UConn’s Fifth…
+ Huskies HC Hurley: “Obviously, a dream come true for all of us. It was a part of the program -- we sold the vision. I sold the vision to (Athletic Director) David Benedict and President Herbst and President Radanka and the university that I could put together a special group of people, coaching staff, unbelievable players like this. So it feels great to come through on promises made by me to all the great people of Connecticut and then with these guys. This was our vision. This was our dream. This is what we talked about when we recruited these guys, that we could get together and do something big like this. [...] I'm just mostly proud of the way we've done it and with the type of people that we've done it, the way we recruit young players, develop young players. We do it without cheating. We do it without lying.” (link)
+ Jim Nantz signed off after 32 years of calling the Final Four: “Everybody has a story. Everybody has a story to tell. Just try to tell that story, and be kind. Let me say one more thing. To everybody in college basketball, my family and all the viewers, thank you for being my friend.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Wilner on San Diego State’s historic run: “The Aztecs aren’t any more qualified for Pac-12 membership having reached the title game than if they had lost in the Sweet 16 or Elite Eight. They were already qualified. But the optics around expansion have changed with their charge to the finale. The momentum and the mood have changed. Here are the Aztecs, a gift horse on a silver platter carried down a gilded chimney on Christmas Eve. Not even the Pac-12 presidents can turn down that present, right? [...] A source told the Hotline recently that an even number of schools was the preferred outcome of the expansion decision. So anything that strengthens SDSU’s case for membership seemingly benefits a second school. In that regard, SMU stands as a potential winner from the Aztecs’ romp through the NCAAs.” (link)

Sunday’s LSU-Iowa Women’s Basketball title tilt drew 9.9M viewers to ABC, making it the most-watched NCAA WBB Tournament game on record and representing a YoY increase of 103%. The matchup peaked at 12.6M viewers. (link); SBJ’s Karp with additional context: “Beat UConn-Gonzaga men's NCAA Elite 8 game on TBS (8M). Beat Daytona 500 on Fox (8.2M). JUST short of the 10.2M for the Penn State-Utah Rose Bowl on ESPN.” (link); The Athletic’s Mandel with more context: “That’s more than last season’s: Sugar, Orange and Cotton Bowls; Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC title games; Notre Dame-USC; LSU-Alabama; Ohio State-Penn State; and Alabama-Texas A&M primetime on CBS.” (link)

Utah State Interim AD Bovee says the interim tag “hasn’t seemed to affect any conversations I’m having” related to the MBB HC search but adds: “I’ve had a few agents ask [about my status] already. But no candidates that I’ve talked to have been asking about it. I mean, it’s perceived to be more of an issue than I think it really is.” Ultimately, Bovee believes it doesn’t really matter if he’s named permanent AD or not, telling The Salt Lake Tribune’s Reynolds: “I think it needs to be about the university and our culture here. And we should be able to get that through. It needs to stay all about Utah State and what we need here. I’m just the placeholder in this seat.” More. (link)

Memphis AD Veatch declines to go into specifics about whether the Tigers have had conversations with the Big 12 or any other Power 5 conferences but says: “I would share that we’re very engaged and very well-positioned in all the right places. So, all the background work, and all the positioning that, you know, our folks would want us to be doing, has happened. And we feel good about where we’re at in that landscape.” The Daily Memphian’s Buckley goes on to submit that for Memphis to get the P5 call-up, the university “must extend more institutional support to the athletic department, expand the budget and accept that making more means — responsibly — spending more.” Lots more. In the third and final installment of a retrospective on Oklahoma AD Castiglione’s 25 years at OU, Castiglione affirms to Tulsa World’s Haisten that “absolutely, yes,” he plans to remain in the role through the Sooners’ first few years in the SEC. “A part of leadership for me is to continue to build Oklahoma’s upward trajectory and keep it going up. At some point, it will be proper for me to hand it off to the next person. If you look back over the entire history over college athletics, there’s never been a period of change, disruption and chaos like we have now. As much as we think we’ve seen all of the factors causing disruption — we haven’t. We’ve got to be prepared, and are, to navigate this. Not just with the idea that we’re going to get through it, but how are we going to be successful as we go through it? That’s where I see our best work being done – positioning Oklahoma for success down the road.” (link)

+ Michigan OC Moore and DC Minter have agreed to three-year extensions. Both will earn $1.15M in 2023, $1.2M in 2024 and $1.25M in 2025. They can earn an additional $100K if they finish among the top two in the Big Ten and the top 10 in FBS in scoring, and $50K for each regular season win beyond the eighth. Football Scoop’s Barnett reports the buyout structures are different, however, as Moore would owe $1M if he leaves before the end of the 2024 season and $500K thereafter. Minter would owe $2M if he takes a college coordinator job before the end of next season, and $800K if he accepts an NFL coordinator post. The buyouts drop to $1.2M and $600K, respectively, between the end of the 2024 season and the conclusion of the contract. (link)

Action Network’s Rovell reports that LifeWallet, the publicly-traded company led by prominent Miami (FL) supporter Ruiz, is “in disarray. Amid million-dollar sponsorships for collegiate athletes, the company faces litigation from its original founder, missed a recent earnings call and has had its stock price fall so low that the Nasdaq may boot LifeWallet altogether.” Specifically, Rovell notes the stock opened last year at slightly above $10 per share but has dipped below $1 and remained there for the past two weeks. Furthermore, per Rovell, “Ruiz provided guidance that 2022 revenue would approach $1B. When the company first reported quarterly earnings, the numbers were paltry. Nine months of revenue yielded just $3.9M after projecting income of $992M. Operating losses were $118M. The company says the projected income will now come next year.” More. (link)

“Crying Northwestern Kid,” the young Northwestern fan who was immortalized as a meme six years ago during March Madness, has turned that viral experience into a successful Harvard admissions essay. John Phillips, the son of ACC Commissioner and then-Northwestern AD Jim Phillips, explains the moment taught him a lesson about empathy, noting the social media world can be a cruel place. “People online and in-person routed me with false stories and negative comments: I was spoiled, I was over-emotional, I was a sore loser. Not a single person who criticized me knew my backstory or my heart. … I was passionate because this team was family to me. But the internet didn't know this when they spread my crying reactions everywhere." With some time and distance, Phillips eventually realized that “this doesn't have to be a negative thing. This can be a positive thing, and I could really embrace it.” (link)

Texas A&M-Commerce has gone official with the news of hiring Florida State Senior Assoc. AD Curry as its new AD. Curry: “The vision, alignment and commitment from President Rudin and the university leadership team to pursue championships and develop a first-class student-athlete experience are undeniable. This is an exciting time to be a Lion, and I look forward to engaging all our supporters and university stakeholders as we embrace this transformative opportunity together.” (link)

NCAA President Baker sounds off on a number of topics, including working with Congress to come up with an NIL solution, Baker says: “We’ve been talking to Republicans and Democrats. I think, based on those conversations, the feds are pretty serious about doing something, and I’m encouraged by that. If you want to have a national standard for how NIL works, it’s going to be very hard to do that without federal legislation.” On the transfer portal: “The transfer rule, one time free and the next time make a case for it, is the best way to handle this.” (link)

Summit League Commissioner Fenton indicates the conference is “nearing the end point” of media rights negotiations, and Inforum’s McNeely reports the league is hopeful it will have a national TV partner and a one-stop streaming partner, which may or may not be the same entity. Fenton: “National visibility, brand and fan affinity, revenue generation and finding ways to protect our local linear relationships that are important to a good portion of our schools. … We want to aggregate a platform where essentially all team sports, including some of the championships, are under one digital platform. So you as a fan of school XYZ can watch your team on the same digital platform whether they are at home or on the road." Meanwhile, McFeely points out the linear component “could include somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 regular-season games and, possibly, both the semifinals and championships of the men's and women's basketball tournaments.” (link)

Higher Education’s hiring challenges show no signs of easing, according to a survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education and the Huron Consulting Group, which found that 62% of respondents indicated that hiring for staff and administrative jobs during January, February, and March had been more difficult than it was in 2022. Meanwhile, 32% said it had been about the same and just a quarter of respondents thought that hiring would be easier in 2023 than in 2022. To try and combat the trend, colleges and universities are raising salaries. Median pay for employees increased as much as 5.3% for staff members. Administrators and professionals saw 4.5% and 4.4% median raises, respectively, while tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty members got median bumps of 2.9% and 3.2%. The problem is that these increases are failing to keep up with inflation, which sits at 7.1%. (link)

Sales of LSU WBB championship merchandise are up over 100% vs. South Carolina’s total last year, according to Fanatics. Top-selling products from LSU include the Nike locker room T-shirt and hat worn by the players after the game as well as the Blue84 bracket T-shirt. (link); Front Office Sports observes: “In July, LSU Women’s Basketball hired Jennifer Roberts for a role dedicated to NIL — Director of Player Personnel & Influence. Last night, staff had players' phones ready for the celebration. Since, every player has posted to nearly every platform they have.” (link)

With as many as two years left as a Hawkeye, Iowa WBB student-athlete Clark’s impact on the game is yet to be fully realized, according to USA Today’s Schnell. After yesterday’s national championship loss, Clark acknowledged that, saying: “I want my legacy to be the impact I have on young kids and the people of Iowa. I was that young girl (once). All you have to do is dream, and you can be in moments like this.” Hawkeyes HC Bluder added: “That’s what our whole team is about: They know they’re role models, they relish it. And not just (role models) for young kids either — this team has brightened the lives of so many people of all ages.” Clark’s opponents also acknowledge Clark’s ability. LSU student-athlete Morris, who drew the assignment of guarding Clark yesterday, said Clark is “changing the game,” and Tigers HC Mulkey calling her a “generational talent.” (link)

Notable for the Hawai’i AD search: UH President Lassner is fighting to keep $24M in the university budget that disappears July 1 and tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Nakaso: “It doesn’t help to have three very powerful senators who have expressed their antipathy to my leadership in the primary decision-making positions for the university’s budget.” State Senator Dela Cruz (D, Mililani-Wahiawa-Whitmore Village), who chairs the Senate Ways and Means Committee and has been critical of Lassner in recent months, made no mention of a specific $24M being extended to UH when highlighting the committee’s state budget proposal but said there remains time in the legislative session for Lassner and UH to lobby for the $24M they think is missing. “There’s still bills in play. If there’s bills when he can add an appropriation, he can still ask.” (link)

The American Gaming Association projects that 68M Americans will have wagered $1.5B on the NCAA MBB Tournament by the time tonight’s national championship concludes, and MassLive’s Vautour notes that ADs across the country “will cross their fingers and hope that athletes for their teams and their schools aren’t included in those numbers.” UMass AD Bamford expects to spend $10K to 20K in enhanced education and preparation for the school’s athletes and staff, including bringing in an FBI agent and utilizing the NFL’s education program. Bamford also reveals that several betting sites have reached out to ask about advertising. “Draft Kings has been hammering us trying to infiltrate our campus. … I’m not comfortable with it just yet and as an institution, we might never get comfortable with it.” (link)

NC State is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit from an unidentified former student-athlete who claims he was sexually abused by the school’s former sports medicine director during treatment in 2015. The university argues it never knew about the alleged abuse regarding this student-athlete, who is going by John Doe, before the suit was filed. N.C. State also argues that Doe waited too long to file suit. Doe was the second student-athlete to file a suit against the former sports medicine director, with former men’s soccer student-athlete Locke filing the first suit in August of last year. (link)

During BYU’s spring scrimmage and alumni game on Friday, 13 Cougar student-athletes wore T-shirts that featured a QR code directing fans to subscribe to CougConnect. While that in itself isn’t necessarily new, the CougConnect Director Brandon explains that what is novel is that 10% of the generated from the QR code creates a monthly payment for the specific player – in perpetuity. “Essentially, anyone who uses the QR code from the player’s shirt to join CougConnect will also create a royalty for that player that will be paid to them monthly – even beyond their time here as a football player. As far as we know, it’s the first NIL deal ever to pay players in perpetuity. It’s a big deal. We’re planning on taking the deal teamwide in the coming weeks.” (link)

As ticketing executives across Major League Baseball note that group sales have been particularly difficult to reignite after the pandemic, SBJ’s Bacharach points out that “it is becoming increasingly difficult to convince fans to shell out for an expensive ticket package when cheaper options are available on the secondary market at a fraction of the commitment.” Chicago Cubs SVP of Ticketing Vennum: “With secondary marketplaces really ubiquitous and tickets very easily exchangeable, I think it’s incumbent on the clubs to show their fans why there’s value in being a season-ticket holder instead of them just going out and buying the one or two games they want to go to in a given season.” For the Cubs, that meant reducing season ticket prices by an averages of 5% because “we thought was important to add some value back to the investment that they make, both with their money and their time with the club,” Vennum adds. (link)

One strategy the New York Mets are employing to increase attendance is by tapping into the 600K college students who live in the greater NYC area. Mets SVP of Ticketing and Premium Experience Bye notes that in-house research showed there was “no connection between that demographic and Citi Field” and hopes $15 tickets will change that.” Detroit Tigers SVP of Ticket Sales and Service Schiavi cautions, however, that simply lowering prices isn’t insufficient if you’re not also improving what fans get in return. “Every time we roll out a ticket package, our best seats sell the most. And so that tells me price isn’t necessarily the issue for us. People want to go to the game, get closer to the action and have a great experience.” (link)
|
Yet another trend among Major League Baseball teams looking to increase attendance is designing spaces where watching the game is almost optional. SBJ’s Bacharach: “For $20 per game this season, fans can purchase a general admission ticket to [the Toronto Blue Jays’] Rogers Centre, including access to all five new outfield neighborhoods that each offer a different experience. … Fans can catch live music. They can grab food truck-style bites at a park within the ballpark. They can play retro arcade games. And, yes, they can also watch a Major League Baseball game if they’d like.” The Atlanta Braves, meanwhile, have designed a new space for kids that will allow fans to meet and interact with the Braves mascot, make signs, write letters and more. For more fans who are more game-oriented, Bacharach notes teams have invested in bigger, flashier scoreboards, with the Mets, Phillies, Twins and Padres each upgrading theirs in the offseason. (link)
