More from Michigan AD Warde Manuel’s interview with The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb in which Manuel addresses the pattern of leaks about NCAA investigations of Michigan: “Well, first of all, I think it is wholly unacceptable and ridiculous that people who have the information, or get information about what's going on are leaking it to the press and to the public. And we try to find it. We just don't let it pass. We actively try to find where these leaks are coming from. Particularly if it’s us. The problem, Sam, as you know, is it's hard to get to the bottom of it. Doesn't mean we're going to stop trying. Because it really does not help the process. It doesn't help the University of Michigan to go through it. It doesn't help the NCAA. … In some cases, some of it is wrong…some of it I can't respond to when it's wrong…but people are leaking things out there about the case. It is just disappointing, unnecessary, and sad." Manuel also discusses the Wolverines’ cautious approach to NIL at the beginning and points out there was already an NCAA investigation underway at the time. “So, what are we supposed to do, go out and be ultra-aggressive, break rules? At a time when we’re being investigated for breaking rules? So, yeah, we didn’t push the envelope like others pushed it because we were dealing with something in terms of the investigation where if we started to violate more rules now, we’re adding to the rules violation. … The second side is we didn’t have that culture. And we still have folks who find it unacceptable to give money to student-athletes. I keep saying to our donor base, ‘It’s okay. It is legal now. But you have to remember I played for a coach in Bo Schembechler who would scare anybody who tried to give his players anything. So, we have started to shift the culture of people understanding that it’s okay to support our student-athletes.” Lots more. (link)

Indiana State AD Nathan Christensen joins the Sycamore Sitdown to discuss his first couple months in Terre Haute and notes that for the most part he’s been in the listening tour phase. “It’s really understanding where we need to go as a department. Even outside the chaos of the NCAA and what's going on in our world, we can still control our attitude or effort and getting after it. But it also comes down to I needed to build those relationships. I need people to trust me. I need to understand where people's minds are at internally and externally and how we can continue to grow this thing. But that was really my mindset coming into this thing because I need to set the path forward to build those relationships in a quick fashion, because Terre Haute’s not small, but in a smaller community everyone knows everyone and honestly that was a focus of mine.” Christensen also talks about the importance of building relationships within the department, particularly among coaches to find out specifically what they need to advance their programs. “I need to know those things because if I have a conversation with a donor or someone on campus that we might have access to, if it's something for student welfare, I need to be able to have those things in my mind.” Also from Christensen: “I’m a big believer in broad-based success. If you look at some of those programs that they might be really good men's basketball or just football or just volleyball, that's awesome, but I want everyone to be successful, and that's why I kind of go back to the [Missouri Valley] all-sports trophy. That is ultimately my goal each and every year.” More. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake provides more information on the Pac-12’s football scheduling plans as the deadline has passed to extend a deal with the Mountain West. Per a source: “We’re too far apart.” More key points from Canzano: “Nothing is imminent. Cool your jets on the ‘OSU/WSU to the Big 12!!’ talk or ‘The Cougs and Beavs are about to announce they’re going to the ACC!!’ Manage the expectations. However, this likely means the Pac-12 schools have confidence that they can piece together a 2025 schedule that features more P4 opponents. [...] Is it possible the Pac-12 and ACC (or another P4 conference) could be eyeing some kind of football scheduling partnership for 2025? Sure. That’s where my mind went on Sunday, but I’m being told that whatever comes next could take some time to put together.” (link)
|
Sticking in the Pacific Northwest as Canzano also reports Oregon is “knee deep” in researching the possible addition of thousands of premium-level seating options at Autzen Stadium. Ducks AD Rob Mullens: “We have great club seats. We have outstanding suites. But there are other new products that people are interested in and we probably need to meet that demand. [...] That north side obviously needs some work with points of sale for concessions and restroom availability. If we met those needs and added a few thousand seats that would be great — but we won’t lead with it.” Mullens has taken a close look at Utah’s upgrades to Rice-Eccles Stadium, the Texas Live! buildout at the Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Field, as well as the Detroit Tigers’ Comerica Park. Like Oregon, Miami (FL) Football’s NIL infrastructure has been heralded by many as one of the best across the industry. The Canes’ performance at Florida on Saturday only served to bolster that belief. Canes Connection Co-Founder Zach Burr: “It's been a three-year process of Mario's sweat and blood and everything else to try to rebuild this roster. For us to be able to play a small part in helping him to do that days like [Saturday] validate all the hard work. [...] When you bring in someone like Mario who is an elite recruiter, if you don't give him the resources what's the point of bringing him in? You can't bring in talent unless you have a solid NIL program [...] Ohio State, you saw what they did in the transfer portal. We kind of did the same thing. In modern day college football, you're not going to be competitive if you don't have full alignment on your NIL.” (link)

Last night’s LSU-USC showdown from Las Vegas averaged 9.2M viewers with a peak at 11.1M. It was also the most-streamed college football game ever for ABC. Of additional note from ESPN PR: “ABC scored its second-most-watched Week 1 on record with 8.0M viewers across 4 games.” (link)

Oklahoma has added a tradition at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as the Sooners will pay tribute to native Oklahoman, longtime Sooner supporter and Country Music Hall of Famer Toby Keith, who passed away from cancer back in February. Keith’s family did the honors at last Friday’s season-opener as they were welcomed on the field before the fourth quarter to lead the singing of Keith’s song “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue.” Check it out. VP for ESPN Bet and ESPN Fantasy Mike Morrison says ESPN Bet is “tracking very much along expectations” despite having secured just 2.8% of the market during its first year. Sharp Alpha Advisors Managing Partner Lloyd Danzig points out ESPN Bet has made strides to put it in the ballpark of the second-tier of sportsbooks, while the opportunity to capitalize on its brand is still on the table. “ESPN Bet has achieved a hold rate and parlay mix that meets or exceeds levels seen at BetMGM and Caesars, while still lagging significantly behind DraftKings and FanDuel. Market share remains muted compared to initial investor expectations, though the media side of ESPN has shown clear signs of more aggressively integrating betting into core user flows.” Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao explains that “for Year 2 and beyond, ESPN is betting on a strategy taken from the world of Apple and Google. The media giant is creating an ecosystem around the ESPN app, ESPN Bet, and ESPN Fantasy in which the accounts are now interconnected. For example, if a user drafts Patrick Mahomes on their fantasy team, they will receive enhanced prop bets for Mahomes during game day. … On the other hand, DraftKings and FanDuel are looking to do the reverse of ESPN by expanding from an online sports betting and fantasy platform and into content machines. And even Fanatics, who acquired PointsBet last year, is still hoping to build its own ecosystem tied with merchandise and collectibles.” (link)

The NCAA is considering applying football’s redshirt rule to all sports, according Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports discussions are also underway to allow student-athletes to earn prize money before enrolling in college and to eliminate the National Letter of Intent. “The potential changes are part of what is expected to be a year-long comprehensive review of NCAA athlete-eligibility rules to reflect and operationalize the House settlement terms, according to documents obtained by Yahoo Sports. The documents will be reviewed this coming week during a video call of the NCAA Division I Council.” Dellenger also reports that similar recruiting rules tied to NLIs will continue via the signing of school aid agreements, which officially end a prospect’s recruitment. “For instance, all communication with the signed prospect and family members must end, and the prospects are prohibited from signing more than one aid agreement prior to enrollment.” Another change under consideration would allow student-athletes and recruits to “utilize the services of agents when pursuing professional opportunities without jeopardizing their intercollegiate eligibility.” The new rule would grant agents more access to student-athletes on professional endeavors. The departure of former Rutgers AD Pat Hobbs “raises uncomfortable questions for the high-level university officials like President Jonathan Holloway who had hoped — naively, of course — that this entire affair would disappear as quickly as Hobbs did,” according to NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi, who asks: “Why was Rutgers so vehement in its insistence that Hobbs had stepped away for health reasons when an investigation was underway? Was the university so desperate to protect itself from potential litigation that it misled the community about the circumstances that led Hobbs, one of its highest-paid employees, to leave his job?” Politi goes on to cite former President Robert Barchi, who witnessed firsthand how a scandal involving the basketball coach could overshadow everything else at the university and said: “It was a revelation that the intensity of the response, both within the community, within the state and nationally on this very important and very serious issue could totally swamp out all of the other issues we’re trying to deal with and color everything else we’re doing.” Politi adds: That hasn’t happened here…yet. Holloway…needs to assure the Rutgers community that the results of both investigations will be revealed when they are completed. He also needs to launch a nationwide search to find Hobbs’ replacement, a hire that is far too important to get wrong.” (link)

Freshly minted Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell on how he’ll approach scheduling: "I want to get good home games, especially in football, that's really important. Obviously, we're going through a transition but we need to put ourselves in a position about three, four years down the road as a Group of 5 program where someone's going to the playoff. Obviously, Liberty proved last year that it can be done in Conference USA and that's the goal. That's our benchmark." Regarding any future matchups with Missouri, Ransdell remarked: “I don't know. I might have to get on the phone with Laird (Veatch)." When asked about the possibility this summer, Veatch explained: “It's not a yes or no kind of scenario. It depends on what's happening that year, what else is scheduled and a lot of things have to continue to sort of take place as we go through that. But we're obviously open-minded, particularly with an in-state school, that's an important approach." (link)

Illinois State Interim AD Jeri Beggs says ISU will get creative when finding ways to offset financial impact of the House settlement: “We’re going to figure out how to deal with this reduction in NCAA money and we’re going to do that by selling tickets and selling sponsorships and selling our donors on the idea of supporting us in new and unique ways.” Beggs also says revenue for student endorsement deals more than doubled in the second year as more students learned how to navigate NIL, and she projects 250% growth this year. “Ten of our 17 programs are represented in NIL deals and we are hoping to have 17 out of 17 before the academic year is complete.” Beggs confirms she will apply for the permanent post once a search committee is formed, though she acknowledges she was worried she had the right skill set upon taking over in the position in April 2023. “I was basically brought in to calm the waters after some of the upheaval of that spring. This is what I found out. I didn’t know everything there was to know about 19 sports, but what I do know is campus. What I do know is community. Probably the thing I’m most proud of is I think my staff feels most cared for and supported in many, many years. That enables them to go out and do their best work.” (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini delivered several letters to media members thanking them for their coverage of ASU. Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman shares the letter he received in which Rossini writes, in part: “I understand your role and appreciate you wanting to cover us in a very busy sports market, and whatever we need to do to assist in your efforts, I am here to listen and help.” Karpman: “I haven’t missed a home football game in 20 years covering ASU but no prior AD took the time to do something like this. It shows his effort.” (link)

Austin Peay Deputy AD/COO/SWA Niesha Campbell sits down with Collegiate Sports Associates/Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz in the latest Career Hustle to reflect on her career trajectory, including the lessons she learned from her early experiences as an auditor on Wall Street. Campbell also explains how she learned to play to her strengths when serving in new roles and discusses the value of emotional intelligence, intentionality, setting daily goals, relationship-building and more. Campbell on structuring her day and setting goals: “I look at the day, what do I have, map out my meetings, map out what I want to accomplish in between meetings. You'll find that the more responsibility, the more meetings you have. Mondays, for example, are all meetings and I know that I can't really get anything done outside of that, so I plan the day and plan the week strategically about what I have to accomplish and when.” Campbell also says she makes it a point to take breaks in the day to talk to other people. “I’m naturally an introvert. I’ve learned to be extroverted. But it's easy for me just to focus on the work and do that but learning how to put people as a part of that focus especially when you manage people is really important.” More on Connect. (link)

Want to work with Campbell at Austin Peay? Governors Deputy AD/COO/SWA Niesha Campbell and Deputy AD/CRO Jordan Harmon join Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to share insight into the open Senior Assoc. AD/CFO position in Clarksville. Campbell and Harmon discuss the department's culture, the personality traits needed to thrive as part of AD Gerald Harrison's senior leadership team, top priorities for the department and current projects this administrator will lead and more. Campbell on how this position can advance the Govs’ strategic vision: “It is figuring out ways to get it done. As I talked about earlier, [Govs AD] Gerald [Harrison] is ambitious and so he will have a good idea. We might come up with good ideas. And so it's going to be someone who helps us navigate how to accomplish that, how to get it done, how to make it sustainable, make it smart. We really will lean on this person to help us navigate every decision.” More on Connect. (link); You can view the full job description on CollegeSports.jobs. (link)

Early reviews of helmet communication technology are mixed, according to the AP’s Tim Reynolds. Georgia QB Carson Beck says: “I liked it a lot personally. There’s still some times where you look over to the sidelines and we’re not going — we’re going slow, we’re not going fast, and you still look at the signal, confirm everything. But I definitely think it picks up the pace of the game and allows us to play faster on offense, play to play.” Meanwhile, FIU HC Mike MacIntyre explains it “helped us some, but it kept messing up. It kept going in and out all of the time on us. We have been working on it for a while. I don’t know why it keeps going in and out.” Wisconsin HC Luke Fickell notes that “Game 1 to Game 2, you’ve got to find some of your biggest jumps. That’s not just in the play. It’s in communication. It’s in some of these technology things that we have afforded to us. But there’s a lot of things that will give us an opportunity to get a lot better.” (link)

More than 11M DirecTV subscribers lost access to Disney-owned channels on Sunday afternoon, including ESPN and ABC, after the two sides were unable to come to terms on a new distribution deal. According to DirecTV Chief Content Officer Rob Thun, “The Walt Disney Co. is once again refusing any accountability to consumers, distribution partners, and now the American judicial system. Disney is in the business of creating alternate realities, but this is the real world where we believe you earn your way and must answer for your own actions. They want to continue to chase maximum profits and dominant control at the expense of consumers – making it harder for them to select the shows and sports they want at a reasonable price. Consumer frustration is at an all-time high as Disney shifts its best producers, most innovative shows, top teams, conferences, and entire leagues to their direct-to-consumer services while making customers pay more than once for the same programming on multiple Disney platforms. Disney’s only magic is forcing prices to go up while simultaneously making its content disappear.” (link, link)

Kosner Media President John Kosner expects college football ratings to be “slightly down” over last season heading into the College Football Playoff, telling On3’s Eric Prisbell that Pac-12 audiences could feel somewhat diminished, the buzz surrounding Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders team isn’t quite the same and it will be hard to rival Michigan’s dramatic march to the national championship. Additionally, more games on streaming is “great for fan choice but likely will impact ratings for games in the same windows.” Meanwhile, Prisbell cites an increased slate of Friday night games and a 12-team CFP that could “dilute some interest in the regular season, at least early on. Kosner: “On the plus side, the EA College Football game is back and that will certainly aid interest among younger fans.” (link)
