The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers his take on realignment scenarios, saying the likelihood of San Diego State being in the same conference as Oregon State and Washington State starting in the summer of 2026 would fall on the “very high side” of 50%. “It’s a near-certainty and could come in one of several forms: 1) Oregon State and Washington State join the Mountain West. 2) The Aztecs join a rebuilt Pac-12 with some or all of the Mountain West schools. 3) All three join the ACC to expand its western footprint. (This outcome has a 0.001 percent chance of materializing, and would require Florida State and Clemson to exit the ACC, along with North Carolina, in the next nine-to-12 months.) Not that you asked, but here’s one more layer to consider: I would include Boise State and make it a quartet.” He continues, noting that with the Mountain West’s agreement with Fox and CBS expiring in the summer of 2026, SDSU and Boise State “have no intention of signing up for more of the same when 2026 rolls around. Which means: 1) Either they stay in the Mountain West (with WSU and OSU as new members) and the top schools insist on unequal shares of media rights revenue. 2) Or they leave the conference and join a rebuilt Pac-12 with eight or 10 schools that have media valuations well above the current and future Mountain West averages. Put another way: A conference consisting of Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV, Air Force and at least one more school — but no more than three — would generate more media value than the Mountain West if the current collection of schools signed a new deal together.” More. Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Jeff Jackson joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss conference realignment, evaluating fit with adding members and preparing for changes to the industry. Jackson explains that after bringing in Belmont, UIC, and Murray State, he’s learned that “the institutions are important, but the people are actually more important, and I think one of the things that has made those three institutions so valuable to our conference is the leadership that exists on those campuses. Having the opportunity to get to know their presidents and chancellors, their athletic directors, their senior women administrators, their FARs, their student athletes, they fit what we think the Valley is, which is a conference that puts the ideology, the concept, the importance of the student-athlete experience first and foremost. And those three institutions have come in and done a fantastic job and in that stead, and they fit right in. They geographically match our footprint. We can't be more happy and can't be more fortunate to have had the opportunity to add those three institutions.” More on Connect. (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel talks with 506Tek Founder/CEO Lou Stadler, who, as an undergraduate student at FIU in 2004, began interviewing more than 500 ADs from DI through NAIA to gather their thoughts on student-athlete compensation and a college football playoff (pre-capitalization). Teel notes that about 90% of the FBS ADs Stadler canvassed in 2004 opposed such a measure, and roughly 55% preferred the BCS to the four-team College Football Playoff that debuted a decade later. Teel observes that “for those who elaborated, including Virginia Tech’s Jim Weaver, Georgia Tech’s Dave Braine, who preceded Weaver in Blacksburg, and Baylor’s Ian McCaw, now at Liberty, the common refrain in opposing athlete compensation was the six-figure value of a full, four-year scholarship.” Big 12 Deputy Commissioner/then-Kansas State AD Tim Weiser remarked at the time: “If players were deemed employees, we would have to deal with unions and workers' compensation issues. We would then have to pay all athletes. … Philosophically, that is not what we are here to do. We are here to educate.” Former Virginia AD Craig Littlepage, now a senior advisor with Collegiate Sports Associates, said at the time: “I am not opposed, but I would need to know where funding will be coming from and that it is gender neutral.” If Littlepage was prescient regarding player compensation, former Temple AD Bill Bradshaw was clairvoyant when it came to a football playoff. “This is America, where a national playoff exists in every other sport. … There is nothing more exciting than teams playing at a neutral site to advance. The networks would pay billions for the rights. Bowl games would then finally mean something.” (link)

“My goal was not to be an athletic director. But if you’re in an industry … (and) you do your job, you do the best you can in whatever job you’re in, somebody will tap you on the shoulder. And I do believe this, you have to get yourself out of your comfort zone.” That’s new UMass Lowell AD Lynn Coutts, reflecting on her career, which landed her as the first female AD for the River Hawks. “I just wanted to stay in the industry, I do love it. If you could be an administrator before you were a coach, that would be really helpful. Now I see the bigger picture, and I think I have more of an impact in administration than I did in coaching. Coaching was just my team. Now I can have an impact on more people, and I love people. I like to learn about different sports, I like to learn about different people and look at things from different perspectives. … I knew I wanted to try this. I’ve always said yes, and then sometimes I say ‘Oh my gosh, what am I doing?’ … I like to go through a little adversity, and I like to make a difference and have an impact.” More, as Coutts gets the profile treatment from the Portland Press Herald’s Drew Bonifant. Memphis Men’s Basketball HC Penny Hardaway did a Q&A with College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein. When asked why he opted to make sweeping staff changes last week, Hardaway: “I don’t really want to get into that.” Rothstein pushed further, asking if the Tigers’ HC was surprised at the amount of turnover he has had on his staff during his tenure. Hardaway: “At the end of the day, this is who I am. I’m not traditional so stop trying to put me with the guys that are. I’m not a traditional dude — that’s first and foremost. People have come to me for various reasons. I’ve accepted them for various reasons. The turnover had a lot of graduate assistants, had a lot of managers. The coaches who have left have went on to get bigger and better jobs and better positions. No one has really just been fired. There’s been multiple things that have happened mutually and I still talk to everyone who was in the program because it’s a tree. For everyone else, it’s a coaching tree and for me, it’s turnover. … I don’t understand why this is unheard of for you guys who have been in the business for a long time. This is only my sixth year. I’m trying to figure it out. I started out having an NBA staff and now I’m trying to work everything else out.” Would he do anything differently? “I don’t think so because to me it’s the bumps and bruises. My bumps and bruises in this business can get louder than anyone else’s bumps and bruises. … But to say I’m not accomplished in everything that I’ve done — that’s just a lie. It’s who I am — I’m being judged harsher than an average coach that just came in. It is what it is. I’m not above criticism, but I know that I’m being judged harsher.” Are you confident you still have momentum as a program? “Why wouldn’t I? What have I done to not have momentum?” (link)

Former Ole Miss football student-athlete DeSanto Rollins’ appeal to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, following U.S. District Court Judge Michael P. Mills’ dismissal of Rollins’ civil case against Rebels HC Lane Kiffin in February, has been denied. The three-judge panel found “no error in the district court’s determination that Rollins has failed to carry his burden.” (link)

NIL was the differentiator in Oregon’s football victory over Idaho last weekend, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, who notes that while Georgia HC Kirby Smart is envious of the Ducks’ NIL apparatus, the Vandals lost seven of their top players to FBS programs via the transfer portal, five of whom received NIL deals in the six figures. Idaho HC Jason Eck: “If we had those (five) guys that got paid, I think we’d probably have beaten Oregon. We got sacked four times. Our quarterback, who is now at Oregon State, can really evade pressure and extend plays.” Eck says the job has definitely gotten harder since he took over in 2021 when NIL had just become legal. “You wouldn’t have thought guys would be getting recruited off your roster like it happens. It’s just a balancing act of trying to do right by the kids because for some, it’s life-changing money. The one thing that we’re gonna try to do with some of ours this year is, especially guys who are younger players — and we started a lot of younger players in this game — is have that ‘one more year’ thought. Our guys went to Oregon State, Cal, UCF and Cincinnati, they weren’t going to premier destinations. ‘Wait another year. Don’t go to a bottom-half Power 4 school.'” To help with that, Eck notes the Vandals-focused collective hopes to raise $100K by the time the portal opens in December. Meanwhile, Vandals AC Stanley Franks Jr. says the program uses the portal as a recruiting tool. “We have to recruit Mountain West-caliber guys: ‘Come here, get developed and play, and then bless your family your last couple of years of college.’ You want to educate these guys as much as possible. I tell them, we develop cats here. Why go somewhere else where I might sit on the bench just because of a logo? We flip it as a positive.” (link)

The News & Observer’s Chip Alexander talks with Centennial Authority Chairman Philip Isley and Executive Director Jeff Merritt about plans for the $300M PNC Arena renovation, noting the two went over options with the Raleigh City Council and Wake County Commission this week. Isley: “We think it’s important for them to know that we’re not sitting around idling, trying to figure out how to spend all this money. We have been very intentional in how we’re going to spend the money, what we’re trying to draw and design, and then put it out to market and see what we can build.” Merritt says the initial renovation work is expected to begin immediately after the 2024-25 Carolina Hurricanes season and adds: “We want to make this a world-class venue for the next 25 years. We want it to be unique to the region. We don’t just want a cookie-cutter. We want to grow our revenue opportunities, which is always important, but we want to be a catalyst for the community.” Isley this week told Wake County commissioners that “with tailgating, there are lots of really good ideas from the developer. By contract, there has to be a set amount of acreage that is dedicated to tailgating. There are conversations we’re going through right now, literally every week, trying to figure out what that might look like and everybody is happy about.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Do the titles given during a career define the underlying skill?
Chris McFarlane is the Deputy Athletics Director for External Relations and Business Development at UCF. At a quick glance, his career arc would have him labeled as a fundraiser. With further study, McFarlane's career is actually rooted in building programs.
• Hired to lead an athletics fundraising office in his mid-20s
• Purposely stepped away from a leadership role after successfully building a couple of fundraising programs
• Recent appointment leans into his building programs skill while using aspects of his fundraising experience
McFarlane continues to rely on the skills developed while working as a fundraiser but has always known that his superpower is building sustainable programs that help athletics departments focus on executing their purpose for existing. 🎧 on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

Central Michigan AD Amy Folan has inked a contract extension that could keep her in Mount Pleasant through September of 2029. There’s base pay of $302K as part of the deal, along with a $20K signing bonus & annual $40K retention bonuses. If Folan makes the decision to exit, she’d owe the university $50K. If the university makes a move without cause it would owe Folan remaining base pay over the remainder of the contract. (link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead discussed the latest in the House case with The Athletic’s Seth Emerson: “Well, it needs to be resolved, because we entered into a settlement and we expect that entire settlement to be accepted by the judge. She’s expressed some concerns, and hopefully those concerns will be addressed over the next three weeks. [...] I don’t think it’s back to the drawing board. The settlement’s the settlement. She’s got to decide whether she’s going to accept the settlement that’s been agreed to by the parties.” Headlining attorney Tom Mars comments: “UGA’s President doesn’t seem to understand that a class action adjudicates the rights of absent third parties, and settlements must be approved to make sure those third parties - college athletes, in this case - aren’t getting screwed. Don’t screw the athletes. Case closed.” (link, link)

Athletes.org’s Jim Cavale latest thoughts on the House case: “Once you look at things within the terms that the schools will now have to make decisions on at the school level, there's a really great need for the athletes to be included in how the school approaches the House settlement — and all the athletes should be included from all the sports. Whether they all get revenue sharing or not, or whether some keep current benefits and some get new benefits, those are all things they should be a part of [in] the decision. The fact that they have never been included in that is exactly why we're here.” (link)

The DI Council last month officially recommended the transition of the NLI program into NCAA legislation and institutional athletic aid agreements. The recommendation specifies that an “athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not communicate or make contact with a prospective student-athlete who has signed a written offer of athletics aid with another NCAA Division I or Division II institution, or any individual associated with the student-athlete; in-person on- or off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete on the day the prospective student-athlete signs a financial aid agreement or other commitment to attend the institution or attendance at activities related to the signing of a commitment to attend the institution shall be prohibited; and that a prospective student-athlete who signs an institutional financial aid agreement in a sport other than football prior to the initial signing date is ineligible for competition in football during the individual’s first year of enrollment at the institution and shall be charged one season of competition in football.” The council also addressed processing requirements for sports gambling violations. “Current legislation holds an institution responsible for violations committed by staff members at the same level regardless of the circumstances. Recently, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors Infractions Process Committee and the Division I Committee on Infractions recommended strategies be considered to help focus the resources of the infractions process on the types of sports wagering cases that impact the integrity of intercollegiate athletics. This proposal would address that desire for efficiency and accountability by allowing an institution’s portion of a sports wagering case to be processed at a lower level than an individual’s portion, provided certain factors are met.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts catches up with The Eagle’s Robert Cessna: “I don’t think resources are inhibiting any of our program’s opportunity to be competitively successful. And more importantly, from my perspective, I don’t think that resources are inhibiting the administration’s ability to support student-athletes — objective in every area of growth, meaning competitive, academic, socially, spiritually, all the things that we do to support them. So I feel comfortable with that, but obviously, things are changing. We have pressure points, and so we’re going to have to adjust and adapt in those areas.” Alberts also addressed his staff reduction measures: “We didn’t make sweeping changes to bring in all of my people, that is a little bit different, right? So you have seen that, I just believe in a lean, disciplined, accountable organization. That’s what I believe. The people that are no longer working here didn’t do anything wrong. These are wonderful professionals, executives that it’s just, you know, in this new iteration, I believe that administratively, we’re going to have to be leaner, rather than, the alternative.” (link)

Following an anonymous letter alleging NCAA violations at Memphis earlier this week, Tigers AD Ed Scott states: “Absolutely, unequivocally, based on every piece of information I have right now today, Penny Hardaway is going to be on that sideline marching up and down and trying to get us a victory when Missouri comes in here.” More from Scott on Hardaway’s impact: “He's doing this not to get paid. He's doing it because he believes he can win and he cares about Memphis and he cares about the institution. And so if that's the common denominator, I love working with someone like that. Working with Penny in this city, anything he does or does not do is going to be national news. And I'm comfortable with that.” (link)

The Daily Memphian’s Geoff Calkins responds to Scott’s strong support of Hardaway: “Scott is comfortable in his own skin. Or he seemed to be sitting across from me Friday morning during a radio interview. The interview was not scheduled in response to recent developments at Memphis. Scott was supposed to be in studio a couple weeks ago, but we changed dates because I was traveling. So I wondered if Scott would cancel. Find a reason not to answer questions about 1) the sudden firing of four members of the basketball staff, including lead assistant Rick Stansbury, and 2) an anonymous letter alleging Hardaway and Memphis had violated numerous NCAA regulations. But there was Scott, right on schedule, ready to answer questions about all those things and more. [...] It’s impossible to listen to that interview and not feel better about the future of Memphis basketball. Not because Scott said that Hardaway will be here forever — he didn’t. But because he sounded like the enterprise will be OK either way.” (link)

“Basically if you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, then it's tough to lead, and that's what you're getting right now from the NCAA.” That’s Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy following the NCAA’s ruling that the Pokes could not put QR codes on their helmets. Gundy continues: “They pulled the uniform code violation on us. I’ll be really honest with you … I think that they do everything they can do now to show that they have a little bit of power. And this was an opportunity for them to say, ‘Okay, we have a little power. We’re gonna make a statement,’ when in theory, you and I both know they don’t have any power anymore. … What I did was, I said, okay, I’m gonna be a soldier. I’m gonna listen. I’m gonna do what I’m told. The reason why is this. They have told me that they would punish the player that went on the field with a QR code on their helmet. I tried to get them to punish me because then, we would roll with it and I would say, ‘Punish me. I don’t care.’ But I’m not gonna allow them to punish a player because those stickers were on their helmets. So, I pulled them off before the first game. But I’m very disappointed in the fact that we’re trying to migrate toward more revenue sharing for the gladiator sport that we’re in. As you know, these guys get beat up and they fight their ass off every day. So we’re trying to reward them, and the NCAA’s trying to go the other way. That’s why we’re in this situation in the first place.” (link)

Longtime Penn State Board of Trustees member and former chairman of the board Ira Lubert, alongside his wife Pam Estadt, have donated $10M in support of renovations to Beaver Stadium. This is the fourth eight-figure donation announced in the past month. Lubert is a former PSU wrestler and National Wrestling Hall of Fame member. The remodeled entrance to Beaver Stadium will be named the Lubert Family Welcome Center. The Nittany Lions have now publicly announced $55M in donations toward the $700M project. (link)

Georgia will increase football season ticket prices and per-seat contribution levels in 2025, and the contribution levels will jump again in 2027. Next season, tickets will rise to $80 per game, up from the current price of $75 for SEC games and $55 for nonconference games. For the 2025 season, Georgia's seven home games will cost $560. Nearly half of season ticket holders will be required to increase their per-seat contribution with new minimum requirements ranging from $250-$710. Club seating ranges from $400 to $7,500 for the new 1929 club (where a contribution of at least $1M is needed). In 2022, the Bulldogs hired to analyze the football fan base before making these changes. UGA says the median increase amount for those impacted is $270 with 25% increasing $130 or less. A quarter of season ticket accounts will increase by $130 or less with 16.9% seeing a decrease and 14.3% staying the same. Other news out of Athens, the new 6K square-foot video board and new premium areas at Stegeman Coliseum have been moved to phase two of the renovation process and won’t be ready for the 2025-26 season, though lighting and sound upgrades will be ready for next season. UCLA QB Chase Griffin talks with the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch about the newly launched, player-led 1919 Players Fund and whether it’s a collective. “People can call it what they want. I see it more as a content studio, I see us almost as a talent agency where we develop UCLA football players and we give them the means of creating content that creates returns on investment with the brands that we work with.” Early partners in the venture include the investment advisory firm SteelPeak Wealth, the Westwood Village Improvement Assn. and Movember, the organization centered around men’s health awareness. Griffin says he built those partnerships via the network of resources he’s cultivated while becoming a two-time NIL Summit athlete of the year. Griffin also says he prefers to think of the Men of Westwood collective as a partner rather than a rival. “If they have content that needs to be executed, let us know. We’re hungry for opportunities, our players are showing that by coming here on a Thursday night that we had off and we have the ability to create any content and create return on investment for any brand.” (link)

+ Bat Cats Central’s Derek Terry reports that Kentucky Baseball HC Nick Mingione has agreed to a “significant contract extension” that could keep him as head coach through the 2029 season. Mingione’s salary this season will now be $1.175M, up from the $805K he was previously slated to earn for the 2025 campaign. In 2026 he’ll earn $1.275M, in 2027 it goes to $1.375M and jumps by $200K in each of the final two years. He’ll also earn an automatic one-year extension whenever the Cats make the NCAA Tournament. If Mingione chooses to leave before the contract is up, he would owe the prorated salary of the remaining contract. That number would be cut in half if Mitch Barnhart is no longer the school’s athletic director. If UK terminates the contract entirely without cause, they would owe Mingione the full remaining amount. (link)
