Central Michigan AD Amy Folan has inked a contract extension that could keep her in Mount Pleasant through September of 2029. There’s base pay of $302K as part of the deal, along with a $20K signing bonus & annual $40K retention bonuses. If Folan makes the decision to exit, she’d owe the university $50K. If the university makes a move without cause it would owe Folan remaining base pay over the remainder of the contract. (link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead discussed the latest in the House case with The Athletic’s Seth Emerson: “Well, it needs to be resolved, because we entered into a settlement and we expect that entire settlement to be accepted by the judge. She’s expressed some concerns, and hopefully those concerns will be addressed over the next three weeks. [...] I don’t think it’s back to the drawing board. The settlement’s the settlement. She’s got to decide whether she’s going to accept the settlement that’s been agreed to by the parties.” Headlining attorney Tom Mars comments: “UGA’s President doesn’t seem to understand that a class action adjudicates the rights of absent third parties, and settlements must be approved to make sure those third parties - college athletes, in this case - aren’t getting screwed. Don’t screw the athletes. Case closed.” (link, link)

Athletes.org’s Jim Cavale latest thoughts on the House case: “Once you look at things within the terms that the schools will now have to make decisions on at the school level, there's a really great need for the athletes to be included in how the school approaches the House settlement — and all the athletes should be included from all the sports. Whether they all get revenue sharing or not, or whether some keep current benefits and some get new benefits, those are all things they should be a part of [in] the decision. The fact that they have never been included in that is exactly why we're here.” (link)

The DI Council last month officially recommended the transition of the NLI program into NCAA legislation and institutional athletic aid agreements. The recommendation specifies that an “athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not communicate or make contact with a prospective student-athlete who has signed a written offer of athletics aid with another NCAA Division I or Division II institution, or any individual associated with the student-athlete; in-person on- or off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete on the day the prospective student-athlete signs a financial aid agreement or other commitment to attend the institution or attendance at activities related to the signing of a commitment to attend the institution shall be prohibited; and that a prospective student-athlete who signs an institutional financial aid agreement in a sport other than football prior to the initial signing date is ineligible for competition in football during the individual’s first year of enrollment at the institution and shall be charged one season of competition in football.” The council also addressed processing requirements for sports gambling violations. “Current legislation holds an institution responsible for violations committed by staff members at the same level regardless of the circumstances. Recently, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors Infractions Process Committee and the Division I Committee on Infractions recommended strategies be considered to help focus the resources of the infractions process on the types of sports wagering cases that impact the integrity of intercollegiate athletics. This proposal would address that desire for efficiency and accountability by allowing an institution’s portion of a sports wagering case to be processed at a lower level than an individual’s portion, provided certain factors are met.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts catches up with The Eagle’s Robert Cessna: “I don’t think resources are inhibiting any of our program’s opportunity to be competitively successful. And more importantly, from my perspective, I don’t think that resources are inhibiting the administration’s ability to support student-athletes — objective in every area of growth, meaning competitive, academic, socially, spiritually, all the things that we do to support them. So I feel comfortable with that, but obviously, things are changing. We have pressure points, and so we’re going to have to adjust and adapt in those areas.” Alberts also addressed his staff reduction measures: “We didn’t make sweeping changes to bring in all of my people, that is a little bit different, right? So you have seen that, I just believe in a lean, disciplined, accountable organization. That’s what I believe. The people that are no longer working here didn’t do anything wrong. These are wonderful professionals, executives that it’s just, you know, in this new iteration, I believe that administratively, we’re going to have to be leaner, rather than, the alternative.” (link)

Following an anonymous letter alleging NCAA violations at Memphis earlier this week, Tigers AD Ed Scott states: “Absolutely, unequivocally, based on every piece of information I have right now today, Penny Hardaway is going to be on that sideline marching up and down and trying to get us a victory when Missouri comes in here.” More from Scott on Hardaway’s impact: “He's doing this not to get paid. He's doing it because he believes he can win and he cares about Memphis and he cares about the institution. And so if that's the common denominator, I love working with someone like that. Working with Penny in this city, anything he does or does not do is going to be national news. And I'm comfortable with that.” (link)

The Daily Memphian’s Geoff Calkins responds to Scott’s strong support of Hardaway: “Scott is comfortable in his own skin. Or he seemed to be sitting across from me Friday morning during a radio interview. The interview was not scheduled in response to recent developments at Memphis. Scott was supposed to be in studio a couple weeks ago, but we changed dates because I was traveling. So I wondered if Scott would cancel. Find a reason not to answer questions about 1) the sudden firing of four members of the basketball staff, including lead assistant Rick Stansbury, and 2) an anonymous letter alleging Hardaway and Memphis had violated numerous NCAA regulations. But there was Scott, right on schedule, ready to answer questions about all those things and more. [...] It’s impossible to listen to that interview and not feel better about the future of Memphis basketball. Not because Scott said that Hardaway will be here forever — he didn’t. But because he sounded like the enterprise will be OK either way.” (link)

“Basically if you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, then it's tough to lead, and that's what you're getting right now from the NCAA.” That’s Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy following the NCAA’s ruling that the Pokes could not put QR codes on their helmets. Gundy continues: “They pulled the uniform code violation on us. I’ll be really honest with you … I think that they do everything they can do now to show that they have a little bit of power. And this was an opportunity for them to say, ‘Okay, we have a little power. We’re gonna make a statement,’ when in theory, you and I both know they don’t have any power anymore. … What I did was, I said, okay, I’m gonna be a soldier. I’m gonna listen. I’m gonna do what I’m told. The reason why is this. They have told me that they would punish the player that went on the field with a QR code on their helmet. I tried to get them to punish me because then, we would roll with it and I would say, ‘Punish me. I don’t care.’ But I’m not gonna allow them to punish a player because those stickers were on their helmets. So, I pulled them off before the first game. But I’m very disappointed in the fact that we’re trying to migrate toward more revenue sharing for the gladiator sport that we’re in. As you know, these guys get beat up and they fight their ass off every day. So we’re trying to reward them, and the NCAA’s trying to go the other way. That’s why we’re in this situation in the first place.” (link)

Longtime Penn State Board of Trustees member and former chairman of the board Ira Lubert, alongside his wife Pam Estadt, have donated $10M in support of renovations to Beaver Stadium. This is the fourth eight-figure donation announced in the past month. Lubert is a former PSU wrestler and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member. The remodeled entrance to Beaver Stadium will be named the Lubert Family Welcome Center. The Nittany Lions have now publicly announced $55M in donations toward the $700M project. (link)

Georgia will increase football season ticket prices and per-seat contribution levels in 2025, and the contribution levels will jump again in 2027. Next season, tickets will rise to $80 per game, up from the current price of $75 for SEC games and $55 for nonconference games. For the 2025 season, Georgia's seven home games will cost $560. Nearly half of season ticket holders will be required to increase their per-seat contribution with new minimum requirements ranging from $250-$710. Club seating ranges from $400 to $7,500 for the new 1929 club (where a contribution of at least $1M is needed). In 2022, the Bulldogs hired to analyze the football fan base before making these changes. UGA says the median increase amount for those impacted is $270 with 25% increasing $130 or less. A quarter of season ticket accounts will increase by $130 or less with 16.9% seeing a decrease and 14.3% staying the same. Other news out of Athens, the new 6K square-foot video board and new premium areas at Stegeman Coliseum have been moved to phase two of the renovation process and won’t be ready for the 2025-26 season, though lighting and sound upgrades will be ready for next season. UCLA QB Chase Griffin talks with the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch about the newly launched, player-led 1919 Players Fund and whether it’s a collective. “People can call it what they want. I see it more as a content studio, I see us almost as a talent agency where we develop UCLA football players and we give them the means of creating content that creates returns on investment with the brands that we work with.” Early partners in the venture include the investment advisory firm SteelPeak Wealth, the Westwood Village Improvement Assn. and Movember, the organization centered around men’s health awareness. Griffin says he built those partnerships via the network of resources he’s cultivated while becoming a two-time NIL athlete of the year. Griffin also says he prefers to think of the Men of Westwood collective as a partner rather than a rival. “If they have content that needs to be executed, let us know. We’re hungry for opportunities, our players are showing that by coming here on a Thursday night that we had off and we have the ability to create any content and create return on investment for any brand.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Morehead State Baseball HC Brady Ward has resigned after one season with the Eagles to accept a position in the Miami Marlins organization. Current AC Chris Rose will serve as Interim HC this season. (link)
+ Bat Cats Central’s Derek Terry reports that Kentucky Baseball HC Nick Mingione has agreed to a “significant contract extension” that could keep him as head coach through the 2029 season. Mingione’s salary this season will now be $1.175M, up from the $805K he was previously slated to earn for the 2025 campaign. In 2026 he’ll earn $1.275M, in 2027 it goes to $1.375M and jumps by $200K in each of the final two years. He’ll also earn an automatic one-year extension whenever the Cats make the NCAA Tournament. If Mingione chooses to leave before the contract is up, he would owe the prorated salary of the remaining contract. That number would be cut in half if Mitch Barnhart is no longer the school’s athletic director. If UK terminates the contract entirely without cause, they would owe Mingione the full remaining amount. (link)

House Happenings…
+ NCAA President Charlie Baker today wrote in a letter to the membership: “Last night’s hearing did not go as we hoped. The court posed worthwhile questions that the NCAA began working through immediately last night with our partners in the conferences. … Our next step will be responding to the court’s questions. As we prepare to do that, we will discuss the issues with the appropriate NCAA governance groups, including student-athletes and campus and conference administrators. Regarding the Fontenot and Cornelio lawsuits, we are advocating to address these claims, which are the same as the ones at issue in the House, Carter and Hubbard cases. However, the Colorado cases are being litigated by different plaintiffs’ lawyers from those in California. Our belief is that either the federal judge in California or the federal judge in Colorado will recognize the duplicate claims and view the settlement to have addressed the student-athlete claims in all cases." Full letter. (link)
+ In response to an unnamed power conference president who told Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger last night that “there’s no reason to settle under these circumstances. Go to trial and take our chances on appeal,” Heither Legal Founder Darren Heitner comments: “Be careful what you wish for. The NCAA may lose this case on summary judgment.” Sportico’s Michael McCann adds: “This is the NCAA's conundrum. If NCAA rejects a free (or more free) market for NIL, then settlement falls apart and litigation resumes, and NCAA probably loses given Judge Wilken's views. But the NCAA worries NIL has become pay-for-play. If only the NCAA had listened to Ed O’Bannon.” (link)
+ The Collective Association “commends Judge Wilken’s commitment to fairness on behalf of current and future college athletes” and asserts that the “proposed limitations placed on third-party booster and collective deals was exposed as another attempt by the NCAA to take back rights from…college athletes.” The TCA adds: “Moving forward, we encourage stakeholders in Congress and the media to be leery of both the motives and the actions of the NCAA. After their business model was defeated by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2021, the NCAA seems to have made its primary mission to 1) place blame for their inability to continue their illegal business practices at the feet of every other party, athletes and collectives included, and 2) to claw back power, with a goal of limiting opportunities for athletes to realize their true value in the marketplace.” Full statement. (link)
+ Charlie Winfield, founder of the Mississippi State-focused Bulldog Initiative, tells CBS’ Brandon Marcello that leading up to yesterday’s hearing, “it feels like a lot of people in college athletics read the marketing literature on this settlement. They wanted to be rid of collectives, they wanted it to go away, and they just kind of kept hoping they could write it into a settlement, but it still faces the same legal hurdles that brought them to court in the first place, which are the antitrust and anti-competitive aspects. … This was a situation where they thought they could come up with the answers and push them past everybody, and I don't think they wanted input," Winfield said. "I think it's unfortunately part of what has led them to where we are now." Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter on what he thinks comes next: “If I had to bet, in three years, five years, whatever it is, some college athletes are going to be employees because that's really the only way you can solve all these antitrust problems and actually legally create these restrictions that they want to create, like we see in pro sports.” (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski last week weighed in on several topics with GoldandBlack.com’s Alan Karpick and said of conference expansion: “I think, just out of necessity, and with all the other elements that are in play right now, that it’ll be quiet for a period of time. From the Big Ten perspective, the only way it would ever make sense for us to be something other than 18 teams would be if someone can come in that adds clear and unquestioned value to the table. … and there are very few of those that exist in the landscape right now, period.” Bobinski also said – obviously before yesterday’s House settlement hearing – that objections to the settlement for various reasons “are, in my opinion, short-sighted and don’t really take in the entire picture. But that’s for the judge ultimately to decide if, in fact, those challenges are deemed to be not worthy.” In regards to football scheduling, Bobinski said the Boilermakers would like to “work it to where we maybe have a Group of 5 and FCS and then a Power Four team as sort of our lead-in to our year. It’ll take some time. We’re not going to bail out on a bunch of contracts, unless there’s a mutual interest to walk away from future games or series. And that, I think, is something that you never know. … Nobody thinks three layups is a great idea. When you’re getting ready to play in the Big Ten, you’ve got to be tested. You got to know what it looks like to play against real people. That being said, you want to come out of it in a reasonably confident and healthy way to the best of your ability. And so having some more balance, I think, is the plan going forward.” (link)

The ACC “provided its clearest defenses yet” in its legal battle with Florida State via a 162-page court filing in Leon County, Florida, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker, who explains: “Most of the technical arguments fall into two larger buckets: The first is time. The dispute largely centers on who owns the TV rights to FSU home games if/when the Seminoles leave the ACC. FSU wants them, but the ACC contends the school gave them to the league until as late as 2036.” The “second defense bucket focuses on a previous conference realignment lawsuit: the ACC’s suit against Maryland. That dispute started a dozen years ago as the Terrapins were moving to the Big Ten. The settlement ended with the ACC keeping $31M from the school.” The ACC points out that FSU was a conference member during that dispute and voted to enforce the exit fee, took their share of Maryland’s money and accepted the “benefit of the stability of the ACC” because of the league’s rules. FSU’s actions, then, per the ACC, “led the ACC to reasonably understand that (FSU) did not contest the validity or enforceability of the withdrawal payment obligation.” The ACC’s filing also requests a jury trial, arguing FSU should “have and recover nothing” through its claim and that the league should be awarded costs in the case plus “further relief” as the court sees fit. The First District Court of Appeal has a hearing scheduled for Wednesday over part of the ACC’s attempt to pause or stop FSU’s suit in Tallahassee. (link)

In South Carolina, the ACC is also requesting a jury trial on “all issues of fact presented by (Clemson's) amended Complaint and (the ACC's) answer." The league also wants Clemson to pay its legal costs and for the Pickens County court to "award such further relief as it deems just and appropriate." Along with a request for a jury trial, the ACC's filing in Pickens County Court responds to Clemson's amended complaint, paragraph by paragraph, admitting to or disputing the university's claims. The 38-page brief objects to many of Clemson's assertions, including the Tigers’ interpretation of the GOR, about which it contends: “Plaintiff was aware that it had an obligation to object to this understanding and interpretation of the Grant of Rights agreements if it disagreed, but Plaintiff nevertheless accepted the benefits created by the Grant of Rights agreements without objection. The media rights granted in the Grant of Rights and its amendment were transferred 'regardless' of whether the Plaintiff remained a Member of the Conference and for the Term of the agreements." ACC attorneys go on to quote several news reports in 2013 on the ACC-ESPN agreements, which repeat the same conclusion about the grant of rights. More from The Post & Observer’s Jon Blau. (link)

Utah State has unilaterally taken away 1K student football tickets that will now be for sale, according to the Utah Statesman’s Ashley Dorius, who writes: “Students may not be able to attend larger games, such as the upcoming historically well-attended game against University of Utah, without reserving seats. Even if students are given seats leftover after sales, they won’t be with the student section.” USU student/HURD President Dallin Wilson on the possibility of getting the tickets back in the hands of students: “I know that, at least in section 116, they started opening those tickets up to be sold, so there’s no way to get those back. We were hoping that we could retain all of Section 117 for student tickets, and we’ve been told that that’s not possible for the Utah game, and they’ve made no promises about games after that. … The biggest thing that’s frustrating to me and to the student leaders is that the athletic department felt like they could make this choice without approaching any student leaders. There was no one consulted in student affairs or the student involvement office about these changes. I was never officially told. I saw it with my own eyes on Saturday and had to ask in my standing meeting with athletics.” USU has yet to comment on the matter. (link)
