UNLV President Keith Whitfield & AD Erick Harper provide more context to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Adam Hill on conference realignment machinations over the past week-plus. Whitfield: “One of the things the athletic director really thought of is that because we’re doing so well, because we’re a linchpin in this whole process, and I think the success of either one of those two options that we were given, that he also wanted to say, ‘Hey, we need to make sure that we take care of some of our longer lasting relationships, income streams and such, for the community.’ And part of that is having the Thomas & Mack remain the place where we play the championship (basketball tournaments). I can tell you I’ve got some of my fellow presidents when they want to go someplace else, I say, ‘Man, there’s no better place better than to go to Thomas & Mack.’ So I think that it was an easy thing to negotiate. Although nothing that (Harper) had to do was easy. I think it was really easier because it is an outstanding place for us. It made sense because it connects to our community and it does have long-term financial implications as well. So that just hit on all cylinders.” Harper: “I just evaluated everything that I had squarely down the middle because there’s pros and cons both ways (Mountain West vs. Pac-12). So I didn’t want to be leaning one way or the other until I truly had all the information available from both sides to navigate through. And that was from phone calls with industry experts and high-level athletic directors, other commissioners, and all the different things that go into a decision like this was important for me to be completely open-minded to what’s going to end up being essentially the best (deal for UNLV and the community).” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown shoots down reports the Horizon League is considering a move down to Division II. Brown: “Folks at the campus and conference level at the horizon have strongly pushed back on this to me fwiw. If anything, I’ve heard substantially more interest among DII programs that would like to be in the horizon league than from horizon programs looking to move to DII.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek addressed his recent comments regarding the need for more fans to donate with the Arkansas Edge collective. “I was asked a question about NIL and what I thought about it as an athletic director, and I think if you’ve followed me for seven years I’m nothing but honest. They asked me the question how I feel about NIL, and I think I responded it was awful. And it is awful. But as the athletic director at the University of Arkansas, it doesn’t mean that I don’t embrace NIL. Because we’re not putting that genie back in the bottle. It is here to stay.” Yurachek reiterated that he’s had to go to the same small circle of donors “for three consecutive years and ask for those six- and seven-figure gifts. What we’re trying to do is have more of a grassroots campaign across the state of Arkansas, where we can have some recurring income into our collective, Arkansas Edge.” Should the House settlement gain approval, Yurachek noted that “our hope is that the internal revenue-sharing will take the place of the collectives. It will never take the place of regular NIL. That will always still be there. We’ve got to get rid of this middle section, the collectives, OK?” Asked whether he believes collectives eventually will disappear, Yurachek remarked: “It’s going to take some really strong presidents and chancellors and athletic directors to hold their coaches accountable to that going away.” With Bud Walton Arena in need of some deferred maintenance, Yurachek explained: “We need to let this NIL piece settle, and I can’t take on more debt service with our department of athletics budget. The arena renovation will happen at some point in the future, but it’s not as imminent as we had once thought.” (link)

“The days are long but when you’re driven by purpose… it’s fun,” Mississippi State AD Zac Selmon tells AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown as the two reflected on Selmon’s first year as an AD. Selmon also discusses the personal side of a career transition, including the impact the move had on his family and the importance of learning the nuances of a department’s local community. Selmon: “Train yourself if you want to be in [an AD] position so that when it does come it doesn’t feel so unnatural. … Having a network has been really helpful for all the transitions.” Selmon and Brown also talk about the value of storytelling, the reason Selmon calls his senior leadership team “entrepreneurs,” and why Selmon strives to make MSU the “most connected athletics department in the country.” Selmon: “The most connected team wins.” To proactively deal with burnout, MSU uses a “peace index,” and Selmon notes: “What area are you not at peace about? If it’s your purpose, for instance, then we can fix your purpose. Maybe it’s out of line.” The index examines “provision, health, you look at purpose, you look at place and you divide up and it gives you a peace score. We do it constantly as an executive team but also the goal is for each of our Executive team to do it with individuals.” More on ADU. (link)

The East Tennessee State football team was stranded on buses in Asheville for 14 hours because of the flooding from Hurricane Helene, with Quarterbacks Coach Tyler Dell texting Outkick’s Clay Travis: “Hey Clay, wild story here. We have been stranded on our buses outside of Asheville since 11AM today because of the flooding. We were headed to Charleston to play The Citadel tomorrow at 2PM, but are stuck and sleeping on the buses tonight in a parking lot. All roads in and out of the area are shut down. We can’t get to Charleston and can’t get back to Johnson City. No hotels with capacity or power and no food anywhere near. We haven’t had cell service all day and it’s still down throughout the entire area. We are hoping the game will get moved to Sunday, but as of right now, it’s a real possibility we could be sleeping on the buses tonight, driving to Charleston, and playing a game tomorrow.” (link); A post on X from Bucs HC Tre Lamb at 1 AM: “We are out of the flood trap. @ETSUFootball is beyond the flood/headed to Charleston. We arrive at 5AM. We were stranded for 14 hours. … we are on the way and ready to play @Citadel1842 whenever they decide.” As of D1.ticker publication time this morning, the game is still on as scheduled. (link) Because of Helene, the Davidson vs. Presbyterian football matchup, previously scheduled for today at Bailey Memorial Stadium in Clinton, will move to Davidson College Stadium tomorrow for a 5 pm ET kick. The Boise State volleyball team has forfeited its match against San José State. A statement from the Broncos: "Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San José State on Saturday, Sept. 28. Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State. The Broncos will next compete on Oct. 3 against Air Force." Idaho Governor Brad Little: “I applaud (Boise State) for working with the spirit of my Executive Order, the Defending Women’s Sports Act. … We need to ensure player safety for all of our female athletes and continue the fight for fairness in women’s sports.” San José State’s volleyball team has a transgender athlete on the roster, according to team member Blaire Fleming. Southern Utah also canceled a match against the Spartans earlier this season. (link)

SBJ’s Mollie Cahillane explores The CW’s path into live sports and points out it began when Nexstar Media Group acquired a controlling interest in October 2022 and “quickly began to shift its strategy.” CW President Dennis Miller: “It became very apparent that the young adult audience, that we liked so much previously, had migrated to binging and streamers. Trying to get an 18- to 34-year-old to pay attention on Wednesday at 8 was no longer a very smart strategy. There’s a lot of sentimental and romantic attachment to what The CW was, and I respect that and get that. But you’ve got to go where the customer is today.” Miller goes on to note that “college football is enormously valuable to us. … Being incumbent with the Pac-12 teams is a really good place to be. We’re getting to know each other, building relationships, working with their production teams, getting to know the athletic directors. We have more real estate than some of our peers in broadcast, because they’re so full, where they’ll relegate things to their streaming network or to their [ad-supported video on demand] service or to a lesser distributed cable network.” The CW now has 500 hours of sports, and Miller describes most of the deals as “second tier” to the main sport (WWE NXT versus Smackdown, for example) and adds: “We’ve got a lot of up-and-comers here. We’ve got to tell their stories, got to promote from one to the other and hopefully what we’ll see this quarter should be very revealing. Can we create a flywheel between all these sports?” (link)

Liberty Media/Liberty Global/Liberty Broadband Corporation Chairman/Warner Bros. Discovery Independent Director John Malone posited in a MoffettNathanson podcast that the big tech companies will eventually bid up sports rights to the point where traditional media companies will no longer be able to afford them. “Big Tech will end up eating everything—our industry and every other one—simply because they have such immense scale, immense economic power. Anything they want to get into, they’re going to be very hard to keep out of, because they can buy their way in.” When asked specifically about Netflix, Malone warned that the streamer could overprice its offering if it pays too much for sports, but he predicted that Netflix could be successful in sports if it can figure out an à la carte option. According to Newzoo’s August PC & Console Engagement & Revenue Rankings, EA Sports College Football 25 debuted at 11th in engagement in July and moved up to eighth in August on PlayStation and from sixth to fifth on Xbox. Meanwhile, Madden NFL 25 debuted at No. 1 in revenue on Xbox and No. 2 on PlayStation, a month after EA Sports College Football 25 launched at No. 1 on both in July (it dropped in August to No. 3 on Xbox and No. 4 on PlayStation). But Newzoo worries that the “two games are seemingly vying for a similar target audience and are maintaining high ranks in terms of total revenues, so it’ll be interesting to see how their dual dynamic plays out over the coming months, especially with EA Sports FC 25 and NBA 2K25 entering the fray.” (link)

A government investigation into last year’s FAFSA rollout found that Education Department officials failed to properly test and prepare the form and launched it despite signs that it was not ready for wide release, according to Inside Higher Ed’s Liam Knox. For example, Knox explains the Government Accountability Office (GAO) “found that as early as August 2022, FSA knew, or at least anticipated, that the 2024–25 FAFSA release would have to be delayed. That month, the office began retooling its schedule for FAFSA processing, moving deadlines for contractors from October 2023—the form’s traditional, and at the time expected, release date—to December, yet they waited seven months to announce the delay publicly.” The GAO also found the department’s communication strategy to be inadequate, both for helping colleges understand the delays and for helping families navigate the form. Of the 5.4M calls the Education Department’s call center received during the first five months of the FAFSA rollout, 4M went unanswered. Ultimately, Knox explains the report’s findings “all point back to one key misstep: that the FSA moved forward with the rollout while most of the underlying processing system’s essential capabilities were unfinished. At the time of the form’s release, 18 of the 25 ‘key requirements’ for launch had not been met.’” More. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker writes on X: “We continue to see evidence of dysfunction in today’s NIL environment, including examples of promises made but not kept to student-athletes. Just as anyone that owns stock or buys a house is afforded basic consumer protections, it's clear that student-athletes entering NIL contracts should be too. That’s exactly why we provide student-athletes with a template contract and recommended, fair terms through our new NIL Assist platform. While we’d love to see these resources used to protect student-athletes in every NIL deal, it’s not something the NCAA has the authority to mandate. In the meantime, we’re continuing to advocate for Congress to create national NIL guidelines that will protect student-athletes from exploitation, including the use of standard contracts. (link)

The NCAA sent a letter to members regarding yesterday’s amended House settlement filing. It reads, in part: “The plaintiffs have been working collaboratively with NCAA counsel and conference defendant counsel on the content of [the] brief. The brief addresses the questions raised by the court in three key areas: how third-party [NIL] issues would be regulated; the ability to commit future student-athletes to the settlement structure for a period of 10 years; whether the lawyers for the plaintiffs met their ethical obligations by representing both a damages class and an injunctive class. … With this clarification and explanation of the proposed settlement, we believe preliminary approval should be granted.” (link)

Purdue Board of Trustees Chair Mike Berghoff tells GoldandBlack.com’s Alan Karpick that “we believe the House case and settlement are the best possible outcome for Purdue. We view it as finally bringing order to the process. We finally have a pathway that everyone in the conference can follow; if this passes – and there is work to do – it provides an equal amount of gunpowder for every athletic department. Because (at Purdue) we are in the middle, not the lower third, not the upper third when it comes to revenue.” On how the Boilermakers will find the money to share revenue with players, Berghoff says: “We’re pretty close, you know, in terms of revenue generation already, but there are some knobs that we will need to turn in order to meet the percentage of revenue share, and some of those are athletic expenses that the department has been burdened with for a long time and some of those expenses that they currently pay the university are probably better off and reasonably located in the University’s responsibility to pay.” Berghoff on having one board liaison to the athletics department: “You don’t want five and six board members sharing their advice with the athletic administration and the coaching. … We know what the obligation and responsibility is academically for a Purdue athlete that’s well understood, and it’s our expectations that are high on the academic side.” (link)

The Liberty-App State football game in Boone this weekend has been canceled due to Hurricane Helene. The game will not be made up, but Flames AD Ian McCaw says the school will try to find a 12th opponent. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy: “If Liberty wins CUSA, it would be in contention for a [College Football Playoff] bid & could be hurt if it only plays 11 regular season games.” (link, link) Samford at Furman scheduled for tomorrow has also been canceled. Florida A&M’s athletic facilities “appear to be in decent shape” after Hurricane Helene made landfall last night, according to Acting AD Michael Smith. FAMU will continue assessing the damage, and Smith says once that assessment is done, “we’ll be able to determine what the next steps are.” Rattlers Football HC James Colzie III says the team has the rest of the week off and will schedule practice once the facility assessment work is complete. Realignment Ramblings…
+ Northern Illinois has released the following statement concerning overtures from the Mountain West: “Conference realignment is a highly dynamic situation, and NIU appreciates the interest in our strong brand and proven commitment to the success of our student athletes. At this time, we have not received a formal offer to consider a change.” (link)
+ SBJ’s Austin Karp estimates a new Mountain West media rights deal would command “slightly more” than what the MAC currently receives and explains: “Who’s going to be left in the Mountain West? Because the Pac-12 has that lawsuit against the Mountain West, and if they succeed, that might allow some of those schools out of having to pay something. So maybe UNLV and Air Force change their mind. Maybe the Mountain West just folds. I wouldn’t be confident putting my cards with the Mountain West right now.” If Toledo were to join the Mountain West, its travel costs would increase significantly, as the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland notes the city is 659 miles closer to London than Honolulu. “A road trip to Hawaii would resemble playing a game in Munich, Germany.” Karp observes that ‘within the group of five, yeah, [Toledo has value]. I think it’s one of those schools that in the right situation could be in the [College Football Playoff] conversation just based on what they’ve done over the last 10, 15 years. I see no difference between a Toledo and a Utah State, even a Boise State. I mean, Boise State’s not what it was. So why can’t Toledo, especially if it stayed in the MAC and was the champion of the MAC, be that school.” (link)
+ In its defense of the Pac-12’s lawsuit concerning poaching penalties, the Mountain West will likely argue the “Pac-12—a sophisticated business actor—willingly accepted the terms that the MWC is imposing,” per Sportico’s Michael McCann. Regarding the complaint’s assertion that the Mountain West “forced” the Pac-12 to “unprecedented Poaching Penalty provisions,” McCann posits the Mountain West can counter that “even if the penalty provision is unfair or oppressive, and even if it was made at an especially exploitative moment, the Pac-12 still agreed to it. The Pac-12 is a multimillion-dollar entity advised by experienced business and legal professionals. This is not a situation where, say, an elderly person of limited means, knowledge and capacity was duped by a charlatan and there’s a viable case for unconscionability.” Furthermore, the Mountain West could argue the exit fees alone are “conclusively insufficient, given that five of the 12 schools are leaving for the Pac-12. … The MWC could assert the situation it now faces is exactly why it was worried about lending a helping hand to the Pac-12 and why a poaching penalty made business sense. By assisting a rival conference in its time of dire need, the MWC made it possible for that conference to regain its footing and then (MWC would argue) opportunistically undermine the MWC’s interests.” More from McCann. According to OregonLive’s Ryan Clarke, budget documents published by Oregon in the past week show projected FY25 expenses of nearly $162.8M “with the typical goal of equaling that number in projected revenues. That is up roughly 12.3% over the previous fiscal year — Oregon’s final in the Pac-12. Last year in FY24, Oregon expected to receive $39.15M from the NCAA and Pac-12 along with $21.37M from broadcast deals, sponsorships and royalties. Looking ahead to FY25, the Ducks project revenues of $54.04M (+38%) from the NCAA and Big Ten and $25.06 M (+17%) from broadcast deals, sponsorships and royalties” as half-share members of the B1G. Clarke also points out that “another major revenue difference for the Ducks in FY25 is a projected $37.5M in usage of Duck Athletic Fund gifts and contributions. That is down more than 16% from FY24 ($44.8 million).” An Oregon spokesperson emphasizes this figure reflects “how much we anticipate drawing from our gift accounts this year in support of athletics, not how much money we expect to actually raise in contributions.” On the expense side, Ducks AD Rob Mullens said in July that UO expects to spend roughly $4M more on travel this year, and Clarke points out that administrative expenses are set to go up by nearly $7M to a total of about $79M — 48.5% of the overall athletic budget. Additionally, per Clarke, “Oregon projects a more than $8M increase (+24.5%) in the overall operating budget for football in FY25, to about $41.6M. That makes up the majority of a men’s sports budget expected to increase by more than $9M, to a total of roughly $62.5M.” The women’s sports operating budget is around $21.3M. (link)

La Salle unveils its newly renovated basketball complex at John Glaser Arena with a celebration at the newly dedicated Tom Gola Plaza. John Glaser Arena will have a new audio and visual system, renovated air-conditioning, a hanging LED video board at midcourt and smaller LED boards in the corners, a new concession stand, and a section reserved for students behind the east baseline. Explorers AD Ashwin Puri: “We want to create a fun, engaging environment for kids so they choose to come here, have a great time, and then they graduate with fond memories and ultimately want to give back. That’s the goal. So we’re investing in the student experience, our retention efforts across the board, [John Glaser Arena] can help with all of that.” (link)
