The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty writes on Hawaii’s unique marketplace positioning as UH booster Mike Kawazoe, backed by an IC360 presentation & with the permission of Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos, had been representing the university in conversations with content streamers & other potential partners as the gambling handle on UH contests continues to be a unique value prop. Angelos: “Could we go independent and schedule 13 home games at 6 p.m. local, getting so much money from a TV partner that we can pay big money to schools to come out, even in the middle of their conference schedules? See, that’s a pipe dream. It probably could never work quite like that. But maybe it’s something of that sort, maybe it’s nine home games, maybe it’s remaining in the Mountain West … and having our own television carve-out still. That’s how we have to be thinking.” Kawazoe: “The people at networks I’ve talked to, they’re like, ‘I see it, but when I take it to the higher-ups and have the conversation, it’s: ‘What do we price it at?’ That’s the big question: What is this worth?” Dougherty: “One catch, though, is that intrigued networks would be significantly more intrigued if Hawaii had broken off from the Mountain West and went independent in football. That’s no longer an option — at least for the foreseeable future — after Hawaii signed on Thursday to remain a football-only member until 2032. With conference realignment in full swing again, the Mountain West offered financial incentives for a renewed commitment from its remaining schools. Hawaii chose that over leaping into the abyss.” Lots here…interesting read. (link)

More from UNLV AD Erick Harper, who was asked if some of the $10M-$14M lump sum payment from the Mountain West could be used to retain Football HC Barry Odom: “If retaining our coach isn’t a priority, then I need to be fired.” Also from the Las Vegas Sun’s Mike Grimala: “While the Pac-12 has been pitching members on a projected media deal that would pay each school up to $12 million per year, UNLV president Keith Whitfield and AD Erick Harper said the Mountain West didn’t share any such projection.” (link)

New Santa Clara AD Heather Owen talks about her vision for the Broncos athletic department, which includes tapping into the resources of Silicon Valley. “From San Francisco down to San Jose, we can offer something that other markets can’t. We have got to figure out how to capitalize on that.” Doing so, Owen hopes, will allow the Broncos to best position themselves as conferences continue to realign. “You want to be at the top so when that merry go round starts up again, you can actually get on it and talk about it.” Owen says of her decision to take the job that it would’ve been easy to remain at Stanford, but recalls former Cardinal Women’s Basketball HC Tara VanDerveer telling her: “I just got off the phone with [Santa Clara] President Julie Sullivan, and you should crawl down the 101 to take that job offer. If you get this offer, you have got to go.” Owen took the advice of her former coach and says she wants to “provide great opportunities for both men and women to compete at the highest level. If we were out of balance, if you will, and not providing those opportunities to both men and women, this wouldn’t have been a place for me.” (link)

“I’ve never heard too many fans talk about their love of this. As fans, we sit back and say, ‘We’d like to get to know the players. We’d like to see them grow and develop.’ Now you just don’t have that same luxury. It’s just different. We’ll all get used to it in time, but it’s going to take that. It’s going to take time.” That’s Rhode Island AD Thorr Bjorn on managing in the current landscape of college athletics. Bjorn also talks potential March Madness expansion: “Do you really want the 14th team from a Power Four league to be in that tournament? Are we really hoping for the third or fourth team in the Atlantic 10 or the American or somewhere else? Just because we get an expansion doesn’t mean we get what we want in terms of access.” Providence AD Steve Napolillo on seemingly constant conversations around fellow Big East member UConn: “At the end of the day, it’s always been about football for them. Will it move the needle? Time will tell. I’m glad I don’t have football at Providence, to be honest with you. We’ve got to focus on what we do.” (link)

"Is there an opportunity for me to give back to an industry that has given me so much as a student-athlete?" That's Northwestern Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects Deneé Barracato, who sits down with CSA/Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz for an in-depth conversation about being a Latina in sports, balancing motherhood with career ambitions, and using moments of adversity as positive momentum. Barracato reflects on her time as AD at York College (DIII) as well as her time working around the pinnacle of sports while working in marketing at Madison Square Garden and how both experiences have informed the way she serves as a leader for the Wildcats today. Barracato on what was the most surprising thing about serving as an AD: “I think the most surprising thing is that you think that you know until you know. Everyone thinks that they know what it is to sit in the chair until they've actually done it, and the surprising thing is just all the information, all the individuals that come to you and how overwhelming it can be at times, especially when you're going through things that no one else knows that you're going through. … I admire a lot of the athletic directors and vice presidents that are sitting in the chair at this this level because it is one that's taxing because you always have to keep the student-athletes in mind while also keeping the institution in mind right and the reputation of that institution and knowing that you're an ambassador for that and everyone is always watching.” More on Connect. The California Legends Collective has launched a “Million Dollar GameDay Match” campaign, spurred by ESPN’s College GameDay’s first appearance on Cal’s campus in the show’s history. The first $1M donated will be matched dollar-for-dollar and the largest donor to the campaign will receive a special edition gold helmet used in the Auburn game earlier this season, signed by the entire team. As of publication this morning, the campaign has raised $94,782. (link)

Arkansas Razorback Foundation Executive Director/NAADD President Ryan White sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to outline NAADD initiatives and conversations around NIL, development, collectives and more. The two also discuss new Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari’s impact on season ticket requests and how the Razorbacks can leverage that to drive funding for renovations to Bud Walton Arena. White says Calipari’s hiring was a big lift for the fan base, and the “marketing team went right to work and said, ‘Hey, if you don't have season tickets, are you interested?’ We had over 800 requests from people that didn't have season tickets that now want season tickets. … I was down in Dallas the other day [with a] really wealthy donor down there for us [who’s] not super engaged because it's about five hours and his wife said, ‘Hey, with the hiring of Cal we’ll be up for every basketball game.’ So, that’s the Cal effect.” (link)

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Saturday he signed into law Assembly Bill 1575, which requires public colleges and universities to allow students to have an adviser when facing an alleged violation of a student code of conduct. The law was spurred by the death of former Stanford women’s soccer student-athlete Katie Meyer, who took her life in February 2022. Meyer’s family, which filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Stanford nine months after Katie's death, said the university provided inadequate support when she faced a disciplinary matter at the time of her death. According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data, the number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022. The WSJ’s Douglas Belkin and Andrea Fuller: “Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot. … Though far more students apply to Ivy League schools than in 2002, some of the hottest Southern public schools—including Clemson and Georgia Institute of Technology—have seen even a bigger spike in interest. At Alabama, applications were up more than 600% in the same period—about three times as much as bids to attend Harvard.” Lots more. (link)

Meet “Fireball,” the Miami Heat’s new scoreboard inside the Kaseya Center. Fireball is a “dynamic three-dimensional replica of the team’s iconic ball and flame logo,” according to a Heat press release, which adds: “The flame ball features 2,525 square feet of LED screens, which are capable of variable content zoning allowing them to show one large image or multiple zones of engaging content. The flame ball is framed by four large video displays measuring 19.5 feet by 29.5 feet, two top ring displays and four underbelly displays totaling 7,440 square feet and 55 million pixels of digital display space.” The four underbelly displays on the new scoreboard are the same size as the old video boards at 9 feet by 15.5 feet. Each of the new scoreboard’s large video displays are about twice as large as the old displays at 19.5 feet by 29.5 feet. Check it out. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news yesterday afternoon that Texas State has a verbal offer to join the Mountain West. Further: “A decision is expected in the upcoming days, as the talks continue. The Pac-12 has also expressed interest, but that has yet to yield an offer.” (link); Related, the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen reports Sun Belt officials are planning for Texas State to exit the league and “believe based on preliminary conversations with colleagues that if a spot in their league opens up the SBC would have multiple Conference USA schools and perhaps some from the MAC angling to join. Interest from MAC members, however, may depend on other moves out west.” Schools specifically mentioned: Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee & Liberty. (link)

Rutgers Interim AD Ryan Pisarri saw his base pay increase from $210K to $505K once he stepped in to lead the Scarlet Knights. Pisarri is also “eligible for salary increases based on any compensation program in effect for non-aligned senior administrators at Rutgers during the time” he serves as interim. (link)

“Build a strategy that’s unique to Iowa that can kind of keep us on point. That to me is fun, particularly at a place like Iowa where you do have resources that make it possible for you to make adjustments and be prepared for whatever the model shapes up to be.” That’s Iowa Deputy AD for Strategic Initiatives/COO Joe Parker who has been tasked with navigating the department through the changing landscape. Parker said of the potential revenue sharing arrangements, “Everyone’s going to work with the intent that they’re going to get there. Now, the question will be can everyone do that? It’s been a lot of contemplating what legacy spending that sort of has gotten layered in over a number of years. Is it still creating the return that we’re looking for? … Is it absolutely necessary?” The Gazette’s John Steppe profiles the former Colorado State AD, who took a few months off before returning to college athletics. Hawkeyes AD Beth Goetz: “He’s already making an impact in so many ways internally, building relationships with donors and he’s going to be a big part of what we’re doing going forward.” More on Parker’s career. UNC Wilmington AD Michael Oblinger joins D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle to recap the first 18 months of his tenure in Wilmington. Oblinger talks about learning from those who were already on campus, building culture, hiring teammates to fit within that vision and more. Oblinger acknowledges that when he arrived at Connecticut from LSU, he probably tried to take on too much too soon, “and I thought that probably put us back as a staff, probably put us back as a department. So I was really intentional with taking on little things, and I talk about kind of a low-hanging fruit, low-hanging priorities as it relates to just even on the revenue generation side…so some of the things we talked a lot about is how do we communicate, the fan experience, we spent an awful lot of time on. And those are relatively easy things that you can tweak and show your fans that, ‘Hey, we value what you do, we need your revenue, we need your resources, we need you to come out to the ballgame and spend your discretionary income with us. So those were really the first things that I tackled.” More on Connect. (link)

Fresno State has signed a multiyear deal with Collegiate Sports Connect to leverage its TalentFinder database for administrative & support staff identification & hiring. Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “At Fresno State, we are committed to fostering an environment of excellence in all aspects of our athletics department. Partnering with Collegiate Sports Connect allows us to strategically identify and recruit top-tier talent that aligns with our vision of success, both on and off the field. This tool will be invaluable in ensuring we build a diverse, dynamic, and competitive team that supports our student-athletes in achieving their full potential.” (link)

An emotional East Tennessee State Football HC Tre Lamb following his team’s win over The Citadel yesterday after a harrowing travel experience from Johnson City to Charleston: “These last 36 hours have been hard. Hard on the families not knowing where their sons were for a few hours. These guys handled it well. You don’t plan on stuff like that as a head coach and sometimes you feel like it’s your fault, you’re responsible for 100 kids. I’m just proud of the way they played. … Glad they could get a win.” The Bucs will wait until this afternoon to try to venture home and take a different route. (link)

Yesterday’s Gardner-Webb vs. Tennessee Tech football game was also impacted by Hurricane Helene as power outages at GWU’s Spangler Stadium led to free admission for fans. The Bulldogs instead asked those attending to bring canned goods and/or donate to all those impacted by the storm. (link)

UNLV Football HC Barry Odom reflected on the past week after a lopsided win over Fresno State yesterday: “Many have expressed very strong opinions about the events of last week without full knowledge of the facts, without full knowledge of the events of last week and without full knowledge of the rules in the ever-changing, evolving NIL system. And regrettably, some have even used this circumstance as a platform for their own agendas. I respect everyone's right to an opinion, and I won't comment on others' opinions or their motivations for expressing them. Rather, I'll say only that our football program complied with applicable rules and, subject to those rules, we're fully committed to the development and the success of every student-athlete in our program.” (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes on the situation involving New Mexico State OC Tyler Wright: “Let’s make this clear: Tyler Wright can say whatever he wants, the baseline beauty of our perfectly imperfect country. Tyler Wright can also be fired for saying whatever he wants.” Wright, who reportedly has 150+ posts on his X account from more than a decade ago that contain derogatory language about African-Americans, Africans, Hispanics and others, was not with the Aggies for yesterday’s game against New Mexico and he won’t be with the team while the university investigates the posts, according to NMSU officials. New Seattle U. Deputy AD Andy Fee sits down with the university’s student newspaper to look both back & forward: “To be at a values-based institution, a Jesuit university like Seattle University really does fit who I am. And you know, the last couple of weeks have already felt like home in terms of the feel just walking across the campus. There’s always advantages and disadvantages to wherever you are. I don’t really feel concerned about the disadvantages, you know, of having 8,000 or less students. To me, that’s an advantage as I look at it in terms of who we recruit and what we are espousing to be. [...] Being in an urban center is quite challenging. But that’s something we’ve got to look at. One, how do we get people motivated to get up and literally get to the venue? And then two, when they’re at the venue, how do we make sure that they feel that’s something they want to come back to? Once students are back fully here, I’m already trying to set up conversations with students. I want to make sure that we do really listen to what the students see in terms of what is it like to come to an athletic event and what would be more motivating for them to come back?” (link)

Jamar Thompson, currently Minnesota’s Senior Assoc. AD for Development, sat down with D1.ticker/Connect's Kristen Eargle from the 2024 NACDA Convention while still serving as Northern Iowa's Assoc. AD of External Affairs. Thompson serves as an Executive Committee Member for NAADD and chats about fundraising in this landscape, UNI's UNI Dome project and adapting and building relationships during leadership changes over the past year. Thompson, who was also a football student-athlete at UNI, on how that informs his current role: “I can tell the story because I can say I was in the shoes. I can say I came to UNI, I was the first college graduate in my family. I got two degrees – my undergraduate and my masters degree – and I’m a product of [donors’] support. … I can make that case and donors understand that. I’m a product of their support. For me, it’s how do I get those and help create other opportunities for student-athletes, current and in the future, to have that same opportunity I had.” (link)

Miami (FL) football makes the trip west to Cal next weekend and ESPN College GameDay will be in Berkeley for the first time. Show host Rece Davis notes “Now we’re down to five Power Conference teams that have not hosted GameDay before.” (link)

The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode observes that booing among college football fans appears to be occurring more frequently, “which goes right along with college football players getting paid in the open and college athletic departments early in the stages of asking for even more money so they can share court-mandated revenue with the players on top of” NIL. Rexrode continues: “First of all, boo until your voice is gone. … In a sport that has been the NFL’s minor leagues for a long time but now can’t argue otherwise, fans should not be expected to act like anything but professional sports fans.” Of Florida State in particular, Rexrode notes: “I would argue those loud noises should be aimed more at the $9.9M-a-year coach who put this team together, Mike Norvell, but I’m sure that’s the intent of many. Hopefully most. And if exercising their right to express disappointment in the most guttural way possible is all they’re doing, these fans are not a problem.” All that said, Rexrode wonders: “If it’s more acceptable for fans to boo in the NIL era, should sports media treat college players as pro players?” ESPN analyst Booger McFarland tells him: “College kids, although they are the ones playing, I put the ownership on the coaches since it’s their job, so to speak. NIL hasn’t really changed my analysis of the players or the game. It will change my analysis of the coaches. They are hand-picking these teams and deciding who gets the money.” (link)
