Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger contends Memphis is the fulcrum upon which conference realignment will now pivot, noting the Tigers don’t have a “formal invitation into the Pac-12, but that’s likely only because [they haven’t] accepted a (forthcoming) invitation. The oft-used motto during the coaching cycle applies here: A job cannot be offered if it isn’t accepted.” Should the Tigers accept the Pac-12’s invitation, it could create a “cascading exit that would leave a gaping hole in the AAC. South Florida and Tulane are unlikely to leave without Memphis. And Memphis might not leave without them. This is a packaged deal or no deal at all.” One person involved in the negotiations tells Dellenger: “They may not want to go, but they don’t want the other guy to go without them.” According to people who have seen the Pac-12’s presentation, the league is projecting a per-school distribution of as much as $12-15M if they can convince their top targets in the AAC. The deal would also require a GOR through at least 2030-31. Dellenger also reports the league is “selling access in the College Football Playoff: Win this league and, more years than not, you’ll secure the fifth automatic qualifier in the CFP. It is also, maybe down the line, selling more distribution from the CFP: Could the Pac-12 argue to get more of a cut of the cash than those in the Group of 5?” Should Memphis elect not to join, Dellenger observes it “could severely disable the MWC. The Pac-12 is likely to turn attention to UNLV, Air Force and Utah State, three programs that have or will soon see the league’s presentation to expansion members.” More from Dellenger. (link)

Florida A&M has officially named Florida Sports Foundation President/CEO Angela Suggs as its next AD. The FAMU Board of Trustees today approved a three-year $750K contract for Suggs, who will also be eligible for performance-based incentives for meeting benchmarks involving securing game guarantees, external fundraising, and increasing ticket sales separate from Investing in Champions packages, among other duties. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says of Tennessee’s “talent fee” that “everybody has got their internal way of (increasing revenue). Everybody has different timing. What Tennessee is doing is creative and timely – strike while the iron is hot.” Asked whether OSU will follow the Vols’ lead, Bjork replies: “Everything is on the table. But we have a little more time to map things out. … Ticket packages present options. Tennessee made it a requirement, but there are different ways to spin it, and we’ll put all ideas on the table. For us, 2025 is a [ticket] reseeding year. Through the Buckeye Club all priority seating sections will be reset…which will be a big revenue point for us.” Bjork goes on to remark that “I guess in some ways [what UT did] can help us. It breaks the ice on the conversation that revenue streams are really important. But you have to do what’s best locally, and our fans are sophisticated and want to be at the cutting edge.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair seized on last week’s football win over Mississippi State to rally support from all constituents, asserting that “now is the time to be all in on this program, all in on this head coach, all in on the staff, all in on these players. That’s Rocket Fund, that’s fundraising, that’s ticket sales, that’s a full Glass Bowl, that’s NIL support. We need it all right now. Don’t wait until tomorrow. I tell people, with all our programs, we are in the good old days of Toledo athletics. This is the good old days. Let’s not look back and say, ‘Ah, I wish I could go back to 2023, 2024.’ Let’s make this last forever. That takes everybody.” Meanwhile, UT’s current enrollment sits at 14,440, down from 20,626 a decade ago, and Interim President Matt Schroeder views this moment as an opportunity for the university at-large to seize. “In these last 10+ years, athletics, along with our world-class research, has really been the two buoys holding up the university as we reposition from an academic side. Think about what we have. I’m just going to brag a little bit, but what we have at the University of Toledo, the success that, I think many of our folks around here take it for granted. I know our athletics department, our men and women and our coaches do not.” Longtime donor Cleves Delp adds: “This is bigger than UT football, and what I mean by that is the University of Toledo is in desperate need of increased enrollment, and the front door to the university at this moment is this football program.” (link)

Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison has been named as the Vice Chair of NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee. As such, APSU Deputy AD/COO Niesha Campbell has taken over Harrison's appointment to the NCAA FCS Playoff Committee. (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel breaks down whether the ACC should acquiesce to demands from Florida State and Clemson to share revenue based on TV viewership and notes that “from 2013, the ACC’s first season with 14 football schools, through last week, 95 conference games drew TV audiences of at least 2M. That compilation does not include 2020, when pandemic concerns prompted scores of cancellations and postponements nationwide. Among those 95 contests, Clemson and Florida State played in 41 each. No one else was remotely close. Miami (FL) was next at 19, followed by Virginia Tech (13), NC State and Syracuse (12), Louisville (9), North Carolina, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech (8), Boston College (6), Virginia and Pitt (5) and Duke (3).” While the numbers are stark, Teel observes that “as Big 12 learned from its dysfunctional relationship with Texas, appeasing your bigfoot(s) doesn’t assure long-term stability. The Longhorns eventually bolted for SEC riches and took fellow football power Oklahoma with them.” (link)

Former Colorado Football AC Trevor Reilly talks with Front Office Sports’ Jill Painter Lopez and A.J. Perez about his outreach to Saudi Arabia, where he visited and proposed an investment of $10M from the PIF in CU’s collective. Reilly says the Saudis hope to bring 500M more visitors to the country over the next 10 years and potentially host a college football game there. “I said, ‘Let’s get together a formal proposal.’ This is totally rough. Here is me showing up here and trying to make some s*** happen. And they understood it. They were like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’” When he returned to Colorado, Reilly says he spoke with some coaches – although not HC Deion Sanders – and athletic department officials about his trip, and that’s when “things got weird.” Reilly: “I didn’t say Deion was going to do this, but I did say that he might be open to a conversation. So that’s something that I told them. I said, before we even go down any road with the collective, you guys need to decide if you want [the] Deion Sanders brand to be involved with that.” The Buffs eventually partnered with Blueprint Sports and Reilly says he became frustrated with the lack of movement on the NIL front. He was further perturbed by CU officials informing him his children, ages 9, 11, and 13, could no longer have access to the facility unless they were supervised the entire time. Reilly ultimately issued CU an ultimatum: show some progress on the NIL deals and allow his children to have the same access they had before or he would leave. Following his resignation, Reilly returned to the CU facility to retrieve some belongings and got into a physical altercation with graduate assistant Jordan Jynes, of which FOS has obtained video. CU says it has addressed the incident internally. More from FOS. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner examines Fox’s Friday night football lineups throughout the season and what games mean for the network as well as the future of live TV. Kosner Media Founder John Kosner and Desser Media President Ed Desser on replacing WWE Smackdown with college football: “In one move, they save money on WWE rights and simultaneously leverage their existing college football portfolio into a new primetime night that will be better received by advertisers (college sports vs. pro wrestling).” Wilner notes that, as an added bonus, the broadcasts are “free,” with Kosner and Desser explaining: “They would have produced these games anyway, and the (media) rights are already paid for.” Overall, Friday night games signal a larger shift in which live sports will begin taking over weeknight broadcast windows usually reserved for scripted shows. NBC, for example, will begin broadcasting Tuesday night NBA games in primetime, and Kosner and Desser note that “fans are going to see sports on network prime time virtually every night of the week.” Furthermore, Kosner and Desser tell Wilner they believe there will be “more and more live events in the afternoon” on weekdays. They also expect the NFL “to at least explore” the possibility of broadcasting a weekly Friday night game when the next broadcast contract cycle begins in the early 2030s, potentially challenging the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The NBA and NFL see both positive and negative aspects of the SAFE Bet Act, and an NFL source tells ESPN’s David Purdum that the league is appreciative of legislative interest, especially any provisions designed to help protect the integrity of the league and combat game manipulation. "At the same time, though, we're concerned that there might be some unintended consequences on some of these provisions. They're ripe for further discussion." Meanwhile, an NCAA spokesperson tells Purdum the organization welcomes the SAFE Bet Act, particularly its ban on prop bets on individual college athletes, and supports national standards that "protect competition integrity" and "educate young people about the dangers of sports betting." An NBA source says the league is monitoring the legislation and believes it is "at the starting point to a very lengthy process." (link)

The Big 12, in partnership with Raycom Sports, is launching Big 12 Studios, which will “create and deliver original programming and content to fans as a FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) channel across multiple major platforms, including planned launches on leading platforms early this Fall that will be announced soon, as well as major VOD platforms such as YouTube. Select programming from Big 12 Studios will also air across local TV stations throughout multiple Big 12 Conference markets, which include Gray Media’s Arizona’s Family Sports Network in Phoenix and Tucson, KSMO in Kansas City, and KMYL in Lubbock, Texas.” (link)

Oklahoma State is expanding its partnership with Bank of Oklahoma to feature BOK logos on the playing surface of Boone Pickens Stadium. The logos will debut on the field this Saturday. Cowboys AD Chad Weiberg: “With the ongoing transformation of college athletics, it is critical that we embrace new opportunities with our strategic partners to grow the support for our programs and our student-athletes. Bank of Oklahoma has been a great supporter of OSU Athletics for a long time and we’re grateful for this significant new commitment they have made to further advance the partnership.” The deal was secured through Learfield’s Cowboy Sports Properties. Cal AD Jim Knowlton and Stanford AD Bernard Muir reaffirm their commitment to the ACC in light of the Pac-12’s rebuild, with Knowlton explaining: “Here’s what I would say: I’m really proud of Teresa Gould for working hard to rebuild the Pac-12. And then I’d say we are absolutely, 1,000% committed to the ACC. We’re excited about it, and it’s a great fit for Cal.” Muir: “We’re proud members of the ACC and looking forward to enhancing this relationship. I’m happy for my former Pac-12 brethren, Oregon State and Washington State, to rebuild, if you will. Our concentration is solely on the ACC and trying to compete in a very challenging conference. … We want to compete at the highest level, and this affords us that opportunity.” (link)

Former Arizona/Washington State/UNLV AD Jim Livengood believes the Pac-12 will expand beyond eight teams and tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Ed Graney: “It’s probably more a case of them looking for four more schools. And maybe beyond that. In my heart of hearts, I think this is going to be a bigger expansion than most people believe. And everybody I have talked to — nobody understands why UNLV wouldn’t be in that mix. I’m baffled by [UNLV not being one of the four]. It doesn’t make sense to anyone. There has never been a time, and I’m serious about this, when UNLV has had better leadership. From the president to the athletic director to coaches to staff. UNLV has never been in a better position for a move like this.” Former Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson adds: “From an individual perspective, with the way the (Las Vegas) market has grown and the fact the Pac-12 plays its football championship game there and its basketball tournament there…it’s puzzling. I know they need two more members, but it could be four more. Who knows?” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken takes a look at the potential ripple effects of Pac-12 expansion and notes that AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti “had months ago laid out a scenario where Washington State and Oregon State would use the significant assets they control from the Pac-12’s breakup to form a so-called ‘best of the rest’ conference that would target some AAC members. Pernetti’s prescience has bought him some credibility within his membership – and perhaps some time. At Memphis, arguably the most attractive school not currently in a power conference, there is clearly some intrigue about the new Pac-12. .... But there are also concerns.” Specifically, there is concern about money, and Wolken points out that it’s not a guarantee the Pac-12’s media rights deal will command significantly more than the $8-9M current AAC schools are believed to earn per year. Further, a large chunk of any additional revenue could be erased by increased travel costs. Additionally, Wolken notes Memphis is “now eyeing the ACC as a potential landing spot” in the next few years, so “essentially, what Memphis officials have to figure out is whether it's worth joining the Pac-12 now for a bit more money, but less flexibility to jump again if the ACC proactively expands before 2030.” Pernetti is also pursuing Air Force for membership, and Wolken explains there’s a “belief within the AAC that having all three service academies would give the league some protection both in CFP negotiations and in the halls of Washington, D.C., should power conference schools try to engineer a full breakaway from the NCAA that would undoubtedly catch the attention of lawmakers.” More from Wolken on further impacts to the Mountain West and FCS. Coastal Carolina Executive Advisor to the President/Chairman Emeritus of Athletics Joe Moglia argues the NCAA spends money irresponsibly, citing the “astonishing $234M” in legal fees over the last four years and $15M on lobbying Congress since 2019. “They have little to show for it, apart from a victory in a wrongful death lawsuit related to a concussion.” Moglia goes on to point out that in 2011, the “NCAA only spent $4.1M on legal fees, compared to $61.5M last year. The organization’s investments only generated $2.5M more than they expended on legal fees last year. This is the business equivalent of a 103 degree temperature. … In reality, the NCAA drains money from the system, spends hundreds of millions protecting itself, and delivers little of value to its member organizations or student-athletes. The purpose of the NCAA has become the perpetuation of the NCAA, not the protection of student-athletes and universities. The money that was spent compensating Emmert and paying white shoe law firms could have been put to use by athletics departments and universities—or used to compensate professional student athletes. But people have forgotten that the NCAA is supposed to work for them—not the other way around. Eventually, university leaders are going to have to wake up to the fact that the NCAA is siphoning off revenue that they could use for other things and instead spends it on self-protection and compensation. The NCAA has demonstrated time and again that it cannot solve the issues facing college sports. It can barely defend itself. It’s time for college athletics to move on.” (link)

SMU AD Rick Hart Q&As with Lonestar Live’s Jacob Richman and says the Mustangs are preparing for the House settlement should it be approved. “We’re preparing so we can position our teams to compete for championships in the ACC and opportunities to compete and advance in the postseason. We’ll be very competitive and if that settlement is eventually approved, then we’ll be ready to position our teams favorably so they can go out and be among the teams in the country that are chasing playoff appearances and national championships.” Hart also talks about getting to know Men’s Basketball HC Andy Enfield and says: “He makes it very easy to partner with him. He’s a guy that has a consistent track record on and off the court, shares our values, recruits young men into our program who represent themselves and their families and the university in the way you expect. The upside is tremendous, not just for this season but the future, with all of our sports. Andy being in a unique situation because it’s his first year, he hasn’t coached a game yet, he got here in April.” (link)

Ohio State AD Ross Bjork joins the Bucknuts 247Sports podcast to discuss several topics, including upgrades to Ohio Stadium and explains there exists a “comprehensive roadmap” on when particular areas need to be replaced or updated. “Right now the sound system is only in the south scoreboard. When do we have to replace the scoreboard? When do we have to replace certain elements that are ending their useful life? And then what do we do to drive revenue? Let’s face it, we’re in a new era where we've always had revenue at the forefront but even more so in this new era of college athletics. Revenue is so essential so things like the 1922 Club that we just announced – it's not going to affect the seating bowl, you actually can't access that club from the seating bowl – it's a different experience. But that space was sitting there, it was a vacated office area, classroom area. That’s an asset. How do we capitalize on the asset? So I don't ever see doing a comprehensive stadium-wide renovation like they did back in the late '90s. … I think we have to look at it in pieces and parts and stages and almost do sort of tactical surgery, if you will, on the building. So, we're going to continue to do that. I think we have a good roadmap, but how do we monetize it? How do we make it for everybody?” Bjork also reiterates that if the House settlement is approved, OSU will reimagine how its broad-based programs look. “We'll have some sports that don't have scholarships. We’ll have some sports that only have scholarships and NIL opportunities. And then we'll have some sports that have scholarship and revenue-sharing.” More from Bjork. (link)

Arctos Partner Chad Hutchinson discussed private equity’s involvement in sports during the AXS DRIVE event and said about college sports: “PE cannot invest directly into the athletic department of a college. There is no perceived exit.” Hutchinson did indicate that college mixed-use could be a target. Hutchinson explained the difference between sovereign wealth funds compared to private equity firms by noting: “We’re purpose-built for sports. ... Generally, when you think about a sovereign wealth fund, they’re providing liquidity. It comes down to what the teams want.” Hutchinson also noted there is a “ton of momentum” in women’s sports, adding: “They have to continue to drive revenue.” (link)

ECU’s Pirates Unite Campaign for Comprehensive Excellence has raised nearly $40M in just over two years, buoyed by 13 gifts of $1M or more, according to Pirates AD Jon Gilbert, who adds: “As of late last week, we had 356 generous donors that made investments to build the Isley Indoor Performance Center. We were $2M short of completely funding the building through private giving. Pirate Club Executive Director Ryan Robinson and I met with two individuals last week who agreed to fund the remaining cost of the indoor building, plus additional investments to benefit our student-athletes and sports programs. More to come next week on these two special individuals.” Gilbert also reports ECU has $3M left to raise for the Dick and Sarah Bennett Baseball Building expansion project, and “we are working closely with these same two individuals to close the funding gap.” (link)

Meanwhile, Colorado is averaging 4.56M viewers per football game this season, down more than half (-51%) versus the 9.35M viewers during the same time period in 2023, per Sportico’s Anthony Crupi, who notes: “Football fans seemed to grow weary of the Coach Prime show before the leaves started turning [last season]; by Oct. 13, Colorado’s deliveries had shrunk to 3.29M versus Stanford, only to bottom out at 2.77M with a 26-19 loss to Oregon State on Nov. 4. In light of last season’s fade, the networks have been a bit more prudent about their commitment to Colorado this time around. While there’s a lot of give in the college football TV schedule, Sanders’ squad has just three confirmed national dates on tap, including an Oct. 26 meeting with Cincinnati that will be carried on a yet-to-be-determined ESPN platform, and a Black Friday matinee against Oklahoma State on ABC.” (link)

Sports TV Ratings doesn’t expect NBC Sports to release any viewership data for last weekend’s Apple Cup. “Maybe they'll surprise me, but at least for now I think the expectation should be that the only Peacock exclusive numbers that will be made available are for NFL exclusives.” Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill subsequently observes that “given that we are constantly told that fans are moving to streaming, it’s odd that we never see any streaming numbers for CFB, WNBA, CBB, MLS, MLB. I wonder why that is.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes responds: “Been saying that the record levels of viewing for sporting events & programming delivered across all demos each week on established platforms has to be acknowledged by recognizing that the large majority of sports fans remain connected to Pay TV bundles despite sub declines.” (link)
