Action Network’s Brett McMurphy points to UNLV & Utah State as “top expansion targets” for the Pac-12, though he also notes the league is also considering “a combination of Memphis, USF, Tulane and UTSA.” Why UNLV & Utah State? Per a source: “...the athletics and university leadership at both universities have a synergy with the new Pac-12 makeup.” (link)

Lincy Institute Fellow/former UNLV President Len Jessup contends the “One Nevada” ethos which tethers UNLV to Nevada is “holding UNLV back from achieving its natural, undeniable and deserved future” and points out that several neighboring states have multiple DI schools in different conferences, including Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and New Mexico. Jessup also points out that “Las Vegas is the 29th-largest metro and the 40th-largest media market in the United States, while Reno is the 103rd-largest metro and the 102nd-largest media market. Because Las Vegas is easier to fly into and out of throughout the year, it is attractive to other collegiate teams and conferences, as evidenced by the success of the recent Vegas Kickoff Classic featuring USC and LSU, as well as the many Pac-12 league championships held here.” Jessup continues: “The decision to constrain the fate of UNLV athletics hurts the prospects not only of the institution but also of the individual athletes and their ability to leverage their own opportunities for the future. With the changes to NIL in particular, allowing student-athletes to make money from their personal brand, conferences and their prestige becomes even more important to college athletes.” In refutation to those who argue the move is cost-prohibitive, Jessup writes: “There would be some legacy Pac-12 money that could be brought to bear to help UNLV pay for its ‘out’ clause upon leaving the Mountain West. This is also likely something that would be very attractive to UNLV athletics boosters as a campaign to raise funding to help UNLV make the move to the Pac-12.” More. (link)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini on the professionalization of roles within sport programs with the evolution of NIL & potential revenue-sharing: “We’re studying a lot of scenarios across many of our sports because right now, you think about the life of a college coach in any sport, you’ve got to wake up in the morning and determine whether you are putting your energy into coaching the team you have or recruiting the team that you need. We know coaches, they work around the clock, but there are only 24 hours in a day. As the access to talent and access to information becomes more and more important, I do think you’ll start to see more of a specialization into scouting and roster management, as opposed to coaching and player development. And that’s obviously a very tried-and-true model in professional sports. [...] I think as there’s just more at stake in college sports, now more than ever, there is some merit to having a group of your sports staff that can really be focused on future roster composition while the current coaches are developing the talent that needs to win now.” (link)

North Dakota AD Bill Chaves notes the new Albrecht Field (softball) will be 100% finished by the time of its grand opening and notes of the grandstand and spectator areas: “You can certainly sit behind home plate, but the area surrounding the field from third base to the outfield is incredibly fan-friendly. In fact, it’s angled so that everyone will be looking at home plate, and that’s on both the first and third base sides. Then, there will be a two-tiered ‘fan deck’ in left field for fans to stand and watch from that vantage. Beyond center field is a pet-friendly area, so there are different ways to view the game, depending on what people prefer.” Chaves says of the burgeoning Memorial Village that “I think it’s fair to say there’s an athletic district coming together on the outskirts of campus, which I think is the right place for it. The heart of campus is the academic buildings, but there’s so much more to a flagship university. For us to have this kind of area for athletics is both a fun thing and strategic. It will bode well for us now and in the future, and it has come together nicely.” Chaves also says the Nodak Insurance Company Sports Performance Center is on track to be finished by January. The ground level will include the locker rooms for track and field and softball teams, and there will also be an office for the person on staff who will be running the facility. When this project really started, things were happening below grade for a while, so it might not have looked like much was happening until the walls went up. Now, work is underway to make the indoors complete.” More from Chaves. (link)

"Our mission is to develop champions with integrity and our vision is to become one of the top five Division I athletic programs in Greater New England. Everything that we're doing is really centered around those two things." That's Maine AD Jude Killy in conversation with Collegiate Sports Associates’ Steph Garcia Cichosz as he reflects on his tenure as a first-time AD. Killy dives into the evolution of his strategic thinking, specifically around facility use and enhancement; discusses the importance of alignment and visibility for athletics with campus and community partners; and shares insight into why the opportunity at Maine drew him away from his hometown of Oxford, Ohio. Killy says of the evolution of his strategic thinking: “I think you have to force yourself a little bit, certainly coming from having been a deputy and chief of staff when you're really handling those day-to-day roles. That’s my sweet spot, I love that part of it, checking things off my list…but I think it's really challenging yourself to [say], ‘Hey, how does this fit into the bigger picture? How does this fit into the puzzle?’ When I was in the deputy role I think I looked at that from just what that meant for the athletic department, and now I'm trying to take the same approach but look at how does it fit into the greater good of the university?” More on Connect. TCU Football HC Sonny Dykes was ejected from yesterday’s kick against SMU after receiving consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties to open the second half. His frustration came from a holding penalty on the opening kickoff that negated a 93 yard TD return. The Horned Frogs’ next play was a 22-yard gain, but Dykes was still letting the officials know he didn’t agree with the previous call, and earned him a second penalty. Dykes after the game: “That’s my responsibility to make sure that never happens. 100 percent my fault.” (link)

Gonzaga and Baylor are in the final stages of an agreement to open the college basketball season on November 4, according to CBS’ Matt Norlander, who notes the “presumptive preseason top 10 teams will meet at Spokane Arena in downtown Spokane, Washington, as opposed to Gonzaga's on-campus venue, the McCarthey Athletic Center.” Since it’s taking place off-campus, Norlander reports the game “will also be used to raise six-figure NIL money for both programs, according to sources.” Tip time and network are still TBD. New on Connect: Boise State Senior Associate Athletics Director of External Affairs Cody Gougler joins Kristen Eargle for this week’s episode of The Career Hustle. Gougler discusses his myriad responsibilities in Boise, where he plays a role in fundraising, ticketing, marketing, business development and revenue innovation, NIL, communications and content creation efforts. Gougler credits his time working at Air Force with helping to shape his perspective, explaining: “Being around incredible people in military leadership helped to shape my mentality of being on-time, disciplined, doing everything that you do with integrity in your heart, and serving others before yourself. I’m so grateful for being in that moment at that part of my life while I was learning the language of college athletics.” Gougler on the importance of culture fit when hiring: “I think that we’re all pursuing this culture where people want to be…at Boise State, they enjoy being at Boise State and they can be authentically themselves with their guard down, be vulnerable and go achieve greatness. And if you bring someone in that perhaps is not able to fit within that culture, that can really set you off in a particular area of your department. … And this is not a likeability thing between myself and the perspective whoever we’re talking to. This is about our team. How is this individual going to fit in with everybody else.” Full Q&A. (link)

MoffettNathanson Co-Founder Michael Nathanson tells The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand he believes Apple doesn’t know what it wants to do in sports yet because “they’re not scaled at Apple TV+ and they’re not really a competitor in advertising. Their MLS deal and their baseball deal really doesn't move the needle, so I think they're on the outside looking in. … They’re not someone who's going to be a near-term bidder.” Nathanson also notes that streaming “may not be a great business if it was just based on scripted content and the need to continually reinvest in a scripted content flywheel. Perhaps the pivot we’re seeing is a realization that Amazon needs sports, Comcast needs sports, that you need sports year in, year out because it provides a hedge to the risk associated with scripted content. That’s maybe what we're living through right now – acknowledgment that the model needs more sports in order to sustain an audience throughout a season and that we're pretty much in the beginning of that pivot in strategy.” Marchand expects the injunction keeping Venu from getting off the ground will be lifted “in the next month or two” and explains: “Do I know 100%? No…but I do think it’s going to be overturned – or, at least, there’s confidence it’s going to be overturned.” Nathanson goes on to call Disney’s ESPN strategy “baffling” because he’s always believed ESPN OTT “satisfies a very small slice of consumers. … ESPN is part of my sports viewing repertoire. It’s not the definitive and end-all of it, but it's part of what I do. And launching an over-the-top service as a sports fan doesn't satisfy all my needs. It needs to be launched in concert with other products. We always believed that Hulu Live, which has other programmers, was a better way to build a skinnier sports bundle than trying to go ESPN over the top.” Full podcast. (link)

Private Equity in Sports…
+ The consortium of private equity funds headed by NFL Hall of Famer Curtis Martin will be permitted to invest in up to 12 teams, twice as many as the six-per-fund limit created for Arctos Partners, Ares Management and Sixth Street, according to SBJ’s Ben Fischer, who adds: “Sources said the higher limits reflect the vastly larger resources held collectively by the group of Blackstone, Carlyle, CVC, Dynasty Equity and Ludis. … The different rules shine a light on the competitive dynamics at play as funds and teams jockey for the best terms for equity sales, with at least some owners hoping to close deals before the end of the calendar year. For now, the supply of private equity capital created by the new NFL policy appears to far exceed demand. Over the long term, the higher limit for the consortium means that as many as 30 (instead of 24 as initially believed) teams could take on private equity investors without a policy change.” (link)
+ SURJ Sports Investment, which is owned by Saudi Arabia’s $925B Public Investment Fund has entered the sale process for EuroLeague, according to Financial Times’ Ivan Levingston and Samuel Agini, who report EuroLeague, Europe’s top basketball competition, is seeking to sell a minority stake at a €1B valuation. For more context, they add: “EuroLeague says its viewer numbers are growing, but it is far overshadowed by the NBA in global audience and recognition. EuroLeague’s television audience increased 27% year on year in the 2023-24 season, bolstered by rises in Turkey, Serbia, Greece, Spain, Lithuania and Italy. User numbers for its online viewing platform rose 46% to 85,000.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Are corporate partnerships always about advertising exposure?
Jazmin Elliott, Director of Corporate Sponsorships and Marketing at Norfolk State athletics, discusses her thought process when looking for companies to partner with the department. She finds areas of alignment between the company and the university, that go beyond just advertising exposure.
• national brands don't need Norfolk State for exposure
• impactful relationships between a company and student-athletes are always top of mind
• "In business and personal relationships, when you make their ROI just as important as your ROI, people will try their best to help you succeed."
Elliott gives an example of a synergistic relationship with a corporate partner where both parties value a lot more than just the transaction of money. Her overarching philosophy is that people should always be a part of the formula for maximizing return on investment. 🎧 on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Pittsburgh is available, for those looking to lead the Panthers. Florida Gulf Coast AD Colin Hargis: “The D1.dossier was a great resource for me during my process with FGCU. It provided me with a comprehensive overview of the department and university while also presenting granular information in many areas. The time saved by utilizing the dossier was invaluable. I would highly recommend a D1.dossier subscription to any administrator considering or entering a search process.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports Pac-12 leaders met yesterday with this from an unnamed source: “Getting close to the next steps of nailing things down.” Canzano says Memphis continues to be a “top target” with USF, Tulane, UTSA & UNLV also in the mix. One source says of the Rebels: “UNLV is the biggest puzzle out there. The TV ratings are not great, but you’d get the buzz of Las Vegas.” More from sources: “We need eight. The intent isn’t just to add teams to add them. Is it a total of eight? Nine? 10? Ultimately that’s dependent on who else wants to be part of doing something epic. [...] How could Gonzaga not come up? Could it work? What would that look like? Those are the kinds of questions being asked right now.” On a potential timeline, an unnamed AD tells Canzano: “I can’t imagine it’s going to take long.” (link)

Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt joins Front Office Sports Today and says the 12-team College Football Playoff has “sparked a lot of conversations, one about non-conference scheduling philosophy, strength of schedule. When we were at 10 teams for so long as the Big 12 conference you played a round robin. So, you played every school every year. Now with 16 teams, nine conference games, we don't play everybody every year, so it has made us look at how we schedule from a conference perspective as well, on campus, what's our strategy to scheduling non-conference matchups? But at the end of the day we know if we win the Big 12 Conference, if we’re one of the top two programs in the Big 12 conference, we have a pathway to the College Football Playoff, and that’s what our goal is. I think it's going to be exciting for college football. I think it’s had the greatest regular season of any sport out there and, I think this 12-team playoff is going to just add to that.” Hocutt on what’s next in conference realignment: “At some point we have to think differently. We have to look out for the good of the whole and not individual and in our current system that's challenging because as an athletics director I am charged every day to grow and advance Texas Tech. Conference commissioners are charged with growing the revenue and serving their constituent group, their conference. The NCAA has very little to do with college football at this level, if anything. So, who is thinking for the good of the whole product of college football?” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello and Richard Johnson go about answering whether Florida AD Scott Stricklin’s job is safe and who the Gators will target to take over as Football HC upon parting ways with Billy Napier, whose departure appears increasingly inevitable. In fact, Marcello & Johnson report that “behind the scenes, the gears are already in motion for a potential change, and there is more alignment among administrators than message board rumors tend to say. Stricklin, who is facing criticism of his own after decisions to hire Dan Mullen and then Napier, has been informed the decision whether to fire Napier is his to make. In that scenario, Stricklin will also be tasked with searching for a new coach, sources familiar with the discussions at Florida told CBS Sports this week. … Rumors of wholesale changes in the athletics department appear premature, sources tell CBS Sports, with communication between the president's office and Stricklin remaining open and positive. Napier, however, is the lone party on an island, fighting for survival.” Marcello & Johnson note that Stricklin has a positive reputation throughout the industry and within the halls of UF leadership, and one Power 4 AD offers: "He gets it. Nobody does more research than that guy.” Marcello & Johnson add that the “same AD pointed to the success rates of Foley and former Alabama AD Mal Moore, who made several hires that didn't pan out in football before or after landing national champions Urban Meyer and Nick Saban, respectively.” More. Baylor AD Mack Rhoades says Football HC Dave Aranda has “crushed it when you think about retention of players, staff [hirings], transfer portal, verbal commits right now for December of 2024. He’s done all of that exceptionally well. The fact that he is so deep into football has given him an edge. He’s grumpy; he’s got an edge. You’ve seen more emotion from him, and all those things are really positive.” Rhoades adds: “I’m proud of Dave; It’s really hard to juggle being a head coach and a defensive coordinator. When you think about the Utah game, plus the other two, what stands out for me is that our players are competing. They are fighting, and that’s really good to see. It is such an important part of the team's culture.” Despite coming off a 3-9 football season, the Bears have enjoyed large crowds at home games this season, with over 46K showing up for the matchup against Air Force, and Rhoades remarks: “Hats off to our fan engagement team. The entire athletic department is doing a better job of connecting with our fans. I thought it was a great atmosphere [against Air Force]. When you think about our first two home games, I’m really proud of our fans. They’ve been terrific. They’ve been loud and have shown up.” (link)
|
UNLV Football HC Barry Odom does not mince words when talking to his team about the makeup of its schedule, which includes three games against Power 4 opponents this season. Odom on handling the little things and improving week to week: “If you do that, the way that things are set up, it presents an opportunity to be in the 12-team Playoff. Why not be the voice of it? We’re aligned in what we hear, say, think and do — and here are the reasons why we practice the way we do, here’s the outcome that we’re trying to achieve.” Similarly, Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield believes every Group of 5 coach is using the hope of a Playoff spot as a motivator this season. Silverfield: “Anytime you sat down with a recruit, be it in January or spring or the summer, you could say, ‘Listen, if you come here, you have a true chance to go to the Playoff if we win this thing.’ You couldn’t say that in the past.” Northern Illinois HC Thomas Hammock believes many of the upsets by Group of 5 teams this season stem from the fact that they have veteran teams, which play as cohesive units, “You see those teams with all those high-profile freshmen who go and play a team with some seniors and juniors, and they lose. That’s what you’re seeing in college football.” More. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde posits that upsets over Power 4 schools by Northern Illinois, UNLV, Memphis and Toledo represent a “restoration of hope that college football success isn’t solely about who can spend their way to the biggest advantage. Or bankroll enough money to correct their egregious errors.” There is also “an additional benefit to toppling giants, beyond pocketing a seven-figure guarantee check and earning a week of celebration. Someone from the Group of 5 conferences is going to the College Football Playoff. Northern Illinois, Toledo, UNLV and Memphis have moved to the front of the pack chasing that new windfall.” MAC schools, Forde continues, are “particularly illustrative of how to build a competitive team without quick fixes. The basic tenets: target three-star prospects in your backyard; find a secondary niche in a talent-rich state; create a culture where your players want to stay and graduate.” Neither Toledo nor Northern Illinois are “flush with transfers down from power-conference schools, or up from the FCS ranks. They’re primarily built on high school recruiting, then keeping those players within the program. They develop and mature, and are ready to contribute as older veterans. … There might be an ever-expanding pool of money available for transfer players, but playing time is finite. There are only so many starting jobs, and everyone wants to get on the field as opposed to sitting on the sideline. The really big money is in the NFL, and the best way to get there is to put your skills on film—something that can be done at places like Toledo.” (link)

ESPN’s David Hale reacts: “This is the dilemma though: In a 1-off, yes, Cinderella still exists. But…non-P5s are 6-58 vs P5 so far, an .094 win%. Those wins are vs ND (true shocker), FSU, Vandy, Miss St and Houston (combined 2-8 vs FBS this year.). The trend line is pretty clear…2022-24, ie NIL/Portal era, G5s have a 14% win% vs P5. 2019-21, G5 beat P5 more than 25% of the time.” (link)

When it comes to media rights valuations, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is told by consultants and academics that “it isn’t just how many people watch a broadcast that’s important. It’s who is watching, how long are they watching, and what can we do with that data.” Gambling is the newest variable in the equation, and Brown posits that Hawaii is uniquely positioned to benefit. While UH’s time zone obviously limits the viewership pool, Brown asks: “But you know who does like to stay up and watch games that kickoff at midnight? Besides parents of small children, Reddit sickos, and professional scouts? Folks who like to gamble on college football. … There’s evidence to suggest that folks are betting, disproportionately, on games in that late night window. Data shared with me from one major gambling monitoring service suggested that roughly $160M was legally bet on Hawaii football games last season, just behind UNLV for the highest ‘team handle’ in the Mountain West. … $160M would also be more than some P4 programs.” As such, Brown points out there could be additional research done “to determine the possible value of gambling-oriented viewers to broadcast companies or ad partners. If somebody has money on a game, are they more likely to watch late into the 3rd quarter than somebody who is watching purely out of love for the home team?” Brown also suggests the Rainbow Warriors could use such data to leverage its location as a more “in-demand staging ground for neutral site or MTE events, so other teams can take advantage of the TV window (and also: being in Hawaii). Or perhaps some schools could elect to play a game every so often at midnight, even if they’re in the central or eastern time zones.” Lots more. (link)

Asked whether Georgia has lost out on some players in the transfer portal due to existing NIL rules, Bulldogs Football HC Kirby Smart says: “It’s all about what you have available, right? And some people are willing to spend beyond their ability to raise it. Like unfulfilled promises. We’re not going to have unfulfilled promises where guys reach back out and say, ‘They said they could do this, but they didn’t. They said they could do that and didn’t.’ We’ve lost some in those regards. I don’t know that it was an inability to do it. It was not stepping over our skis and putting our body too much out there and saying, ‘OK we’ve committed to do this’ and (then) can’t do it. It’s a hard world out there because you don’t really know what you can and can’t do. People make promises, and nobody has a bounty sitting out there that big where they can pay everybody that.” Smart also reiterated that it’s important that players choose schools for reasons beyond money and Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order will not change that. “It’s not like it’s going to be this open surplus. It’s just helping us be competitive with others. And I’m sure Georgia Tech feels the same way.” (link)

Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley believes student-athletes’ newfound freedoms via NIL and the transfer portal have been a long time coming but adds: “We just need more structure. We need more guardrails. We need more leadership. You can't have what's going on currently in our sport, which is total free agency all the time. There’s no sport that functions or operates like this, but college basketball, at least on the men’s side, there’s so much untapped potential with what March Madness brings to the table. It’s the second-most-watched sporting event in America every single year.” Hurley believes there needs to be contracts with players and notes it’s “not just good for the universities in terms of getting a commitment from the players themselves to stay and to not have so much transition on a yearly basis. Eventually that's not going to be good for the sport because college fans want players that are going to be with their program for a couple of years. They don’t want their teams to change every year. They won't tolerate that at some point as fans, but I do think [contracts] protect the players too because there's a lot of schools that promise more money from an NIL standpoint than they can deliver. … So I think there's a lot of protection for both sides.” (link)
