Georgia College AD Wendell Staton joins the Hangin With the AD podcast to discuss his approach to leadership, hiring, the role of personality tests and lots more. Staton pinpoints authenticity as the one concept that encompasses leadership, adding on how he grows as a leader: “The reality is, I've got to be me, and I've got to be comfortable with me. I can't be Don or Josh. I can pick up some things that I really like from Don or Josh, like I have in our talk today, and I can incorporate that into my way. I'm not going to be able to change who I am, but I can tweak who I am. […] The best way to become better at you is to become better at you.” As he thinks about leading different generations, he emphasizes the need for continued education and knowing how to adjust and reach them. Staton notes the GCSU staff went through the StrengthsFinder assessment, which he used a decade ago when leading the Bobcats. In addition to not overlooking red flags in interviews with prospective staff and coaches, Staton: “I want to make sure that we have the right people who have the right values and I always try to talk them out of taking the job ahead of time and say ‘Hey, here's what we're about. If you're not about this, trust me, it's not going to work, and it's not going to work well for either one of us in the end. So don't make me have to make a decision for you. You make it now.’ And it's why you have to be up front about who you are. and the non-negotiables.” Staton adds that during the hiring process, he tries to bring people to one of the coaches’ houses to find out who people really are in a relaxed setting. The Walsh Men’s and Women’s Rugby team opened their inaugural campaigns with big wins in their first action since joining the Cavaliers from now-closed Notre Dame College. The decision for the coaches, 43 male student-athletes and 22 female student-athletes choosing Walsh came following a bus trip 50 miles south of NDC in their first visit, with several others planned. Director of Rugby Jason Fox: “Some of the team leaders stood up and said, ‘Coach we don't want to muddy the waters, we found a home.’ I got off the bus and told the [Walsh University] President, ‘I think you have a national championship rugby team.’” Walsh President Tim Collins noting: “Rugby was not something we thought about. We weren’t even looking at this as an emerging sport. They gave us a chance to let them look at us. The college they came from is similar to where they're at now, and they knew we were a place focused on people who will serve others.” (link)
