Charlotte AD Mike Hill inks a four-year contract extension. Chancellor Sharon Gaber: "With his trademark gold standard of excellence, Mike Hill has propelled Charlotte 49ers Athletics, fostering a culture of excellence throughout our programs. West Virginia AD Wren Baker sits down with the Blue & Gold News’ Greg Hunter and discusses a turbulent 12 months in Morgantown on the men’s hoops front, about which he says: “Now that last year is behind us, I can admit it was the hardest year I ever had professionally. Everyone has some hard years, but you just add in the way everything had happened. Then we all know how important our sports programs are to the state. The weight of that definitely is something you can feel. Adversity is not fun when you’re going through it, but when you reflect back on it afterward, you understand how much you grew. I feel like we emerged from that with me having a better understanding of the University, of the fan base and of the state.” Overall, Baker believes the Mountaineers had a “great year overall,” noting: “When you look across at most of our sports, we had the best seasons, if not one of the best, in most everything else (outside women’s soccer and men’s basketball). I’m really proud of our student-athletes and our coaches. I’m really proud of our support base – our fans and our community. We had some very large crowds in women’s basketball, the largest crowds ever in men’s soccer, our largest crowds ever in baseball. If you looked at how our fans came out and supported us, it was pretty special. West Virginia loves any team that goes out and represents the state in a positive manner.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher is also told the Pac-12 prefers to settle on nine members for football and basketball scheduling purposes and adds: “There’s also a good reason why the Pac-12 is in a hurry to finish expansion, despite the July 1, 2026, deadline to reach eight schools. Membership requirements in other conferences dictate a one-year notice to withdraw. That means the Pac-12 only has until June of 2025 to get things finalized, which makes getting the decisions made by the end of this calendar year a target. I was told by an involved source: ‘Stay close.’ If we’re looking at Pac-12 expansion ONLY through a media value lens, then Tulane, Memphis, and [UTSA] are at the front of the line, per my consultant friends. One reliable and wise media-world source told me: ‘Taking Air Force along with Army and Navy wouldn’t be a bad idea, either. Service games are good TV.’” On how closely tied Nevada and UNLV are and how that might impact UNLV’s departure to the Pac-12, Canzano “was reminded by a former conference commissioner…that there’s a precedent to divide the schools. UNLV joined the WAC and left Nevada behind in the Big West in 1994. Also, the current governor of Nevada, Joe Lombardo, is a UNLV alum. If UNLV and Air Force don’t land in the Pac-12, I’ll bet the American Athletic Conference would take them both. I’m told there has already been contact between those sides.” (link)

Korn Ferry and D1.ticker partnered to invite 24 current ADs and executive-level leaders positioned to guide the industry into the future to take the Korn Ferry Four Dimensional (KF4D) leadership assessment. Built over the last 50 years, the KF4D takes a “whole person” view of leaders, providing information about how they typically prefer to work as measured against 56 elements. For the assessment, Korn Ferry compared this cohort of college leaders’ scores to the benchmark scores of the aspirational Enterprise Business Leader success profile in order to quantify current strengths and identify areas for improvement. Korn Ferry Head of Collegiate Sports Jenna McLaughlin explains that “enterprise leaders are those who sit at the helm of highly transformational companies that deliver extraordinary results. They perform and transform. … As college athletics continues to evolve, athletic directors must now respond to multiple stakeholders simultaneously, all while they handle challenges more complex, situations more ambiguous and duties more significant than their predecessors faced which is where enterprise leadership comes in.” The college leader cohort over-indexed the enterprise leadership success profile in the areas of strategic mindset, collaboration and balancing stakeholders while falling short in the areas of managing ambiguity and customer focus. One participating AD said of the assessment: “This exercise and assessment provided critical insight and analysis to stimulate thought-provoking discussion. Maximizing outcomes for very complicated situations starts by better understanding and knowing yourself.” More on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

Former Florida AD Jeremy Foley joins Texas A&M sports management professor Gregg Bennett’s class to discuss topics including his upbringing and journey to Gainesville, the ups and downs during his time leading the Gators, the future of college athletics and lots more in between. In discussing the power of college athletics, Foley compares sports to a big window through which the world gets a look at the whole university. “If you’re playing it well and you’re on TV a lot and you’re representing well, you can be a tremendous asset to our great institutions. And, conversely, when you're not doing it well – I'm not even talking about just winning – but not living your life the right way or having coach who is not living their life the right way and athletes doing things wrong…then people look at your university and it doesn't look right, doesn't look the same. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to run our programs the right way.” Foley also talks about investing in women’s sports and says when a student-athlete decides to come to an institution like Florida or Texas A&M that means they could have likely gone anywhere in the country. “So, don’t we have the responsibility to reward that choice by giving them the best experience possible? … And we didn’t do it because of Title IX. That’s the legal obligation. I always said we had a moral obligation. It is the right thing to do. How do I sit in front of a woman and her parents and say, ‘We want you to come here, but your experience is going to be less than our starting quarterback’s?’ How could you even have that conversation? How could you even look at anybody?” More from Foley. (link)

Morehouse (DII) Football HC Terance Mathis was asked if the team is preparing to move up to DI and said: “Yes, there has been talk about moving up, and we’re preparing ourselves for that. If that is the future of this program, we’ll be ready when it happens. … My job is to make this program better for the future, and if moving to Division I is part of that, we’ll be ready.” Should Morehouse make the move, HBCU Gameday’s Cobi Simmons notes it would “renew the Black Ivy League rivalry with Howard University, another one of the most celebrated HBCUs in the country.” (link)

Johnson v. NCAA plaintiffs’ co-counsel Paul McDonald pens a guest post for Sportico in which he notes the NCAA “opposes college athletes having the same employee rights and protections as student ticket-takers, student seating-attendants and student food concessions workers at NCAA contests. Since Berger v. NCAA was filed in 2014, the NCAA has made its argument by relying upon legal precedent to compare college athletes to unpaid prison labor under the 13th Amendment ‘slavery exception.’ Yet sports media has largely, and inexcusably, failed to cover this outlandish argument at the time of this writing. … To recap, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude ‘except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.’ Vanskike v. Peters is the seminal case establishing that prisoners, therefore, are precluded from recognition as employees under federal laws. The NCAA has relied upon Vanskike v. Peters to argue that its tradition of amateurism should be given the same legal deference, and legal effect, as this ‘slavery exception,’ i.e., that NCAA members have the right to treat college athletes like convicted prisoners.” McDonald notes the Third Circuit Court of Appeals rejected this argument over the summer, yet sports media said nothing. Nor did the media speak up when Rev. Al Sharpton and NFLPA issued a joint statement denouncing the NCAA’s prison labor comparison. … Since this is football season, consider this Op-Ed a hand-off to sports media, which, to make its living, relies upon access to black people in college and pro sports. I implore sports media to run with this story, call this flagrant foul, and respect black history and dignity.” (link)

College football GMs, Directors of Player Personnel and other staffers are seeing marked increases in their salaries as their duties expand, 247Sports’ Chris Hummer observes, noting that “the sweeping nature of the job, with salaries that haven't always matched up to the demand, has often led to major turnover in the profession.” 247Sports national analyst Cooper Petagna, a former DPP at Washington and Director of Recruiting at Oregon, tells Hummer: "It's more of an all-encompassing job than people tend to think sometimes. … When you're trying to rationalize it in your head: Is this making sense with how much I'm investing of my life into this and what the payout is financially?" Which is why Alabama GM Courtney Morgan’s $825K salary represents a “watershed moment in the industry,” and Hummer notes Morgan is one of several such staffers making over $300K per year. Others include Oregon Chief of Staff Marshall Malchow ($550K), LSU Senior Assoc. AD for Football Administration Austin Thomas ($425K), Ole Miss GM Billy Glasscock ($425K), Texas Tech GM James Blanchard ($400K) and Auburn GM John Miller ($360K). Blanchard on the difference between college and NFL GMs. "Coaches see schemes and how this guy fits into what I do. Personnel people see skill set and what's the upside of this guy if coaches get him to buy into what we do. It sounds similar but it's two very different lenses. If you think about it from that perspective, it makes a hell of a lot of sense why the NFL split it up.” (link)

USF students have claimed a record 14,535 tickets for Saturday's game against Miami (FL), prompting the Bulls to open the upper deck at Raymond James Stadium, where capacity will now be 55,000, ESPN’s Andrea Adelson reports. (link)

ESPN is making a profit off the Pat McAfee Show, the Washington Post’s Ben Strauss tells Puck’s John Ourand: “I did ask ESPN…does The Pat McAfee Show make money for ESPN? And the answer was yes.” Strauss says ESPN didn’t give him specific numbers, saying only that the company is bringing in more money off McAfee’s show than it is paying him on the five-year $85M licensing deal. Awful Announcing’s Brendon Kleen: “Before PMS took over the noon-2 p.m. ET slot on ESPN, the network aired SportsCenter and This Just In with Max Kellerman. So the first factor in the financial calculus around PMS is how ESPN’s cost structure changed from producing those two shows versus licensing PMS. It’s possible and perhaps even likely that ESPN saved some money by paying a flat $15M a year for those two hours of programming which would lower the bar of how much money those two hours would have to bring in to breakeven.” (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes met with the media before yesterday’s Civil War kick with Oregon. Of note on Pac-12 dynamics: “In terms of who we add and how, what I'd say is there are no limitations. We'll go after the best. [...] We think it's anywhere between two — to meet that NCAA minimum — or four. [...] We've already started in earnest with our first meeting yesterday to look at the landscape. There is great interest in this very early stage. In terms of timing, I'd love for us to see this wrapped up as soon as possible. [...] We'll share terms of a deal (at a later date), but it's a long term grant of rights. Everybody is nice and buckled in and committed for the long term. [...] We talk a lot about brand and valuation, really important of course. But academic and athletic success is really critical in this process. We look at culture and geography to a degree. All those things combined give us a decision matrix if you will on how to move forward. [...] We wouldn't be able to share terms with you on the dollars, but I do want to say this. When you think about the foundational group we have now and the potential of who we may add, we feel great about going out to the marketplace and commanding a really good deal.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey: “Where the conversation really started to escalate was after the negotiations ended with the Mountain West and the Pac-12 in terms of the scheduling alliance.” (link)
|
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff yesterday morning: “Sources tell me that the Pac-12 has some interest in Tulane & Memphis. The rub with UNLV is they would have to probably take Nevada too since it's the same school board & that issue may make it a deterrent there.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports the Pac-12 is most likely looking at three additional members, not just two. Per a source: “That gives you eight conference games. In basketball, you could go a little bigger if an opportunity presents.” Canzano: “Could Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s become Pac-12 members in basketball only? Is there enough added value there for the Pac-12 to do that? [...] The Pac-12’s expansion also opens the door for the conference to negotiate a larger CFP distribution. I doubt the SEC/Big Ten will be eager to share more of the playoff pie, but Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould undoubtedly has more leverage. There’s a ‘look-in’ clause in the current deal that provides a window to renegotiate.” (link)

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen on speculation surrounding a potential FBS move for the Bison: “I think we’ve made our intentions pretty clear. I think our fan base always wants us to do a plane-in-the-sky and for us to come out and do it that way. In my mind, that’s not the way things happen. We’ve made it very clear on where we want our institution to be and so we’ll take it from there. [...] If those things are played in the public and the media, that’s how those things usually get submarined. So I think the fact it was quiet until really two days ago just speaks to, one, the importance of it but also to get it over the finish line it’s something that has to be somewhat confidential.” (link)

Bloomberg’s Peter Robison & Noah Buhayar tell the story of Michigan State Football student-athletes seriously contemplating boycotting last year’s game at Iowa after receiving an email from MSU-affiliated collective Spartan Dawgs 4 Life discontinuing NIL payments for some players. “At the hotel, (Interim HC Harlan) Barnett told the players not to head up to their rooms so he could hold a meeting first, according to a person familiar with the situation who declined to be identified revealing team discussions. Barnett told them what the collective had done wasn’t right and he’d understand if they didn’t play—but he hoped they would, and he believed they would win. (Barnett declined to comment for this story.) Other coaches shuttled among the players, trying to calm them down, according to two people there who declined to be identified.” An unnamed former Big Ten assistant coach: “It happens a ton. I had to do that to a few kids, and it was like, ‘Hey, I can’t really do anything about it.’” Lots more, though most is ground already covered on macro issues that have reshaped the industry. (link)

On3’s Nick De La Torre reports Florida has called a Board of Trustees meeting for this morning. USA Today’s Matt Hayes also says “A group of Florida boosters have pulled together money to cover the expense of firing coach Billy Napier.” $26M is the number. No indication on the timing of such a move. (link, link)

An outbreak of whooping cough among Portland State football players led team doctors to call off the Vikings’ game against South Dakota yesterday. According to an agreement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions, South Carolina State failed to monitor student-athlete eligibility during the 2021-22 academic year, resulting in four student-athletes in three sports competing while ineligible. The school also agreed that it failed to maintain squad lists for 14 sports over two academic years. In an unrelated violation, former men's basketball AC Marcus Sikes failed to cooperate with an investigation into possible recruiting inducements in the MBB program. The school and the enforcement staff agreed that the eligibility violations in this case occurred after an extensive ransomware attack that affected the school's information technology and automated processes. Penalties: one-year probation, $10K in fines, 2.5% reduction in football, women’s basketball and women’s soccer scholarships during the 2024-25 academic year, the vacation of all records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible and a three-year show-cause for Sikes. DirecTV and Disney have reached an agreement in principle. Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher: “After continued negotiations between DirecTV and Disney, the sides achieved a breakthrough that gives the distributor the flexibility it sought to offer consumers genre-specific programming bundles, including in sports, while providing Disney some fee increases for carriage of its channels.” Key terms, per Fisher: An ability for DirecTV to offer consumers multiple genre-specific “skinny bundles,” including in sports; A packaging of DirecTV subscriptions with Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming services, including ESPN+; Rights for DirecTV to offer its customers ESPN’s forthcoming flagship streaming service at no additional cost.; Continued carriage for Disney channels on DirecTV at “market-based terms.” (link)

On College GameDay yesterday, one of the featured stories was the history of the song Sandstorm getting to the South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium speakers. Former Gamecocks’ Deputy AD for External Affairs/current WMT Senior Director of Innovation Eric Nichols recalls: “When you’re producing a game from that position, you’re trying to give your team the best chance to win. We had a list of what we called ‘hot songs’, that you played when there was a momentum shift in the game, and Sandstorm was one of them.” The “birth” of the tradition happened in 2009 when then-fourth-ranked Ole Miss was trying to win it at the end. After a stop by the Gamecocks defense on second down, Sandstorm was played, then played again after the stop on third down and South Carolina held on for the win and a new go-to song. Current Gamecocks’ Football HC Shane Beamer was an AC in Columbia at the time Sandstorm became the tradition. He admits that when he was at Oklahoma as an AC a few years ago, and he was going for the SC job, his wife and kids would play Sandstorm in the kitchen when he would walk in. Last year the school brought Darude, the Finnish DJ who made the song, to a home game to play it for the crowd. More. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini checks in with NCAA Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw regarding the debate about whether the break at the end of the second and fourth quarters should be called a “two-minute timeout” or a “two-minute warning.” Shaw: “We’re not warning anybody of anything, so we’re going to adopt those words. … Our TV partners have been pretty good about recognizing the name is a little different than the NFL. There’s been jokes here and there, but I think it describes what it really is. It’s that timeout. … We’re not warning anybody. Everybody knows the time. We just named it that. We didn’t think that would be a big thing and that anybody would talk about it. But it’s been funny. If it’s brought more attention to it, I don’t know. But I think we’re settled in on the language and everybody gets it.” (link)

UFC CEO Dana White talked about the company’s Noche live event from The Sphere and says: “There's a movie that's going to run in the Sphere. There are chapters to this movie. So before each fight is a movie, and you will be focused on the Sphere and the screen. Then the fighters will walk out...then the fight is the star of the show. When that's over, there will be another movie, then a fight. … This movie that I'm talking about and these chapters tell the history of combat sports in Mexico, the history of the Mexican people, their traditions.” Sportico’s Jacob Feldman asks whether any images of the event could come out ahead of time, and White says: “Lenee [Breckenridge], my head of PR…never hears the word ‘no’ from me, ever. She gets what she wants all the time. She’s been torturing me to put out images of the event. I won’t do it. I will not put out one image of this event. … There are six different movies that will air that night, and not one image will come out before the event.” White adds: “If this goes the way I hope it goes, I’d love to repackage this thing and have it run all year at the Sphere, where people could come into town and go experience it.” White also confirms there will be haptic motors in the seats so they rumble in sync with the action. “This event is such a game-changer, this is where entertainment and sports truly come together. I think people who are building arenas from here on out or redoing their arenas start looking at stuff like this. … The Super Bowl rolls in these unbelievable concerts. The NBA and all these other sports leagues—and the arenas—are going to start stepping up and changing what the halftime, and the rest of their entertainment other than just the game, looks like.” (link, link); Here’s a quick look at the vibe inside The Sphere last night.
