#10: More from Hiram AD Scott Pohlman’s AD in Residence on his advice for those wanting to become an AD and how Hiram evaluates sport sponsorship and roster sizes. The process for adding a sport begins with the demographics of said sport. If the sport checks that box, the next evaluation looks at the ability to successfully recruit, coaching salaries, a three-year budget and the economic viability over that time and facility and personnel strain. If a proposed sport passes those criteria, it is reviewed by a committee “made up of a cross-section of campus.” Further: “It should be noted that at the end of each year, we sit down with each coach and establish recruiting goals for the upcoming year. If a team consistently falls below recruiting goals and ends up costing the college more to support them financially than they bring in, we will evaluate the program.” On his advice for future leaders: “It’s your department. Your employer is paying you to do a job. Before accepting the position, know and understand the expectations. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks. […] Most importantly, be honest with your employees. In my opinion, supervisors are sometimes too worried about hurting employees' feelings. It has been my experience that employees, more times than not, desire true and honest feedback.” Check out all of Pohlman’s responses on BOSCA. (link)

The University Athletics Council believes that a well-qualified contractor like Mammoth experienced in conference leadership is best positioned to sustain and grow the CUNY Athletic Conference.” One DIII coach telling THE CITY that “they are not convinced the contract will result in any positive changes for their athletics programs, saying that CUNY hasn’t invested in maintaining athletic fields or practice facilities.” (link)
