CollegeAD reports details of FAU AD Brian White’s recent contract extension: The term is through 2029, but it’s a rolling five-year deal that includes a base pay increased from $500K to $725K. There’s also a 3% annual escalator & a 10% annual retention bonus. Performance bonuses max out at 20% of base pay. Notably, if White were to exit during the first year of the deal he’d owe $725K, an amount that decreases in subsequent years of the agreement to $675K, $625K, $575K & $525K. (link)

South Carolina President Michael Amiridis says he’s looking for “record over promise” in the next leader of the Gamecocks. More: “I want somebody who is experienced. He is, or she is, in this position, and there is a strong framework.” Will outgoing AD Ray Tanner be involved in the selection of his successor? Tanner: “I will not be directly involved in that capacity. Should I be able to provide some background, I will certainly do that. But I don’t anticipate being involved in (choosing) the replacement.” (link)

Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel has not talked to the media yet about characteristics or experiences she’ll value in the hire of a new AD, but longtime hoops journalist Mike DeCourcy, who is from the Steel City, warns: “There’s the possibility of getting this really wrong. Every change isn’t an improvement. [...] You have to have familiarity with the terrain. If you don’t, it’s going to be very hard to be successful. [...] The future of the ACC is essential to Pitt’s athletic future. The new athletic director absolutely has to be committed to that.” Panthers donor Gavin Williams also chimes in: “You’re in an urban area where the people who have deep pockets, they’re not all Pitt people. And if they are Pitt people, they’re not solely Pitt people. [Pitt] has kinda been a second-tier player, and I think NIL has made it worse. People seem to think there’s this untapped potential for Pitt to do huge things in fundraising because it’s Pittsburgh, but I’ve been hearing that for 35 years. I see no evidence of that. [...] One thing I loved about Heather was her ambition. She didn’t accept, ‘This is Pitt. This is the way things are.’ She made some real ambitious changes. Did those get her into trouble? Maybe. But I don’t want someone who accepts the realities. I want somebody who tries to go beyond that.” (link)

Wyoming AD Tom Burman points to the importance of the remaining eight Mountain West programs sticking together: “If (these) eight can stay together and we can add some teams, we can really be a good league. There is some exposure obviously. The Pac-12 has six members today, so they need to add two (more). You've got to have eight per the NCAA. So, they're going to add two more and it appears they're looking to the Southeast part of the country for (an) additional two or possibly four. If they fail, it's likely they're going to circle back to the Mountain West, and we could lose an additional member or two members. So that's why expansion is very, very important.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports that “multiple industry professionals told me yesterday that the chances of Cal and Stanford leaving the ACC to re-join the Pac-12 are close to zero percent. For one, as plenty of other national reporters have noted, both schools signed the Grant of Rights agreement with the ACC, binding themselves to the league for the next several years.” Even if the GOR is struck down in court, Brown is told the two schools “would not be considered likely expansion candidates. After all, Cal and Stanford decided to join the ACC specifically in part to avoid conference affiliation with the Boise States and Fresno States of the world. The current six-team Pac-12 is not a great cultural or competitive fit for the Cal and Stanford Olympic sports programs. I understand the geographic reasons why commentators and fans would point to a potential reunion…but I wouldn’t bet on it.” Big Sky schools are also likely to stay put, as Brown points out the “costs to move from the Big Sky to either the MWC or Pac-12, I’m told, would represent an annual ‘eight-figure commitment,’ not to mention the new $5M reclassification fee due to the NCAA. While a reclassification would increase media rights revenues, as well as earning from guarantee games, there was little confidence from anybody that I’ve spoken to, or anything I’ve read, to suggest that FCS teams from that league would be interested in making a jump right now.” More from Brown, including at least three institutions who have hired consulting firms to help “prepare themselves” for a potential conference move. (link)

A Mountain West source to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander: “You've gotta be excited, because the alternative is being one of those teams being left behind. Whether it's the perfect move for us or not, it doesn't matter. The alternative is you're the Summit League or the old WAC.” Norlander continues, says there should be only one objective - from a hoops standpoint - for the Pac-12: “GO GET GONZAGA. [...] There is no school that would create more positive feedback, bigger headlines and bring a bigger reputation boost to the reborn Pac-12 moving forward than the Zags. Gonzaga has such national cachet, it would instantly be the flagship basketball entity in this league.” An unnamed West Coast Conference source on the options for the Zags given an unknown future of how the industry will operate: “It's risky.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman dives into who the Mountain West should add if the league sticks together & looks to expand. Dochterman’s rankings: 1) North Dakota State; 2) South Dakota State; 3a) Montana; 3b) Montana State; 5) UTEP; 6) New Mexico State; 7) Idaho; and, 8) Sacramento State. Three more to consider: North Dakota, South Dakota & Northern Arizona. (link)

Rutgers baseball will be the first tenant for a new 6,500-capacity ballpark that will be located on the campus of Middlesex College (NJCAA), and the town of Middlesex, N.J. The multipurpose outdoor stadium, designed by AECOM, will feature an artificial turf playing surface, accommodating a variety of sports (baseball, football, soccer, and lacrosse), and 3,500 fixed seats when it opens in 2026. Additionally, there will be multiple concession stands, indoor and outdoor bar spaces, and dedicated team and office space for tenants plus eight luxury boxes, two party decks and an interior party room. Standing room plus 1,500 deployable seats along one sideline for certain sports contribute to the overall 6,500 capacity. (link)

Oklahoma Softball HC Patty Gasso’s new contract has been approved by the OU Board of Regents. The new deal will average at least $2M per year through the 2028 season. AHC Jen Rocha and AHC JT Gasso also got pay bumps, each will now make $300K. Baseball HC Skip Johnson also saw his new deal approved - he’ll make an average of $1.28M through the 2029 season. The Board approved updates to the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium master plan, including the green light for Populous for the “further design and development of stadium projects consistent with the master plan updates.” The approved planning, programming and schematic design phase costs for $7M were approved. “I’ll look everybody in the face (and say) we’re wrong in college football to throw kids out of games. … I’ll just voice my opinion again that somebody needs to take a good hard look at this because I would imagine there’s a lot of coaches that feel the same way.” That’s Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell on targeting-related ejections as the Badgers will be without student-athlete Jake Chaney this week for the game against Alabama. NCAA National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw believes the threat of ejection has been an effective deterrent, as there were only 0.16 targeting penalties enforced per game last season, which represented a three-year low. Shaw: “Any time you can impact playing time, very similar to impacting finances in the NFL, it catches your attention. We can’t fine like the NFL does. So playing time is the most precious commodity that’s out there, and that’s what makes this penalty what it is.” Of note, There have been 37 targeting penalties enforced through this season’s first 178 FBS games for an average of 0.21/game. That’s a jump from last year’s season-ending average. But it’s almost exactly the same as the average through the first two weeks of last season, when 40 targeting penalties were enforced in 180 contests (0.22). (link)

South Carolina AD Ray Tanner will step aside and take a new role as AD Emeritus/Senior Advisor to the President. Tanner: “For a while now, I have thought there’s going to come a time for Carolina to get a new athletics director, and the president and I have had those conversations. There was interest for me to remain at the university. I agreed to stay in a new role because of my passion for this university, this city and this state.” Tanner will stay on as AD until his successor is found, and he will be paid his current annual salary of $1.175M through June 30, 2025, and then make $987,500 through June 30, 2026. The new contract calls for an $800K annual salary in its final two years. (link)

Attorneys for Florida State this week filed a motion arguing the Leon County court has heard enough to award the Seminoles a summary judgment in FSU’s ongoing legal dispute with the ACC. The filing declares that “millions of dollars in legal fees are needlessly being consumed by the perpetuation” of the ACC’s false narratives and that “postponing the resolution of this question only compounds the expense and travesty.” The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker attempts to unpack the filing and notes that it “wades into the weeds in a way only an English teacher would love — with an analysis of a principal clause versus a subordinate clause. Redactions make some of the arguments even harder to follow. Florida State’s motion also asks for summary judgment for counts related to breach of contract and the ACC’s exit fee. FSU argues the ACC has violated its constitution and rules multiple times, including by suing the school without a full vote. Florida State said the ACC’s withdrawal payment — about $140 million — is 3.2 times what FSU received last year from the ACC. Therefore, FSU calls it a ‘disproportional and unconscionable amount considering the ACC would suffer no contractual damage from FSU’s departure from the 18-team league.’” (link); Full filing. (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford met with trustees today and explained that FSU has sold 25,937 season football tickets, good for $16.71M in total revenue. That figure includes $10.26M from the lower bowl where the Seminoles had budgeted $10.5M. Five games are sold out. FSU sold over 10K tickets to the matchup with Georgia Tech in Ireland, generating $2.57M in revenue. (link); Alford also told the board that if FSU offered the maximum number of scholarships in all sports based on proposed House settlement, it would cost an extra $5M per year. At present, FSU spends about $9M in scholarships each year. (link); The Tampa Bay Times’ Matt Baker: “FSU trustees just had an interesting discussion on the House settlement, NIL et al. Chairperson Peter Collins said all the changing variables have been a reason why private equity/capital haven’t gotten into anything quite yet.” (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports that it became clear during the Pac-12 Media Day in Las Vegas this summer that a “complete Pac-12/Mountain West merger was not going to materialize, nor perhaps even a 2025 extension of the two leagues’ football scheduling agreement. The sides were too far apart, and the relationship was strained. The Pac-12 schools did not like how Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez was handling negotiations, standing firm in her league’s stance on the financial details of an agreement. Mountain West sources denied there was any collusion or mandate to box out Oregon State and Washington State from individually scheduling 2025 football games with Mountain West schools. Still, the Mountain West felt it held the leverage. … For a year, Oregon State and Washington State had made it public knowledge that they really did not want to join the Mountain West, which was not appreciated within that league when it was the Mountain West who provided a 2024 scheduling lifeline.” For the departing Mountain West schools, Vannini notes this was their “last best chance to end up on the right side of whatever the future is.” A source familiar with the schools’ thinking tells him: “This is about the next five years.” More. Local leaders in Sacramento have formed the “SAC 12” committee to promote Sacramento State’s Pac-12 candidacy, Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports. The committee points out that if added, Sacramento State would bring with it the league’s largest media market and State Senator Angelique Ashby (D-8) says: “The Hornets are not new to the scene. They’ve already shown their sustained ability to compete at the highest levels across multiple sports. The committee is on a mission to show the whole country what we here in Sacramento already know, that the Sac State Hornets are a force to be reckoned with on every field, court, pitch, track and course in the country. They are absolutely Pac-12 ready!” (link)

Oklahoma State Football HC Mike Gundy says he’s in favor of the House settlement because he believes it will help level the playing field when it comes to recruiting but notes: “The challenge…from what I can see in reading between the lines with this judge [Claudia Wilken], what she is talking about, and then I had a conversation last night with somebody, I don’t think they are going to sign this player revenue. I think they are a long ways off. So, if that happens then we’re in another year of what you would call ‘collective NIL,’ which is paying players, which we are not supposed to be doing. I think she is going the other way on this revenue-sharing, in my opinion.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “That’s the problem with trying to impose a salary cap without a CBA/union.” (link, link)

Braxton Whitehead of the WHL’s Regina Pats has committed to Arizona State despite NCAA eligibility rules that prevent any player who has appeared in a major junior hockey game from playing college hockey. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski notes this is the “first NCAA commitment for a Canadian Hockey League player since a proposed class action suit was filed against the NCAA and 10 universities in August claiming that the eligibility rules violate antitrust laws.” WHL Commissioner Dan Near: "Anyone who loves hockey and developmental leagues has been watching what's been happening in the NIL space and in the transfer portal space, trying to imagine if this will have implications on the future of how junior hockey players develop. I think this could be the first domino to fall in that regard." Whitehead, who grew up in Alaska and has always wanted to play college hockey, says the lawsuit “sparked my interest” and acknowledges that "I kind of hit the lottery with the timing of all that's going on right now. I think [the suit] gave me that extra step just to put myself out there and try something that's never been done before." (link)
