly. With data being publicly displayed, CA schools will be targets for Title IX litigation.” (link, link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown describes his experience watching the first game at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium and writes: “With a slight breeze coming off the lake, the view from nearly anywhere in the stadium complex is distractingly gorgeous. … The views might have helped create a different sort of problem, one that I imagine many athletic departments struggle with on some level. Northwestern Medicine Field was close to packed for the first half of the game, but the actual energy in the stadium was…lacking. Part of that was probably because the game was a defensive slugfest (Northwestern won, 13-6, in a game that was tied at 3 at halftime), so there weren’t a ton of huge plays to cheer for. But I suspect part of the other problem was that many other folks in that stadium that day weren’t there out of a deep and passionate love for either Northwestern or Miami (OH) football. Classes don’t start at Northwestern for another few weeks, so there weren’t that many students around, and I suspect we weren’t the only folks who scored free tickets through some university staff connection. It’s great to have a packed house of folks who wanted to enjoy the sunshine, lakefront views and craft beers. But maybe it’s harder to turn that crowd into an intimidating home-field advantage?” Brown notes there were other positives and negatives, including short wait times for concessions but difficulty finding the down and distance on any of the video or ribbon boards. Overall, Brown concludes it “was an experience I’d happily have again. Just maybe not in November.” (link)

A FootballScoop study of Power 4 starting QBs finds that 72% of opening-day starters are in their fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh year of college football while just 12% are in their first or second year. Meanwhile, 31 of the 68 began their careers during the Trump administration, and there are more QB1s in their seventh season (3) than their first (1). Also, 42 (62%) start QBs that did not sign with their current team out of high school. That is especially true in the Big Ten, where 14 of the 18 QB1s are transfers. By comparison, the SEC has the lowest number of starting QB transfers, with eight of the 16 having signed with their current program out of high school. FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett goes on to report: “Only nine of the 68 did not sign with a P4 school out of high school, and two of those come with asterisks: Dillon Gabriel signed with a school (UCF) that was not P4 at the time but is today, and Shedeur Sanders plays for his father.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro sits down with Puck’s John Ourand and explains that the 2018 launch of ESPN+ was done in part to get experience streaming live sports at scale as part of a ramp up to unveiling the Flagship DTC service. “And it’s all going according to plan. … We haven’t an established a price point yet, but that will be somewhere in between the current price of ESPN+, which is $11.99, and the price that you would pay to subscribe to Comcast or Charter or DirecTV. And the idea here is that…we want to be available everywhere across platforms and across price points.” Pitaro also explains that one of ESPN’s priorities is to “not just launch [Flagship] with the video. In other words, not just flip the switch and make the linear networks available over the top, direct-to-consumer. The idea here is that we have to launch with significant product enhancements. … We’ve been at this for a while here, so we are all-hands-on-deck now to take all of our digital expertise and put it into Flagship direct to consumer. And so when we do launch this thing, it will be with our significant product enhancements,” including ESPN Bet integration, fantasy integration, commerce integration and more. Aggregating local rights on Flagship is another area of interest, and Pitaro believes ESPN’s reach will make it easier to convince leagues to get on board. “I believe that most, if not all, leagues and conferences do recognize that value, and it's not just our studio programming…but it's it's digital and it's our news reporting capabilities And so when you think about local, in-market content and what's a great place to make it available, I think ESPN today…is a great place, but then fast forward to next year when we have Flagship.” Full podcast.
