The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Pittsburgh is available, for those looking to lead the Panthers. Florida Gulf Coast AD Colin Hargis: “The D1.dossier was a great resource for me during my process with FGCU. It provided me with a comprehensive overview of the department and university while also presenting granular information in many areas. The time saved by utilizing the dossier was invaluable. I would highly recommend a D1.dossier subscription to any administrator considering or entering a search process.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports Pac-12 leaders met yesterday with this from an unnamed source: “Getting close to the next steps of nailing things down.” Canzano says Memphis continues to be a “top target” with USF, Tulane, UTSA & UNLV also in the mix. One source says of the Rebels: “UNLV is the biggest puzzle out there. The TV ratings are not great, but you’d get the buzz of Las Vegas.” More from sources: “We need eight. The intent isn’t just to add teams to add them. Is it a total of eight? Nine? 10? Ultimately that’s dependent on who else wants to be part of doing something epic. [...] How could Gonzaga not come up? Could it work? What would that look like? Those are the kinds of questions being asked right now.” On a potential timeline, an unnamed AD tells Canzano: “I can’t imagine it’s going to take long.” (link)

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt joins Front Office Sports Today and says the 12-team College Football Playoff has “sparked a lot of conversations, one about non-conference scheduling philosophy, strength of schedule. When we were at 10 teams for so long as the Big 12 conference you played a round robin. So, you played every school every year. Now with 16 teams, nine conference games, we don't play everybody every year, so it has made us look at how we schedule from a conference perspective as well, on campus, what's our strategy to scheduling non-conference matchups? But at the end of the day we know if we win the Big 12 Conference, if we’re one of the top two programs in the Big 12 conference, we have a pathway to the College Football Playoff, and that’s what our goal is. I think it's going to be exciting for college football. I think it’s had the greatest regular season of any sport out there and, I think this 12-team playoff is going to just add to that.” Hocutt on what’s next in conference realignment: “At some point we have to think differently. We have to look out for the good of the whole and not individual and in our current system that's challenging because as an athletics director I am charged every day to grow and advance Texas Tech. Conference commissioners are charged with growing the revenue and serving their constituent group, their conference. The NCAA has very little to do with college football at this level, if anything. So, who is thinking for the good of the whole product of college football?” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello and Richard Johnson go about answering whether Florida AD Scott Stricklin’s job is safe and who the Gators will target to take over as Football HC upon parting ways with Billy Napier, whose departure appears increasingly inevitable. In fact, Marcello & Johnson report that “behind the scenes, the gears are already in motion for a potential change, and there is more alignment among administrators than message board rumors tend to say. Stricklin, who is facing criticism of his own after decisions to hire Dan Mullen and then Napier, has been informed the decision whether to fire Napier is his to make. In that scenario, Stricklin will also be tasked with searching for a new coach, sources familiar with the discussions at Florida told CBS Sports this week. … Rumors of wholesale changes in the athletics department appear premature, sources tell CBS Sports, with communication between the president's office and Stricklin remaining open and positive. Napier, however, is the lone party on an island, fighting for survival.” Marcello & Johnson note that Stricklin has a positive reputation throughout the industry and within the halls of UF leadership, and one Power 4 AD offers: "He gets it. Nobody does more research than that guy.” Marcello & Johnson add that the “same AD pointed to the success rates of Foley and former Alabama AD Mal Moore, who made several hires that didn't pan out in football before or after landing national champions Urban Meyer and Nick Saban, respectively.” More. Baylor AD Mack Rhoades says Football HC Dave Aranda has “crushed it when you think about retention of players, staff [hirings], transfer portal, verbal commits right now for December of 2024. He’s done all of that exceptionally well. The fact that he is so deep into football has given him an edge. He’s grumpy; he’s got an edge. You’ve seen more emotion from him, and all those things are really positive.” Rhoades adds: “I’m proud of Dave; It’s really hard to juggle being a head coach and a defensive coordinator. When you think about the Utah game, plus the other two, what stands out for me is that our players are competing. They are fighting, and that’s really good to see. It is such an important part of the team's culture.” Despite coming off a 3-9 football season, the Bears have enjoyed large crowds at home games this season, with over 46K showing up for the matchup against Air Force, and Rhoades remarks: “Hats off to our fan engagement team. The entire athletic department is doing a better job of connecting with our fans. I thought it was a great atmosphere [against Air Force]. When you think about our first two home games, I’m really proud of our fans. They’ve been terrific. They’ve been loud and have shown up.” (link)

UNLV Football HC Barry Odom does not mince words when talking to his team about the makeup of its schedule, which includes three games against Power 4 opponents this season. Odom on handling the little things and improving week to week: “If you do that, the way that things are set up, it presents an opportunity to be in the 12-team Playoff. Why not be the voice of it? We’re aligned in what we hear, say, think and do — and here are the reasons why we practice the way we do, here’s the outcome that we’re trying to achieve.” Similarly, Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield believes every Group of 5 coach is using the hope of a Playoff spot as a motivator this season. Silverfield: “Anytime you sat down with a recruit, be it in January or spring or the summer, you could say, ‘Listen, if you come here, you have a true chance to go to the Playoff if we win this thing.’ You couldn’t say that in the past.” Northern Illinois HC Thomas Hammock believes many of the upsets by Group of 5 teams this season stem from the fact that they have veteran teams, which play as cohesive units, “You see those teams with all those high-profile freshmen who go and play a team with some seniors and juniors, and they lose. That’s what you’re seeing in college football.” More. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde posits that upsets over Power 4 schools by Northern Illinois, UNLV, Memphis and Toledo represent a “restoration of hope that college football success isn’t solely about who can spend their way to the biggest advantage. Or bankroll enough money to correct their egregious errors.” There is also “an additional benefit to toppling giants, beyond pocketing a seven-figure guarantee check and earning a week of celebration. Someone from the Group of 5 conferences is going to the College Football Playoff. Northern Illinois, Toledo, UNLV and Memphis have moved to the front of the pack chasing that new windfall.” MAC schools, Forde continues, are “particularly illustrative of how to build a competitive team without quick fixes. The basic tenets: target three-star prospects in your backyard; find a secondary niche in a talent-rich state; create a culture where your players want to stay and graduate.” Neither Toledo nor Northern Illinois are “flush with transfers down from power-conference schools, or up from the FCS ranks. They’re primarily built on high school recruiting, then keeping those players within the program. They develop and mature, and are ready to contribute as older veterans. … There might be an ever-expanding pool of money available for transfer players, but playing time is finite. There are only so many starting jobs, and everyone wants to get on the field as opposed to sitting on the sideline. The really big money is in the NFL, and the best way to get there is to put your skills on film—something that can be done at places like Toledo.” (link)

ESPN’s David Hale reacts: “This is the dilemma though: In a 1-off, yes, Cinderella still exists. But…non-P5s are 6-58 vs P5 so far, an .094 win%. Those wins are vs ND (true shocker), FSU, Vandy, Miss St and Houston (combined 2-8 vs FBS this year.). The trend line is pretty clear…2022-24, ie NIL/Portal era, G5s have a 14% win% vs P5. 2019-21, G5 beat P5 more than 25% of the time.” (link)

When it comes to media rights valuations, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is told by consultants and academics that “it isn’t just how many people watch a broadcast that’s important. It’s who is watching, how long are they watching, and what can we do with that data.” Gambling is the newest variable in the equation, and Brown posits that Hawaii is uniquely positioned to benefit. While UH’s time zone obviously limits the viewership pool, Brown asks: “But you know who does like to stay up and watch games that kickoff at midnight? Besides parents of small children, Reddit sickos, and professional scouts? Folks who like to gamble on college football. … There’s evidence to suggest that folks are betting, disproportionately, on games in that late night window. Data shared with me from one major gambling monitoring service suggested that roughly $160M was legally bet on Hawaii football games last season, just behind UNLV for the highest ‘team handle’ in the Mountain West. … $160M would also be more than some P4 programs.” As such, Brown points out there could be additional research done “to determine the possible value of gambling-oriented viewers to broadcast companies or ad partners. If somebody has money on a game, are they more likely to watch late into the 3rd quarter than somebody who is watching purely out of love for the home team?” Brown also suggests the Rainbow Warriors could use such data to leverage its location as a more “in-demand staging ground for neutral site or MTE events, so other teams can take advantage of the TV window (and also: being in Hawaii). Or perhaps some schools could elect to play a game every so often at midnight, even if they’re in the central or eastern time zones.” Lots more. (link)

Asked whether Georgia has lost out on some players in the transfer portal due to existing NIL rules, Bulldogs Football HC Kirby Smart says: “It’s all about what you have available, right? And some people are willing to spend beyond their ability to raise it. Like unfulfilled promises. We’re not going to have unfulfilled promises where guys reach back out and say, ‘They said they could do this, but they didn’t. They said they could do that and didn’t.’ We’ve lost some in those regards. I don’t know that it was an inability to do it. It was not stepping over our skis and putting our body too much out there and saying, ‘OK we’ve committed to do this’ and (then) can’t do it. It’s a hard world out there because you don’t really know what you can and can’t do. People make promises, and nobody has a bounty sitting out there that big where they can pay everybody that.” Smart also reiterated that it’s important that players choose schools for reasons beyond money and Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order will not change that. “It’s not like it’s going to be this open surplus. It’s just helping us be competitive with others. And I’m sure Georgia Tech feels the same way.” (link)

Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley believes student-athletes’ newfound freedoms via NIL and the transfer portal have been a long time coming but adds: “We just need more structure. We need more guardrails. We need more leadership. You can't have what's going on currently in our sport, which is total free agency all the time. There’s no sport that functions or operates like this, but college basketball, at least on the men’s side, there’s so much untapped potential with what March Madness brings to the table. It’s the second-most-watched sporting event in America every single year.” Hurley believes there needs to be contracts with players and notes it’s “not just good for the universities in terms of getting a commitment from the players themselves to stay and to not have so much transition on a yearly basis. Eventually that's not going to be good for the sport because college fans want players that are going to be with their program for a couple of years. They don’t want their teams to change every year. They won't tolerate that at some point as fans, but I do think [contracts] protect the players too because there's a lot of schools that promise more money from an NIL standpoint than they can deliver. … So I think there's a lot of protection for both sides.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger contends Memphis is the fulcrum upon which conference realignment will now pivot, noting the Tigers don’t have a “formal invitation into the Pac-12, but that’s likely only because [they haven’t] accepted a (forthcoming) invitation. The oft-used motto during the coaching cycle applies here: A job cannot be offered if it isn’t accepted.” Should the Tigers accept the Pac-12’s invitation, it could create a “cascading exit that would leave a gaping hole in the AAC. South Florida and Tulane are unlikely to leave without Memphis. And Memphis might not leave without them. This is a packaged deal or no deal at all.” One person involved in the negotiations tells Dellenger: “They may not want to go, but they don’t want the other guy to go without them.” According to people who have seen the Pac-12’s presentation, the league is projecting a per-school distribution of as much as $12-15M if they can convince their top targets in the AAC. The deal would also require a GOR through at least 2030-31. Dellenger also reports the league is “selling access in the College Football Playoff: Win this league and, more years than not, you’ll secure the fifth automatic qualifier in the CFP. It is also, maybe down the line, selling more distribution from the CFP: Could the Pac-12 argue to get more of a cut of the cash than those in the Group of 5?” Should Memphis elect not to join, Dellenger observes it “could severely disable the MWC. The Pac-12 is likely to turn attention to UNLV, Air Force and Utah State, three programs that have or will soon see the league’s presentation to expansion members.” More from Dellenger. (link)

Florida A&M has officially named Florida Sports Foundation President/CEO Angela Suggs as its next AD. Ohio State AD Ross Bjork says of Tennessee’s “talent fee” that “everybody has got their internal way of (increasing revenue). Everybody has different timing. What Tennessee is doing is creative and timely – strike while the iron is hot.” Asked whether OSU will follow the Vols’ lead, Bjork replies: “Everything is on the table. But we have a little more time to map things out. … Ticket packages present options. Tennessee made it a requirement, but there are different ways to spin it, and we’ll put all ideas on the table. For us, 2025 is a [ticket] reseeding year. Through the Buckeye Club all priority seating sections will be reset…which will be a big revenue point for us.” Bjork goes on to remark that “I guess in some ways [what UT did] can help us. It breaks the ice on the conversation that revenue streams are really important. But you have to do what’s best locally, and our fans are sophisticated and want to be at the cutting edge.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair seized on last week’s football win over Mississippi State to rally support from all constituents, asserting that “now is the time to be all in on this program, all in on this head coach, all in on the staff, all in on these players. That’s Rocket Fund, that’s fundraising, that’s ticket sales, that’s a full Glass Bowl, that’s NIL support. We need it all right now. Don’t wait until tomorrow. I tell people, with all our programs, we are in the good old days of Toledo athletics. This is the good old days. Let’s not look back and say, ‘Ah, I wish I could go back to 2023, 2024.’ Let’s make this last forever. That takes everybody.” Meanwhile, UT’s current enrollment sits at 14,440, down from 20,626 a decade ago, and Interim President Matt Schroeder views this moment as an opportunity for the university at-large to seize. “In these last 10+ years, athletics, along with our world-class research, has really been the two buoys holding up the university as we reposition from an academic side. Think about what we have. I’m just going to brag a little bit, but what we have at the University of Toledo, the success that, I think many of our folks around here take it for granted. I know our athletics department, our men and women and our coaches do not.” Longtime donor Cleves Delp adds: “This is bigger than UT football, and what I mean by that is the University of Toledo is in desperate need of increased enrollment, and the front door to the university at this moment is this football program.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel breaks down whether the ACC should acquiesce to demands from Florida State and Clemson to share revenue based on TV viewership and notes that “from 2013, the ACC’s first season with 14 football schools, through last week, 95 conference games drew TV audiences of at least 2M. That compilation does not include 2020, when pandemic concerns prompted scores of cancellations and postponements nationwide. Among those 95 contests, Clemson and Florida State played in 41 each. No one else was remotely close. Miami (FL) was next at 19, followed by Virginia Tech (13), NC State and Syracuse (12), Louisville (9), North Carolina, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech (8), Boston College (6), Virginia and Pitt (5) and Duke (3).” While the numbers are stark, Teel observes that “as Big 12 learned from its dysfunctional relationship with Texas, appeasing your bigfoot(s) doesn’t assure long-term stability. The Longhorns eventually bolted for SEC riches and took fellow football power Oklahoma with them.” (link)

Former Colorado Football AC Trevor Reilly talks with Front Office Sports’ Jill Painter Lopez and A.J. Perez about his outreach to Saudi Arabia, where he visited and proposed an investment of $10M from the PIF in CU’s collective. Reilly says the Saudis hope to bring 500M more visitors to the country over the next 10 years and potentially host a college football game there. “I said, ‘Let’s get together a formal proposal.’ This is totally rough. Here is me showing up here and trying to make some s*** happen. And they understood it. They were like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’” When he returned to Colorado, Reilly says he spoke with some coaches – although not HC Deion Sanders – and athletic department officials about his trip, and that’s when “things got weird.” Reilly: “I didn’t say Deion was going to do this, but I did say that he might be open to a conversation. So that’s something that I told them. I said, before we even go down any road with the collective, you guys need to decide if you want [the] Deion Sanders brand to be involved with that.” The Buffs eventually partnered with Blueprint Sports and Reilly says he became frustrated with the lack of movement on the NIL front. He was further perturbed by CU officials informing him his children, ages 9, 11, and 13, could no longer have access to the facility unless they were supervised the entire time. Reilly ultimately issued CU an ultimatum: show some progress on the NIL deals and allow his children to have the same access they had before or he would leave. Following his resignation, Reilly returned to the CU facility to retrieve some belongings and got into a physical altercation with graduate assistant Jordan Jynes, of which FOS has obtained video. CU says it has addressed the incident internally. More from FOS. (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner examines Fox’s Friday night football lineups throughout the season and what games mean for the network as well as the future of live TV. Kosner Media Founder John Kosner and Desser Media President Ed Desser on replacing WWE Smackdown with college football: “In one move, they save money on WWE rights and simultaneously leverage their existing college football portfolio into a new primetime night that will be better received by advertisers (college sports vs. pro wrestling).” Wilner notes that, as an added bonus, the broadcasts are “free,” with Kosner and Desser explaining: “They would have produced these games anyway, and the (media) rights are already paid for.” Overall, Friday night games signal a larger shift in which live sports will begin taking over weeknight broadcast windows usually reserved for scripted shows. NBC, for example, will begin broadcasting Tuesday night NBA games in primetime, and Kosner and Desser note that “fans are going to see sports on network prime time virtually every night of the week.” Furthermore, Kosner and Desser tell Wilner they believe there will be “more and more live events in the afternoon” on weekdays. They also expect the NFL “to at least explore” the possibility of broadcasting a weekly Friday night game when the next broadcast contract cycle begins in the early 2030s, potentially challenging the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. The NBA and NFL see both positive and negative aspects of the SAFE Bet Act, and an NFL source tells ESPN’s David Purdum that the league is appreciative of legislative interest, especially any provisions designed to help protect the integrity of the league and combat game manipulation. "At the same time, though, we're concerned that there might be some unintended consequences on some of these provisions. They're ripe for further discussion." Meanwhile, an NCAA spokesperson tells Purdum the organization welcomes the SAFE Bet Act, particularly its ban on prop bets on individual college athletes, and supports national standards that "protect competition integrity" and "educate young people about the dangers of sports betting." An NBA source says the league is monitoring the legislation and believes it is "at the starting point to a very lengthy process." (link)

The Big 12, in partnership with Raycom Sports, is launching Big 12 Studios, which will “create and deliver original programming and content to fans as a FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) channel across multiple major platforms, including planned launches on leading platforms early this Fall that will be announced soon, as well as major VOD platforms such as YouTube. Select programming from Big 12 Studios will also air across local TV stations throughout multiple Big 12 Conference markets, which include Gray Media’s Arizona’s Family Sports Network in Phoenix and Tucson, KSMO in Kansas City, and KMYL in Lubbock, Texas.” (link)

Oklahoma State is expanding its partnership with Bank of Oklahoma to feature BOK logos on the playing surface of Boone Pickens Stadium. The logos will debut on the field this Saturday. Cowboys AD Chad Weiberg: “With the ongoing transformation of college athletics, it is critical that we embrace new opportunities with our strategic partners to grow the support for our programs and our student-athletes. Bank of Oklahoma has been a great supporter of OSU Athletics for a long time and we’re grateful for this significant new commitment they have made to further advance the partnership.” The deal was secured through Learfield’s Cowboy Sports Properties.
