Washington State and Oregon State are targeting Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State as new additions to a rebuilt Pac-12, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “Those schools are expected to soon apply or have already applied for membership into the conference — the first step in the process to complete the deal. They would join the league starting with the 2026 school year. … This is expected to be the first phase in a multi-phase expansion endeavor to reach, at the very least, eight schools — the NCAA’s minimum required to qualify as an FBS conference.” Dellenger goes on to point out that the Pac-12’s board must approve any membership applications “and is expected to soon do so. The deal could be finalized by the end of the week. The expansion is not inexpensive. Each Mountain West school is contractually bound to a $17M exit fee, and the Pac-12 is on the hook for an additional $10-12M penalty fee for every school they acquire as part of a scheduling agreement the conference struck with the Mountain West.” Also from Dellenger: “In negotiations with potential new members, Pac-12 officials and third parties have presented a plan that features a new media rights agreement worth more than the MWC’s current or future television package, as well as the sponsorship potential of the Pac-12 brand.” More. (link)
|
ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirms Dellenger’s reporting and notes the “plan has generated momentum, and the expectation is some membership steps could be taken in the upcoming days. The buyout numbers would be big – $18M per school if there's not two year's withdrawal notice and an additional $43M total of poaching fee. (That's tied to the Pac-12/MWC scheduling agreement.)” (link)
|
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “Those four, along with Washington State and Oregon State, would then decide on additional expansion, according to a source. The Pac-12 must have at least eight members by the summer of 2026 in order to comply with NCAA rules. The six schools could add two more from the Mountain West or seek members from other conferences in order to expand the footprint and increase the number of TV windows for football games.” (link)
|
Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “The Mountain West is aware of media reports regarding the potential departure of several of our members, and we will have more to say in the days ahead. All members will be held to conference bylaws and policies should they elect to depart. The requirements of the scheduling agreement will apply to the Pac-12 should they admit Mountain West members. Our Board of Directors is meeting to determine our next steps. The Mountain West has a proud 25-year history and will continue to thrive in the years ahead.” (link)

The MEAC should focus expansion efforts on DII HBCUs, according to The Analyst’s Gene Clemons, who writes: “MEAC expansion like this would be familiar in the FCS. The move up by D-II programs is not unprecedented in other conferences in recent years as Merrimack, Lindenwood, LIU, Mercyhurst, North Alabama, Stonehill, Tarleton State and West Georgia have made that ascent. All provide realistic road maps for DII HBCU programs to follow. In fact, DII HBCUs have more than held their own in games against the FCS HBCUs. Last year, the DIIs won five times against FCS programs.” Along with Virginia State, Clemons posits that “Virginia Union and Fayetteville State have been the class of CIAA football, and both would make excellent additions to the MEAC because of their location and proximity to other schools within the conference. VUU, like Virginia State, would fit perfectly in the Mid-States with Norfolk State, Howard, Delaware (State) and Morgan State, while Fayetteville State would work perfectly in the south with North Carolina Central and South Carolina State. Over in the SIAC, no DII HBCU was more impressive in 2022 and ‘23 than Benedict College, amassing a 22-2 record in that time. … Such MEAC expansion would increase the number of member schools and allow the conference to offer a football championship game at the end of the season to determine its Celebration Bowl participant – just like the SWAC.” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez sits down with the Houston Roundball Review’s Kris Gardner to discuss an array of topics, including embracing his Cuban American heritage and connecting with the Hispanic American community in Houston. As a fluent Spanish speaker himself, Nuñez says he plans to visit “some of the Hispanic associations. I've already talked to numerous coordinators for these groups, and I've told them I want to be involved. We’re in Hispanic Heritage Month right now and so the ability to tap into my heritage as a Cuban American and in our community that has a Hispanic community that is such a proud community, we've got to do a better job. … I am proud to be a Cuban American, proud of my family, proud of the heritage and I wouldn't be here where I am if it wasn't for them.” Nuñez says fundraising for the football operations building continues to progress, adding: “I think there is the understanding that even if we move in next year there are still things that we have to pay for or a debt that we have to pay. I'm not afraid of that because the fact is there's still so much opportunity for naming rights or anything else in the venue that can help offset those costs. I want to be able to start focusing on other capital projects as well. I think some of our facilities need a little TLC. They don't need to be overhauled, they don't need to be built from scratch, but we need to make them more fan-friendly, we need to make them more convenient, … As we go forward, it's not about spending money to spend money, it's about spending money in the right places that can make an impact.” More from Nuñez on changing the culture, connecting with alumni and sponsors, on-field and other topics. RedBird Capital Partners Founder/AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale believes private equity interest in sports teams has led to “massively inflated” valuations based on “facile notions” about future growth. Cardinale contended during the IMG x RedBird Summit this week that PE’s move into sports had been “bad for the ecosystem” because money was simply being parked in the sector with little effort to improve the performance of the underlying business. “This is about my crowd coming into sports. The problem with my crowd is they are asset managers. They just want to buy stuff, and that’s not great for intellectual property-based businesses.” Sports asset owners, Cardinale continued, too often ask investors to pay “control premium valuations for minority stakes with no governance, no information rights and no exit.” He compared it to the tech bubble where “you put an ‘e’ in front of something and everybody wants it,” adding: “What do [the private equity firms] bring? They bring liquidity, but there’s a better way of doing it. We’re going to need to soft land this because right now it’s massively inflated.” (link)

Indiana has retained Jones Day to conduct an independent review of allegations made by a former men’s basketball student-athlete that he was subjected to “inappropriate prostate and rectal exams during annual physicals” by Dr. Brad Bomba, Sr., who served as a contracted physician for IU athletic teams, including the men’s basketball program, for several decades, concluding in the late 1990s. From IU’s statement: “The review will include witness interviews, a review of available documentation and engagement with medical experts to determine: 1) the background facts related to the annual physicals of IU student athletes conducted by Dr. Bomba, Sr.; 2) if the conduct was appropriate, necessary, or within the standard of care; and 3) what medical professionals and athletic department or university officials were aware of the conduct and, if warranted, what action did they take. To be clear, this is a fully independent and comprehensive investigation that will follow the facts. Indiana University will abide by its findings and take any warranted actions. To protect the integrity of the investigation, the institution will refrain from further comment while the review is ongoing.” (link)

There is debate over whether Arkansas lawmakers should permit casinos to hold 50/50 raffle drawings at sporting events to support NIL endeavors. Saracen Casino & Resort Chief Marketing Officer Carlton Saffa: “So, a 50/50 drawing works like this. You purchase an entry, a ticket, you’re in the pot. The pot grows with the more entries, 50% of it goes to the winning number 50% of it goes to the winning cause. In this instance the cause would be the NIL collective.” As of now, such raffles are banned on mobile devices by a state law that prohibits online games of chance. Oaklawn Racing Resort and Casino GM Wayne Smith says the racetrack is all in for NIL funding having donated $500K for the university to use for NIL efforts a few weeks ago, but he believes that iGaming and NIL don’t need to be combined. Smith emphasizes Oaklawn’s desire to position itself as a destination experience and contends that online gaming could take traveling off the table for some players. “They’re not going to come to our casinos. They’re going to sit at home and play, they’re not going to go to our restaurant, they’re not going to go to retail shops. So the sales tax dollars in all of these communities around the state are going to be impacted.” Meanwhile, Saffa points out the casino makes no money on these raffles and says the “NIL is simply the bonus because the problem is a $5B a year illegal gambling number that we’re wrestling with.” (link)

Under Armour is expecting a larger net loss due to higher-than-expected costs in its restructuring plan, according to Footwear News’ Jean E. Palmieri, who explains that UA previously expected to “incur pretax restructuring and related charges of about $70M to $90M as a result of its fiscal 2025 restructuring plan. However, a decision to close one of its primary distribution facilities in Rialto, Calif., is now expected to result in $70M in charges, bringing the total to between $140M and $160M in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026. That includes cash charges of about $30M in employee severance and benefits costs and $45M related to what it called ‘various transformational initiatives.’ There are also expected to be up to $85M in noncash charges, including about $7M in employee severance and benefits costs and $78M in facility, software and other asset-related charges and impairments.” As a result, UA “updated its fiscal 2025 outlook and is now expecting an operating loss of $220M to $240M versus the previous expectation of $194M to $214M. Adjusted operating income is expected to be $140M to $160M.” (link)

St. John’s makes it official, announcing Fordham AD Ed Kull will take over in the same capacity. St. John’s President Brian Shanley: "Ed Kull has demonstrated a commitment to excellence on and off the field of competition. This is an important hire at a critical time in the shifting landscape of college athletics, and I am pleased to have Ed rejoin our team." Kull: “As a kid from the neighborhood who got his start working as a graduate assistant in Carnesecca Arena, to be able to follow in the footsteps of Jack Kaiser as the athletic director at St. John's is surreal. I understand the work that we have ahead of us will not be easy, but I wholeheartedly believe that we will commit every resource necessary to restore St. John's to its natural place atop the collegiate athletic landscape.” Collegiate Sports Associates assisted with the search. The Missouri Valley Conference extends its media rights deal with ESPN through the 2028-29 season. With the extended partnership, ESPN retains the rights to the men’s basketball tournament semifinals and title game and MVC women’s basketball tournament each year. The agreement will continue to feature multiple men’s basketball and sports telecasts across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. The MVC men’s basketball championship will continue to be broadcast on CBS and streamed live on Paramount+. CBS Sports Network will televise the MVC tournament semifinals — which it has aired for the past nine seasons — as well as a package of regular-season games. MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson: “The five-year extension of the ESPN-MVC media rights agreement emphasizes a long-term collaboration that has worked successfully for decades. While there is an unprecedented climate of change in our industry, particularly in the linear and digital live-event production space, our relationship with ESPN continues to be one of cooperation, innovation and brand promotion.” (link)

More from former Ole Miss/Auburn/Cincinnati Football HC/U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) sitdown on the Now It’s Legal podcast with Athletes.org Founder Jim Cavale, as Tuberville says: “Everybody’s got to have skin in the game” moving forward. “But it all goes back to what we were talking about earlier: education and educating these young men and women to say, ‘Okay, here's the deal. We bring in $120M last year and we spent $135M. Now because we didn't win in basketball and we didn't go to the playoffs in football, you know, so there's going to have to be contracts written up about bonuses paid at the end of the year on merit of what you did. You just can't write a contract for a group of athletes saying this is how much you're going to get every year. You might do a base amount, but you're going to have to have something in there in terms of how well you played, what did you accomplish at the end of the year. You’ll make more money than what you might have made. So, I think you (Cavale) have got a good idea because you got the players involved. And again, if you educate them let them know, ‘You think we're making $100M a year, that's not happening. … That money’s going out the door faster than it’s coming in.” Full podcast. (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork talks about the needed upgrades to Ohio Stadium and explains the question is “how do we maintain that prestige of it, that it is for the state of Ohio, but also modernizing it?” With a budget shortfall estimated at $10M, the Buckeyes need to sell tickets, and Bjork remarks: “Frankly, we need more premium spaces. People want experiential seating. They want clubs. They want things where they can be part of the game still. I think we have good bones, and we have good opportunities.” One such solution involves the 1922 Club, which was announced earlier this week as a “speakeasy style venue that transports guests to a bygone era that pays homage to our illustrious history.” The club will have “limited memberships and will provide an upscale food and beverage option on game days” and be open to members on select non-game days. The ACC and Florida State returned to the courtroom today to argue before the state’s First District Court of Appeals about whether the suit should continue to play out in Tallahassee. ACC attorney Alan Lawson contended that “you have to be wearing garnet-and-gold-colored lenses to come up with Tallahassee as the answer for the most natural place for that contract dispute,” while FSU outside counsel Elliot H. Scherker reiterated the university’s sovereign immunity argument. The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker notes there remains ambiguity concerning the dueling lawsuits that continue to unfold in Florida and North Carolina, with Scherker noting he didn’t “have an answer to that speculative possibility” but that precedents allow for it. Courts can consider exceptional circumstances when weighing whether to pause a case. The possibility of differing rulings, Scherker said, “doesn’t trump exceptional circumstances in a given case.” After all the appeals and judgments are issued, Lawson said there will be “additional litigation in which we find out which judgment isn’t worth the paper that it’s written on.” The three-judge panel did not issue a ruling during the session. Against the backdrop of Northern Illinois’ football victory over Notre Dame and Saint Francis’ (PA) upset over Kent State, CBS’ Dennis Dodd notes that “if the winds continue to blow as they have, these wonderful upsets will become more rare than table manners in a frat house. If the FBS subdivides where only the power schools play, there is less need for them to play the rest of the Group of Five and the FCS.” Red Flash AD James Downer says: "That's always a scary thought. These guys are important to us from a financial perspective. Our kids enjoy playing them. They have an opportunity to go out there with a chip on our shoulders. I'm not going to lie – if these opportunities go away, it's going to affect the bottom line." NIU, meanwhile, with a win over Notre Dame, has an inside track to competing in the College Football Playoff, and Huskies AD Sean Frazier notes: "If you look at our history of winning, it's not like we're going to creep up. … There is something to be said about kids playing for a Power Four, and it's not all that it's cracked up to be. If we stay together, we might shock the world." (link)

Presbyterian announces the Garnet & Blue Collective. Blue Hose AD Dee Nichols: "Our vision is for this organization to function as a collective that is deeply committed to service and community engagement, just like our motto, ‘while we live, we serve.’ The Garnet and Blue Collective is a separate entity and necessary for our student-athletes to be able to engage more wholly in NIL opportunities. We are NOT soliciting funds that donors would otherwise donate to the Scotsman Club or Presbyterian College. We have carefully chosen the Board of Directors as individuals who embody our core values of service and they will examine NIL opportunities involving community engagement and identify resources to fund these projects. Being an active participant in the collective is one more way to support the stellar student-athletes at Presbyterian College." (link)

The Albany men’s basketball-focused Danes of Greatness collective is holding a launch party tonight, and Founder Chris Wyatt explains: “The goal for Wednesday night is to educate those individuals that are attending on what the NCAA says about NIL, on what collectives are, and where things are going with college athletics and athletes being paid. A big part of doing this is because not many people are aware of what a collective is and what they’re doing.” Wyatt didn’t disclose a dollar figure that the collective is trying to raise in its first year and said that “any donations and sponsors is great, everything helps right now,” but that the focus moving forward will be on establishing corporate partnerships that could provide “sustainable income streams” for the collective. A Salt Lake City Judge has ruled that the Deseret News cannot review student-athletes’ NIL contracts in the state of Utah via an open records request. It’s unclear whether the paper plans to appeal the ruling. (link)
