A-R-C Commissioner Hammes has resigned after a year and a half leading the conference to spend more time with his family. Central President/Presidents Council Chair Putnam: “Dan stepped in at an important time and effectively navigated a number of challenges. He is well organized and brought discipline and focus to the work of the conference. He has been attentive and responsive to the position’s many areas of responsibility. Dan is very well regarded by the conference presidents, and we regret his departure. The witness list for Wednesday's House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing on college sports and NIL titled “Taking the Buzzer Beater to the Bank: Protecting College Athletes’ NIL Dealmaking Rights” includes no DIII representatives, with one DII and three DI leaders. Front Office Sports’ Christovich notes NCAA President Baker’s absence from the list but points out he could potentially attend remotely. “Also, I’m told Baker won’t hold pressers at either Final Four like Emmert used to.” (link, link)

Yahoo’s Wetzel observes that NCAA President Baker appears to be straying from the free market ideals that helped popularize him as governor of Massachusetts as he pushes for “consumer protection” on the NIL front. “Baker is being naive here, hopefully on purpose. … What Baker is proposing is a claw back of control by claiming the NCAA is just looking out for these poor players who otherwise might get duped by a bad actor who might not fulfill some NIL promise or contract.” Baker’s desire for the NCAA to have knowledge over NIL deals “while also controlling the terms of all deals via its own contract language” is “obtrusive and invasive and limits the free-market potential of student-athletes,” Wetzel argues. “That’s why this is more than a backdoor power play cloaked in well-meaning protectionism. This is the NCAA still not recognizing its athletes will either do just fine on their own or learn some lessons so they do fine on their own the next time.” (link)

+ Manchester is the latest to add Women’s Wrestling, becoming the 50th DIII program when the Spartans hit the mat in 2024-25. MU has elevated Men’s Wrestling HC Hardman to Director of Wrestling, with plans to hire Assoc. HCs for each program. AD Espeset: "The time is right to launch a women's wrestling program at Manchester University. Interest in girls wrestling in high school is exploding and we are seeing that in Indiana. We want to be at the forefront of helping grow the sport, providing the student-athlete experience to even more of our students and offering women the chance to compete at the college level.
