After rumblings of a move to the Pac-12, Memphis, Tulane, USF and UTSA will remain in the AAC, stating: "Together, we are committed to continuing to build the American brand, exploring new opportunities for exposure and value, and developing innovative economic resources–all in service of our student-athletes. While we acknowledge receiving interest in our institutions from other conferences, we firmly believe that it is in our individual and collective best interests to uphold our commitment to each other." Yahoo's Ross Dellenger reports: "The schools — as a group — decided to remain in their current conference, where AAC commissioner Tim Pernetti is exploring avenues for revenue enhancement, including private-equity involvement, new distribution models and further expansion of the league footprint. The four AAC programs received on Monday proposed terms from the Pac-12 that included projected annual revenue numbers ($10-15M), a five-year grant of rights and only partial coverage of an AAC exit fee that is believed to be around $25 million per school." SBJ’s Ben Portnoy reports Gonzaga is not joining the Pac-12, at least not yet. “The sides have talked, as you’d imagine, but no deal is in place and an announcement isn’t pending at this moment. As with anything realignment-wise, this doesn't preclude something happening between the Pac-12 and Gonzaga eventually. The fit certainly makes sense on a lot of levels, but it's not a done deal right now.” (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds: “The Pac-12 is and has been in serious discussion with Gonzaga, as previously reported. The talks continue but are not resolved.” (link); And from ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura: “The Pac-12 has had discussions with Gonzaga about joining the conference and while it could lead to an agreement, nothing has been agreed to yet, per source.” (link); Accordingly, Zags’ AD Chris Standiford to The Spokesman-Review’s Jim Meehan on Action Network’s Brett McMurphy’s filing: “That is not accurate reporting.” (link)

Air Force has committed to remaining in the Mountain West and has signed or is expected to soon sign a new GOR deal with financial incentives, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports. (link)

The Pac-12 will dip into its reserves to pay the “poaching penalty” for adding Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State from the Mountain West, but The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner quotes a source as saying: “Never in the history of realignment has a departure penalty been paid in full.” The Pac-12 could, Wilner continues, offer loans at little or zero interest to help schools pay their exit fees and adds: “Once the attorneys for the Pac-12, the four schools and the Mountain West get serious, the bill won’t remain $115M for long. At some point, the cost of litigation starts to wear down university presidents.” Meanwhile, Wilner ponders the following scenario: “If the Mountain West dissolves, that $115M could drop to $0. We don’t believe that outcome is likely, but it’s worth mentioning. A supermajority vote would be required to dissolve the Mountain West — that’s nine schools. Currently, there are four votes for dissolution: Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State.” As for the Pac-12’s media rights value, Wilner figures it will eventually come to between $8M and $12M per school. Indiana AD Scott Dolson has signed a new three-year contract that will increase his base salary from $519K to $950K. According to the Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman, Dolson is scheduled to get another $125K in 2025 under a “five-year deferred-compensation plan included in his original employment letter from March 2020 that has been carried forward in the new contract. Dolson already has been credited with a total of $375K over the first four years of the plan, which would pay out if Dolson remains IU’s AD through July 2025 or is fired without cause before then. In addition, Dolson will be owed $100K per year over a five-year period for what the contract terms ‘unused sick leave days accrued between (Dolson’s) first day of employment through May 31, 2024.’ That final piece of compensation will be paid in full in the event Dolson is terminated before the expiration of the contract. Any further salary increases will be handed out at the sole discretion of the university president.” Incentives include an additional $47,500 for each Big Ten championship up to $190K per year, an additional $95K per year if the department’s cumulative APR is at or above 950 and $100K for each national championship. If Dolson leaves IU for an AD position outside the Big Ten, he would owe 20% of a year’s salary, or $190K. If Dolson left for the same position at another Big Ten school that number would rise to 30%, or $285K. Should IU part ways with Dolson without cause, it would owe him the remainder of his base salary as well as the amassed account balance of his deferred compensation. (link)

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who recently served as special advisor to former Stanford Interim President Richard Saller on athletics-related matters, talks with The Stanford Daily about her perspective on the changing landscape and says: “I’m old-fashioned. I think that the value proposition is that you get a scholarship, the best training possible, the best coaching possible, great nutrition and a chance to display your talents. Then, if you’re good enough, you become an employee of a professional league. That’s the world that I’m most comfortable with.” Rice adds: “There are places that have not benefited the student-athlete in the right way, where the degree wasn’t front and center. But if you can be in a place where you can get a scholarship where another student is working 20 hours a week and taking out loans to do the same thing, that’s a pretty good value proposition. … NIL when it’s done right is a good idea. NIL goes bad when it becomes an inducement for transfer or for recruitment.” Rice, who also serves as director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford, implores student-athletes to have a Plan B: “You want to recognize that your sport is going to be a relatively small part of your life. Even if you make it to the top of the mountain athletically, you are going to want to have gotten your education.” For Stanford, Rice says it’s incumbent upon the school to make sure student-athletes have everything they need to succeed academically and athletically: “If we’re going to recruit athletes, we say to them to be excellent in the classroom and be excellent on the playing field. We have to make that possible.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann notes the NCAA’s role is likely to diminish regardless of what happens with the House settlement, citing numerous state laws which prohibit the association from punishing schools over NIL-related matters. McCann points out that the “NCAA could challenge those states in court by asserting their laws unlawfully interfere with two provisions in Article I of the U.S. Constitution: the Commerce Clause (Section 8) and the Contract Clause (Section 10). … That legal playbook worked for the NCAA when it took on the state of Nevada in the wake of the UNLV/Jerry Tarkanian scandal. But that was a more confident era for the NCAA and amateurism. The NCAA of the 2020s is a more scrutinized entity whose long-standing legal arguments have been rebuked in court.” McCann goes on to observe: “The fact that the antitrust settlement, even if approved, wouldn’t insulate the NCAA from other amateurism challenges also reveals its limited importance. Athletes outside the classes retain their rights to raise antitrust claims. The settlement could also be challenged on Title IX and other grounds. Further, college athletes continue to make progress toward recognition as employees who can unionize and demand collective bargaining. … ‘Amateurism’ and ‘student-athlete’ may or may not survive as meaningful terms in a post-settlement world. But labels won’t matter when reality tells a different story. If college sports looks like pro sports, if it sounds like pro sports and is paid like pro sports, then it just may be pro sports.” (link)

Former USC star RB Reggie Bush has filed a lawsuit against USC, the Pac-12 and the NCAA seeking compensation for the use of his NIL without permission. Bush’s attorney, Evan Selik: “This case is not just about seeking justice for Reggie Bush. It’s about setting a precedent for the fair treatment of all college athletes. Our goal is to rectify this injustice and pave the way for a system where athletes are rightfully recognized, compensated and treated fairly for their contributions.” Levi G. McCathern II, another attorney representing Bush, says: "We appreciate that the new administration at USC is trying to pick up the pieces of the former administrations' unjust and improper handling of Reggie Bush; however the delay in fixing this speaks volumes.” (link)

The Big 12 is expanding its agreement with CBS Sports to “significantly increase” the number of men’s basketball games broadcast on the network’s platforms. CBS Sports currently broadcasts a minimum of six Big 12 men’s college basketball games annually on CBS, with those games streaming live on Paramount+. The new agreement, which runs through 2026-27, adds 20 games per year to air on CBS Sports Network to bring the total number of Big 12 men’s basketball games to at least 26 per season across CBS Sports platforms. According to Opendorse, top college athletes now make an average of 35.3% of what the median salary is in their corresponding pro league, and Opendorse Director of NIL and Business Insights Braly Keller tells the Arizona Daily Star’s Bruce Pascoe that $3M to $5M is likely needed to stay competitive in men’s hoops. Keller adds: “When you start to dial in closer with more recent data, $3.3M could cover just your starting five” if those players are all Top 25 earners. “There’s some reports in the Big 12 where we’re starting to see some of their forwards (receiving) in excess of $1M a year. The Big 12 is a hotbed for basketball right now and where earnings can be at.” Meanwhile, the details of the market remain opaque even to coaches, with Colorado HC Tad Boyle saying: “I’m coaching, and I don’t know (what’s going on) because there’s no transparency. Everything you hear and everything you read, you don’t know what’s true. But I do know this: There’s a lot of kids that have been promised things that have not been delivered.” Keller says less than 5% of Power 4 schools have a dedicated GM but that 75% have at least one full-time employee working with NIL issues. “And 100% of schools have people handling these responsibilities one way or another. As we start to get closer and beyond with revenue sharing, those will be busy people, and they’re going to be commonplace.” More. (link)

Houston Men’s Basketball HC Kelvin Sampson talks with Sportico’s Daniel Libit about the Cougars’ decision to participate in the Players Era Festival and says he first heard about it from Portland Trailblazers Asst. GM Steve Rosenberry. Sampson recalls saying: “C’mon, man, quit playing. He started rattling off all this stuff like I was like on The Price Is Right when the balloons start falling.” Libit observes that “whether Players Era will live up to all its hype remains an open question, but it likely would not have gotten nearly this far, this quickly, without the initial buy-in of Sampson. … The compliance director of one Power Four athletic department told Sportico that, upon being pitched an invite last year, his school instantly decided the NCAA ‘was going to find a way to not make it work.’” However, Sampson was convinced by festival Co-Founder Seth Berger, who is also the former CEO and co-founder of And1, that there was a plan to make the event compliant, but tells Libit he still wasn’t sure he wanted to make the Cougars’ schedule more difficult than it already was. “My ideal [way] of balancing our schedule was not to add Alabama, Rutgers and Notre Dame. I am not sure I would have done that except for the NIL thing and the consistency of it, where it is every year. An opportunity to be in this tournament to get the money they are talking about? You are crazy not to take it.” Lots more, including this from Sampson about the late scheduling: “You don’t work on your MTE schedule in the middle of August. But this deal, for NIL purposes, for being able to go through an avenue that doesn’t require donor participation, where you don’t have to tax your fan base, we have to do things like this. Sometimes you have to pay your own bills.” (link)

NIL Today, continued…
+ Notre Dame announces the launch of RALLY, a “collective and lifestyle agency for the next iteration of collegiate athletics dedicated to creating meaningful and market-based [NIL] opportunities for Notre Dame student-athletes.” Fighting Irish AD Pete Bevacqua: “We couldn’t be more excited for the creation of RALLY, a new collective formed to create commercial name, image and likeness opportunities for our Notre Dame student-athletes. As we navigate the new landscape of college athletics, our collaboration with RALLY will set our student-athletes and athletics programs up for success for years to come.” (link)
+ Basepath has updated its General Manager platform. Co-Founder/CEO Thomas Thomas Jr.: “These updates are a direct response to the real-world challenges athletic departments face today. Our partners have given us feedback, and we’ve responded with tools that improve efficiency and provide a clearer picture of how teams can build for success, both on the field and financially. With these latest enhancements to our GM tool, we’re providing athletic departments with even more precision and control in managing their NIL operations.” (link)
+ The Arkansas Edge collective is partnering with Community Auctions, an Arkansas-based provider of handmade sports and entertainment memorabilia that benefits local nonprofit organizations, to host at least 50 rotating table auctions in restaurants, hotels, and other businesses across Arkansas. A significant portion of the proceeds from these live auction tables will be shared with Arkansas Edge monthly. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes that AAC schools who are weighing interest from the Pac-12 face a potential exit cost of nearly $27.5M. “The precedent for the AAC negotiated exit fee for SMU’s departure with less than 27 months notice is $25M, which the league would expect from any potential departing schools. There’s also a revenue loss of at least $2.5M that pushes the total to $27.5M.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken on the week ahead for the Pac-12: “Mountain West trying to lock down commitments from current members. Pac-12 operating on two tracks (with and without AAC schools). Huge AAC exit fees are a real obstacle. Memphis, which some consider the linchpin of Pac-12 expansion plans, is asking for a whole lot in negotiations. Memphis exploring some football-only scenarios. Memphis may or may not be overplaying its hand depending on who you talk to. One person close to negotiations characterized the Pac-12’s AAC raid as a 50/50 chance of success. Pac-12 not having any real numbers other than a spreadsheet from Navigate is an impediment. Pac-12 may need to go to the marketplace with escalators for adding certain schools.” (link)
|
CBS’ Dennis Dodd adds: “There was chatter over the weekend that the Mountain West was urging its members to sign a grant of rights. CBS Sports could not confirm that information, and there was skepticism about such a move among industry sources because the current Mountain West contract runs out July 1, 2026. Given that, sources questioned the point of signing a grant of rights for 21 months.” Per one source: “If I were a school in the league I wouldn't sign it. They don't need a grant of rights right now. I wouldn't sign a grant of rights until I know who is going to be in the league." If AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti can convince Air Force and UNLV to join the league, Dodd notes the AAC “might look more desirable for Memphis and Tulane to stay put.” Also from Dodd: “The amount of media revenue being mentioned for Pac-12 schools is $10M to $15M per year. Those media rights numbers have to be considered preliminary because the Pac-12 doesn't have a TV deal yet. … If the Mountain West stays together it would have to add members from the bottom of FBS (New Mexico State, UTEP) and possibly upper tiers of FCS (Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, South Dakota). The Power 4 conferences can't be pleased if FBS (currently with 134 schools) continues to grow. CBS Sports was able to confirm UTEP and New Mexico State have not been contacted by the Mountain West as of Saturday.” (link)

NBC’s Nicole Auerbach: “As always with realignment, there’s a fear of inaction. Schools worry about being left behind when others jump. But my sense from sources is that the AAC schools are being patient and deliberate – and talking to each other. They’re weighing the risks. There’s a great deal of skepticism within the industry about the Pac-12/its consultant projecting $10-15M per school in a media rights deal that doesn’t exist yet. And the AAC exit fees would be significant – who pays them? So, we’ll see.” (link)

LSU AD Scott Woodward joined the Paul Finebaum Show last week and emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment during this tumultuous period in college sports. “I’m not going to complain and piss and moan and all that stuff. It is what it is. My counterparts do a lot of pissing and moaning, and I don’t. And it's like we're going to do it and we're going to come in and in that situation we know that things are going to change radically and drastically in a very fast fashion in this information age. And we just have to be ready for it and I think we've done a very good job of doing that here. … Enjoy your fate. Your fate can be bad sometimes, but when it’s good and you have goodwill built up, you know there's going to be better days and that's what I always do, whether it's losing your opening game and then you know coming back on a tough road game last week. I mean it's part of what you do and why you do it.” Woodward takes that same approach with the uncertainty around the House settlement, telling Finebaum: “I don't want to give you a bunch of hyperbole or cliches, but they're so true, like, just go do it. It is what it is. I don't know what the settlement’s going to be when it comes out in this antitrust case, but I have an idea that I think is going to be and I'm preparing for it. … There’s opportunity in chaos, and I love this opportunity.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams chronicles James Madison’s evolution from a women’s teaching college to the “latest disruptor in college sports.” Former Dukes AD Jeff Bourne says athletics “was very much a university commitment. I was told when I was hired it would be a long road and it won’t be easy, but they wanted that future for the program.” Former Football HC Mickey Matthews adds: “We had all the ingredients: Beautiful campus, great school, the marching band was terrific. We just needed to put it all together. I was convinced when I took the job that James Madison did not know what it was sitting on.” Williams notes that over the past decade, JMU has had an average annual budget of $52.6M, with student fees contributing an average of $41.3M per year. “That safety net allowed JMU to grow its athletics programs patiently and deliberately.” Interim President Charlie King acknowledges that “our fees are on the higher end, and we do get some criticism for that. But we make no apologies for it, either. I bet a whole lot of other schools wish they could be where we are athletically.” The move to the Sun Belt and a state law capping student fees for athletics mean the Dukes will rely less on the students moving forward, and AD Matt Roan says: “The onus is on us to continue communicating why the support we get from the institution and our students is a good investment. The whole front-porch metaphor: Athletics do shine a light on this institution.” Looking toward the future, Roan says of his mandate: “‘Don’t mess it up’ was my top priority. And it was more colorful than that.” More. (link)

UNC Wilmington Michael Oblinger joins the 1on1 with the Jon Evans podcast and talks about his visit to campus prior to taking the job: “I kind of had to dress as a civilian, had a hat on, kind of just incognito, kind of moving around a little bit through Trask. One, I wanted to experience it. But, two, I knew if I was going to get hired, I wouldn’t be able to have a game day experience until the following late October, early November. So again, I wanted to experience it, because if we were going to make some tweaks and some changes, I wanted to spend all summer doing that versus doing it on the fly when we were getting going.” Oblinger says of the transfer portal: “Our coaches that have leaned in are seeing success. You know traditional people, when they think about the amateur model, when they think about college sports and someone being here four to five years, unfortunately that’s not the case anymore. But ultimately for us we need to lean into it.” While the Seahawks continue to plan for the future, Oblinger points out that “we’re working on providing as much value as we possibly can. What I mean by that is, we’re not the most important thing here at UNCW. I know that. We are an academic institution. But we’re the front porch, and really a way for us to engage the community, to help recruit students, for people to understand what it’s like to be involved with UNCW from a branding standpoint, from an enrollment standpoint. We play a huge role in all that, and that’s something that I take a lot of pride in. … We have a responsibility to make sure that the front porch is clean, the front porch is painted, the front porch is inviting. Those are all things that we take very, very seriously.” (link)

The Competition Oversight Committee and Student-Athlete Experience Committee introduced legislation into the October 2024 legislative cycle to merge the two with the goal of streamlining the “distinct oversight for the Division I and National Collegiate Championship sports other than football and men’s and women’s basketball and create an efficient system in which these sports receive support for the entire sport experience.” The new committee would be a standing council committee called the DI Sports Oversight Committee (SOC) and oversee regulatory matters for baseball, bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, fencing, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, beach volleyball, men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s water polo and men’s and women’s wrestling. The committee members discussed a proposed subcommittee structure with sport groupings to support the number of sports and breadth of duties of the new committee. The committee members noted sport groupings should account for a sport’s level of visibility and growth potential (e.g., media rights, broadcast viewership, and fan attendance), sport sponsorship level, definition as a DI or National Collegiate sport and needs to establish or sustain the sport experience. Additionally, the sport groupings should balance team or individual sport designation and playing season. The committee members noted the sport groupings can be monitored and adjusted based on changes to the factors. More from the meeting. (link)
