Oregon State AD Scott Barnes met with the media before yesterday’s Civil War kick with Oregon. Of note on Pac-12 dynamics: “In terms of who we add and how, what I'd say is there are no limitations. We'll go after the best. [...] We think it's anywhere between two — to meet that NCAA minimum — or four. [...] We've already started in earnest with our first meeting yesterday to look at the landscape. There is great interest in this very early stage. In terms of timing, I'd love for us to see this wrapped up as soon as possible. [...] We'll share terms of a deal (at a later date), but it's a long term grant of rights. Everybody is nice and buckled in and committed for the long term. [...] We talk a lot about brand and valuation, really important of course. But academic and athletic success is really critical in this process. We look at culture and geography to a degree. All those things combined give us a decision matrix if you will on how to move forward. [...] We wouldn't be able to share terms with you on the dollars, but I do want to say this. When you think about the foundational group we have now and the potential of who we may add, we feel great about going out to the marketplace and commanding a really good deal.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey: “Where the conversation really started to escalate was after the negotiations ended with the Mountain West and the Pac-12 in terms of the scheduling alliance.” (link)
|
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff yesterday morning: “Sources tell me that the Pac-12 has some interest in Tulane & Memphis. The rub with UNLV is they would have to probably take Nevada too since it's the same school board & that issue may make it a deterrent there.” (link)
|
JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports the Pac-12 is most likely looking at three additional members, not just two. Per a source: “That gives you eight conference games. In basketball, you could go a little bigger if an opportunity presents.” Canzano: “Could Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s become Pac-12 members in basketball only? Is there enough added value there for the Pac-12 to do that? [...] The Pac-12’s expansion also opens the door for the conference to negotiate a larger CFP distribution. I doubt the SEC/Big Ten will be eager to share more of the playoff pie, but Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould undoubtedly has more leverage. There’s a ‘look-in’ clause in the current deal that provides a window to renegotiate.” (link)

North Dakota State AD Matt Larsen on speculation surrounding a potential FBS move for the Bison: “I think we’ve made our intentions pretty clear. I think our fan base always wants us to do a plane-in-the-sky and for us to come out and do it that way. In my mind, that’s not the way things happen. We’ve made it very clear on where we want our institution to be and so we’ll take it from there. [...] If those things are played in the public and the media, that’s how those things usually get submarined. So I think the fact it was quiet until really two days ago just speaks to, one, the importance of it but also to get it over the finish line it’s something that has to be somewhat confidential.” (link)

Bloomberg’s Peter Robison & Noah Buhayar tell the story of Michigan State Football student-athletes seriously contemplating boycotting last year’s game at Iowa after receiving an email from MSU-affiliated collective Spartan Dawgs 4 Life discontinuing NIL payments for some players. “At the hotel, (Interim HC Harlan) Barnett told the players not to head up to their rooms so he could hold a meeting first, according to a person familiar with the situation who declined to be identified revealing team discussions. Barnett told them what the collective had done wasn’t right and he’d understand if they didn’t play—but he hoped they would, and he believed they would win. (Barnett declined to comment for this story.) Other coaches shuttled among the players, trying to calm them down, according to two people there who declined to be identified.” An unnamed former Big Ten assistant coach: “It happens a ton. I had to do that to a few kids, and it was like, ‘Hey, I can’t really do anything about it.’” Lots more, though most is ground already covered on macro issues that have reshaped the industry. (link)

On3’s Nick De La Torre reports Florida has called a Board of Trustees meeting for this morning. USA Today’s Matt Hayes also says “A group of Florida boosters have pulled together money to cover the expense of firing coach Billy Napier.” $26M is the number. No indication on the timing of such a move. (link, link)

An outbreak of whooping cough among Portland State football players led team doctors to call off the Vikings’ game against South Dakota yesterday. The PSU statement, in part: “It should be noted that no players on the Viking team are seriously ill at this time. Information on ticketing and refunds will be announced at a later date.” (link)

According to an agreement released by the Division I Committee on Infractions, South Carolina State failed to monitor student-athlete eligibility during the 2021-22 academic year, resulting in four student-athletes in three sports competing while ineligible. The school also agreed that it failed to maintain squad lists for 14 sports over two academic years. In an unrelated violation, former men's basketball AC Marcus Sikes failed to cooperate with an investigation into possible recruiting inducements in the MBB program. The school and the enforcement staff agreed that the eligibility violations in this case occurred after an extensive ransomware attack that affected the school's information technology and automated processes. Penalties: one-year probation, $10K in fines, 2.5% reduction in football, women’s basketball and women’s soccer scholarships during the 2024-25 academic year, the vacation of all records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible and a three-year show-cause for Sikes. DirecTV and Disney have reached an agreement in principle. Front Office Sports’ Eric Fisher: “After continued negotiations between DirecTV and Disney, the sides achieved a breakthrough that gives the distributor the flexibility it sought to offer consumers genre-specific programming bundles, including in sports, while providing Disney some fee increases for carriage of its channels.” Key terms, per Fisher: An ability for DirecTV to offer consumers multiple genre-specific “skinny bundles,” including in sports; A packaging of DirecTV subscriptions with Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming services, including ESPN+; Rights for DirecTV to offer its customers ESPN’s forthcoming flagship streaming service at no additional cost.; Continued carriage for Disney channels on DirecTV at “market-based terms.” (link)

On College GameDay yesterday, one of the featured stories was the history of the song Sandstorm getting to the South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium speakers. Former Gamecocks’ Deputy AD for External Affairs/current WMT Senior Director of Innovation Eric Nichols recalls: “When you’re producing a game from that position, you’re trying to give your team the best chance to win. We had a list of what we called ‘hot songs’, that you played when there was a momentum shift in the game, and Sandstorm was one of them.” The “birth” of the tradition happened in 2009 when then-fourth-ranked Ole Miss was trying to win it at the end. After a stop by the Gamecocks defense on second down, Sandstorm was played, then played again after the stop on third down and South Carolina held on for the win and a new go-to song. Current Gamecocks’ Football HC Shane Beamer was an AC in Columbia at the time Sandstorm became the tradition. He admits that when he was at Oklahoma as an AC a few years ago, and he was going for the SC job, his wife and kids would play Sandstorm in the kitchen when he would walk in. Last year the school brought Darude, the Finnish DJ who made the song, to a home game to play it for the crowd. More. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini checks in with NCAA Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw regarding the debate about whether the break at the end of the second and fourth quarters should be called a “two-minute timeout” or a “two-minute warning.” Shaw: “We’re not warning anybody of anything, so we’re going to adopt those words. … Our TV partners have been pretty good about recognizing the name is a little different than the NFL. There’s been jokes here and there, but I think it describes what it really is. It’s that timeout. … We’re not warning anybody. Everybody knows the time. We just named it that. We didn’t think that would be a big thing and that anybody would talk about it. But it’s been funny. If it’s brought more attention to it, I don’t know. But I think we’re settled in on the language and everybody gets it.” (link)

UFC CEO Dana White talked about the company’s Noche live event from The Sphere and says: “There's a movie that's going to run in the Sphere. There are chapters to this movie. So before each fight is a movie, and you will be focused on the Sphere and the screen. Then the fighters will walk out...then the fight is the star of the show. When that's over, there will be another movie, then a fight. … This movie that I'm talking about and these chapters tell the history of combat sports in Mexico, the history of the Mexican people, their traditions.” Sportico’s Jacob Feldman asks whether any images of the event could come out ahead of time, and White says: “Lenee [Breckenridge], my head of PR…never hears the word ‘no’ from me, ever. She gets what she wants all the time. She’s been torturing me to put out images of the event. I won’t do it. I will not put out one image of this event. … There are six different movies that will air that night, and not one image will come out before the event.” White adds: “If this goes the way I hope it goes, I’d love to repackage this thing and have it run all year at the Sphere, where people could come into town and go experience it.” White also confirms there will be haptic motors in the seats so they rumble in sync with the action. “This event is such a game-changer, this is where entertainment and sports truly come together. I think people who are building arenas from here on out or redoing their arenas start looking at stuff like this. … The Super Bowl rolls in these unbelievable concerts. The NBA and all these other sports leagues—and the arenas—are going to start stepping up and changing what the halftime, and the rest of their entertainment other than just the game, looks like.” (link, link); Here’s a quick look at the vibe inside The Sphere last night. @1QLeadership Question: Can the processes learned throughout your career lay the foundation for entrepreneurial pursuits?
Dr. Jason Penry, Founder of Penry Advisors, spent years working in fundraising in college athletics and on campus in general. Not long ago, he decided to start a business based on the concepts he learned during his career raising money.
• "involvement precedes investment, almost always"
• relationships work across all industries
• doing things for the greater good makes it easier to put in the time
• never promise something you can't deliver
Before branching out on his own, Penry used the same concepts to help start a medical school in the state of Arkansas. He also notes that the pace of athletics fundraising is far more urgent, in terms of immediate use, than academic fundraising. 🎧 on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

CollegeAD reports details of FAU AD Brian White’s recent contract extension: The term is through 2029, but it’s a rolling five-year deal that includes a base pay increased from $500K to $725K. There’s also a 3% annual escalator & a 10% annual retention bonus. Performance bonuses max out at 20% of base pay. Notably, if White were to exit during the first year of the deal he’d owe $725K, an amount that decreases in subsequent years of the agreement to $675K, $625K, $575K & $525K. (link)

South Carolina President Michael Amiridis says he’s looking for “record over promise” in the next leader of the Gamecocks. More: “I want somebody who is experienced. He is, or she is, in this position, and there is a strong framework.” Will outgoing AD Ray Tanner be involved in the selection of his successor? Tanner: “I will not be directly involved in that capacity. Should I be able to provide some background, I will certainly do that. But I don’t anticipate being involved in (choosing) the replacement.” (link)

Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel has not talked to the media yet about characteristics or experiences she’ll value in the hire of a new AD, but longtime hoops journalist Mike DeCourcy, who is from the Steel City, warns: “There’s the possibility of getting this really wrong. Every change isn’t an improvement. [...] You have to have familiarity with the terrain. If you don’t, it’s going to be very hard to be successful. [...] The future of the ACC is essential to Pitt’s athletic future. The new athletic director absolutely has to be committed to that.” Panthers donor Gavin Williams also chimes in: “You’re in an urban area where the people who have deep pockets, they’re not all Pitt people. And if they are Pitt people, they’re not solely Pitt people. [Pitt] has kinda been a second-tier player, and I think NIL has made it worse. People seem to think there’s this untapped potential for Pitt to do huge things in fundraising because it’s Pittsburgh, but I’ve been hearing that for 35 years. I see no evidence of that. [...] One thing I loved about Heather was her ambition. She didn’t accept, ‘This is Pitt. This is the way things are.’ She made some real ambitious changes. Did those get her into trouble? Maybe. But I don’t want someone who accepts the realities. I want somebody who tries to go beyond that.” (link)

Wyoming AD Tom Burman points to the importance of the remaining eight Mountain West programs sticking together: “If (these) eight can stay together and we can add some teams, we can really be a good league. There is some exposure obviously. The Pac-12 has six members today, so they need to add two (more). You've got to have eight per the NCAA. So, they're going to add two more and it appears they're looking to the Southeast part of the country for (an) additional two or possibly four. If they fail, it's likely they're going to circle back to the Mountain West, and we could lose an additional member or two members. So that's why expansion is very, very important.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports that “multiple industry professionals told me yesterday that the chances of Cal and Stanford leaving the ACC to re-join the Pac-12 are close to zero percent. For one, as plenty of other national reporters have noted, both schools signed the Grant of Rights agreement with the ACC, binding themselves to the league for the next several years.” Even if the GOR is struck down in court, Brown is told the two schools “would not be considered likely expansion candidates. After all, Cal and Stanford decided to join the ACC specifically in part to avoid conference affiliation with the Boise States and Fresno States of the world. The current six-team Pac-12 is not a great cultural or competitive fit for the Cal and Stanford Olympic sports programs. I understand the geographic reasons why commentators and fans would point to a potential reunion…but I wouldn’t bet on it.” Big Sky schools are also likely to stay put, as Brown points out the “costs to move from the Big Sky to either the MWC or Pac-12, I’m told, would represent an annual ‘eight-figure commitment,’ not to mention the new $5M reclassification fee due to the NCAA. While a reclassification would increase media rights revenues, as well as earning from guarantee games, there was little confidence from anybody that I’ve spoken to, or anything I’ve read, to suggest that FCS teams from that league would be interested in making a jump right now.” More from Brown, including at least three institutions who have hired consulting firms to help “prepare themselves” for a potential conference move. (link)

A Mountain West source to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander: “You've gotta be excited, because the alternative is being one of those teams being left behind. Whether it's the perfect move for us or not, it doesn't matter. The alternative is you're the Summit League or the old WAC.” Norlander continues, says there should be only one objective - from a hoops standpoint - for the Pac-12: “GO GET GONZAGA. [...] There is no school that would create more positive feedback, bigger headlines and bring a bigger reputation boost to the reborn Pac-12 moving forward than the Zags. Gonzaga has such national cachet, it would instantly be the flagship basketball entity in this league.” An unnamed West Coast Conference source on the options for the Zags given an unknown future of how the industry will operate: “It's risky.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman dives into who the Mountain West should add if the league sticks together & looks to expand. Dochterman’s rankings: 1) North Dakota State; 2) South Dakota State; 3a) Montana; 3b) Montana State; 5) UTEP; 6) New Mexico State; 7) Idaho; and, 8) Sacramento State. Three more to consider: North Dakota, South Dakota & Northern Arizona. (link)

Rutgers baseball will be the first tenant for a new 6,500-capacity ballpark that will be located on the campus of Middlesex College (NJCAA), and the town of Middlesex, N.J. The multipurpose outdoor stadium, designed by AECOM, will feature an artificial turf playing surface, accommodating a variety of sports (baseball, football, soccer, and lacrosse), and 3,500 fixed seats when it opens in 2026. Additionally, there will be multiple concession stands, indoor and outdoor bar spaces, and dedicated team and office space for tenants plus eight luxury boxes, two party decks and an interior party room. Standing room plus 1,500 deployable seats along one sideline for certain sports contribute to the overall 6,500 capacity. (link)

Oklahoma Softball HC Patty Gasso’s new contract has been approved by the OU Board of Regents. The new deal will average at least $2M per year through the 2028 season. AHC Jen Rocha and AHC JT Gasso also got pay bumps, each will now make $300K. Baseball HC Skip Johnson also saw his new deal approved - he’ll make an average of $1.28M through the 2029 season. The Board approved updates to the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium master plan, including the green light for Populous for the “further design and development of stadium projects consistent with the master plan updates.” The approved planning, programming and schematic design phase costs for $7M were approved. “I’ll look everybody in the face (and say) we’re wrong in college football to throw kids out of games. … I’ll just voice my opinion again that somebody needs to take a good hard look at this because I would imagine there’s a lot of coaches that feel the same way.” That’s Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell on targeting-related ejections as the Badgers will be without student-athlete Jake Chaney this week for the game against Alabama. NCAA National Coordinator of Officials Steve Shaw believes the threat of ejection has been an effective deterrent, as there were only 0.16 targeting penalties enforced per game last season, which represented a three-year low. Shaw: “Any time you can impact playing time, very similar to impacting finances in the NFL, it catches your attention. We can’t fine like the NFL does. So playing time is the most precious commodity that’s out there, and that’s what makes this penalty what it is.” Of note, There have been 37 targeting penalties enforced through this season’s first 178 FBS games for an average of 0.21/game. That’s a jump from last year’s season-ending average. But it’s almost exactly the same as the average through the first two weeks of last season, when 40 targeting penalties were enforced in 180 contests (0.22). (link)
