Texas A&M AD Bjork went before state lawmakers to express support for a bill that gives university employees the ability to “identify or otherwise assist” student-athletes in making NIL deals as long as the employee does not serve as an agent or receive compensation. Bjork: “At the highest level, the expectation that our student-athletes have is that we are more involved. … Until we have that national standard, maybe that will come from the federal government, maybe that will come from our governing body, the NCAA. But until then, we believe that the Texas state law should keep us as competitive as possible in these changes.” Bjork and Baylor General Counsel Holmes also voiced concerns about the NCAA’s new charging standard and asked for a presumption of innocence to be codified into law. Bjork: “So, if there’s language that needs to be cleaned up in this bill, we’re happy to participate in that. But we believe that the overburdened approach that the NCAA has taken regarding presumed responsibility should be part of this bill. It should protect the universities in Texas who are trying to do it the right way and who have every program in place possible, but still can be held responsible for something that they had nothing to do with.” (link)

Yahoo’s Wetzel agrees that now is the time for the Pac-12 to invite San Diego State aboard, and Aztecs MBB HC Dutcher believes that before now, the conference “would not ask us in with UCLA and USC because that would put us on equal footing and we would be too great a competitor to let in.” Dutcher also notes that “we have the greatest environment in the world because San Diego is the ninth-largest city in the country, and we have one pro team in town. So the pro basketball team of San Diego is the San Diego State Aztecs, so we get corporate seats sold. The city supports us. We are the basketball team of the city, and we are the football team of the city.” (link)

I love our players, I love our staff and the only thing I've been focused on since the beginning was doing the best job for our team. I was doing my job and I never had any intent of leaving." Norlander: “May is 46 and finishing up his fifth season with the Owls. He was contacted by multiple search firms reaching out on behalf of many power-conference schools in February and March, all of which gauged his interest in vacancies or soon-to-be-open job opportunities across the country. He passed on interviewing with all of them.” The deal is expected to be worth over $1M per year and include a significant increase in the AC salary pool. (link)

In the first of a two-part series for AthleticDirectorU, Georgia professor Suggs details several “myths” and “stories” associated with the current model of college athletics, beginning with the Transformation Committee’s redefinition of the following values: elevating support for student-athletes’ wellbeing; enhancing the championship experience; and building a faster and more equitable DI. “These values are the story the NCAA tells itself, its members and its athletes. … When an organization seeks to manage itself based on a story instead of its reality, inefficiencies arise. In this case, while espousing the value of amateur athletes, stakeholders in college sports have built the institution into an engine of revenue in Division I football and men’s basketball and a source of institutional branding and marketing at all institutions.” This, in turn, creates two problems; namely, the story that college sports is organized for amateurs playing for the love of their sport creates a number of perverse incentives while also placing college sports in a “tenuous legal position.” Lots more. Arizona President Robbins tells CBS’ Dodd that he’s “heard nothing to suggest [a Pac-12 media rights deal is] imminent. There's all these things about, well, 'We want to wait until [after] the Final Four.' That has nothing to do with it. It has to do with assessing who is the right fit, who assesses us. I hope [commissioner George Kliavkoff] gets something done sooner rather than later so that the whole thing stops, so we don't have focus on it. [But] I am perfectly willing to sit here and wait." Robbins also indicated the majority of Pac-12 games will be accessible on linear TV, saying the “whole streaming thing? That's overplayed. I think this deal is going to have a heavy traditional analog cable [piece]. I think. There may be some streaming in it, but I don't think anybody would want to go majority streaming. … I don't feel the angst of everyone else in the world. Maybe it's because I'm too dumb to realize. We've got a deal for another 15 months. We're the only ones out there. It's not like were competing with anybody else." Further, Robbins explains that his remarks earlier this month were not intended to suggest the Wildcats have options if the Pac-12’s deal misses the mark. “There is no deal or no agreement where, if everything blows up, we've got someplace to go." Women’s Basketball HCs were happy with the new March Madness Super Regional setup, Front Office Sports’ Christovich reports. Virginia Tech HC Brooks, for instance, called it a “first-class tournament experience,” adding: “The energy was just tremendous. It’s something that I’ll never forget. I know our kids will never forget it.” South Carolina HC Staley added that players even enjoyed the arrangement off the court, as it was the first time they could watch regional games on off days. “It was just a real community of women’s basketball: enthusiasts and lovers of our game.” Iowa HC Bluder says she’d love to see a Super Regional in the MIdwest in the future. “I know we would have had 10,000 Iowa Hawkeye fans there, although it felt like we had 10,000 anyway.” (link)

ESPN’s Purdum examines the rise in abuse MBB student-athletes have received this season from gamblers. Earlier this month, a group of roughly 125 sports officials, state gambling regulators and sportsbook executives met to discuss ways to fight this type of harassment. Mountain West Commissioner Nevarez says the conference call went into “high alert” upon learning about a WCC backup MBB player whose life was threatened after missing late-game free throws that would’ve covered the spread. Eventually, the FBI was contacted and confronted the perpetrator, which Nevarez says “brought us a tremendous amount of relief,” but Epic Risk Management Head of Delivery Potter tells Purdum the overarching problem is unlikely to go away. “One college had over 200 [instances]. … The reality is it’s going to get worse.” More from Purdum. The Arkansas House Insurance and Commerce Committee voted to move forward with a bill that would allow high school athletes who have been admitted to or signed a letter of intent to attend an Arkansas college “to enter into a contract and receive compensation for the commercial use of the student-athlete’s publicity rights” immediately. Arkansas AD Yurachek yesterday spoke in favor of the legislation, saying: “This is a very important bill for us. It keeps us in the forefront. It keeps us competitive not only in the Southeastern Conference but nationally.” The bill does not address in-state students who commit to out-of-state programs. (link)

The Athletic’s Navarro chats with LifeWallet CEO/prominent Miami (FL) supporter Ruiz, who says he’s invested between $12M and $14M in NIL deals with approximately 165 Hurricane student-athletes. Ruiz also insists he doesn’t overstep his bounds with the program, telling Navarro that “I don’t do anything like that so the school and the kids don’t think that I believe I’m entitled to anything that somebody else isn’t entitled to. So, I keep a good arm’s-length distance from the players and the school and what they have to do. I respect that.” Full Q&A. (link)

+ The FAU-focused Paradise Collective is now up and running, Sports Illustrated’s Dellenger reports, noting that during the Owls’ Final Four run, the collective has gone from inception to having raised $65K with the goal of raising $100K by the weekend. Dellenger observes that in Year 2 of the NIL era, it’s a window into the value of a Cinderella in March, and Co-Founder Kosco says that while no decision has been made regarding how the money will be distributed, he understands that time is a factor. “We want [the MBB players] to stay. There’s been a lot of talk and conversations and offers already from other teams.” (link)

Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy submits that contractual scholarships are the only way to tame the increasingly unwieldy transfer portal. “For example, young men should be able to sign a one-, two-, three- or four-year scholarship. That's their choice. Whatever they sign, that's what they're committed to. … That's the only way that we are going to have a chance to manage rosters. So, let's just say that at the end of this year I've got 19 guys whose contracts are up. They may be a senior or a freshman. So, if you're a five-star guy, like you're a heavily recruited guy, you might just sign a one-year deal and then say, ‘Well, I'm good enough to sign another one-year deal, or I can leave if I want.’ … So, you want a four-year deal? Sign a four-year deal, but you're bound to that four-year contract unless your head coach says he'll sign off and let you go. And then that puts more pressure on the head coach.” (link)

Outsports’ Zeigler notes that the number of out WBB HCs has “exploded” in recent years, reporting that “in this year’s Elite Eight, almost half the teams had an out coach” and adding: “Negative recruiting, for example, has been a powerful weapon used against some women in college sports. Coaches who engage in negative recruiting tell recruits that a rival coach is a lesbian, using that to dissuade players from going to a rival school.” Former Mills (DIII) AD/National Center for Lesbian Rights Sports Project Director Carroll says that while a number of social changes have led to this moment, one particularly stands out. “Marriage became legal and very visible around the United States. And as these younger coaches were growing up they’ve been able to see that it’s OK. And today if you’re married with kids, you are essentially out.” The trend, she adds, is “only going to be more and more available to coaches, being able to coach without worry hanging over their head, that they maybe outed.” More. The U.S. Army is working to quickly produce new ads to air during Final Four games this weekend after actor Majors, who was featured in the current campaign, was arrested on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment. The ads were also set to appear across multiple media platforms ranging from social media to billboards and cost a total of $117M. Major General/Chief of Army Enterprise Marketing Fink: “We are absolutely able to utilize a majority of what we have invested. Golden State Warriors star Curry inks a multiyear extension with Under Armour that will go beyond his playing career. ESPN’s DePaula reports the “growth potential of the stock awarded and expected annual compensation could see Curry earn more from the Under Armour extension than from his NBA contracts, which will total more than $473M through the 2025-26 season.” (link)

In fall 2022, the undergraduate enrollment decline slowed to 0.6%, according to preliminary data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research, which also shows that four-year public universities’ undergraduate enrollment fell by 0.9%. Meanwhile, undergraduate certificate programs experienced an enrollment increase of 5.5% YoY. Arkansas higher ed professor Miller believes private liberal arts colleges, as well as community colleges, are emphasizing the recruitment of male students in particular, in part by offering more sports participation options. The data seems to back that up, as the number of male undergraduates increased by 1.3% at four-year private, nonprofit institutions, while female undergraduate enrollment increased by 0.1%. (link)
