NCAA leaders are looking to hire outside entities to oversee post-House management and enforcement systems, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports, adding that “power conference officials have seen presentations from some of the world’s largest professional service providers, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers” and “leaders are in the process of selecting outside companies to oversee a cap management reporting system; regulate a clearinghouse for third-party endorsement/NIL deals; and enforce existing NCAA rules, such as those against pay-for-play, etc.” Meanwhile, House plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman remains confident U.S. Judge Claudia Wilken will grant preliminary approval of the settlement, telling Dellenger: “We’re very positive she’s going to overrule the [Fontenot] objections. There could be minor changes.” While the settlement requires student-athletes to report their outside compensation, it does not require the approval of deals through any governing body or clearinghouse. As such, NCAA and power conference leaders are establishing a clearinghouse and enforcement entity on their own, and Berman comments: “The NCAA has indicated that it may change its enforcement bureaucracy or may even outsource it. Frankly, we don’t care if they do that or don’t do that. That’s up to them.” As for the clearinghouse attempting to reject deals between collectives and athletes, Berman says: “We’ll see what the NCAA tries to impose. The NIL [collectives] have not agreed to anything. If the NCAA tries to punish a student or school, if they try to take action against an NIL [collective], I think they’ll probably see that NIL organization in court.” More. (link)

Athletes.org issues a statement supporting the House settlement while urging schools to negotiate with their student-athletes per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. From the statement: “The next step, after the settlement is approved, is for individual schools to work with AO to hear the voice of their athletes and discuss what resources and benefits are the most important to provide them. An authentic partnership between each school and their athletes is paramount. AO supports this settlement because of the new benefits and compensation it immediately unlocks for many college athletes, and because it can be the catalyst for the schools to do what is right, both for their athletes and their institution – negotiating the terms of athlete participation, through Athletes.org to finally achieve a true partnership.” Read the complete statement. The ACC has asked the North Carolina Supreme Court to streamline its litigation against Florida State and Clemson, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, who reports the conference suggests in a legal filing that the schools’ appeals processes should follow the same schedule, including having oral arguments on the same day. Baker adds: “Though the ACC’s suits against FSU and Clemson are separate, they center on the same documents (the ACC’s grant of rights and TV contracts) and arguments (sovereign immunity for public schools based in other states). The proposed timeline: briefs by the schools in October, briefs by the ACC in December and replies by the schools on or before mid-January.” (link)

As the ACC begins the first season under its new success initiative revenue distribution model, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham tells the AP’s Aaron Beard: “We’re seeing more and more of a movement toward if you generate it, you get it. You’re seeing that within leagues, by the conference affiliations and those changes. You’re seeing it more within sports programs, that ‘If I generate it, I should get it.’ So all of this is following that natural pattern. And we’re trying to deal with that while trying to keep a league together and make the league competitive from top to bottom.” NC State Football HC Dave Doeren adds: “It’s a great opportunity for the teams that succeed and put the product on the field. That’s what it’s about, earning who you are on the grass. ... And now you’re getting money for your program when you do that.” Beard notes that under the new model, teams can earn $4M for an appearance in the College Football Playoff, another $4M for reaching the second round, $6M for reaching the semifinals and another $6M for reaching the title game – a total of $20M. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips explains: “That grows as we go forward because those other numbers grow, and the CFP dollars grow.” Wake Forest Football HC Dave Clawson also weighs in: “I think anything the ACC can do as a conference to encourage investment in football, it would probably be a wise move for the league. Clearly, right now in the business of college athletics, football is the driver.” (link)

After criticizing the MAC’s decision to add Massachusetts, the Toledo Blade’s David Briggs talks with Minutemen AD Ryan Bamford, who explains that while UMass has enjoyed success in men’s basketball and hockey, football drives everything. “[Decisions] are not being made outside of football conferences. We didn’t have that vote. We didn’t have the ability to have our voice heard.” If all goes according to plan, UMass’ presence in a football conference will help lift the entire department, and Bamford notes: “We had 13,000 for our game here against Eastern Michigan on Saturday. There aren’t a lot of things that draw 13,000 people to campus or anything in Western Massachusetts for a three-hour period of time. Football can be the front porch of an institution. We have a strong desire to position our football program appropriately to compete for championships.” Given UMass’ previous difficulties in the MAC and other hurdles to building a successful football program, Briggs asks why the Minutemen don’t return to FCS and continue to compete in the Atlantic 10 in other sports. Bamford replies: “We’re extremely aspirational. We’ve seen it in our academic profile…and we want athletics to complement the academic and research pedigree, to be the front porch. If you look across state flagship schools, 43 of the 50 are in the Football Bowl Subdivision. That’s an important aspect of growing our university. At a time when there are less college-aged students coming into age in the next 10 years, athletics can be a vehicle to get people to engage with the institution.” (link)

Recruiting violations occurred in the SMU women's swimming program when HC Ozzie Quevedo impermissibly contacted a transfer prospect and her family prior to the student-athlete entering the transfer portal, according to an agreement released by the Committee on Infractions. All sides have agreed to Level II-mitigated penalties for SMU and Level II-standard penalties for Quevedo. Those penalties include one year of probation; a one year show-cause for Quevedo, during which Quevedo must be restricted from attending practice for 15 consecutive days for the 2024-25 championship season and must attend the 2025 NCAA Regional Rules Seminar at his own expense; and a four-week prohibition in recruiting communications in the women's swimming and diving program, among others. South Carolina Football HC Shane Beamer weighs in on mandatory player availability reports and admits: “I'm kind of indifferent, I'll be honest with you. Certainly, I will see a list of what we’re going to submit, how we are listing our players (available, questionable, out), but it's not like I’m going to be spending a lot of time on it. I've always kind of been one of those guys, it is what it is, not super-secretive about that kind of stuff. If it's an injury, get it out there. The guys know.” Georgia HC Kirby Smart adds: “I think it will go well. I think it’s equitable, at least across our conference, and takes the pressure off of the reporting for the coaches, at least in our world, to our training staff. Takes the pressure off from a gambling perspective. Anything that puts our student-athletes at a risk, that they might…be manipulated for information, they might be used to try to gather stuff. If it’s open and if it’s out there, certainly makes it more equitable.” (link)

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and Disney Entertainment Co-Chairs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman have released a new statement concerning the distribution dispute with DirecTV: “DirecTV continues to misrepresent the facts around our ongoing negotiations. Our priority is to reach a marketplace deal that serves the needs of DirecTV and their customers while also recognizing the value of our top-quality content and the significant investment required to create and acquire it. We believe there is a path to a fair and flexible agreement that strikes this critical balance and works for all sides, especially the consumer.” (link)

The ACC is partnering with gaming technology firm Rally Cry to create the Rally Cry Championship Tour, which features a 10-week league in which individuals will play College Football 25 online as well as a mobile gaming truck visiting college campuses weekly where fans can compete in-person for a piece of the prize pool and a custom championship trophy. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: "We are thrilled to partner with Rally Cry for many stops along the season-long championship tour, and be part of this innovative approach that will bring a new level of entertainment to college football for our schools and fans. In addition to the tour stops, we thank Rally Cry and our partners at Raycom/ACCDN, in providing the 'ACCDN Game of the Week' stream that will offer our fans even more exciting opportunities to cheer on their favorite ACC teams every week." The in-person tour starts Saturday before the kickoff of the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. (link)

More from new Northwestern AD Mark Jackson’s introductory press conference, where he acknowledged he may have to help the school heal. “As I mentioned to my staff this morning, doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it's always right. We're going to commit to that. Are we going to be perfect? Probably not. But we're going to proactively educate around the pitfalls around everything, whether that's academic integrity, you look at gambling, to what consent means on a college campus." Jackson also emphasized the "uncompromising philosophy" of "treating each other well" and promised to examine how Northwestern oversees each team. "When you're a head coach overseeing 110 football players versus a lacrosse team that may have 26 women, the challenges are different. Each program, I think, requires nuances. We want somebody immersed in that program to work with the head coach. Whether that's fundraising, whether that's compliance, whether it's ticketing, the academic piece. I want our administrators in the weeds and connected to each and every program." (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair joins the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to discuss being a “modern athletic director,” game day improvements for this football season, and how he and his team solicit feedback and think critically about their game day management, whether more sitting ADs from lower subdivisions will move to Power 4 Deputy AD posts in the future and more. Blair also talks about making sure donations are properly vetted and notes that “You’ve got to be careful not to rush out. All money is not good money, nothing in life is free. … But I will say this on the flipside, I think we’re all searching for new revenue streams. We’re all trying to be more creative than ever in terms of our donor mechanisms. We’ve had a lot of conversations about donations coming in and how maybe we use insurance to elevate the impact of gifts long-term and how you can utilize different methods to kind of increase a level of giving. If you give five, how can I turn that into seven via some creativity?” Blair also discusses the Rockets’ relationship with the Toledo Blade and explains: “The search committee asked me a lot about relationships with media because the relationship with the Blade had not been good for the university as a whole. I think going back 10-15 years ago, it was really bad, actually, a lot of negativity swirling around it. A lot of things said between the two parties is my understanding. And so they were like how are you gonna handle that?” Blair notes he received plenty of practice building relationships with the media thanks to his time at Washington State with the late, former Football HC Mike Leach, and it boils down to understanding journalists have a job to do. “If we do something wrong or we’re off on something, hold me accountable. It is what it is. It comes with the territory. On the flip side, when we do things really well and/or we’re trying to spread a story, help us tell that story, and be a part of telling that story, and being willing to give them the tools and the access to do that.” Lots more. Eastern Michigan AD Scott Wetherbee joins the Ross Martin podcast to discuss his career path, facilities projects at EMU, fundraising, hiring coaches and more. Wetherbee on why EMU was the right place for him despite initially not wanting to move north: “If you really want to truly have an opportunity, you can't really limit yourself. So, the Central Michigan job came open, the Eastern Michigan job came open. I’ll tell you that Eastern Michigan took the approach of ‘We're going to hire a search firm and keep it quiet and not get names out there’ and Central Michigan was more public. … I'm a people person, I don't mind doing that; I just didn't want my name to be out like I'm trying to find jobs unless I felt like it was a great opportunity. You don't want all of a sudden to be that guy or gal [whose] name is in every opening and then [people begin realizing] he ain't getting any of them.” On the topic of fundraising, Wetherbee says one of the best compliments he’s received from donors is that he treats EMU like he went to school there. “I’m not trying to take their money and go get another job. I'm trying to take what they're giving to do stuff that's right for our institution to help better Eastern Michigan as a whole and I think when people genuinely can see that you care like that it makes life a lot easier.” Lots more. La Salle President Daniel J. Allen sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the future of higher education and the role athletics can play in defining and enhancing a university’s mission, the impact of basketball on the La Salle experience and how it will continue to serve as a recruiting and retention tool for the institution, the process of hiring Explorers AD Ash Puri, and navigating the pace of change in both the higher education and athletics landscapes from within a complex organization. Allen says he and Puri have an “open borders relationship whereby when he needs me, he can get to me and when I need him I can get to him. It’s been really responsive. The other thing that I've said to him is ‘I need you to argue with me’ and I've said this to him directly ‘I need you to push back.’ This doesn't mean that I'm going to do exactly what you want me to do, but it's important to me and it’s important to our relationship that he feels comfortable saying, ‘Dan, I disagree with you on this’ and ‘Dan, this is why we need to do this.’ So, giving him permission to really push back on me is an important part of our relationship.” Allen also says of the importance of alignment and adhering to the university’s core values: “Leaning into mission is first and foremost. Understanding who you are, understanding what you do that is an important contribution to higher education, an important contribution to the students and families you serve, and when you get it right, you lean into that mission.” Full interview on ADU. As bowl game operators continue to find ways to combat the impact of opt-outs and an expanded College Football Playoff, Peach Bowl CEO Gary Stokan submits that “conference commissioners ought to look at doing games in the front side of the season, like we've done with matchups between the [Power Four] conferences. Just like in basketball, where you have ACC versus Big Ten, schedule the Big Four – the Big 12 plays the ACC, the SEC plays the Big Ten – and schedule those games at the bowl sites at the beginning of the year, which would be tremendous for college football. … I've told my bowl brethren that they should do this. If you look at what's happening at the end of the year – potentially even more so with the 12-team playoff – how many more opt-outs are you going to get at the end of the season?" Stokan adds: “Take two teams – Iowa versus Ole Miss – you put that in Nashville, and Iowa and Ole Miss are both in the top 20, you know the fans are going to go to the game because they haven't seen college football in nine months. At the end of the season, if those two teams are 8-4 [or] 7-5, how many people are excited about those games as much as you would be if you're undefeated at the beginning of the season, first game of the year?” (link)

Blenders Eyewear continues to benefit from its relationship with Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders, and Founder/CEO Chase Fisher tells Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey: “Just from last year, we’ve sold over 200K Deion Sanders pairs.” Last fall, Blenders received roughly 70K pre-orders of the Prime sunglasses before the collection went on sale. At $67 a pair, the company booked more than $4.5M in revenue, and Fisher says: “We saw a very large influx during the season last year. Once they started to lose a little bit more, things got a little bit slower.” Moving forward, Fisher says of Sanders: “He’s a stepping stone, he’s been a juggernaut the last year and a half, and we’re just getting started with him. So, we’re excited to see where this can go. He’s definitely responsible for a good chunk from last year, but it’s not as much as people think.” Overall, Blenders has now sold more than 200K of the Prime shades, bringing in revenue of over $13M.
