+ LSU won its first National Championship in a sizzling shooting display as Bayou Bengals HC Mulkey notched her fourth: “I think back to my press conference when Scott Woodward introduced me as LSU's coach. And the number of people that were in that PMAC, the Governor, the politicians, the people who watched me grow up. And I made a statement and asked everybody to turn around and look at those Final Four banners. Nowhere on there did it say ‘national champions,’ and that's what I came home to do. So I'm relieved because I don't have to think about that anymore. To see after the ballgame, the former LSU players, Seimone Augustus crying, and seeing all those people that really were a part of those Final Fours but just couldn't get over the hump. In the second of a three-part retrospective of his 25 years in Norman, Oklahoma AD Castiglione tells Tulsa World’s Haisten what it was like to inherit a department $15M in debt to its university. “It was awkward and uncomfortable to keep trying to explain something that I couldn’t explain — something that happened before I got here. That first year, there were times when I would start a conversation by saying, ‘You are not going to believe this.’ The ($15M) deficit was a big surprise.” Haisten turns his focus to Castiglione’s relationship with former Sooners FB HC Stoops, asked whether he felt more pressure to reignite the program with Stoops or sustain once it had been reignited, Castiglione says: “We felt a greater responsibility (to sustain it) — I would put it that way. … I remember over those 18 years that Bob and I worked together, we would deal with the challenges of the moment — whatever those were. We always tried to keep our eyes forward, on positioning the program for success. We never envisioned the (college athletics) world changing as dramatically as it is now.” (link)

Count Connecticut MBB HC Hurley among those against expanding the NCAA Tournament. “I think it’s a privilege to play in this tournament, not a right.” Hurley contends some power conference teams will “game the numbers” and would prefer not to see mid-majors get squeezed. “For me, I think it’s great the way it is. I feel like devaluing the regular season, I think, potentially hurts the regular season and what it means.” (link)

Members of Arizona State’s Final Four Organizing Committee are visiting NRG Stadium this weekend as the Sun Devils prepare to host next year’s MBB Final Four, and Committee Co-Chair Johnson says: “It’s all about making sure that we’re up to date. We want to make sure that we have the best event possible for the student athletes, the fans, the alumni, everybody who’s going to be in Arizona.” Sun Devils Assoc. AD for Operations and Facilities Loudabarger estimates 25-30 people from ASU will be directly involved in the event, and Senior Assoc. AD for Media Relations Tammaro says he’ll employ 40 to 50 volunteers, including 15 to 20 students from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, to gather quotes and distribute them to the media. Tammaro: “It’s sports information stuff that you do normally, but it’s at the highest level. Nobody realizes how many people it takes to pull something like this off.” (link)

Despite the Colorado-PointsBet relationship hitting the skids, Maryland’s relationship with the mobile sportsbook operator continues, according to a PointsBet representative. That said, Maryland Senator Hettleman is sponsoring a bill she says was inspired by the situation in Colorado. SB 620, which prohibits in-state colleges and universities from forming partnerships with sportsbook operators that include promotional sign-up incentives, has passed through the Senate and the House Ways and Means Committee and could become law ahead of the upcoming April 10 adjournment of the state’s legislature. Endeavor is finalizing a deal to acquire WWE, according to CNBC’s Sherman, who reports the “UFC and WWE are expected to form a new publicly traded company as part of the agreement” and adds: “Endeavor is slated to own 51% of the new combat sports and entertainment company, while WWE shareholders would get 49%. The Endeavor deal gives WWE an enterprise value of $9.3B.” Endeavor CEO Emanuel is expected to act as CEO of the new company, while WWE owner McMahon is expected to serve as Executive Chairman. Additionally, WWE CEO Khan will serve as president of the wrestling business. Sherman adds that shares of WWE are up more than 33% so far this year, giving it a market value of more than $6.79B. The Iowa vs. South Carolina matchup drew 5.5M viewers and peaked at 6.6M, while the LSU vs. Virginia Tech tip brought in 3.4M viewers and peaked at 5M. With an average of 4.5M viewers, these were the most-viewed college basketball games - men’s or women’s - ever on the ESPN family of networks. (link)

On how her life and career path has revolved around sports, Rempe: “Any limits for me were ones I created by choices I made. I don't feel like there were things put in front of me that I couldn't get over. But that also comes from being in sports. I really think it all comes back to sports. I was a walk-on. I was always the hardest worker or I go back to different accolades I got, and it's pretty funny, but it all comes back to kind of having that blue-collar mentality, which I also think that's the University of Nevada. “Alan Haller wasn’t wearing a fake mustache or Groucho Marx glasses when he showed up Monday night to watch Bowling Green’s women’s basketball team host Florida in the WNIT quarterfinals. But Michigan State’s athletic director was in relative disguise, wearing all black, sitting near the top row of the Stroh Center, an everyman taking in a game, chatting up unsuspecting fans about the Falcons and their head coach, Robyn Fralick.” That is the Lansing State Journal’s Couch with an inside look on how Spartans AD Haller landed new WBB HC Fralick. The Michigan-native signed a six-year deal, worth $900K annually, about which Haller explains: “Not that she was looking for money. But that's where women's basketball salaries are going for the top programs. And I wasn't going to pinch pennies to get someone that I thought could help lead us here for years to come. Miami (FL) MBB Larranaga commented on what he sees as a nonsensical recruiting calendar, which currently makes it harder for programs that advance in March to also be attentive & effective in building next year’s roster: “Yeah, how about that? The more you win, the less you are able to recruit. That doesn’t really make sense, but it’s true.” San Diego State’s Dutcher offers: “While we’re sitting here getting ready for the greatest event in the world, there are coaches doing home visits and recruiting for next year’s team. So as focused as I am now, I’ve also got one eye on the future. If you don’t do that, you shouldn’t be coaching.” (link)

Indiana State MBB HC Schertz joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss translating success from the DII to DI level. Schertz, who previously led the Lincoln Memorial (DII) program to consistent national success, advises DI ADs: “Every situation is unique, anytime you recruit someone or hire someone there is a risk involved, but I think the risk is much less when you look at somebody’s track record and success at the small college level - is how they are running their program translatable to what it is going to look like at the Division I level?” Schertz advises fellow coaches looking to make the jump: “If I made any mistakes it was operating under the assumption that people understood that coaching is coaching. There’s great coaches at all levels of basketball. The thought that there’s a monopoly on great coaches in Division I is really to me kind of remarkable.” Full convo on Connect. (link)

The New York Times’ Tumin and Rhim wonder what is next for the high-profile stars in college women’s basketball. With only 144 spots on WNBA rosters, and only 36 players drafted each year, the pair suggests that the deepened talent pool of collegiate players will create an issue. For reference, only 17 players drafted last year made it to a team’s opening day roster in the WNBA. UCLA WBB HC Close offers: “We have all these people growing and mastering their craft, with no place to go in the United States. It’s just really sad that those are the conversations we’re having to have with our league and our college game being so healthy and vibrant and growing.” (link)

Hail! Impact Founder Weerappuli shares the collective’s origin story, which began with a shot-in-the-dark email to a random address Weerappuli hoped belonged to Michigan FB HC Harbaugh. Weerappuli had intended to invite Harbaugh to his graduation ceremony from the Ross School of Business but was surprised to receive a reply from Harbaugh’s father, who offered to attend in his son’s place. That meeting led to a meeting with the Wolverines HC, which led to Weerappuli volunteering to use his connections in the Ross School to expand NIL opportunities for Wolverines FB student-athletes. The collective hopes to raise $5M to fund annual stipends for the Michigan FB team, with intentions of expanding to other sports if funding targets are met. Moreover, The Athletic’s Meek notes that Weerappuli describes the optimal NIL approach as the “golden triangle,” which includes a for-profit marketing agency, an LLC collective and a nonprofit foundation. U-M has the first two through Valiant and Champions Circle. Weerappuli sees Hail! Impact as the third part of the triangle, catering to donors who don’t have a commercial interest in NIL but value the community impact and the tax write-off they get from donating to a charitable foundation.
