American Athletic Conference Commissioner Tim Pernetti released a statement last night: “The American Conference is a pioneering brand, firmly grounded in grit and hard work, with powerful and prestigious member institutions. In the past five months, we have prioritized seizing every opportunity that enhances value for our member institutions and student-athletes. Whether through private capital, naming rights, innovative partnerships, or realignment, we have proactively assessed each opportunity, and are prepared to collaboratively take action-steps, to be at the forefront of success and sustainability.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes the Pac-12’s plan to add Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State is over a year old. In the spring of 2023, former Commissioner George Kliavkoff was presented with a “backup option in the event Oregon and Washington left for the Big Ten and the Four Corners schools bolted to the Big 12. … Invite the top football schools from the Mountain West, pair them with [Washington State] and [Oregon State], then convince Cal and Stanford to stay put. By remaining in the Pac-12, the Bears and Cardinal would have had a vastly easier path into the College Football Playoff than in the ACC (or anywhere else). Also, arrangements would have been made for them to receive disproportionately large shares of conference revenues. Their presence, in theory, would have allowed the restructured conference to secure a media rights deal that paid each of the Bay Area schools more than they will receive for the first seven years of their term in the ACC ($11M each, approximately). With the Cardinal and Bears as anchors, plus WSU, OSU and the four Mountain West programs, the eight-team conference could have then grabbed SMU and at least one more school in valuable media markets in the Central Time Zone. But Kliavkoff never considered it…nor did he request a fully formed proposal.” Wilner also notes UNLV’s tie to Nevada wasn’t the only reason the Rebels weren’t considered for expansion. “The desire to maintain maximum optionality and explore schools in the eastern half of the country was also a factor.” (link)

Freshly minted Missouri State AD Patrick Ransdell sees the potential at MSU but cautions that progress will take time. "Everyone wants to go really fast. And so do I, but I want to do things the right way and not do things that we'd have to adjust in year two or year three. We need to sit down, figure out the next five years and put the plans in place. I don't want to rush. I want to be deliberate and move quickly but I just don't want to rush." Ransdell will be involved with the university’s overall strategic plan for 2025-30 and says the athletics piece will include facility upgrades, staffing, budget increases and integrating a culture of success and teamwork. "At some point, we're going to want to take a look at doing a capital campaign. We also need to adjust the Bears Fund. Our annual fund needs to get more robust and a lot of that is going to lean back on staffing. The more you do this, the more people you need out asking for money and hitting the road. A lot of those revenue-producing positions, you can show a good return on investment and from a business perspective, that makes a lot of sense…. From a revenue standpoint, we're going to start moving quickly. We're going to fundraise. We'll need to adjust what 2025 football season tickets look like. There are going to be a lot of adjustments moving forward and I hope everybody would expect and understand that when you go from one level to another, it's going to mean some different things." San Diego State’s move to the Pac-12 comes with additional basketball benefits, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, who notes that “as things stand now, only one of the six Pac-12 members – Colorado State at 5,025 feet – has elevation that is considered problematic. The other five Mountain West altitude schools, so far, have been left behind.” Aztecs AD John David Wicker adds: “Football drives the bus as you think about revenue generation, TV, all that stuff. But our men’s basketball program has been as successful as almost anybody in the country over the past 10, 15 years. It was important to make sure they were in a place where they can continually succeed. I think basketball will trade up a little bit.” Asked whether he’ll lobby Gonzaga Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few to join the Pac-12, SDSU HC Brian Dutcher says: “Mark Few is very smart. He’s going to do what’s in the best interest of Gonzaga University. If he looks at this situation and he likes the other pieces we’re adding and he feels that it’s the best situation for Gonzaga to be in, then they’ll make the move. But I know this. Two of the best programs on the West Coast are San Diego State and Gonzaga. If we get in the same league together, it’s going to be a hard league.” Zeigler notes it already is: “The average annual ranking in the Kenpom metric over the last five seasons for a Mountain West team is 120. For the six comprising the new Pac-12: 87.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney examines how the Pac-12’s addition of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State will impact men’s basketball and observes: “Washington State and Oregon State have long been college hoops also-rans. In the last 15 years, the schools have combined for three NCAA Tournament appearances and seven 20-loss seasons. And life seems likely to only get harder for them basketball-wise as the belt tightens financially and the schools’ two relatively successful football teams fight to keep up in the arms race. Meanwhile, Fresno State was among the least-funded basketball programs in the Mountain West and is paying new coach Vance Walberg a paltry $600K annually. San Diego State, Boise State and Colorado State all have excellent coaches and good institutional support, but building teams consistently competing for at-large bids likely just got harder, not easier.” The Mountain West, Sweeney continues, will likely look to add teams from Conference USA or the FCS. As such, he notes that “UNLV, Utah State, New Mexico and Nevada are all very good programs, but their margins for error just got even slimmer without the league’s March standard-bearer in San Diego State. … The best-case scenario for West Coast college basketball? The Pac-12 ends up circling back to the Mountain West, adds a few more of the league’s more consistent programs and ends up settling as a basketball league not much worse than the Mountain West.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek notes that Ole Miss has 5K members in its collective compared to Arkansas’ 1K and says: “If we're going to catch up, I’ll make it so easy for you – if we could get 10,000 households across the state of Arkansas to give $100 a month…we would be in the NIL game from a football perspective. It’s that simple, but we can't say the Tysons, the Waltons…’Hey, they'll take care of it.’ Because they're not. They’re not. They are so incredibly generous and they've done so much for our program, but if we're really going to get a handle on this NIL and remain competitive, we need to rally people across the state and we’ve really got to take some pride in the Razorbacks.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter reacts: “Arkansas’ AD asking donors for NIL money to increase the football payroll. At the same time the NCAA’s attorney is telling a federal judge that ‘pay for play’ is prohibited. Explains why Judge Wilken didn’t buy it.” (link)

UConn police arrested Robert Cole Parmalee on Friday and the Oregon resident is being charged with breach of peace, electronic stalking and harassment and held on a $100K bond. His charges include the stalking and harassment of Huskies Women’s Basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers. This is not his first arrest in the state of Connecticut, as state police apprehended him in August when he was found walking along a limited-access highway near the Bradley International Airport and told officers he was going to see Bueckers. Virginia Tech worked with Learfield Amplify to install mesh chairbacks on 32K Lane Stadium seats, generating a $2.3M increase in season-ticket revenue, and Hokies Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs and Advancement Brad Wurthman tells SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “This is a way we felt like we could provide an improved fan experience without having to dig out a whole side of our stadium.” McCormick notes that season-ticket prices for fans with chairbacks increased between $325 and $540 for the season while the total expense of deploying the chairbacks was around $1M as part of a seven-year contract with Learfield. Fox’s Kansas State-Arizona football broadcast averaged 2.58M viewers on Friday night, up 15% versus the season average for the departing WWE Friday Night SmackDown, according to Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, who adds: “Fox’s inaugural Friday night college football production served up 330K more viewers than SmackDown averaged in its 49-episode fifth season on the broadcast network, and was up 46% versus the Sept. 6 finale (1.77M viewers). … Fox made short work of the rest of the broadcast field on an otherwise sleepy late-summer Friday evening, beating out its next-closest network competitor, CBS’ Let’s Make a Deal, by 140% in the [18-49] demo.” Crupi also notes that “if the new package continues to put up numbers, Fox will look to leverage its TGIF audiences to help further build its Big East basketball deliveries in the spring, which in turn will give way to its Friday night UFL slate. In effect, Fox will now have a live-sports mechanism in place from September through May of each year.” (link)

More from U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) on the SAFE Bet Act he recently co-sponsored: "The blunt, simple truth is, this industry targets losers. It does it methodically and scientifically, using algorithms to track who's betting, what they're betting on, whether they're winning or losing, what kind of promotions, credits, ads, bonuses to drive at them and make them more likely to lose." The bill would prohibit the use of AI to track users' gambling preferences, ban prop bets on college and amateur sports and create a national self-exclusion list, through which bettors with gambling addictions could voluntarily bar themselves placing wagers. Blumenthal: "It's fine to gamble, but the industry should be barred from exploiting and abusing people." (link)

Attorneys on both sides of the House settlement are preparing to file briefs with the court as soon as this week, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. In response to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken’s concerns about third-party compensation for student-athletes, plaintiffs’ attorney Jeffrey Kessler says: “I think it was actually more of a lack of clarity. We expect to address those questions and we don’t expect it to be a problem for the judge to approve [the settlement] the next time we go back.” Dellenger notes that language “relating to third-party endorsement (NIL) deals is expected to only be ‘clarified’ and not amended or changed in a significant way. … Any significant change to language regulating third-party pay is described as a ‘non-starter’ and would likely lead many within the industry to choose trial as an alternative.” Kessler says attorneys for both sides have met in recent days and believes “all of those issues can be worked out.” (link)

Providence AD Steve Napolillo tells the Boston Globe’s Dan McGowan that Connecticut-Big 12 discussions are “going to be a daily story. The Big East is a great conference. It is with them, it was without them, and it will be without them again” if they were to leave. Napolillo adds that, like all conferences, the Big East is “100% looking over our backs” as the realignment wheels continue to turn. “It’s really an arms race. We’re just making sure we have our pulse on things.” (link)

The Missouri Valley Conference saw 86 men’s basketball student-athletes enter the transfer portal this offseason, including 12 of the 16 players voted to the MVC's three all-conference teams. Commissioner Jeff Jackson acknowledges the league’s egress but notes: “I remember two years ago, we were ranked 15th as a conference. After all those (players) departed, and our teams went out and replenished, we ended up ranked ninth or tenth last season. … I think there's a lot of different ways institutions can find to be successful." Bradley HC Brian Wardle also offers an optimistic perspective: "I view this as an opportunity to raise our players up to a higher level. So we have to see where all this goes. It's still changing. But we will be able to do some things, continue to have good basketball, good players. Our program will do everything it can to compete and succeed." Jackson says the league is lucky to have Wardle, who’s been a successful team-builder, even in the new environment. “I'm not sure it's whether you keep a certain student-athlete. What matters is if you have the ability to recruit and to replenish and then have the ability that is necessary as a coaching staff and administrative support and academic support…to create the type of experience where your institution can continue being relevant. … One of the things were all trying to figure out how to manage better is NIL, true NIL, and that's the setting which gets dangerously close to crossing the line of being pay-for-play, which is not an environment I think our institutions want to be in. I don't favor pay-for-play. I do not see us getting into a world where student-athletes become employees." (link)

Portland State has released a statement concerning the cancellation of last weekend’s football game against South Dakota and explains that the whooping cough “diagnosis for the one individual was confirmed Thursday evening, with several additional PSU players exhibiting symptoms of upper respiratory illness, though they had not yet been officially diagnosed at the time of the game. Multiple players were in close contact with the infected individual. … As a precaution, all PSU players who may have been exposed to the illness have begun a five-day course of antibiotics, under the guidance of our OHSU medical professionals. These measures are expected to be completed in time for the team's next scheduled game at Boise State on September 21. Only athletes and staff who have completed the antibiotic regimen will be eligible to travel and participate in the upcoming game.” Full statement. (link)
|
Meanwhile, South Dakota AD Jon Schemmel writes on X: “Respect PSU’s decision, but it was theirs & theirs alone (not mutual). We (USD) clearly stated ‘We are playing’ to PSU, MVFC, & Big Sky – only after that statement was made did PSU inform us they were not playing. We were not made aware of the situation at PSU until after we landed in Portland Friday afternoon, PSU knew Thursday evening/night. PSU repeatedly said they were intending to play. At no point did we (USD) indicate we were not playing. … Our university leaders were all involved & supportive of our plan to play (very grateful for them). We planned to communicate everything to players before we left the hotel for the game. There are several unresolved issues pertaining to this game.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown provides more details on former Colorado Football AC Trevor Reilly’s outreach to Saudi Arabia, including the pitch deck he sent to VisitSaudi.com, which Brown notes is “full of 5430 Foundation branding.” The proposal highlights several social accounts tied to CU, the majority of which are of individuals relating to HC Deion Sanders. The deck explained how the 5430 Foundation collective “sought to fit in with brands and partners, proclaiming that ‘We Are A Hub’ that ‘connects you to Prime & athletes and them to you,’ as well as explaining the concept of NIL deals.” Additionally, the deck “highlighted the growth of these main accounts, along with the success that other brands have had in partnering with [standout student-athlete] Travis Hunter and various Sanders family members. It then appears to ask for $10M dollars.” Brown goes on to note that it’s “unclear if the figures in this specific deck were created for a PIF-centric campaign, or are part of a default media kit. My reading of the documents is that Reilly envisioned a world where the PIF would give X amount of money (perhaps $10M) in exchange for various Colorado and Sanders Family accounts promoting Saudi Arabia.” As for why this responsibility fell to Reilly, Brown notes it’s unusual for ACs to unilaterally engage in such an endeavor, and if NIL outreach was part of his responsibilities, then “why wasn’t he simply named to an NIL or staff development role?” More. Michigan appears to have agreed not to part ways with Football HC Sherrone Moore for cause based on its current knowledge of Moore’s involvement in the alleged sign-stealing scandal, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Tony Garcia, who report that Moore’s recently finalized contract states he can be suspended without pay or fired for cause “if the University determines that the Head Coach has been involved in a violation of the Governing Rules, whether prior to or after the Effective Date of this Agreement.” The contract goes on to state that “notwithstanding the foregoing, a violation of the Governing Rules which occurred prior to the Effective Date, to the extent the University had actual knowledge of the facts or alleged facts that are the basis for the violation prior to the execution of this Agreement by all parties, shall not be deemed a basis for termination with cause.” Financial details remain as they were spelled out on the MOU under which Moore had been working. The deal is set to run through Jan. 31, 2029, and Moore's basic compensation for this season is $6M, including the annual $500K retention payment Moore would receive if he is Michigan's head coach through January 31, the day of each contract year. Auburn is generating new revenue streams after “creating new premium options and modernizing Jordan-Hare Stadium’s food and beverage service this past offseason, following multiple successful trials in 2023,” according to SBJ’s Bret McCormick, who notes that last year, “5.7% of Jordan-Hare Stadium’s capacity was premium seating, well below the SEC average of 10.2%. There also was a premium waitlist of nearly 1,000 accounts (equivalent to more than 4,000 individual seats), meaning Auburn had plenty of impetus to create new premium spaces. That manifested in six new permanent field-level suites that sold out for the 2024 season in weeks. An area behind the Tigers’ bench was converted into an on-field space accessible as a purchasable add-on for any ticketholder, while a 1940s era storage space was renovated and turned into the new Locker Room Club (designed by Goodwyn Mills Cawood).” The projects cost $1.5M collectively, and Tigers Deputy AD for External Affairs Rhett Hobart expects they will be paid off in two seasons and begin bringing in $1M annually. Meanwhile, Auburn spent $2.8M modernizing its F&B setup and rolled out stadium-wide alcohol sales this fall, and McCormick reports that in the Tigers’ season opener, overall transactions increased by more than 10K, a 25% increase YoY. In the second game, transactions went up by 9K from the first game, topping 59K (Auburn averaged 43K per game last year). Some stands saw 30% increases in sales.” (link)

Wisconsin Men’s Basketball HC Greg Gard acknowledges that the NIL world is “like any business. You have a budget, you have expenses, you have revenue, (you) have to fundraise. It's market-driven." However, Gard does advocate for more structure, pointing out that “there isn't transparency with this. We don't know if somebody's really getting seven figures at another school. We have the same access that you have, what you see. You just have to choose whether you believe it or not. … Until we get to the point where we have some contracts and we have a regulatory body around it as we walk through this, we're all on our own." Gard adds: "The navigation piece of that has been probably the most challenging, and knowing that we're in a very competitive market, and you have to be very competitive with it. So it adds an extra layer of responsibility and challenges." (link)

Montana women’s soccer student-athletes Taij’a Anderson and Riley Carolan have entered into NIL agreements with the political activism group Montana Together to endorse incumbent U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D). NIL Daily’s Noah Henderson notes student-athletes were offered NIL deals ranging from $400-$2,400, depending on services provided, to produce scripted or unscripted social media videos supporting Tester and his policies. Tester previously stated he was unaware of the Montana Together’s NIL program. (link)

The Maverick Line Change Collective puts a very important tool in our coach's toolbox, as they navigate the best path to student-athlete recruitment and retention." (link)
