Pac-12 Particulars…
+ Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould: “We will continue to pursue bold cutting-edge opportunities for growth and progress, to best serve our member institutions and student-athletes. I am thankful to our board for their efforts to welcome Boise State University, Colorado State University, California State University, Fresno, and San Diego State University to the conference. An exciting new era for the Pac-12 Conference begins today.” The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points out that with the exit fees and penalties combined, the additions will cost the Pac-12 roughly $110M of its $250M war chest and writes of the schools’ decision to leave the Mountain West: “In the end, the Pac-12’s brand, depleted as it might be, ruled the day. The schools concluded there was more value available — more brand awareness, more sponsorship opportunities, more intellectual property wealth — by competing under the Pac-12 banner than in the Mountain West. … Pac-12 Enterprises also played a role. The production arm of what was the Pac-12 Networks has a broadcast studio and cutting-edge technology that could enhance the media rights component of the rebuilt conference.” Also from Wilner: “The move comes 11 days after the Pac-12 and Mountain West failed to agree to extend their football scheduling partnership into the 2025 season. The former felt the cost ($14M) was too high; the latter would not accept a lower fee. (The Mountain West “overplayed” its hand, according to a source).” (link)
+ Who’s next? Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out that if the “Pac-12’s next preferred expansion targets were in the Mountain West beyond the four already named, they’d likely have taken them this week. They didn’t — a sign that they first may look for easterly candidates. That includes a host of programs, many of them now members of the [AAC], for years the premier Group of 5 league in college athletics. The AAC has the most attractive members from a TV market, brand value and on-field success perspective, including Memphis, Tulane, UTSA, North Texas, Rice and even one in Florida (USF). The Texas schools would make strong travel partners with one another. Same goes with Tulane and Rice, two high academic institutions that are in close proximity (though Rice is a hard sell).” Meanwhile, Dellenger reports AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti is “interested in pursuing Mountain West programs, such as Air Force” and notes the Pac-12 may also look to Texas State. Why not UNLV? “According to those with knowledge of the discussions, separating the two — the University of Nevada and UNLV — is a hurdle. It doesn’t mean it cannot be done. And, perhaps at a later date, they could eventually move together to the Pac-12. Or the hurdle is crossed and UNLV moves alone?” As for the Mountain West, potential new programs include Tarleton State, New Mexico State and UTEP. More from Dellenger. (link)
+ Wilner backs UTSA on the list of potential expansion candidates: “The Roadrunners make loads of sense on a plethora of fronts. They would provide the Pac-12 with the San Antonio media market (No. 31), a football-crazed state, Central Time Zone kickoff options and the resource-heavy University of Texas system. But clawing them away from the American, which has a super-sharp commissioner, Tim Pernetti, could be difficult.” (link)
+ While it’s too early to have a clear idea of the value of a new media rights deal, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points out that “we know one of the measuring sticks for a new deal: $11M per school per year. That’s the approximate amount Cal and Stanford are set to earn from the ACC’s media rights contract for the next seven years, based on their partial-share membership. … Any media rights deal in the same range as the Bay Area schools would qualify as a major psychological victory for Washington State and Oregon State one year after they were cast adrift following the departure of 10 schools from the Pac-12.” As far as whether there will be interest among media companies, former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson weighed in today with the following: “Pac-12 jumps to first in line on the collegiate TV deal front. For a number of reasons their games will be of value to outlets.” Wilner points to ESPN, Fox, The CW and Turner as potential suitors alongside streamers Amazon and Apple. After some back-of-the-napkin math, Wilner concludes: “An average of $10M per school per year seemingly approaches the ceiling for the rebuilt Pac-12 unless 1) the demand side of the marketplace changes substantially or 2) the conference adds two schools that further enhance value.” (link); Also from Thompson: “Streamers will kick the tires. CW probably wants to stay in the game. Question on the minds of TV folks will be is this MWC+ or Pac 12 light?” (link)
+ More from Dellenger: “Mountain West officials are expected, as is protocol in league agreements, to freeze conference revenue distribution to those programs giving notice that they are exiting the conference. That revenue would be used toward their exit fees.” (link)

AD for Major Gifts Pat Bostick, Men’s Basketball HC Jeff Capel, former NFL All-Pro Aaron Donald, Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance/CFO Dwayne Pinkney, retired Executive Assoc. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman talks to Big Ten leaders about the lingering uncertainty surrounding roster caps and revenue distribution. Iowa AD Beth Goetz, on marketability vs Title IX adherence: “It would be wonderful if that was a directive that would be provided, either from the settlement and or from the Office of Civil Rights. I think the likelihood that we’ll have clear direction there is probably not good. So you’re going to kind of lean on which legal arguments you think apply in different cases. The legal case is built on the fact that there’s a market value for a particular group of students. So if you were to follow Title IX, you’ve got, perhaps, some legal issues there. And if you follow market, you probably have some legal issues there. There’s not a clear path forward in that sense.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown gets more commentary from the office of South Dakota's Attorney General about the complaint filed against the NCAA and the proposed House settlement. Asked about the goal of filing the complaint, a spokesperson for AG Marty Jackley told Brown: “The NCAA did not address our concerns about the South Dakota schools paying a disproportionate share of the settlement cost or working to make the settlement amount more equal for female student-athletes. We certainly remain open to resolving this as long as both the disproportionate share and unfair treatment of female athletes are adequately addressed.” The complaint did have the support of many groups including “the Board of Regents, the university Presidents, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Governor,” and the timing of the filing had nothing to do with last week’s settlement hearing. Further, a spokesperson stated the complaint will continue to move forward “unless the NCAA takes substantial steps to address our concerns,” regardless of the outcome of the settlement conversations. What about the latest private equity vs. private credit talk? Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams writes: “I’m beginning to wonder whether more traditional private equity might be a more successful approach. [...] Establishing a way to sell equity, particularly in different classes of shares, would also enable other opportunities for schools. I believe they’ll soon explore the possibility of giving equity to boosters, a way to shift their donor relationships from philanthropic to entrepreneurial. It doesn’t seem crazy that at some point coaches—or eventually, athletes—could earn vesting equity as part of their pay packages.” On the new Clemson Ventures initiative, Tigers AD Graham Neff indicates, per Novy-Williams, “the department would consider outside capital only if it is revenue-generating in nature—via new opportunities or facilities.” Neff: “That’s not the means to the end—that’s not the tail wagging the dog. But admittedly yes, those are very interrelated discussions.” North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham also weighs in: “I do think that building something together, where you share in the upside going out, is something that’s likely to happen in the future.” More. (link)

Florida A&M Interim AD Michael Smith reports the Rattlers are projected to have a positive fund balance for 2023-24. Smith: “For six years, we’ve brought in a balanced budget. So, we’re very excited about the opportunity to do that. There was a lot of coordination between multiple stakeholders within the enterprise. So, it was not something we did alone. We did it with all of you. And we appreciate the support.” For FY25, FAMU is projecting an $11.3M budget, with gate receipts, NCAA and conference revenue down from $5.33M in FY24 to $4.79M and game guarantees up nearly $600K to $2.02M. Kansas partners with Deloitte and its US College Athletics practice to work on best positioning the Jayhawks for the future. The partnership will explore KU’s revenue generation opportunities, revenue sharing and commercial NIL roadmap, financial planning, brand valuation and more. AD Travis Goff: “In an incredible time of transformation in collegiate athletics, we see a unique opportunity to chart a path forward as a national leader. Effective leadership requires humility and a willingness to bring in outside perspective and vantage points. That approach has served us well to date and it is even more imperative at this time to work with a strategic firm like Deloitte.” (link)

Facility Files…
+ Murray State unveils plans for a reimagined CFSB Center with an eight-figure project that would include a courtside premium seating club, loge boxes, ribbon boards and more, with further plans for an NIL studio, “nutrition oasis,” rehab space, hydrotherapy room and more. From an enhanced basketball game day experience, to concerts and new external activation, our arena will now be one of the top entertainment hubs in our state.” Conceptual renderings galore included. Washington State and Oregon State are targeting Boise State, San Diego State, Colorado State and Fresno State as new additions to a rebuilt Pac-12, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who reports: “Those schools are expected to soon apply or have already applied for membership into the conference — the first step in the process to complete the deal. They would join the league starting with the 2026 school year. … This is expected to be the first phase in a multi-phase expansion endeavor to reach, at the very least, eight schools — the NCAA’s minimum required to qualify as an FBS conference.” Dellenger goes on to point out that the Pac-12’s board must approve any membership applications “and is expected to soon do so. The deal could be finalized by the end of the week. The expansion is not inexpensive. Each Mountain West school is contractually bound to a $17M exit fee, and the Pac-12 is on the hook for an additional $10-12M penalty fee for every school they acquire as part of a scheduling agreement the conference struck with the Mountain West.” Also from Dellenger: “In negotiations with potential new members, Pac-12 officials and third parties have presented a plan that features a new media rights agreement worth more than the MWC’s current or future television package, as well as the sponsorship potential of the Pac-12 brand.” More. (link)
|
ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirms Dellenger’s reporting and notes the “plan has generated momentum, and the expectation is some membership steps could be taken in the upcoming days. The buyout numbers would be big – $18M per school if there's not two year's withdrawal notice and an additional $43M total of poaching fee. (That's tied to the Pac-12/MWC scheduling agreement.)” (link)
|
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “Those four, along with Washington State and Oregon State, would then decide on additional expansion, according to a source. The Pac-12 must have at least eight members by the summer of 2026 in order to comply with NCAA rules. The six schools could add two more from the Mountain West or seek members from other conferences in order to expand the footprint and increase the number of TV windows for football games.” (link)
|
Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “The Mountain West is aware of media reports regarding the potential departure of several of our members, and we will have more to say in the days ahead. All members will be held to conference bylaws and policies should they elect to depart. The requirements of the scheduling agreement will apply to the Pac-12 should they admit Mountain West members. Our Board of Directors is meeting to determine our next steps. The Mountain West has a proud 25-year history and will continue to thrive in the years ahead.” (link)

The MEAC should focus expansion efforts on DII HBCUs, according to The Analyst’s Gene Clemons, who writes: “MEAC expansion like this would be familiar in the FCS. The move up by D-II programs is not unprecedented in other conferences in recent years as Merrimack, Lindenwood, LIU, Mercyhurst, North Alabama, Stonehill, Tarleton State and West Georgia have made that ascent. All provide realistic road maps for DII HBCU programs to follow. In fact, DII HBCUs have more than held their own in games against the FCS HBCUs. Last year, the DIIs won five times against FCS programs.” Along with Virginia State, Clemons posits that “Virginia Union and Fayetteville State have been the class of CIAA football, and both would make excellent additions to the MEAC because of their location and proximity to other schools within the conference. VUU, like Virginia State, would fit perfectly in the Mid-States with Norfolk State, Howard, Delaware (State) and Morgan State, while Fayetteville State would work perfectly in the south with North Carolina Central and South Carolina State. Over in the SIAC, no DII HBCU was more impressive in 2022 and ‘23 than Benedict College, amassing a 22-2 record in that time. … Such MEAC expansion would increase the number of member schools and allow the conference to offer a football championship game at the end of the season to determine its Celebration Bowl participant – just like the SWAC.” (link)

Houston AD Eddie Nuñez sits down with the Houston Roundball Review’s Kris Gardner to discuss an array of topics, including embracing his Cuban American heritage and connecting with the Hispanic American community in Houston. As a fluent Spanish speaker himself, Nuñez says he plans to visit “some of the Hispanic associations. I've already talked to numerous coordinators for these groups, and I've told them I want to be involved. We’re in Hispanic Heritage Month right now and so the ability to tap into my heritage as a Cuban American and in our community that has a Hispanic community that is such a proud community, we've got to do a better job. … I am proud to be a Cuban American, proud of my family, proud of the heritage and I wouldn't be here where I am if it wasn't for them.” Nuñez says fundraising for the football operations building continues to progress, adding: “I think there is the understanding that even if we move in next year there are still things that we have to pay for or a debt that we have to pay. I'm not afraid of that because the fact is there's still so much opportunity for naming rights or anything else in the venue that can help offset those costs. I want to be able to start focusing on other capital projects as well. I think some of our facilities need a little TLC. They don't need to be overhauled, they don't need to be built from scratch, but we need to make them more fan-friendly, we need to make them more convenient, … As we go forward, it's not about spending money to spend money, it's about spending money in the right places that can make an impact.” More from Nuñez on changing the culture, connecting with alumni and sponsors, on-field and other topics. RedBird Capital Partners Founder/AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale believes private equity interest in sports teams has led to “massively inflated” valuations based on “facile notions” about future growth. Cardinale contended during the IMG x RedBird Summit this week that PE’s move into sports had been “bad for the ecosystem” because money was simply being parked in the sector with little effort to improve the performance of the underlying business. “This is about my crowd coming into sports. The problem with my crowd is they are asset managers. They just want to buy stuff, and that’s not great for intellectual property-based businesses.” Sports asset owners, Cardinale continued, too often ask investors to pay “control premium valuations for minority stakes with no governance, no information rights and no exit.” He compared it to the tech bubble where “you put an ‘e’ in front of something and everybody wants it,” adding: “What do [the private equity firms] bring? They bring liquidity, but there’s a better way of doing it. We’re going to need to soft land this because right now it’s massively inflated.” (link)

Indiana has retained Jones Day to conduct an independent review of allegations made by a former men’s basketball student-athlete that he was subjected to “inappropriate prostate and rectal exams during annual physicals” by Dr. Brad Bomba, Sr., who served as a contracted physician for IU athletic teams, including the men’s basketball program, for several decades, concluding in the late 1990s. From IU’s statement: “The review will include witness interviews, a review of available documentation and engagement with medical experts to determine: 1) the background facts related to the annual physicals of IU student athletes conducted by Dr. Bomba, Sr.; 2) if the conduct was appropriate, necessary, or within the standard of care; and 3) what medical professionals and athletic department or university officials were aware of the conduct and, if warranted, what action did they take. To be clear, this is a fully independent and comprehensive investigation that will follow the facts. Indiana University will abide by its findings and take any warranted actions. To protect the integrity of the investigation, the institution will refrain from further comment while the review is ongoing.” (link)

There is debate over whether Arkansas lawmakers should permit casinos to hold 50/50 raffle drawings at sporting events to support NIL endeavors. Saracen Casino & Resort Chief Marketing Officer Carlton Saffa: “So, a 50/50 drawing works like this. You purchase an entry, a ticket, you’re in the pot. The pot grows with the more entries, 50% of it goes to the winning number 50% of it goes to the winning cause. In this instance the cause would be the NIL collective.” As of now, such raffles are banned on mobile devices by a state law that prohibits online games of chance. Oaklawn Racing Resort and Casino GM Wayne Smith says the racetrack is all in for NIL funding having donated $500K for the university to use for NIL efforts a few weeks ago, but he believes that iGaming and NIL don’t need to be combined. Smith emphasizes Oaklawn’s desire to position itself as a destination experience and contends that online gaming could take traveling off the table for some players. “They’re not going to come to our casinos. They’re going to sit at home and play, they’re not going to go to our restaurant, they’re not going to go to retail shops. So the sales tax dollars in all of these communities around the state are going to be impacted.” Meanwhile, Saffa points out the casino makes no money on these raffles and says the “NIL is simply the bonus because the problem is a $5B a year illegal gambling number that we’re wrestling with.” (link)

Under Armour is expecting a larger net loss due to higher-than-expected costs in its restructuring plan, according to Footwear News’ Jean E. Palmieri, who explains that UA previously expected to “incur pretax restructuring and related charges of about $70M to $90M as a result of its fiscal 2025 restructuring plan. However, a decision to close one of its primary distribution facilities in Rialto, Calif., is now expected to result in $70M in charges, bringing the total to between $140M and $160M in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026. That includes cash charges of about $30M in employee severance and benefits costs and $45M related to what it called ‘various transformational initiatives.’ There are also expected to be up to $85M in noncash charges, including about $7M in employee severance and benefits costs and $78M in facility, software and other asset-related charges and impairments.” As a result, UA “updated its fiscal 2025 outlook and is now expecting an operating loss of $220M to $240M versus the previous expectation of $194M to $214M. Adjusted operating income is expected to be $140M to $160M.” (link)
