CollegeAD indicates South Carolina will work with Funk & Associates on its AD search with a timeline of picking up speed later in the Fall. (link); Gamecocks Baseball HC Paul Mainieri on the exit of USC AD Ray Tanner: “I can’t lie, I was pretty shocked. I could see it in his face that he was getting kind of worn down by the job. Even at the time he hired me — he had hired four coaches in a week. [...] I did not anticipate that he would retire four months into my tenure here. [...] He’ll still be around, evidently. That’s what he keeps telling me, ‘Hey, I’m gonna have more time to spend with you now.’” (link)

Multiple reports have UTEP in deep discussions with the Mountain West. CBS’ Brandon Marcello notes: “UTEP would owe about $2 million to Conference USA in an exit fee.” (link, link)

Wyoming AD Tom Burman talks publicly for the first time about the latest round of realignment: “It’s been extremely stressful. Probably as stressful of a time as I’ve experienced as an athletics director. When Utah State bolted, I was surprised. I didn’t think that would be the situation that occurred. I guess, in all honesty, (I was) a little disappointed and a little angry, but you move on. It was extremely important for the University of Wyoming to have a landing spot. Whether that be in this league or a different league, that was critical. We are a unique entity, and we bring great value to the Mountain West conference — or any other conference out there — but you have to look a little deeper to find the value. It’s not always going to show up in data and metrics, and that’s a hard pitch sometimes to get across.” On the potential of adding current FCS members to the Mountain West: “They’re on the board. For me to speculate for where it’ll land would be inappropriate, but there are a few high-level FCS programs that are on the board. But other than that, that’s all I’ll say about it.” (link)

Sacramento State’s SAC12 Committee announces it’s raised an astounding $35M - in just 24 hours - for NIL purposes as the Hornets continue to position itself for a move up from FCS to the Pac-12. Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown puts the $35M in context: “$35 million would be a TON of NIL money even for a Texas or Ohio State, let alone a Big Sky team. I'm not sure if there's $35 million in NIL money across the entire FCS . [...] For some context, ~$35 million is roughly Sacramento State's annual budget right now. If there's actually that much corporate money out there, I'd argue there are uh, lots of other critical needs out there for Sac State beyond just NIL to make an FBS transition actually work.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner argues the Pac-12 needs to focus on adding Gonzaga before another football-playing institution: “So what’s next? Multiple sources have said every option is being explored with an emphasis on financial prudence. (The Pac-12 declined to engage in a bidding war over UNLV with the Mountain West, for example, and it wouldn’t offer Memphis more than $2.5 million to assist with the Tigers’ $25 million exit fee from the American.) Whether the next move comes in 24 hours or 24 days, the conference needs a win. And there’s only one school available that can offer a blowout victory. From here, it’s clear: Go get Gonzaga. Forget football for the moment. Forget the need for an eighth full-time member to meet NCAA requirements. Forget the missed opportunities and the lost narrative and the extended period of uncertainty. Go get Gonzaga. [...] Maybe the Zags don’t receive any cash from CFP distributions but earn a full share of the NCAA Tournament cash and the media rights contract for regular-season broadcasts. They would be worth it.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich reports “The NLRB has ruled in the Dartmouth men's basketball team's favor in an unfair labor practice case they filed, saying the school refuses to bargain with them. Safe to assume the school will appeal. This is all part of their plan to get the unionization effort tied up. [...] What's next: The school is supposed to bargain now w the athletes. But as I said, Dartmouth will prob appeal and continue to refuse to bargain. “ (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione gets the profile treatment from SBJ’s Ben Portnoy who followed the Sooners AD during their first SEC home game against Tennessee. The day began a touch after 7AM with his Crimson blazer, Cool Grey Air Jordan 11s, Panama hat and his crimson 1984 Chevy El Dorado. Castiglione began his day handing out donuts to students at the College GameDay set before being catching up with country music star/GameDay guest picker Blake Shelton to give him an OU Cowboy hat, custom Jordans and more; sitting through an operations meeting; and walking through the Varsity O tailgate to meet with a number of Sooner alums and grab a burger dog. On maintaining the traditions amidst a move to the SEC, Castiglione: “We’ve had traditions since long before I got here. I’ve just tried to [steward] good leadership. […] These are the game days you live for. This is awesome.” (link)

New on Connect: USF Senior Assoc. AD/Senior Director of Development Jeff Bromley joins Connect/CSA's Steph Garcia Cichosz to dive into longevity as a fundraiser and the skills and strategies it takes to be effective at raising money in today's athletics landscape. Bromley shares insight into his journey as a former student-athlete turned coach turned administrator, including key lessons from his early role as the Assistant to the AD at Eckerd College (DII), and discusses his best advice for fundraisers: listen well, be present, be a good communicator, and learn your donor and how they prefer to communicate. Bromley explains further the importance of listening: “It’s really hard to do because you want to talk, you want to answer their questions for them. The donor may start talking, saying something that's not true, you want to answer, but really if you just be quiet and you listen, they lead you to so many answers that you were looking for. … If you're actually listening and not just pretending to listen, you'll learn so much about the person.” Full conversation on Connect. Following the controversial offside penalty at the end of Saturday's game between Minnesota and Michigan, the Big Ten is modifying how it officiates onside kicks. The Gophers trailed the Wolverines 27-24 after a furious rally with 1:37 left in the game, and Minnesota’s Matt Kingsbury appeared to successfully recover an onside kick. But officials ruled that Kingsbury was offside, forcing a rekick that was recovered by Michigan, which ran out the clock to win the game. Moving forward, officiating crews from the league will now position the line judge and head line judge on the restraining line of the kicking team, "thereby putting multiple officials in the best position to consistently make the correct judgement," the Big Ten said in a statement. The change to the officiating mechanic was approved by the NCAA. Minnesota Football HC P.J. Fleck: “We submitted the play to the Big Ten Coordinator of Officials for review. The Coordinator informed us the play was too tight to flag. We credit the Big Ten Conference for recognizing the need to make this change to ensure accurate calls in the future.” (link)

Tennessee State is implementing major changes as it faces an “urgent financial situation that threatens the institution's stability.” Interim President Ronald A. Johnson told regents: “In 2019, an external review commissioned by the university highlighted crucial issues including misalignment of staff and faculty, and the need for operational and organizational improvements.” TSU is working with consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal, whose managing director, Jim Grady explained to regents: “What happens in 2022...that $72M number you see in net tuition—there’s about $37M of HEERF (Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund) in that. So, when the HEERF money was no longer available in 2023, we had to apply a higher level of discount in 2023 and 2024.” Johnson added that spending has exceeded income for some time, particularly over the last two fiscal years. As such, “we’re implementing a hiring freeze across the university, a spending freeze on non-essential expenditures, and strategic realignments. This includes workforce adjustments and cost-saving measures to enhance efficiency and adhere to our budget.” (link)

ESPN’s Heather Dinich has more on the previously reported meeting between the SEC & Big Ten next week in Nashville. Per an unnamed B1G source: “There is hope that we can definitely move the needle and make some progress on different things.” Another source: “If we're all going to figure this out, we've got to be on equal footing.” A third source, this one from the SEC: “I'm for anything that gives us the maximum number of postseason opportunities. I don't count bowl games as postseason opportunities. I think anything we can do to take the subjectivity of a committee off the table is really helpful. We may not be able to completely get rid of subjectivity the more we can minimize it. And so Tony Petitti's idea of multiple automatic spots for a conference has a lot of value. I'm not sure four is the right number.” (link)

California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that hit his desk today that would have required “collectives to submit details for NIL deals worth $5,000 or more to the school the athlete attends.” Newsom: “College sports are in a period of transition, as many schools are changing athletic conferences and relevant issues are currently pending in the courts. As Governor, I want to ensure California’s colleges continue to be competitive with other states. Further changes to this dynamic should be done nationally.” More from On3’s Pete Nakos & the San Francisco Chronicle’s Ron Kroichick. (link, link)

Tulane AD David Harris talks to the Times-Picayune’s Guerry Smith about the decision to rebuff overtures from the Pac-12, emphasizing that, while he took part in “regular conversations,” such decisions are “made at the presidential level.” Nonetheless, Harris lauds communication between AAC ADs that prevented the typical “every school for itself” mentality. AAC exit fees, uncertainty about Pac-12 media right revenues, travel and stability questions were all factors, per Harris: “You’ve got to look at what are the future prospects of this league that’s really just resurrecting and whether or not you feel it is going to continue to be stable and grow and prosper over the next several years. You’re dealing with information that often times is speculation. You don’t have any guarantees about exactly what it’s going to be.” Harris does note, however, that the Green Wave isn’t opposed to making a move: “We want the American to be as strong as possible, but certainly if there’s a Power Four option that would come our way, we will have prepared ourselves that we can be a strong and competitive member.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy gets perspectives on realignment from the Pacific Northwest and the machinations over the last six months. As the picture for the Pac-12 became clearer over the last few weeks, with the addition of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State, Washington State Senior Assoc. AD/Asst. VP for Advancement Adam Ganders says: “There’s a lot of scenario planning that you’re going through. But to finally take one of those scenarios and move forward with it, that certainly has been well-received by our donors.” Washington AD Pat Chun, whose move from Pullman to Seattle came together in five days from first contact by President Ana Mari Cauce to MOU, on the move to the Big Ten: “What I’ve reminded our donors is the decision to go to the Big Ten ultimately affirmed our future in college athletics. Being at a half-share, our present is what we’ve got to focus on right now, because whenever the calendar turns and we’re in 2031 and our TV deal resets, Washington, going forward, will be in rarefied air.” Cougars AD Anne McCoy on the future of the rivalry: “I think it’s exactly because of why people don’t want to play [the Apple Cup] is why we need to play, to be honest. It’s such a tradition that all of the other pieces of college athletics shouldn’t take that away.” (link)

Coastal Carolina Chairman Emeritus of Athletics Joe Moglia pens again for Sports Business Journal. Of note: “I wouldn’t want to be part of an institution where only super elite athletes get to compete, and the rest never experience the lessons, joy, health benefits and character development the college playing field uniquely provides. Yet that is increasingly where the NCAA is going. If the major revenue sports are not spun off from the NCAA, college athletics will be crushed in the United States. [...] We must acknowledge that D-I football and basketball are businesses and not amateur pursuits, as the NCAA likes to pretend. Only under those conditions can we deal honestly with the purpose of athletics for most students at most schools. [...] The NCAA can still go back to protecting amateur student athletes, but only if it rids itself of professional sports. Administrators will need to step up and lead the spin-off of those sports (a topic I recently wrote about). And they’ll need to push NCAA President Charlie Baker to refocus on the core mission of the organization, rather than wasting his time trying to get monopoly approval from Capitol Hill.” (link)

Numerous schools across the Carolinas have been forced to alter schedules and relocate students in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. UNC Asheville has canceled classes until October 9, while Appalachian State and Western Carolina will remain closed through this week. UNC Asheville Chancellor Kimberly van Noort: “Conditions at UNC Asheville are difficult. Significant tree damage has occurred and parts of campus are inaccessible. Everyone is safe. Cell and internet coverage is nonexistent at this point.” In South Carolina, Clemson has opened up its facilities to charge devices or utilize public Wi-Fi, while Furman has been forced to cancel classes through at least Wednesday because of ongoing power outages. From a statement by Furman officials: “The lack of power and full access to the internet greatly impacts students’ living conditions, classrooms, dining and activities. Moreover, the vast majority of Furman’s faculty and staff do not have power at home, and many are dealing with storm damage.” Meanwhile, students in Florida and Georgia are returning to normal operations as of Monday following numerous cancellations and, in some cases, campus evacuations. + Major League Baseball officially pulls the plug on Nike’s controversial new uniforms after just one season, announcing that it will begin replacing them with their predecessors starting in 2025. With both old and new versions manufactured by Fanatics, “all road grey uniforms will revert to the materials and design used from 2018 through 2023. All other uniforms will follow suit in 2026. Previous planned changes to home whites and alternate jerseys for 2025 will remain in place next season, with the full reversion happening in 2026.” Nike representatives didn’t immediately respond with comment when asked if the company had plans for another attempt to revamp the jerseys under its current MLB deal. Athlete criticism over the uniforms regarding fit, customization options and their see-through nature, and from fans about logo size, lettering and quality started immediately when introduced back during spring training. + Wisconsin highlights its recently installed Daktronics auxiliary end zone display and ribbon displays at Camp Randall Stadium totaling 12,000 sq. ft. and 10 million pixels as well as a custom audio system. Overall, five different-sized displays join to form the fifth largest scoreboard in college football at 48 feet high by 148.5 feet wide. “Featuring variable content zoning, this can show one large image across all displays or it can show multiple zones of content including live video, instant replays, up-to-the-minute statistics, graphics, animations and sponsorship messages.” An auxiliary end zone video display on Kellner Hall measures 18 feet high by 56.5 feet wide, while two ribbon displays of 3.5 feet high by 396 feet long are mounted to the seating fascia to highlight sponsors and deliver graphics and animations. DirectTV will acquire Dish Network from EchoStar for $1 and assume nearly half of Dish’s $20 billion debt. Further from Axios: “TPG will buy AT&T's 70% stake in DirecTV for $7.6 billion. That is not contingent on the Dish deal closing.” What does it all mean? “The deal immediately reshapes the pay-TV pecking order amid threats from cord-cutting and the rise of streaming. The combined entity, which also includes Dish's Sling TV streaming cable bundle, would have an estimated 20 million subscribers. Both have lost nearly half of their subscriber base since 2013, which is considered the high point of the pay-TV era. DirecTV had more than 20 million subscribers by itself that year.” (link)
