“Remember, I came out of a public-sector environment where there’s a lot of distributed decision-making models. I generally believe that if you respect the model, you can easily find a way to get to someplace that works for people. But I’ve also said that (football) is in some respects the biggest challenge that will face anybody in this job and I certainly believe it’s one of mine.” That’s new NCAA President Baker to the media yesterday as the Raleigh News & Observer’s DeCock frames up how, “So many of the existential and epistemological issues” Baker faces start on the gridiron. DeCock in closing: “This is tremendous spectacle, in Houston or Dallas, and tremendous basketball, and it’s what the NCAA actually does well. Figuring out the rest of it isn’t so easy.” (link)

Nevada AD Rempe gets the profile treatment from the Nevada Sports Net’s Murray. On how her life and career path has revolved around sports, Rempe: “Any limits for me were ones I created by choices I made. I don't feel like there were things put in front of me that I couldn't get over. But that also comes from being in sports. I really think it all comes back to sports. I was a walk-on. I was always the hardest worker or I go back to different accolades I got, and it's pretty funny, but it all comes back to kind of having that blue-collar mentality, which I also think that's the University of Nevada. I've always had the mindset that you have to outwork other people to get what you want.” Lots more. (link)

“Alan Haller wasn’t wearing a fake mustache or Groucho Marx glasses when he showed up Monday night to watch Bowling Green’s women’s basketball team host Florida in the WNIT quarterfinals. But Michigan State’s athletic director was in relative disguise, wearing all black, sitting near the top row of the Stroh Center, an everyman taking in a game, chatting up unsuspecting fans about the Falcons and their head coach, Robyn Fralick.” That is the Lansing State Journal’s Couch with an inside look on how Spartans AD Haller landed new WBB HC Fralick. The Michigan-native signed a six-year deal, worth $900K annually, about which Haller explains: “Not that she was looking for money. But that's where women's basketball salaries are going for the top programs. And I wasn't going to pinch pennies to get someone that I thought could help lead us here for years to come. So people might be surprised, but I was very comfortable with the commitment that we made financially.” More. (link)

Miami (FL) MBB Larranaga commented on what he sees as a nonsensical recruiting calendar, which currently makes it harder for programs that advance in March to also be attentive & effective in building next year’s roster: “Yeah, how about that? The more you win, the less you are able to recruit. That doesn’t really make sense, but it’s true.” San Diego State’s Dutcher offers: “While we’re sitting here getting ready for the greatest event in the world, there are coaches doing home visits and recruiting for next year’s team. So as focused as I am now, I’ve also got one eye on the future. If you don’t do that, you shouldn’t be coaching.” (link)

Indiana State MBB HC Schertz joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss translating success from the DII to DI level. Schertz, who previously led the Lincoln Memorial (DII) program to consistent national success, advises DI ADs: “Every situation is unique, anytime you recruit someone or hire someone there is a risk involved, but I think the risk is much less when you look at somebody’s track record and success at the small college level - is how they are running their program translatable to what it is going to look like at the Division I level?” Schertz advises fellow coaches looking to make the jump: “If I made any mistakes it was operating under the assumption that people understood that coaching is coaching. There’s great coaches at all levels of basketball. The thought that there’s a monopoly on great coaches in Division I is really to me kind of remarkable.” Full convo on Connect. (link)

The New York Times’ Tumin and Rhim wonder what is next for the high-profile stars in college women’s basketball. With only 144 spots on WNBA rosters, and only 36 players drafted each year, the pair suggests that the deepened talent pool of collegiate players will create an issue. For reference, only 17 players drafted last year made it to a team’s opening day roster in the WNBA. UCLA WBB HC Close offers: “We have all these people growing and mastering their craft, with no place to go in the United States. It’s just really sad that those are the conversations we’re having to have with our league and our college game being so healthy and vibrant and growing.” (link)

Hail! Impact Founder Weerappuli shares the collective’s origin story, which began with a shot-in-the-dark email to a random address Weerappuli hoped belonged to Michigan FB HC Harbaugh. Weerappuli had intended to invite Harbaugh to his graduation ceremony from the Ross School of Business but was surprised to receive a reply from Harbaugh’s father, who offered to attend in his son’s place. That meeting led to a meeting with the Wolverines HC, which led to Weerappuli volunteering to use his connections in the Ross School to expand NIL opportunities for Wolverines FB student-athletes. The collective hopes to raise $5M to fund annual stipends for the Michigan FB team, with intentions of expanding to other sports if funding targets are met. Moreover, The Athletic’s Meek notes that Weerappuli describes the optimal NIL approach as the “golden triangle,” which includes a for-profit marketing agency, an LLC collective and a nonprofit foundation. U-M has the first two through Valiant and Champions Circle. Weerappuli sees Hail! Impact as the third part of the triangle, catering to donors who don’t have a commercial interest in NIL but value the community impact and the tax write-off they get from donating to a charitable foundation. After one of the most memorable - and surely one of the most-watched - Women’s Basketball tilts in history that saw Iowa star Clark become the first student-athlete to score 40 or more points in back-to-back games of the NCAA Tournament, South Carolina HC Staley took exception to how some members of the media refer to her team: “We're not bar fighters. We're not thugs. We're not monkeys. We're not street fighters. I do think that that's sometimes brought into the game, and it hurts. [...] Some of the people in the media, when you're gathering in public, you're saying things about our team, and you're being heard, and it's being brought back to me. And these are the people that write nationally for our sport. So you can not like our team and you can not like me. But when you say things that you probably should be saying in your home on the phone or texting out in public and you're being heard, and you are a national writer for our sport – it just confirms what we already know. So watch what you say when you're in public and you're talking about my team in particular.” Staley was also asked about what additional improvements she’d like to see for WBB: “The units are pretty big. Like that's pretty big because that's the thing that's been weighing us down, meaning it costs a lot to bring all of these teams all around the country in the tournament, and if we can bring millions into our athletics departments, I think it would help on our campuses. So it's a long-term effect where, if you're a football player, your experience is probably a lot different than a women's basketball player. We can all agree to that because they're bringing in the money, right? Then if we're bringing in the money, our experience will be a little bit different, and there are things that coaches won't have to fight for. They just happen because you're bringing in some money. You're not seeing the red always. So that's what that would mean.” (link, link)

Michigan State MBB HC Izzo on allowing student-athletes to transfer and qualify for immediate eligibility: “I don't have a lot of faith in the NCAA. This waiver thing. If you've got a hangnail, you get a waiver. I just don't believe in that, because I think somebody, whether it's a lawyer, whether it's agents, whether it's people, they're going to just come up with a different reason. Mental health is a big reason. I just don't see why sitting out is such a bad thing because 90 percent of the kids that are sitting out aren't pros anyway or they'd go pro. … I'm not for it. I'm not for anything. I just think we're hurting decisions that kids make. I mean we've got 1,200. By Tuesday, we'll have 1,500, and then we're going to get a second wave of kids in the portal. And kids are going to go places that maybe it's a little bit for the money, maybe it's because they're worried about beating somebody else out. We all had to beat people out ... and I think we're losing that. Where's the competitive edge?” (link)

SBJ’s King writes on the discontinued sponsorship between Colorado & PointsBet: “It turns out that the fear of blowback that kept many schools and several sportsbooks off of college campuses was justified. [...] It worked out OK for the sportsbooks, who see the vast majority of the value of these deals in their first year, when they’re signing up new customers in a state. But it hasn’t played out well for the schools. And now it appears that what once was thought to be a highly lucrative ship has sailed.” (link)

I need to be able to continue to coach as hard and as well as I can coach and when I decide that enough's enough. If this year’s Men’s Basketball Final Four has a different cinematic feel, that’s because a different director is in charge, per The Athletic’s Deitsch. CBS director Grant is now leading the production, and some of his previous work has included the 2006 Gonzaga-UCLA matchup in the Sweet 16 as well as Michigan’s 2018 victory over Houston, which came down to a buzzer beater. Grant: “It’s easy to show Michigan and the celebration but the money shots were the players for Houston who were on the floor crying after the game. One of our camera guys had a shot where in the foreground he had a Houston player crying and in the background you see the Michigan players celebrating. So in one shot, you saw what the NCAA Tournament was all about. I’ll never forget that shot. That’s what I try to do.” Compared to longtime director and Grant’s predecessor, Fishman, Grant says he is “probably a little bit more aggressive in capturing the emotion, getting tight shots of the players’ faces. … I don’t want the quality of play on the court to determine the quality of the production, and that’s my job to try to make that happen.” (link)

ASM Global EVP of Stadiums, Arenas and Theaters Thornton, whose firm is managing this weekend’s Men’s Basketball Final Four at NRG Stadium in Houston, shares some insights with Sportico’s Feldman about the process. For a major event such as this, ASM handles staffing for any temporary construction needed ahead of time, as well as hiring up to 4K workers for game day who assist in everything from security to trash pickup. Thornton: “You have all the same elements that you would have if you were running a small city. Our job is to make sure that we’re prepared for that.” The events themselves aren’t significant to ASM’s bottom line as a venue management company, but Thornton explains that “what it does do is give us a significant presence with…the sports leagues, the NGBs, that is immeasurable.” (link)
